Nacht
"Leave me be."

FULL NAME:: Nacht of Falgabard, son of Sigurd
NICKNAMES:: None
GENDER:: Nonbinary, with a male lean. Uses he/him pronouns but honestly would not care a whit if you used anything else for him.
AGE:: 20

GAME OF ORIGIN:: Final Fantasy Dimensions (Final Fantasy Legends: Warriors of Light and Darkness [JP])
ALIGNMENT:: Heroic
EQUIPMENT:: His outfit, his bag (with basic survival tools like homemade salves/tinctures and a tanning knife), and a replica of the Graham's Will sword (no soul inside of it).

HEIGHT:: 5'4
HAIR/EYES/SKIN:: TEAL/BLUE/FAIR
DISTINGUISHING MARKS:: He has a series of small scars on his back that, when they were fresh wounds, were deep enough to cause severe and permanent nerve damage. As a result, he has limited feeling in his back. He also keeps tally marks beneath bandages on his arms. Otherwise, his visible distinguishing marks are that he rarely changes from his serious expression, and he always wears a brooch with a wing, the symbol of Falgabard. In terms of non-physical attributes, he is incredibly quiet, both due to a long history of learning to keep to himself and stumbling over the common tongue.
(This linguistics part is probably only interesting to me but I'm keeping it in anyway for my own reference.) Nacht speaks a variant of Lower Silesian as his native dialect, but he speaks Hochdeutsch perfectly well. The version that he speaks is closer to its origin point of the 12th-century Middle High German, with its heaviest influences being pulled from Thuringian and Upper Saxon. Therefore, his accent tends to favor the softening of consonants such as K, P, and T; some schwa sounds (notably Ë) are reduced to other sounds such as A. He utilizes the same endings to infinitives that are found in Standard German, as is present in the Upper Saxon dialect.
Basically, for the layman, this means that from a non-German perspective, he probably just sounds like he's speaking a more sonorous dialect of German. For German speakers, he sounds as if he has a very outdated and kind of "hick" accent owing to Falgabard's long history of their language and culture being isolated. For the sake of worldbuilding, I will be referring to his home dialect/Lower Silesian as Old Falgabardian, and Hochdeutsch/High German as Modern Falgabardian.
Additionally, he uses a bloated form of monastic DGS (German Sign Language) as a home sign, but as no one else uses his particular dialect (nor much of Falgabardian traditional sign at all) it doesn't tend to be terribly useful except to help him cement ideas to himself.
II. PERSONA
If anyone would be pushed to describe Nacht, the first word that comes to mind would be "quiet." He is a person who keeps his thoughts to himself at nearly all cost, unless he's asking a question that he feels desperately needs to be answered. Years of abuse and bad situations have taught him that omission is key, and so he's awfully unwilling to divulge information about himself -- but, much can be learned from his actions, and they reveal a rich inner life and moral code that he follows. His survival skills, demonstrating many years of living life on the low road, show a basic love for the world and his fellow man in their nature.
Nacht is sure to keep demonstrations of his emotions to a minimum in nearly all regards, but the man does display an occasional penchant for melodrama, as well as difficulty restraining his fear and anger when placed in a combat setting. Practice and training spars will quickly grow dangerous with Nacht at the other end, as he doesn't know when to stop and treats all physical conflict as a life or death situation. Additionally, despite belonging to a long history of dark knights with a code of chivalry, his unique situation has put him in a position where his first instinct is to fight dirty; he's not above beating friend or foe to death with a rock in place of showing mercy or offering a swift kill if threatened. These are problems that he's not aware of, as he's not been in a position where people who genuinely care about him have been on the other end of a spar in some time.
Nacht has a history of psychosis, which adds to an already existing urge to find any potential survivors from Falgabard's massacre. This causes him to be nearly single-minded in his overall ambitions, though he is able to recognize the importance of contributing to other causes. When his aid is requested, he will lend himself whole-heartedly, silently trying to fill in the gaps where other people often forget (typically in the department of caring for basics or preparing oneself for difficult travel). Nonetheless, he sometimes will find himself wholly distracted by hallucinations or delusions and put himself into bad situations as a result.
Despite the many challenges he faces, one does not have to dig far to find that Nacht is an incredibly loving person, a trait which is only just barely hidden by his stiff and gruff exterior. He houses a great admiration for people with ambition, and is able to restrain himself and his distaste for people who lack direction. He makes his best efforts to not make a notable mark on the people in his life, often even refusing to give his name unless pressed, but tends to carve his own seat out nonetheless with his sheer attention to detail and his inability to ignore people in need.

III. HISTORY
Life in Falgabard had been challenging, in a fun way. Growing up on top of a tall mountain, overseeing a great range, had taught Nacht much about how to adequately care for himself and the people around him. Likewise, his father Sigurd represented for Nacht the pinnacle of what a dark knight should be -- charitable, steadfast, and quick to anger for the right reasons. As a child, he had been a bit of a chatterbox, interested always in learning about the traditions of Falgabardian history. With training and learning under his belt, he had been waiting anxiously for the day in which he would become a dark knight himself, protector of the mountains and guardian of the nuclear power plant which resided in the nearby Mt. Gulg.
Unfortunately, the Avalonian Empire would have other plans for him. Turns out that the mountain people were not the only ones privy to the amount of power located in Mt. Gulg, and on one of their many conquests, decided to drop bombs and soldiers from the heavens onto the ill-prepared dark knights. It was that day that Nacht learned the true tactical disadvantage of mountains against empires with superior technology -- though dark knights could slay nearly anything on foot, the sheer cliffs and thin mountain paths that he had called home for 12 years were lethal to their inhabitants when given nowhere else to run. He hadn't even seen his father in some time before he was dragged kicking and screaming into one of the airships that had broken down the walls of Castle Falgabard.
For years after, Nacht would ask himself why he alone was spared and brought to Harmonia, a labor camp on an island in the unforgiving north. He would eventually come to the conclusion that he was meant to be an example to the other nations that would fall to Avalonian conquest, and quickly, this conclusion taught him the value of keeping his mouth shut. For six years he would labor at the behest of his conquerors, forced to build and hunt and build and hunt in an environment that rarely came above freezing, even in summer. His mountain hunting skills would be put to use to force prey out of their holes in the furthest northern reaches of the island. His ability to handle the thin mountain air would be tested as he was placed in quarries to determine the safety of it. Tragedy after tragedy would befall Harmonia, and after six long years, his anger settled into a steady simmer, crackling in his heart and waiting for the moment of best release.
Nacht's time would come a few months after the introduction of two new recruits, Alma and Dusk, and nearly as soon as the princess of Burtgang, Sarah, was introduced to their new life. Given leadership over the three newer recruits, Nacht was promised his freedom by Cid, the inventor of Avalonian airships, in exchange for the theft of the crystal of one of the last territories unclaimed by the Empire, located in the conglomerate kingdom of Lux. Nacht agreed, silently planning along with the other three to destroy it and keep it out of Avalonian hands. Upon arriving, they make contact with some villagers from Lux who had snuck into the Crystal Temple -- Sol, Diana, and Glaive, tailed by a local soldier and brother of Diana by the name of Aigis. The crystal, meanwhile, sensing that Nacht and his company intended to destroy it, instead reacted by splitting the world into two dimensions, severing many locations' connection to their physical places, and rending the skies in twain to create the World of Light and the World of Darkness. Followed only by Alba from his original group, Nacht would become the de facto leader of the Warriors of Darkness, in charge of Alba, Diana, and Glaive.
Their journey ran into difficulties at every turn, primarily from interparty struggles. Glaive had suspected Nacht to be an imperial spy, constantly accusing him of uncouth and dangerous behavior, and drama-lover Alba would often fan the flames, leaving only Diana to defend Nacht, as the man wouldn't utter a word in defense of himself. In their efforts to bring the halves of the world back together, the Warriors of Darkness would go to Mt. Falgabard, marking the first time that Nacht had been home since the massacre. There, they would encounter a spirit with unfinished business in the guise of Nacht's father -- it turned out to be Graham, Sigurd's best friend, whose spirit inhabits Sigurd's sword and controls his armor. The party would discover that Sigurd's dying wish to Graham had been to protect Nacht, but by the time that Graham himself had been killed, Nacht had already been abducted by the Empire. Graham would join the party and become Nacht's guardian, and the literal sword at his side.
It would take many months before the Warriors of Light and Darkness would be able to combine the world's dimensions again -- and falsely, at that, creating a world of eternal sunset known as the World of Dusk. Upon finally meeting up again, Nacht would remain distant from both his band of darkness warriors and the Warriors of Light, though he found himself rich in admiration for Sol and his considerably more organized party. After adventuring around the world yet again and eventually going to the World of Nil to set things right, finally, things would turn around, and the world would be free of the clutches of the Avalonian Empire.
The last time that Nacht saw his friends, Sarah had been crowned Queen of Burtgang, and since then he has wandered the world as a quiet, ghostlike man, focused and driving himself near to sickness in his quest for Falgabardian survivors.
