The cave loomed overhead. The mouth looked like a beast opening its giant maw. The beast’s teeth were a set of stalactites and stalagmites scattered throughout the main entrance. Its tongue was the rocky floor underneath. Rydia placed her hand on the entrance. She frowned at the feeling of darkness beyond physical deeper in. Perhaps it was good she heard about this place. The gathering darkness in this world would need the light of the heroes who fought for its fate.
Mount Hotan was dangerous. She had heard stories of the creatures that made this place their home. Rydia felt drawn to this cave in particular. In her experience caves could hold a number of dangers from the physical terrain to the monsters themselves. It could hold artifacts and treasures that could be of beneficial use as well. What called her here was the fear of the surrounding villagers. If she could banish the largest creatures, she could ease the feelings in the meantime. She didn’t want the monsters to attack the towns like the Bombs had attacked the village of Mist. It was her wish for that not to happen on her watch.
She wished she’d thought to ask for assistance from one of the wandering warriors. Her magic was powerful, but it could do little against monsters with high spell resistance or who could approach her face-to-face. Rydia imagined her found family’s frowns of disapprovals as she prepared to wander into the depths alone. She wasn’t truly alone. The Mist Dragon lent her its strength. It had its limitations, but it had proven to be a worthy ally time and time again.
She sighed staring deep into the cave, breathing deeply of the air. Perhaps luck would have it that someone would be in the area. Rydia lingered a moment preparing herself to adventure in.

Apparently a nasty beast had attacked a settlement nearby Mount Hotan, and while Caius was not given any information on what this "large beast" was, he was pretty much told that if he found a large beast in Mount Hotan, it was likely the one that attacked the village and he would be paid in kind for bringing back proof of slaying it. Of course, the first thing that he saw after taking the job as he walked past were townsfolk staring at him when he began to leave without an escort or a mercenary trope. He could hear rumblings about the "dead man walking" and criticisms at him for going alone. Not that Caius was that bothered by them. This was his job, alone or not.
During his last year in this world, Caius had grown to hear rumors here and there of places such as Mount Hotan. Apparently it was a hotbed of dangerous creatures. Odds are, he'd probably find more than one, but if he took out just one, he would satisfy the criteria. Still, he went in planning to take on not just one... He was going in for a fight. He was sure dangerous creatures would always spawn from here, but if they were left unchecked, then they would grow too much in numbers to stop when more of them began making moves out of the cave and ravaging settlements for whatever reason. He may not be paid extra for taking on the extra beasties, since they were not part of the criteria... But that was fine. This was his decision. Any resources he expended going the extra mile would have to come out of pocket, for this was a decision made through his own interests and not in what they had asked for. Even if he knew that if he just killed the one big monster... Another would likely still attack.
Not that they'd understand most likely if he tried to explain that to them. Oh well. It was his decision to not take the easy way out regardless. Caius would stop in front of the mouth of the cave, brown eyes scanning the area for any sign of monsters. Instead, he caught sight of a young woman, also preparing to trek into the mountains alone. Walking further toward the cave, he found himself standing side by side with her, with his arms relaxed behind his head.
"Do you live around here? I was told the monsters here were dangerous, but I may have misheard when they actually said "dangerously beautiful" instead" He joked lightly, his tone casual and relaxed. He tipped his head toward her a bit and the smirk he gave indicated he was merely teasing, and his expression hinted at no malice nor desire, simply a bit of harmless, cheeky, casual witty mischief.
He looked back at the cave again and stretched out in that moment, cracking his neck as he made idle preparation to make the trek. He continued to speak without looking to her, as his eyes took a more focused, business-like visage. "In all seriousness, it looks like we probably have the same mind, if you're intending to go in there. Did one of the villages send you?"
The nearby settlements were ill-prepared for the monster attack. It had visibly shaken her when she had seen the damage. It hadn’t looked as catastrophic as the Bombs that attacked her village, but the memory had still risen to the surface whether she wanted it or not. She had to compose herself before she moved on. She had used a portion of her magic power on the seriously injured. The people had thanked her for the trouble giving her provisions for her trip into the cave and letting her rest before moving on.
She visibly jumped at the voice. While the presence was welcome, he had surprised her by arriving when she had wished for someone in the area. “No. I was wandering through.” She frowned at his comment about monsters being directed at her. Time around Edge had made her somewhat familiar with his joking manner. Comments like these still had the potential to catch her off guard especially from a stranger. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too Sir… You can call me Rydia.”
“If your intention is to stop that monster from attacking the village again, then that is my mission as well. The villagers…. I couldn’t bear to see the villagers in pain.” Her eyes steeled in preparation for the mission ahead. She appreciated his change in attitude to a more business like approach.
“May I ask where you prefer to position yourself in battle? I would appreciate if you were capable of leading the charge. I can provide covering fire with my spells. I promise to be careful where I aim.” She knew other adventurers were cautious of ‘friendly fire’. Rydia was experienced enough with her spells to know the range and area of effect for the blasts.

Caius would nod his head in turn as he would listen to her talk about how she was wandering through, and then her indication that she was here to slay the monsters as well. It looked like she was hoping for a bit of company... Of the monster slaying kind, I mean. Which he didn't mind. He had a feeling, a pit in his gut, that he was going to need all the help that he could get. He was used to working alone, but his time in the Kingsglaive had allowed him to be more welcoming to the idea of help. Teamwork could make the dream work, as they always say...
"Caius" He answered first up. "Just call me Caius. It's a pleasure to meet you, Rydia."
He began to walk toward the cave's maw then, an excited glint in his eye at the idea of what trials could lie ahead, what challenges could be right in front of him, what sort of battles could await... "Well, I guess that makes us friends" He joked lightly toward the remarks about them having the same mission. "If you're a magic user, then I can lead the charge just fine, yes" Caius spoke as he would hold out a hand and his gunblade, Lonoaw, would appear in his hand. He knew he would likely be needing it as soon as they stepped into the caves. But it was also to indicate early on that he was a sword user, and could cover her just fine in regards to melee combat. "Covering fire will do just fine."
"Let's get going then" Caius would remark toward her, giving her one last glance before disappearing into the maws of the caverns. It was going to be a long road, he could tell... But he did not fear it. He walked the path with bright eyes.
She felt more confident about this endeavor already. The feeling of wavering belief in her abilities when on her own was replaced by a belief in her teamwork skills. Her back straightened. Her hand flipped back a few strands that cascaded in front of her face. A determined glint appeared in her eyes.
"I appreciate the help, Caius. Shall we?" She gestured forward with a flourish. "Friends." The mage kept a ready grip on the whip at her side. Her skills should balance the other's she hoped. Rydia's magic was fairly balanced on its own. Thankfully - because of this world - she regained her skill over white magic. It wasn't near as powerful as Rosa's, but it would suit their quest.
An impressed look crossed her face at the appearance of the weapon, but she held back her question. Her first thought led her to think that it was an enchanted weapon with the power to disappear and reappear at will. It seemed like more than a simple sword. It gave off an air of higher mystery.
She followed carefully behind him. Shadows of bats stirred by the ceiling at the noise of their footsteps. "Fire," she murmured at the torch she retrieved from her belt holster. It burned bright and steady. "Don't want us stumbling unawares." The light is held carefully between them. A frown furrows her brow despite the comfort it could provide them.
She stiffened at a noise further ahead. "Did they say what all could live here?" she asked quietly. The young woman expected the usual cave dwellers: bats, insects, all manners of goos and ghouls.
"Here." Her hand touched his shoulder as she cast 'Protect' on her companion. Couldn't be too careful here. A skittering ahead proved her point. Something approached. She tensed up and readied an offensive spell. The whip would be more useful if something approached them.

Having company on an adventure was a welcome thing indeed, and judging by the fire spell she soon after cast, it seemed she was fairly handy with magic. It was good to have a good range of capabilities between a group, he knew. He was used to the Glaives having similar skillsets, even if he knew that wasn't always wise, their strengths generally came from different weapons. He and Rydia would likely be completely different, with different skillsets, different strengths and weaknesses, and obviously different weapons. He just hoped that they would compliment one another well enough.
"I was told that a variety of creatures lived here, though the villagers don't appear to consider them a threat in comparison to the big, bad dragon that is terrorizing them" Caius would point out as he would look around, noting the presence of the bats. But they couldn't be what was making that skittering noise... As whatever would approach was clearly on the ground or on the walls. "If we're lucky, we'll start with something smaller, for a bit of a warm-up. But who knows what-"
Unfortunately, he wasn't going to have his day, today. The skittering would come from a large spider-like monster, which would crash down from the ceiling, scaring the bats away. And as if to further taunt him, a bunch of smaller ones would crash down alongside it. "Spiders. Why does it always have to be spiders?" Caius would ask, shaking his head as the gunblade Lonoaw would re-materialize in his hand again. His other hand would ignite as a fireball would materialize in his palm. He dabbled in magic, though he likely didn't have the skill in it that Rydia did.
He was definitely grateful for the Protect spell, as he would quickly turn and shoot the fireball toward one of the smaller ones, taking it by surprise and incinerating it.
"It might be best we do away with our numbers disadvantage first up."
Teamwork took another meaning when she was on her own. She was missing how naturally her and her friends blended together over time. The summoner had stood out in their number - a young village girl with little to her name and the ability to summon fantastical Eidolans. If her village had not been attacked, a threat to the world like Golbez would not have concerned her.
If she was honest with herself, she’d been hoping to grow more as a person ever since she arrived here. Rydia found she lacked confidence in her abilities when around people she did not know. Her magic spoke for her experience. It could likely stand up to a number of the spell casters here.
It was hard to trust in others when she was by herself. She shouldn’t take anyone at face value, yet she found herself partnering with someone from outside the cave. What if he set up a trap deep within the cave where no one could see them? What was there besides monsters in these parts? It left her feeling uncertain and on-guard when she knew nothing that was truly going on here.
It was reminiscent of the on-the-spot recruitment of her friends. In this case they didn’t have Golbez’s army after them. There wasn’t a pressure to succeed in a mission other than the reassurance towards the townspeople that the monster was slain. This was a personal mission out of the goodness of her heart.
She listened, nodding along with his words. It was her thoughts exactly. Dragons while solitary creature often had other lesser creatures sharing their caves with them. It could be a warning system to the dragon itself. “Fira!” The spell is shot forward with a sharp word of command. She sent it to spread and linger low burning the large spider and crisping the smaller spiders. The attack power of the spell was lessened by spreading the effect out, but she wanted to help them from being outnumbered.
The larger spider got more and more agitated as the little ones were harmed. They must have disturbed a nest. Better to take care of this one quick before it became more than they could handle.

Caius had spent much of his life fighting on his own. He had been a solo hunter, fighting even the biggest of beasties singlehandedly without any fear. He tended to come back hobbling and barely clutching to life, but he came back victorious. But it was when he joined the Glaives that he learned to work with others. He had learned to be able to coordinate well with them... But while it was not her fault, Rydia was not one of his brothers and sisters in arms. She was a stranger to him. But perhaps through this, they might just be able to make this work. Who knows, right?
He would prepare his blade as the spiders would continue to come. It seemed that the larger one had been incited by the fireball hitting a smaller one, and Caius knew that the two of them would need eyes in the backs of their heads. "Don't get too far away from me" Caius would command, not wanting to allow Rydia to be overwhelmed as she favored magic. Her spell would spread out, incinerating several of the small spiders, and hitting the larger one. Their numbers disadvantage was dwindling quickly, which was a good thing. But they weren't out of the woods just yet.
Caius would toss his blade forward toward the large spider, using the Warp Strike to send himself forward, catching the blade and slashing the spider in the front. He would use the momentum of his flight to bring his feet forward and kick off the spider before it could retaliate, sending him flying back as he would then aim his hand down and begin firing several smaller fireballs at the smaller spiders. They would not deal as much damage, but with the smaller ones, perhaps it wouldn't need to. And he could fire more as a result.
Caius would land on his feet and charge forward, deciding to engage the smaller spiders head on...
She peered backward knowing monsters liked to surprise unsuspecting adventurers. These spiders were the front-line of this monster nest. The villagers had mentioned a dragon which brought its own set of problems for them. The cave must open up more further into the reptile’s lair. If only she could use her more powerful summons again. The Eidolans continued to be blockaded by a powerful barrier that left her with a mixture of the capabilities of her younger and present self.
Spiders were irritating creatures. Their webs could slow a person down. The likelihood of poison was high among the types that frequented deserted areas. She’d made it a habit to study animals (both natural and unnatural) and their habits. In a small pouch the mage girl carried a stash of herbal remedies in case her magic was low in a time of need.
“Do you need healing? I can cure you of poison.” When the words left her lips, she pondered on how she was not used to saying those words again with magic as their intent. The young woman had carried a ready supply of the party’s medical potions and herbs when she had traveled with them. Someone need to stand ready to take care of the healers if they fell in battle. She hoped Rosa was proud of her…
Rydia was amazed at his skill that reminded her of Kaine’s jump strike. The young woman ran after Caius as they fought off any spiders that got in their way. She cracked her whip several times at a spider that threatened to break from the group to face her head-on. A set of concentrated icicles is sent the arachnids’ way, impaling them with precision. The spell would cause less friendly fire than running through fire or accidentally shocking her comrade.
Tracing a pattern for extra flair, she faced backwards and released a fireball at the chasing spiders behind them. It was her hope that it would discourage the creepy crawlies. Rydia gave herself an extra burst of speed to keep distance and move farther into the cave. When she got closer to Caius, she applied a quick Cure spell to both of them to heal anything that could be holding them back when they reached the larger monster that lay deeper within.
It gave her a sense of enjoyment to partner with another human being again. To know that she had someone’s back in a matter of life or death…
Caius knew that the two of them would need to try and reserve their strength if they had any hopes of taking down this dragon at the summit. This had been far more than he had been paid for, but then again... They'd said beast. Not dragon. They probably thought it was just some beast, but on the way here... Caius had seen the beast fly overhead and land at the summit. No, this was definitely what they had meant. He had only heard of these things in stories, so to see an actual dragon in the flesh was... Well, it was freaky, to say the least. But Caius had made a life and a career out of taking on things bigger than him, stronger than him, tougher armoured than him and had far bigger teeth than him. Alone. And usually still managing to barely escape by the skin of his teeth with the kill. This had been his life as a hunter though, and this dragon was likely far stronger than the things he had taken on as a hunter. Though his abilities as a Kingsglaive certainly helped... As did Rydia's presence, for that matter. He hoped, anyway.
The spiders continued to shove up and web down from above as the two would run through the hordes. Caius would break into a sprint as he would charge forward, bringing his blade down on a spider that had just set down in front of them and was blocking their passage. Severing it's arm when it tried to attack, he would bring the blade down into it's top half to dispatch it quickly. The more time that they wasted, the more likely the horde would catch up to them...
Caius would be caught by a poison spit that erupted from one of the spiders and he let out a growl in pain as the acidic substance burned him. He didn't feel the effects of poison, so he got lucky, but it certainly smarted... As a result, he shook his head when Rydia asked if he had been poisoned. To his good fortune.
He could hear Rydia firing off a spell toward the spiders chasing them, and soon enough he felt the healing effects of Cure. "Thanks" He would quickly acknowledge as he would look up toward where they were headed...
Dead end.
"Damn" Caius would growl as he knew they were about to come a stop at the wall. There had to be another way, there had to be another way...
Then he saw it. Looking up greeted him with a passage that led upwards. But it wouldn't be easy to climb up to in time...
Then it hit him.
"Rydia, take my hand" Caius would ask as he would hold out a hand to her. "I can get us out of here."
