II. PERSONA
Vincent carries a lot of guilt for things that have happened in his past. Things that he rarely, if at all, divulges to others. Because of his stoicism, many see him as cold and aloof but that is not completely true. He may be quiet, and really only speak when something of importance is to be said, but he's not mean or uncaring. Though his appearance and demeanor may seem like something out of a horror novel, he is not monstrous, even if he may transform into one. But that's Hojo's fault. Everything is Hojo's fault. Vincent has cared deeply for others, in his past and present, which is why that guilt is on the surface.
Vincent remains guarded from others until he knows their true intentions and if those intentions are for a purpose that aligns with his own. Morally, he fights for his own convictions and will help others if those same convictions align. He might not have helped Cloud and the gang, had it not been for their same hatred of Professor Hojo. Vincent holds in a lot of rage, resentment and regret regarding this man and the things he has done to not only him, but the people he has loved.
He's a capable and dutiful person when it comes down to it. Being a former Turk, he has been properly trained in combat and was also a bodyguard. When it comes to his friends and loved ones, he is protective and fierce. It's just... hard to earn that love.

III. HISTORY
Much of Vincent's early life is a mystery. Most of what he can recall started when he worked for Shinra's "Department of Administrative Research" as a bodyguard to the scientists who studied there. His father, Grimoire Valentine, previously a Shinra scientist as well, is the one who helped him figure out his path in life. Vincent became a Turk and was assigned to protect the scientists leading the Jenova Project in Nibelheim. He began to fall in love with one of the scientists whom he was destined to protect, a woman named Lucrecia Crescent, a former assistant to his late father. However, Lucrecia carried immense guilt with her about the situation of his father's death, believing herself to be part of the cause of it, and thus she grew ever distant to Vincent. Despite his attempts to console her, she ultimately left Vincent and sought comfort with Professor Hojo, another researcher on the Jenova Project, and became pregnant with his child.
Vincent discovered the plans for the Jenova Project, and Hojo's intent on experimentation of Lucrecia and her unborn child, and he intented to stop them. He tried to convince Lucrecia away from her decision, but the situation turned hostile and Hojo shot him in the chest. Half-alive, Vincent could not muster the strength to fight Hojo off, and he became yet another test subject. When Hojo was done and bored, he discarded Vincent. Lucrecia's guilt kept rising, and in an effort to save Vincent, infused him with the power of Chaos, a powerful entity she found with Grimoire years ago. But Chaos' power was too erratic, and so she attached it to the Protomateria they had only experimented with until now. It was a creation of the Planet, to stop those forces who wanted to harm it... So it'd work, right? While his body was able to hold off Chaos, he still gained inhuman strength and other abilities, but ultimately did not wake up from the attempt.
When he finally did wake up, Lucrecia was gone... the child, who would later be known as Sepiroth, was gone... Hojo, Gast, everyone. Gone. And his body surged with power, and rage at what had happened. He felt responsible for many things, and to atone for his sins, he locked himself away in a coffin, to sleep undisturbed until his vengeance could be had.
Years later, his sleep was disturbed by some Turks searching for materia in the abandoned manor. He assisted them with their battles, but still did not want to face his sins. Yet again, he lay himself to rest in his coffin.
His slumber was again disturbed when Cloud and the others were searching for the terminal in the manor. He immediately grew defensive after realizing the group had stolen an identification badge and were intruding. He let Chaos take over, transforming him into a powerful, berserk Galian beast. The battle was halted, with Vincent being severely weakened, when Cait Sith recognized him. Reluctantly, he gave the gropu access to the rest of the facility and went back to sleep. Only... He realized that the group had similar goals, to stop Hojo and Sephiroth. Mildly intrigued and ready to face his guilt (as much as he could), Vincent joined the group.
Never stepping to the front lines, Vincent remained a stoic companion, offering his knowledge and services when the moment seemed right. He fought alongside the rag-tag group, he mourned the death of their companion. He ultimately saw the Planet saved. But it didn't feel like... enough. When he opened his eyes after it all seemed to be over, he found himself in Zephon.
