This place... To the eye, it screamed beauty - Pillars of stone, carved and left to their stalwart positions, supporting the rest of the towering mass. A true feat of engineering, the design of minds both ingenious and devout. The temple had clearly stood for centuries, the home of one or maybe many faiths, the prayers of hundreds, thousands in the past, perhaps.
Now, it held little more than silence. Quiet, and the occasional creeping weed, rooted in the stone. Whatever lurked here, it was almighty to behold. But Vanille was not here to sight-see. Far from it. To the mind that could feel it, the beauty here was spoiled. Tainted by the presence of a single soul.
For someone who had seen chaos close up, who had touched it, convened with it and nearly given her life to destroy it, the overpowering weight of the darkness in this place had been too concerning to leave unseen to, even if she doubted she could do much about it. At least, that was what she thought, until the moment she set foot inside.
Feeling the strength of the insidious presence stronger than before now, she recognized it. It was not the presence of mere evil, mere malice. She had been hounded by this aura, chased by its bearer and the creature that drove her. She bit her lip as a pang of sorrow hit her, haunted by what she'd seen her friend as, what she had become, and then clenched her weapon as it was followed by a wave of dread, feeling he whispers of that foul creature that had the Savior as a puppet on the air.
The chaos was almost choking, the more she focused on it. Taking another step into the place, the name, which now seemed ironic, escaped her lips. "Lightning..."
She had intended to turn around once she knew that something was here. To fetch help, and add this to her list of wrongs to right... But if Lightning was here, she felt duty bound to stay, and see it through this time. Fang was not here to save her this time... But it changed nothing.
"You know I'm here." She whispered, not expecting any onlookers other than her presumed audience.
They say life's a waste, I say they lack belief. They tell me luck will travel, I tell them that's why I got feet. Left right left right, moving along to the pulse of a heartbeat.

Since arriving in this strange land, Aerith had struggled to find things to keep her reeling mind busy. There was much to learn about this place, and why she was brought here... How she even arrived, if there was anyone to help her. So many thoughts passed through her mind that it was dizzying. The simplest of tasks helped soothe her, and the people around the temple were pleasant helps as well. Few of them knew anything about the questions she had, but they were nice company to have, at the very least. They allowed her to wander as she pleased, though few dared to venture further than the outskirts of the temple. Aerith, however, had been intrigued about the temple and what secrets it held ever since she arrived...
In the crook of her elbow, she carried a small basket. Such a trivial item made her feel so at home, and it made her smile softly. Kneeling down and careful of placing her dress against the grass so as to avoid any stains, she plucked a small, white flower from the earth and held it to her nose. The petals tickled the tip softly, and her eyes closed as she inhaled its scent. She had not an inkling about what sort of flower it was, but it was lovely. Delicate and dainty, something like this would never have been found in her home. The faint thought of home made her smile fade ever so slightly... It was all very confusing. How could she miss something she could barely remember? Aerith let that thought pass, and she continued to wander around in search of flowers.
Ever so slowly, she had crept closer and closer to the doors and pathways that lead deeper into the temple grounds. She could not deny that there was something about this place that... drew her near. She could feel things... she could sense things. There was something very mysterious about this place, and she yearned to learn more... Aerith pressed a palm against the cool stone surface of the temple wall. Her fingers lightly traced along the symbols and markings that were etched into the stone, some of them faded and eroded down due to the natural degradation of such abandoned places. Why did the shamans and priests fear this place so?
As she rounded a corner, she could feel the pull growing stronger. Perhaps it wasn't just her curiosity tugging at her... There was something powerful here, and yet she could not quite place what it was, or where it was. All was silent and she listened. Not even the sound of the chirping birds could be heard. There was a faint whistle of the wind that passed through the halls, seeping in through holes in the wall where stones had fallen through. Along with the wind was another sound... A voice.
At first, she believed she was perhaps hearing things. Perhaps it was in her mind. But when she heard a longer phrase, a drawn out sentence, she knew for certain that she was not alone. Even a whisper carried itself along the quiet corridors, reverberating much louder than anticipated. Aerith was close to the sound and a simple turn of a corner brought her to a more open space, where she saw a young woman with vibrant hair.
Aerith clutched the basket closely to her. It was not as if she was terribly afraid, but not knowing whether this was friend or foe put kept her on her toes. The only beings she had met as of yet were priests and shamans... Easily discernible by their attire. This girl, however, was different. Different did not necessarily mean bad, but she had to be prepared.
Clearing her throat softly, yet loud enough to bring attention to the other, she smiled warmly and tilted her head to the side. "Hello there," she began, unsure of how to approach this person. "Are you lost?"
The key to survival was evolution. If something stayed the same it would get devoured over time by the changes around it. It was a very basic truth. Her power was already on the cutting edge, so what needed evolved was her tactic.. Here she'd been the aggressive hunter in her days 'awake' and 'free' - much as the Harvester was before this parasite had used her body as a conduit for its strength and sentience.
So how did a predator evolve its hunt? Simple.. Stop hunting.
The aura surrounding her was vibrant enough to catch the senses of those powerful enough to sense it.. which meant she only needed to draw their attention. What better way than to inhabit and curse a once-holy ground? The energy here was immense - ancient manna flowing freely in the veins deep in its center. She'd been resting here for a few days just drawing and soaking it in. This host - this physical body - was finally healed and at its pique of magical and physical ability once more.
A pulse of light in the far distance made the dormant eyes open. A soul was here. A strong soul.. no, two. Their light was wonderfully vibrant. Lightning stood slowly to her feet from the center of the large, open dome-like sanctuary. Roots of softly-glowing teal manna sprouted from the center of the floor and faded up the walls - creating just enough light to see from the open entryway to the back of the room. An entryway that they were very nearby.. Her 'hunt' had worked.
"You know I'm here." Ohhh, that she did. Though, she still made no aggressive movement and remained standing on the center of the roots. That girl had evaded her more than once when the Chaos sought her light. This time, she'd come to the web of the spider on her own. The other, though, she had never felt. Her light was.. different. If there were a spiritual equivalent of exotic she'd place it under that category. "Hello there. Are you lost?" Lost. If only they'd been so lucky.
In the low-lit glowing room of the temple's heart, she stood there. Waiting for them. Leaving was an option they'd sacrificed long ago.
There was a brief moment of silence, which felt like eternity - Vanille waited for her friend, or what was pretending to be her, to appear. Each passing second tightened her grip on the binding rod, every hair rising and standing on end. The very air seemed to thicken with tension.
So when the girl who had approached her from behind spoke, Vanille flinched, pivoting to face the newcomer with the speed of one standing on a knife edge, and not the most welcoming stance in the world; one of battle. Her breathing was heavy, but relaxed slightly as Aerith appeared. With a sigh of exasperation, her eyes widened as she realized that this didn't mean Lightning wasn't here. If anything, she only had two items on her menu now.
"Lost? N-No." Vanille said, her mind still racing internally. "I'm just... visiting a friend." She explained. Contrary to what some may think, Vanille was not expert at lying - but what she did do, almost without fault, was avoid the truth, even, if particularly under pressure.
She gave the girl a once-over, then glanced over her shoulders at the shadows cast by the grand walls and supports of the temple. With a gulp, she turned back to Aerith. "She's sick. Very sick... But she doesn't know it. Please..." She got closer, pleading. "You should go. I don't want her to hurt anyone."
Aerith wasn't exactly the crying image of combat prowess... Then again, neither was Vanille. Even still, she wasn't willing to take the risk - If she could save one more soul from Light's rampage, then she could feel good about something.
"There's nothing here worth seeing. Please, just-" Vanille spun back around, feeling a sudden waver in the temple's grim aura. Lightning wasn't moving, but she was aware. She wasn't moving. She was waiting.
They say life's a waste, I say they lack belief. They tell me luck will travel, I tell them that's why I got feet. Left right left right, moving along to the pulse of a heartbeat.

[attr="class","Tea"]@light @vanille Apologies for the wait. I am sorry for the sucky post, too...
Aerith had been afraid of that... And yet she had been prepared for such nervousness as well. It was why she remained calm, never once flinching or moving her body to appear threatening. Her smile stayed on her face, though it faded to a look of curosity now that the other woman had spoken.
"Visiting a friend? Here?" Aerith had only heard stories of this place being abandoned. Did someone really...
Then she felt it. She finally felt a strong, powerful energy that was very much on the root of evil. It wasn't like anything she had sensed in the temple at all before. What this girl was waiting for... It felt dangerous. Aerith seemed to not heed her words of warning. Once the girl had said her friend was sick, there was no going back for Aerith. If she could help, she would try her best. Even if this was a stranger... She sensed no ill intentions.
Aerith was about to speak, but Vanille had quickly turned. The air around them felt heavier. She could sense the girl's dread. She could sense the evil that rounded the corner. If only she had come prepared with a weapon. Aerith knew she could help, she would help despite this girl's protests... She just couldn't think of how. Aerith took a few steps forward to be at the girl's side.
She wasn't about to hand both herself and the new girl to Lightning on a silver platter. No way. From what Vanille had seen, she was guessing that whatever controlled Lightning was an instinct predator - It could act smart, wait in the ivory tower for prey to get a little too curious about the quiet... But it wasn't truly patient.
As long as Vanille held her own, it would come to her. It would succumb to the urge to move. She wouldn't give it the high ground it thought it had. Never.
Still, she needed Aerith to go! She was unarmed, for heavens' sakes. She sighed, closing her eyes and steadying her shaking body. She inhaled, exhaled...
This feeling felt familiar. This forced bravery. This mind above the matter. She had once been like this... Unbroken.
Without turning to her fellow, she spoke. "Yes. She is. What's your name?" She asked, eyeing every angle that Lightning could come from. Vanille had come here out of some 'obligation', she had told herself. Now she was rethinking - Not rethinking the idea to stay, but her reason.
She had come for answers.
"Please, I'm asking you to leave. You can feel it, can't you?" She repeated. "That power? That's her. That's all her." She looked Aerith in the eyes this time, and saw something. Something that told her that it wasn't going to be so simple to make her go. "... But you know that, don't you? And that's why you won't leave?" It was like looking at herself. Her old self, from when she met Lightning, Hope, Snow... All of them. Seeing it so close, she wanted to be that again. With all her heart.
But her legs were still trembling. Right now, it was just a brave face and ignorance...
Vanille took a deep breath. It would have to do for now. Biting her lip, she raised her head and shouted into the empty halls of the temple. "Lightning!"
They knew she was here. They knew that Lightning was aware of their presence. They knew they couldn't run. So why were they waiting.. Lightning slowly turned to face the large entrance of the tall, dome-like room. The manna continued to pulse and flow slowly through the veins of the floor and up the curved walls. Her name came suddenly from familiar, young lips like a shrill - piercing her ears and making her expression turn slightly sour as it bounced through the empty temple. Foul noise...
She took a steadying, preparing breath - hands empty and at her side - to focus on an image of the path she'd walked to get here and the one they were on now. In a flash of bright rose, she disappeared from the manna well in utter silence. As soon as the girl's voice stopped echoing and a few seconds had passed... Lightning appeared only a foot behind the girl, a small wave of air brushing between them, and she stood still. "You knew I'd be stronger.." the multitude of voices came from her lips.
A thick knitted material unlike her leather armor clung tightly to her torso with a a heavily armored shield arm now clad in steel; both shoulder and wrist. Her cat-like eyes cast for a second to the other girl with the strange soul, then back down to Vanille. "And you still came to the lion's den." Lightning's arm reached to her back above her shoulders in the darkness of the hall. A long, drawn-out metal scrape followed the slow lift of her arm until a blade nearly rivaling the size of her own body released into the air. "I can make it quick. It'd save us time."

[attr="class","Tea"]@light @vanille I am terribly sorry about the wait. :(
And suddenly, her stomach seemed to drop. She could tell by the way Vanille's stance and aura had changed that her friend... was the cause of the weird feelings around the temple. She responded to her question quickly, a simple "I'm Aerith," would hopefully suffice, for she wanted to keep on her toes. She had no way of protecting herself nor could she honestly protect Vanille... Such powers had yet to be reawakened. She also wasn't about to leave this girl alone. She'd never forgive herself.
As Vanille cried out, Aerith shot a glance toward the back of the room. The vines started to glow, and then fade. They pulsed with a green light and the shadowy figure of a woman came into view. The voice that was produced was... menacing. Unamused. Aerith held her tongue and simply held her ground.
But suddenly, the once shadowy figure was now behind them. She could feel the rush of the wind as it passed by her. Lightning was behind Vanille, and in between them both. Aerith's emerald eyes grew wide at what she saw. What she saw was... familiar.
So familiar.
The SOLDIER uniform. The large, two-handed weapon the pink-haired woman wielded. The buster sword... How did she--!?
"Cloud..." Aerith gasped under her breath. Was he here? Was he hurt? Was he alive? She felt a slight panic spread through her chest. Her heart fluttered with anxiety and her hands began to shake. "Cloud... Do you know Cloud? Where is he?" She tried her best not to sound so frantic, but when her friends could possibly be involved... It was not a situation she wanted to tread lightly in.
Vanille's whole body froze when the breeze brushed against her. She went deaf, feeling every, single, rapid beat of her heart. The split second she was paralyzed for felt like minutes, her heart ticking like the hands on a clock, broken by the harsh screaming of metal-on-metal. A lot of metal.
She didn't think. She spun, hand straight, crossing Lightning's cheek with a pitiful slap. Enough to cause Light to flick her head to the side, then slowly fix her gaze on her. Once more, she locked up. Unable to move, unable to move. Like stone.
With an angered growl, Lightning's hand came back around in a similar fashion that hers had, but this one connected with the force of a train, so much so that Vanille was sent careening off her feet and skidding across the floor. She impacted with a pillar, stunning her.
She heard noise, blocked by a ringing. Aerith was throwing questions at Lightning just as fruitlessly as she had before. As the vessel of chaos turned its attention to the other girl, Vanille painstakingly recovered herself, grimacing as she raised her weapon. With a click, the hooks unlocked and she cast it forward, its cords wrapping around the huge blade that Lightning held. She tugged at it, an grunt of exertion escaping her lips as she did so.
"Aerith... Move!" She gritted her teeth, pouring every ounce of strength into restraining the weapon. "Lightning... Listen... Listen to yourself! Just... Wake up!"
Fearlessly, the strange girl moved beside her prey and stared at her with a dreaded expression - not at Lightning, but at something else. "Cloud... Do you know Cloud? Where is he?" So she knew him.. His blade had interested her. After all, its weight mattered very little and its size was highly intimidating especially to some small thing like Vanille. And somehow, after she'd drawn from the manna of the temple, she had manifested her own.
Her chin began to tilt in interest at discovering that she'd somehow related to him before her face snapped to the side at the force of a slap that she hadn't bothered reacting to. It hadn't hurt. It was just.. irritating. In response, Lightning slowly turned her head to leer down at Vanille, eyelids forming slits of a slow, simmering anger, and gradually lifted her free hand across her chest and near her jawline. In one, smooth stroke the back of her knuckles slammed into Vanille's cheek and sent her flying to a pillar a few yards beyond.
"I'll take that as a no.." she lifted her chin over at her prey and sighed heavily with annoyance before looking back to Aerith to finish her thought. "Roaming aimlessly. Maybe rotting. What's left of him.. The darkness chained his light - choked it - and I put it out of its misery,"the large blade lifted to the air and her bare arm flexed like stone to bring it downwards on top of this new stranger to feed on her light as well.
Metal sang through the air as the wires clenched around it and tugged it harshly enough to keep it where it was for long enough to make the attack useless. It'd lost its momentum... So, she stayed there with it halfway into the air between them as Vanille kept her still. 'Lightning... Listen... Listen to yourself! Just... Wake up!' The Harvester's peeved glare looked over the metal pauldron covering her shoulder - again targeting this pathetic girl that kept standing in her way.
Wake up? Once a small speck of power within Chaos.. absorbed into this body, this strange being, then a parasite. Now, its controller. Its owner. "You couldn't fathom how awake I am," with a harsh yank, she pulled the blade to the ground further away in an attempt to make Vanille stumble forward and closer lest she let go.
