Ah, she must have been from his world. Or at least one of the shards. "... You have to rely on the lifestream to do your gardening for you?" He raised an eyebrow, looking to the flowers. Perhaps he had given them a sweet, merciful death, if such was the case, as he looked back at the woman. This was already off to a rosy start, wasn't it? Really, if you have to rely on the lifestream... He shrugged at her attempt to fire back. "Was that supposed to be my punishment? I can play dirty if I have to." Really, was she willing to get into this? This was a battle she could not win. It was an art that he had practiced over the years with his dear apprentice. Well, mostly on his dear apprentice. Cassandra was never really one for this sort of thing. But the worse her reaction, Alexander knew, than the better the pun was to begin with.
What an attitude. They were just flowers.
As he was yanked out of the flower bed, he followed her lead. No reason to not do so just yet. But yeah, perhaps there was some valid cause for concern, so he rushed to defend himself. "Not chasing me, chasing a friend. I'm just in the wrong place at the wrong time and I wanted to get out now that he's safe." And throw Prompto under the bus. Okay, so Prompto wasn't actually his friend, but still, be nice, best construction, right? Though it did cause him to stop for a moment as a realization hit him regarding it all. He did pick up the pace again, but he continued on. "... I think I just realized why, too. I didn't even know why at first." For real, that had been surreal, but thinking on it, now it made sense.
Taking Shadowbringer and dropping it into his shadow, where Fray was content to take it once more, he placed his hands into his pockets. "A while back there was some asshole that attacked Provo and wrecked my shop while I was gone. Blonde spiky hair and a giant sword. My friend doesn't have the sword but he definitely has the hair." He took them out briefly to motion his hands upward from his head, to indicate towering spikes in the hair before shoving them back into his pockets. "So I have a feeling they think he's that guy. He's way too scrawny to actually use a two hander, though." Yeah, he'd never say it to Prompto's face... well, actually he would, but Prompto was a really tiny dude.
He was already beginning to stir. He wouldn't be down long. He'd taken worse punishment than this throughout his life on a constant basis. In fact, one almost had to wonder how he wasn't crippled or something at this point. He let out a slight huff at getting bodied by a building like that. Normally he's a tad more nimble, well, usually. Poorly timed back flips not withstanding. But someone at least had the courtesy to cast a healing spell and speak to him, even if she was very clearly giving him grief. He turned his head to see who was speaking to him. Right, pink. Lots and lots of pink. His hand closed, gripping around some flowers. Okay, so that was what he had landed on. That explained the softer than expected landing, at least. Well, it was a good thing someone had put them there, at least they probably wouldn't be too bothered, knowing the flowers had been sacrificed for such a noble purpose.
Alex was up surprisingly quickly. Say what you will, the man was used to taking a beating. Right, he didn't want to keep anyone waiting but--well, honestly, he should at least thank the nice lady for actually helping him. Mostly. He brushed himself off, getting now dead plant matter off of him. Well, uh, crud. Ah well, they were just flowers, they could be regrown. "Thanks for that." He remarked, but a bad idea? Ohhhh no no, not right now at least. "And right now," He remarked, wondering if he should dismiss Shadowbringer or not, "It's probably the best idea I could've had. Got to stay at the top of my game." He flashed a thumbs up, yet keeping a deadpan expression on his face.
His eyes trailed upward. Could he just Corps-a-corps back up there? Something to consider, at least. He did tell Prompto to wait until tomorrow, but that also meant he'd also be trying to get out as quickly as possible. "Say, you know the quickest way to the station out of here? That doesn't involve a bunch of xenophobic guards trying to ruin your day?" Sonora really, really didn't like outsiders, especially when they were very obviously outsiders, too. Even then, when you didn't look the part and you looked like you blended in, they tended to give you the side eye.
Right, so, Prompto was taken care of. That was one person safe, one of Noctis's friends found. Now he just needed to find the others, but that could wait until another day. Once again, it was rooftop to rooftop. Though he did stop for a moment, hurling Shadowbringer briefly to see if he could now that he realized Noctis and he were in the same world. Didn't work, but worth a shot. Now he kept the zweihander strapped to his back. It wasn't Silversnake, but at least it would be some measure of defense if things got ugly. He just needed to get to the entrance and retrieve everything he'd left behind. Still, as he kept moving, he really couldn't help but think back on what Prompto had said. It bothered him, more than he was willing to admit. Not the scolding, he 100% deserved that, just... everything else.
”You don’t know Noct. Not my Noct.”
Anyone from his world that he had met didn't recognize him. He'd always chalked that up to amnesia like last time. It was easier to deal with, after all, it'd happened after Carteneau. So everyone forgetting him again didn't hurt as much as it should've. But this was different; if those he met weren't his versions, then what could he do? He'd be truly stranded in this world, with no one to reach out to. He didn't understand it. Noctis's friends were consistent. Even if they were different Noctises... Nocti? Anyway, if they were different, his friends were still consistent. So why wasn't he? Perhaps it was selfish, but it bothered him that he was erased and it seemed that everyone else was just fine and dandy.
And then came the time difference, for Prompto, he'd just seen Noctis a week earlier, while for Alex, it had been two years. Things just weren't adding up. Why the time difference? It had been said by the guy that there was no rhyme or reason to it, did that have something to do with it, then? Not that it mattered anyway, what with one of the rooftops being just a tad more fragile than the others. Namely because his foot went right through the rotting wood, catching Alexander in it as his body sank in, tearing away at some more of the wood. "Oh, f--" He barely got out before it all broke, and he fell crashing through. There was a brief moment he was airborne, before his back slammed into a beam, causing him to ragdoll and spin in the air as he came plummeting down with a thud on his front.
At least he still had the giant sword with him. And whatever he'd landed on was soft, so there was that, too.
Shhhh, don't bring that--actually do bring that up with Alex, Prompto. Wrongfoot him, it's always fun to do that one. He's thinking a mile a minute and maybe he could do with some calling out. Or not, well, that can be dealt with later. Fortunately it's not too much longer before they're staring at the wall. Right, getting out will be an issue. Well, not really, as Alex reaches into his jacket and pulls out a whistle. It's a quick sound, high pitched and shrill. A moment passes, and then another. It's quiet, and Alex crosses his arms. "So, the weather..." He looks up. "At least it's not raining, right?" He'll be here, he just takes his time. Probably. As long as the featherface didn't flock off somewhere.
But it's a bit more waiting, before finally the chocobo appears, fluttering over the top of the wall. He looks like he's struggling, and, well, Prompto had it right, the wings are stubby, but he's managing it. Alex has always been proud of the black plumage. That was not easy to get, after all. But the bird lands, making a soft chirping noise as it nuzzles Alex. "I know, I know. Got a package for you, big guy." At least before he looks back at Prompto. "This is Ragnabawk." Getting another kweh from the large black chicken. Really, he should've used a more majestic name, but too little, too late. Far, far too late.
But things did take one small turn, as Alex motioned for Prompto to get up on the chocobo. "Wait outside the city. If I'm not back by tomorrow or it looks like you're in danger, you're free to take off without me. Provo, the Rising Stones specifically." Yeah he was ditching him now that he was safe. Well, for a little, tiny bit. "I uh, I need to get my shit back." He'd left his stuff behind to get in, and well, some of that wasn't cheap or easy to replace. He doubted there'd be that much of a fuss, he hoped. He hadn't--Had they identified him? Oh, he hoped not. Then again, his description of "blonde guy in a jacket" was vague enough that maybe he could slip through, there was some hope, there. If not, then uh, well, he could probably figure something out.
Of course, the bird objected, giving Alex a swift peck, "Hey, hey! I didn't call you for nothing, I'll be back! Geez..." Ragnabawk was... aggressive. "If you can, make sure to feed him, he gets a bit pushy." As he backed off. "Right, so, uh, couple hours. See ya then." Smooth, Alex. Smooth. He'd at least save the whole Shadowbringer part for another time. Probably didn't want to do anything else just yet. So he just gave him an awkward peace sign and uh, ran off. Awesome.
If Alex was offended, he didn't show it. He just let Prompto speak his piece. Okay, an objection. He'd dealt with those before. A lot. Really it was par for the course when you were an adventurer. So, he did what he always did; try to see it from Prompto's point of view. Aaaaand it started making sense. He, well he didn't know much about Prompto himself, but with what had transpired in his world. Well, it was lopsided. Prompto knew Alex existed, and that was about it. Alex knew a lot more about the group as a whole. He could see how that'd be... bothersome. Right, yeah, he was pushing too much, he could see that. "Yeah, okay, fair. Sorry I made you feel uncomfortable. It sounds like I'm trudging up some bad memories." He concluded, crisis--well, if one even existed, averted. He gave a light shrug with a smile. "But if you do decide to stick around, could you please let me know if there's an issue sooner? I can't address it if I don't know about it and I'd rather resolve it than let it fester." Considering the whole 'wasn't gonna say it' bit, he had concerns.
Not his Noct, he puts it. Not his Noct. Those words hit a chord. Oh, not in the "oh I'll show you" manner. More on the nature of this world in itself. It hit him in that moment that despite his time here, he knew precious little about this world and its inhabitants. Or even how it worked. There was no lifestream, that was about it. "But, you've got a point, he probably isn't the one I know. Would explain why he doesn't remember me. I'd always thought it was something with this world like amnesia. I've met a couple others from my world in my time here; I'm a stranger to all of them." Amnesia had been his first thought. Well, duh. It was just like after Carteneau, he'd figured. Everyone had forgotten he had ever existed, but they remembered in the end. Give it time, they'll come around, they did last time, after all. Something to hold on to, at least.
Crossing his arms and rubbing his chin with the back of one finger, he continued for a moment. He spoke again, this time more softly, as if he was more speaking to himself than anything. "Maybe I was just never their... Mm." And he had to make peace with that, if such was the case. There was no cavalry coming. One couldn't remember what one had never experienced. There was nothing he could do but begin again, and Carteneau had given him plenty of experience in that regard. So at least there wasn't complete despair. That was a plus! Although wordlessly, he did take a moment to run a thumb over the palm of his hand, staring at it rather intently for a moment before pressing that thumb into his hand for a couple moments. It seemed as if he was using a surprising amount of force, but he stopped and he seemed satisfied.
Besides, if the voices were any indication, the guards were getting closer to their location. Though at this point it seemed to be less a pursuit and more a search. As long as they didn't do anything to alert them, then they'd be fine. He hoped. "Sorry, I'm rambling. We should keep moving." And with that, he started moving again, at least for a couple steps before he stopped. "Ah, if you get banged up, let me know. I can heal you." Probably uh, probably should've said that earlier.
Okay, a small chuckle escaped him at Prompto's insistence that he not do that again. "Suit yourself." Granted, it was for the best. Having him screaming the whole time really wouldn't help. "That's where Ragnabawk comes in. I can shield him from gunfire, but he needs to be there for me to shield him. I just don't want him getting shot on the way in." He took a moment to watch the sky. There was nothing there, which was good. "Take a look up, notice how they're not bringing anything in the air? We're not that much of a threat. And if they reported the hostage situation, they'll be clearing that building out first." This was why Alex didn't want to go in killing people. Aside from the moral issue of it, it helped at least temper the response. They'd play with kid gloves hopefully as long as he did the same.
Right, time to go. "Come on, then. With me." And that's when he's off, hopping across rooftops as he lands, rolls and rises with a practiced ease. It comes naturally to him, as if he's just born to it. Well, it's not. It's the result of bored days and nights doing this exact thing across other people's houses. It's the result of constant effort at that Twelve forsaken Leap of Faith game back at the Gold Saucer. It's the result of the grueling climb of the Kugane Tower. It's the result of the excruciating pain of the Moonfire Faire. Well, training in some agile jobs helped, yes, but mostly practice! Breathe. In, out. There's some shouting, but it becomes less and less. There's still a hunt going, if the occasional glance down reveals guards frantically searching, but they're out of the immediate heat. Perhaps they didn't expect the grappling? If he had to guess they probably swarmed the alley ways first, half expecting them to have jumped.
Keep Prompto with him. He'd just pick up the conversation from earlier! That uh, seemed like a good idea. "If it helps you any, where I'm from, you'd be considered a Machinist." He remarked. Guns, drills, flame throwers, turrets, robots, satellite lasers, that sort of thing. "You said only people like Noct have magic, though? Where I come from, someone having zero magical aptitude is very much an oddity." His mind drifted to the Coco brothers, their family of Thaumaturges, and the one little brother who couldn't perform any form of magic. Kid was so desperate that he went and got himself possessed by a daemon just so he could do it. He was glad that ended better than it could have.
But it just reminded him of one truth of this world. "In comparison, this world is... fragile. Nothing to really cushion it from a mage going all-out." Normally there was a lifestream to soak up any damage done to the land, that didn't exist here. Any aether Alex took from the world would take longer to be replenished, if it even would be. Moments like that, he was thankful he was a Red Mage, focusing mostly on using his own aether stores. There was another jump as he landed on the roof across. His shoes slid across the tiles for a moment as he fell into a roll before rising again. Maybe something about Prompto's world would cheer him up? "... So uh, the Regalia. Is that sort of thing common in your world?" He brushed himself off. He looked out, the wall was still a ways away, but if they kept moving... "I'd never driven anything that advanced in my world. I'm kind of bummed the one Cid made me didn't come here." He was bummed that he lost a lot of things.
... Maybe Prompto could help him remake the Kettle Nexus.
Ah, so the Ardyn button was a thing. Alex didn't say a word, he just let Prompto go on and on. Rather, as Prompto continues to go on and on, he could only think one thing to himself. Huh. It started as a small observation, really, watching him just fly into a sheer panic was rather telling. It reminded him of himself, shackled by sheer paranoia at the destructive power of Zenos and Emet-Selch. Well, more Zenos than Emet-Selch if he was being honest. While Emet-Selch was the more powerful of the two, he tended not to get involved unless something motivated him to begin with. While he most definitely did not want the Ascian around here, without the world being sundered or the people here fragmented, he doubted the Architect would really be that much of a threat. At least, he hoped that much though. Zenos on the other hand, Zenos went on rampages for the hell of it. And for a world filled with heroes and villains, the madman would be right at home here, and would do as he pleased. Zenos would be dangerous.
So this is what I'm like when Zenos or Emet-Selch get involved.
No shit.
Alex resisted the urge to react to his own thoughts, lest he give Prompto the wrong impression. Thank you, Fray. He thought sarcastically.
Finally, Alex held up a hand. "You, Ignis, and Gladiolus weren't there. It was just Noctis. In my world about two years or so before I came here." That represented one issue with him; the only other person who could confirm it didn't remember. Yes, he knew it. He knew it beyond a shadow of a doubt. But getting others to believe it was the problem. "And Noctis didn't seem that concerned about it. Hell, I offered to go with him and hunt Ardyn down but he just ran off to do his own thing. So breathe. He'll turn up." Ardyn, so far as Alexander knew, was a major threat. And that put Ardyn on a list, well, an extremely short list here on this world. Ardyn had the dubious honor of being quite possibly one of the only people here that would get Alex to drop the adventurer act and show what he could actually do as a Warrior of Light. Though to be fair, thanks to Caius, Kuja had also been added to that list as well, fun.
"But you are right, we gotta go. Can you jump from rooftop to rooftop well enough or do you need me to pull you along?" He could do it. Prompto was a small guy, and he was used to hefting around much larger objects. Really, either was good with him. The reaction to getting Rescued was great. Although now that he thought about it, probably having someone screaming the entire time broadcasting where you are wasn't the best of ideas, now was it? But he'd hold him to that. Ardyn was someone worth keeping tabs on. He just really hoped Prompto at least trusted him in the meantime. Because the more he thought on it, the more crazy he probably sounded.
Alex let out a soft laugh of amusement. Granted, it might make things more difficult with all the racket, but Rescuing someone never got old if only because they almost always screamed like that. It was over in a flash, went off without a hitch, mostly. Prompto didn't exactly land on his feet but Alex was pretty sure that nothing had been broken, at least. The Warrior of Light was only barely able to suppress the smirk when he let Prompto know "You can open your eyes now." The tethers vanished as memories came back to him from his adventuring days. He really had to start doing that again with other people. He'd forgotten how enjoyable the reactions were. But that only bought them time. They still had to find a way out of the city, and a place to lay low long enough for the heat to fall off. Could they simply make the jump or was he going to have to keep Rescuing Prompto as they went?
He crossed his arms. Right, he had questions he needed to answer. And questions that needed answering. But poor kid was obviously so excited, which told Alex that he did indeed have the right Prompto, at least. That meant that now he needed to find... Gladiolus and Ignis, was it? "So, to answer your questions. I do. He's a friend of mine - for my part. He got stranded in my world for a bit before heading back to his fiancee. At least I think it was her." A blonde woman in a long, flowing white dress. Truth was he was kind of envious of Noctis for a moment. That woman had been beautiful beyond beautiful. But he coughed before he sheepishly admitted. "He uh, he doesn't remember me, but that's something I've been noticing a lot since coming here. Before you worry, I'm not you, so I'd be surprised if he forgot you and the others." Scratching his cheek.
And then came the part where he needed to let Prompto down. Yeah, he wondered how well this was going to go over as he internally cringed. The poor kid just seemed so excited. Kinda like a puppy when the owner comes home. "As for the where, that gets a bit tricky. Last I saw him, he was in Torensten. We were talking about going after this guy named Ardyn, who apparently is also here. Then it's almost as if he changed his mind and ran off to do other things. I haven't seen him since. If my time with him in my world is anything to go by, I'm going to guess he's fishing and camping." That change had been so sudden, too, it was weird. Caius was off doing his own thing, making his own name. Good luck, man, you're gonna need it. You have no idea what's waiting for you.
Punching the palm of his hand with a fist though, Alex did perk up. Maybe this was a good opportunity. "But I am starting up an Adventuring Guild in Provo. If I know him like I think I do, he'll probably show up at some point looking for work. Would also give you a chance to get some cash." Sales pitch, go! Plus, aside from giving Prompto stability, it did have some boons for Alex, as well. Namely, use Prompto as bait to get Noctis to sign on, and then they'd really be talking. They should probably get moving soon, got places to go, enemies to flee, that sort of thing. But, there were other matters. Could be dealt with on the way.
"Now, Prompto, do you know anything about Ardyn? If you do, tell me everything. He wasn't the only one taking this threat seriously, was he?!
Welp, no idea where Original Sin was, then. That got rid of one of his options, then. Of course, the option to simply "go inside and burn the place down" was probably not something that Caius may have been up for. Still, a few well aimed Flares would... nah, best to move on, Noctis already had, anyway. "Let's see... Gladiolus, Ignis, and Prompto. That's them, right? I'll keep an eye out. Two when I can spare them." Those were the named Noctis gave him when he went and got himself stranded in Eorzea anyway. So unless it was someone else, then that worked. ... He wondered how the others were doing. Maybe he'd find Lightning here. Maybe Iroha had gotten back home. ... He could do without running into Shantotto though, that Lalafell or, no, what was she? Anyway, she terrified him.
Still, he mulled Caius's offer over for a moment. Join the Dragonblades? He wasn't one for mercenary work. He was more of an adventurer kind of guy. Granted, some may see that as the exact same thing, but not him. "We'll see about joining. But I will likely drop by to get everything you have on Ardyn. Noct seemed pretty tight lipped." But he could totally get the idea of thinking more like Noctis did. From their time together he'd notice they were pretty much Snark Knights Supreme. Still, at least he could sympathize with the dying part, having done that himself... in an alternate timeline, anyway. Two, actually, now that he thought about it. Keimusho said he came from a world where Alex had kicked the bucket in Doma. Hoo boy, he really wondered how that world went without him.
As the others left, Alex mulled things over for a bit. Torensten, right? They were in... actually, now that he thought about it, they were in Torensten. Shit, he could probably just walk over there right now. So what, he just went in and asked for Caius? First he had to find out where in Torensten--Ah he'd figure it out, one way or another. But any information on Ardyn would be appreciated. Kuja, too, probably. At least in this world he didn't have to worry about Zenos or Emet-Selch or Elidibus. Thank the gods for that one. But for now, he was content to finish up his drinking before moving on.
Alex blinked at Prompto a couple times. Well, there was a genuine enthusiasm for the birds there, he really had to give the kid credit. "Well, yeah." Granted, not all chocobos could fly back in the Source, but it was easy enough if you knew how to train them. Though perhaps he should have focused on one, that he knew what chocobos were, so either he's been here a while, or they're in his world. But the question was flattering, kind of. Well, he was supposed to be finding new work wasn't he? So maybe they could just sign him on? This kid was obviously a Machinist. Or at least he had the gun. Whether he had everything else that came with being a Machinist remained to be seen. They did need to find a way out of here. They could hold out but at some point it would just get overwhelming for the two of them, and he didn't want to go to the gaol if he could avoid it.
But a name. "Huh." He knew of a Prompto. When he'd camped out with Noctis a couple years back in his world, he'd gotten a rundown on his friends... and a promise that Noctis would come back and introduce them. 'Course not that the guy could be faulted, dying had a way of dashing plans. Though now that he thought about it, Noctis's case of death was taking an awful long time to kick in. Still, he squinted at Prompto, as if examining him. Yeah, from what he saw of the clothes beforehand, they looked like they'd come from the same world. Add in that they looked to be around the same age... what could it hurt? "You uh, you know a Noctis by any chance? I think he's looking for you. Either that or I've got the wrong Prompto." But that, well, that could be dealt with.
They were getting back up already? He should've known, honestly. A sleep spell was just a sleep spell, and even just firing it off with an Aero like he did would've undoubtedly diluted it. He took a breath, felt his aether flow through the floor. Hear. Feel. Think. Granted, that was more of Hydaelyn's shtick, and the Echo, and neither were here. But they were useful words for concentrating. Within a moment, pillars of stone erupted in the way of the stairs. It wouldn't hold them off very long and they could probably just get around it if they were determined. All he'd done was block the quickest paths. And any explosive would blast them away, it was only a simple Stone spell, after all. "Anyway, Alexander Sorel. Adventurer." He responded as he looked to the window. That might be their only avenue at this point.
So that was why another Stone spell was hurled through the window. Property damage was better than physical damage! Looking at the outside, he did notice an antenna. Corps-a-corps and a Rescue would do... "Gun away, hands to your side. Get by the window." He stated simply as an orange tether appeared in his hand, wrapping around the antenna as he started hurtling towards it through the window. Granted, this was supposed to be a spell used for more offensive maneuvers but, well, creativity did always work for him. Mid-air, he twisted his body, throwing out another arm towards Prompto to cast Rescue. Or "yank the poor sap towards you forcibly via orange tether." He just really hoped Prompto didn't move. An escape from the Rooftops would be a lot easier. Especially since he doubted they'd done anything to bring out a gunship, at least.
