[attr=class, bulk] Celes scowled as she ducked under an awning outside of a bakery, already soaked through from the sudden oncoming rain showers that had struck at exactly the wrong time. Her clothes were damp. Her feet were uncomfortably slippery inside of her boots. Rainwater dripped from her bangs in heavy rivulets down her cheek.
All around, other visitors to the city were taking cover wherever they could – inside of shops, under jackets they held above their heads, under strategically placed awnings like herself – while others simply trudged on, resigned to be miserable and soaked straight through for the rest of the day. The locals, meanwhile, always had a source of shelter onhand. Every market stall came installed with a cloth covering both to protect them from the blazing sun and then from the onset of rain so heavy that it seemed to come down in sheets.
Celes wrung out her hair the best she could, eyeing the water that puddled at her feet distastefully, before she opened her bag to check on the content inside. She’d only been back a day and she was already running errands for the Wyvern’s Rest. Now that Caius had hired a secretary to handle her duties at the front desk, she’d been given a little more freedom for other matters. She chose to use that freedom to restock the Rest’s supplies. They’d been low on potions – an urgent matter for the training yard if she had anything to with said training – and it had taken her hours to find a suitable apothecary willing to sell in bulk.
She’d picked up a few other items while she was there. An echo herb or two. Five antidotes. Three phoenix downs. Thankfully, most of the items in question had come in tightly sealed bottles that protected them from the rain, but the phoenix downs hadn’t fared so well. She swore to herself at the sight of them, hoping upon hope that they would work just as well if the feathers were a tad worse for wear. Given the price of the things, she just might stomp back to the apothecary and demand a refund if they didn’t.
Celes waited. The rain continued on until, just as suddenly as it started, it trickled to a stop. The clouds cleared. The sun came out as bright as though it had never left. Celes sighed, trudging back into the streets through the newly formed puddles in the uneven cobblestone. She had never been a fan of summer in Torensten.
By the time she made it back to the Rest, she was in a foul mood not improved by the thought of her men seeing her in this state. Her yellow jacket and pants darkened with rain splatter. Her hair a dripping mess plastered against her forehead. And her bag, stupidly and distressingly made of paper, so damp it was about ready to split open. Still, there was nothing to be done about it, and so she pushed open the heavy wooden door and trudged inside with all the dignity of a wet cat.
”Tomoe? I got those things you asked for,” she called as she stepped through the doorway, her eyes firmly on the bag as though she could keep it intact by strength of will alone. ”Well, I brought a bit more than that, but I used my own funds so it shouldn’t be a worry.”
Far be it from her to go beyond budget and plunge the Dragonblades into debt on a whim. She wasn’t Caius, after all, and one look at the accounts told her that she’d been foolish to leave him in charge of their funds for as long as she had.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie knew that she wasn't technically in charge of the Dragonblades. Not that she'd admit it, but she knew despite what she told everyone that she hadn't actually been given equal leadership yet. However, Caius was currently away, and although his exact words had been 'this does not mean you are in charge Yuffie' or something to that effect, Yuffie had decided, yes, she was legitimately now in charge. After all, how many of the other Dragonblades had literally saved the world? With Caius gone they needed a leader with experience, a leader who knew how to combat evil, and a leader with great ideas like maybe implementing matching moogle cloak uniforms for the entire team.
Unfortunately, most of the Dragonblades didn't exactly agree, but that didn't really stop her from acting the part, which was why she was lounging in a chair that she had decided was where the boss would reside, while looking over various jobs coming in, looking for something fun. "Boring, boring.... totally boring..." she said as she flipped through requests for help, that involved boring stuff like killing rats on farms and such. "Why does nobody ever want us to find buried treasure? Or even, NOT buried treasure! I mean, sometimes, it's just in treasure chests. Which is kinda weird if you think about it. Who's leaving all these random bits of gear and gil in treasure chests in like, caves and stuff?" she asked out loud, not that anybody was listening.
It was then she heard the door open, and somebody enter between the dripping of water. Yuffie jumped down from her seat, and sped towards the entrance, only to see a very sodden, very wet blonde holding a falling apart paper bag. Yuffie paused, trying to piece together who she was. She was rambling about having brought some things in. Oh right, so probably, the delivery girl. That was probably why she couldn't afford an umbrella.
"Oh cool. We usually take deliveries round the back," Yuffie said, jabbing a thumb behind her. She had no idea if it was true, but it sounded like the sort of thing she should say. Now that she was in charge, of course. "Must be a great day for you though, right?" she asked. "I mean, you stop by here, and you get to meet the great Hero and Leader of the Dragonblades! Yep, that's right! It's me! The Single White Rose of Wutai! The one and only Yuffie!" she said cheerfully. "I don't usually sign stuff, but, uh, well, you look like you've had a day, so if you want me to sign your wet paper bag, it'll only be 5 gil," she offered with a smile.
[attr=class, bulk] The voice that greeted her was…not Tomoe.
Celes looked up in surprise to see a girl some years younger than she was. More of a child, really, no older than seventeen. The girl told her that deliveries were usually taken in the back which they most certainly were not considering the back of the Rest was taken up entirely by the training yard. Then she went on talking with the kind of blunder and gusto usually reserved for men dead drunk on wine and boasting about their feats of strength to some unlucky waitress.
For a moment, Celes could only stare at her. She felt her mouth open in surprise then twist in confusion. Her eyebrows furrowed. ”The…leader?” she repeated.
Had this child just walked in the front door and started declaring herself in charge? Where was Tomoe?
”This is our place of business,” she said as patiently as she could manage all things considered. ”You really shouldn’t play pretend. Are your parents nearby?”
Perhaps that was where Tomoe had gone. Some clients preferred privacy when they were requesting a job be done. This girl must have come in with a guardian of some sort and then been left to run wild while Tomoe negotiated a fair price for their services. Celes would have to have a talk with her about the children of clients and what they were and were not allowed to do.
Unfortunately, Celes didn’t have time to go looking for them because at that very moment, her wet and wasted back split open, spilling its contents all over the floor. Celes hissed a curse that was perhaps not appropriate for a child’s ears, but then again, Celes herself had heard far worse at a far younger age, growing up among soldiers and all that. She dropped to her knees, attempting to gather the potion bottles as they rolled away from her in an attempt to escape. One of them had broken on impact, sending shards of glass across the wooden floor that would have to be swept up before they hurt someone. Then she would need to find a mop for the potion itself.
What a lovely day. What a lovely welcome. Celes gathered as many of the potion bottles in her arms as she could manage and then began setting them aside, careful of the glittering glass shards that littered the floor like caltrops.
”Could you fetch Tomoe? The secretary?" Celes asked, her voice straining with the attempt at civility. "I could use the help.”

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie at least paused for the briefest moment when Celes stated that this was her place of business. She worked at the Dragonblades? Well, she supposed if she was their delivery lady, that kind of made sense. Although it raised questions about where she had been the entire time. She looked back, and then she grinned. "Ohhhh, you mean, you work for us? Right. I betcha been off sick or somethin'. Well, in that case, lemme introduce myself properly. I'm Yuffie! The new leader of the Dragonblades!" she announced. "Well, kinda. I mean, I let Caius think he's still in charge, but, he's not here right now, PLUS out of the two of us, only one of us has saved the world from being smooshed by a giant meteor, so I think we all know I should be in charge really," she 'explained' helpfully. "I had help on that whole, de-smooshing thing, by the way, but we all know I was the party leader really! No matter what Cloud says," she added.
She asked about her parents, and Yuffie put her hands on her hips and glared. "Okay, firstly, I'm not a kid. And secondly, no, my old man's literally on another planet. I think. Or maybe another dimension. I dunno, this whole deal is weird," she said, waving a hand dismissively. "And thirdly, of COURSE you should play pretend. If what you're playing isn't pretend, then it's not playing at all, is it? It's just, working... which is lame," she pointed out.
Yuffie let out a little guffaw as the bag tore, because somehow, it just punctuated this moody woman's... moodiness, and watched as it all fell on the floor. She watched as it rolled away, and stepped back with ninja like guile from the splattering liquid. Then she looked up when Celes asked about the secretary. "Tomoe? Oh, no, I sent her to the cafe to get my coffee. They won't serve me anything with caffeine anymore. They say it makes me a 'danger to myself and others', which, pfft, is a load of crud. So I send Tomoe to get it instead. Because I'm in charge. And that's the kinda thing I can do," Yuffie said with her usual big grin.
She swept down, and instead, began to help picking things up. Mainly because while Yuffie was very much an agent of chaos, she WAS also sometimes helpful, but also because helping someone pick up their dropped goods was the best way to check if there were any neat bits of materia inside. On this instance, there weren't, so she just dumped an armful of delicate bottles on the nearby counter with reckless abandon. "I can get you a mop though! I mean, I know you're the delivery lady and not the cleaning lady, but you should branch out! Discover new skills!" Yuffie suggested helpfully, rushing behind the desk to hold a mop out to her.
[attr=class, bulk] Celes tried for patience. She really did. Far be it from her to snap at a child so young and full of energy. Still, her patience had its limits even at a time such as this, and she had to bite her tongue to keep herself from losing her composure as the girl laughed at her misfortune. It was a short laugh, perhaps prompted by the girl’s clear offense at being taken less than seriously for her age. She had still done nothing to prove that she was worth being taken seriously.
But she did quite like to talk, and though half of what she said was nothing but blustering and bravado, Celes learned quite a bit, half-listening to it all. The girl’s name was Yuffie. She was acquainted with Caius. And she too had been dragged from her own reality into this shared fever dream along with them.
The pieces clicked together quite easily. Caius must have found her somewhere, likely boasting to some wolves on the side of the road as they prepared to rip her apart. He’d offered her a place at the Dragonblades out of pity. Or perhaps some latent parental responsibility. Now that Caius was gone, none remained who could keep her in check.
How lucky it was then that Celes had returned when she had.
Celes hummed as Yuffie confused her with the ’delivery lady’ and then scrambled behind the desk to retrieve a mop for her to clean with. She waited until the girl had found it before she stood, brushing off her pants from the debris that had gathered there.
”Sorry. I don’t believe I’ve introduced myself properly. My name is Celes Chere, co-founder of the Dragonblades. Seeing as I haven’t given consent to a third leader, you may want to rethink how you represent our organization.”
She straightened, fixing the girl with the hard look of a general reprimanding a particularly difficult soldier. ”This really is more the job of a new recruit, I'd say. I assume you know how to use that.” She gestured at the mop in Yuffie’s hand. ”Once you're finished, join me in the training yard. I’d like to see how you fare.”

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie's first thought as the woman introduced herself was weird, she has the same name as the boss lady. Her second thought, as Celes finished introducing herself, was;
Oh no.
Slowly, she retracted her arm that had been holding out the mop, her fixed grin remaining in place with a slightly nervous laugh.
"Well, it's really more of an unofficial thing. See, I'm SUPER experienced, and I've helped save the world and kill a guy who was basically a god, so, it makes sense that people look up to me as a big hero," Yuffie explained quickly, backtracking on the 'officially' a leader thing.
She glanced back at the mop, and back to Celes. "Sure, I'll get a new recruit to do it, as soon as I see one," she replied with the kind of confidence that wilfully skipped over any possibility of knowing what Celes had meant. She waited just a moment after Celes had left, grabbed a piece of paper, and quickly scribbled on it.
To Tomoe,
Celes ordered you to mop up this spilled potion.
Love,
Yuffie
And then a few moments later, she scarpered after Celes, bursting out into the training yard with her usual energy.
"Really, I gotta prove myself again? Hasn't Caius told you 'bout me? He's always writing you letters! An' I kicked his butt to prove I belong here," she said, which might have been a tiny exaggeration but she stuck to it. "Also, I mentioned the whole, saved the world thing, right? Seriously, you're lucky to have me really!" she pointed out.
And then she hopped to the side, throwing a few air punches, to demonstrate how much ass she could kick. "But if I gotta kick your butt too to prove it, let's go! C'mon!" she said eagerly, drawing her shuriken with a big grin on her face, excited and ready to go.
[attr=class, bulk] Yuffie followed her far too quickly to the training yard. It was hardly a few minutes before the girl came practically skipping out after her, eyes bright until she started arguing again. Celes had no idea how Caius usually handled her. Perhaps he didn’t and that was where the problems began. Perhaps he would have preferred that they go easy on her, considering her age and relative naivete. If she’d only been a child they’d decided to take in, that would be one thing. If the girl insisted on calling herself a Dragonblade, boasting of it even, then that was another entirely.
And Celes was not Caius.
She let the girl speak her mind, and it seemed she had quite the mind to speak. She was tired of proving herself, apparently. Part of Celes wanted to point out that, no, Yuffie had not been so important that Caius had written about her. Maybe if she wracked her memory (and looked through the letters again), she might find some mention of her, but he gave absolutely no impressions, no confidence, and no instructions on how to handle her. Which left it entirely up to Celes’ discretion. Wonderful.
She must have had the wrong idea by what Celes wanted from her in the training yard, considering how she’d drawn her weapon already. She had no doubts that Caius had sparred with her before if that was her expectation. Celes fixed her with a look that was entirely unimpressed.
”I meant you,” she said. ”You are a new recruit, and I want you to clean up the mess in the lobby. Once you’ve finished with that, we’ll run training exercises. I want to see your stamina, strength, dexterity, and most importantly, your self-discipline.”
It didn’t so much matter to Celes if the girl really could fight a god as she claimed. So could most that came from beyond this strange gathering point of a world they all reluctantly called home. It didn’t matter even if she could defeat Celes. If the girl had no restraint then she wasn’t worthy of being called a Dragonblade, and that was that in her mind.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie's grin faltered into what was slightly more of an abashed smile as Celes instructed her to go and clean up the mess, telling her that she was, in fact, the new recruit, even though as far as Yuffie was concerned, she'd been a Dragonblade for ages now. But then she listed all of the things she wanted Yuffie to demonstrate...
...including self-discpline, and Yuffie's grin returned to its full, broad diameter.
"Soooooooo..... self-discipline would mean staying true to the path I've decided, right? So, since I already decided not to clean up the mess, wouldn't it be NOT self-discpliney of me to then give in to your orders even though I already decided not to? Sooooooo, if I've gotta have self-discpline, it means my only choice is to NOT go and clean it up. Sorry," she shrugged with a grin. "I don't make the rules. You do. And that's the rule you just made," she said happily.
"As for the rest, jus' point me at your trainin' exercises, and I'll show you what I can do," she said, throwing some air punches again. "Didja know I'm the Champion of the Pagoda? Wutai's Greatest Warrior? Seriously, throw whatever you got at me, I can take it!" she beamed with enthusiasm.
Hopefully, by the time this training session was over, Celes would be agreeing to put her in charge of the Dragonblades, just like she thought. Although all this leadership stuff seemed pretty dull. Maybe she was better off not doing that. Although that depended on exactly how much mopping up messes NOT being leader meant that she had to do...
[attr=class, bulk] How old was this girl? Fifteen? Sixteen? Celes could have laughed though she knew better. Instead, she merely raised her eyebrows as Yuffie, apparent god-slayer and hero to the realm, went about making her excuses. It was pure childish whining, and that was all there was to it. She hoped to have her way by merely exhausting Celes into giving it to her. At that age, Celes had been living in barracks, waking up every morning at dawn to prove herself to a training yard of preening young men who wanted nothing more than an excuse to dismiss her.
The longer Yuffie talked, the more Celes became convinced that no one had ever said no to her in her entire life. Gau was more principled, and he would eat raw meat off the floor if you let him.
”I suppose you have a point,” she said as she looked the girl over, utterly unimpressed. ”Self-discipline does require one to stay true to their core beliefs, and if yours require that you never clean then I suppose there’s nothing else for it.” Celes crossed her arms, fixing Yuffie with an icy look of absolute and unquestionable resolution.
”I’ll take that as your resignation then. From this moment on you’re no longer a Dragonblade.”
Perhaps Caius had taken her in out of a sense of pity. This was certainly not a move that he would have ever taken if that was the case. It wasn’t a move that Celes particularly wanted to take either considering the girl might simply walk out the door never to return. And then what? Perhaps she would be able to take care of herself. Perhaps she wouldn’t. But she’d know a place she could go once the world had humbled her a little, at least. Celes had no patience for anyone who would grind their reputation into the mud.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie's eyes widened in shock, and she quickly ran, half waving her arms, to stick her head in Celes's face with frantic, worried energy. "Nonono! Don't throw me out! Please!" she said quickly. "I didn't say I'd never clean! I-I just said this one time, 'cause it was self-discipline, b-but-" she paused. "I'm a ninja! And deception is the way of the ninja! And what's more deceptiony than lying to yourself? So if I lied to myself about not cleaning up then it's not even not self-discipline it's just me being a good ninja! So I can totally clean it up! Please don't throw me out!" she said again, before dashing inside to grab the mop.
A few minutes passed, and then she ran back out again.
"There! All cleaned up!" she said, radiating a mixture of pride and worry. "Sooooo.... now you don't have to fire me, riiiight? I can still be a Dragonblade?" she asked hopefully.
"Ever since I got here, this place has sucked! Back home, everything I did, I did for Wutai. That's my home, by the way. Even when I did the bad stuff, I did it 'cause I was trying to help my home. But here, I don't have a Wutai. I don't have anything to fight for. So I found the Dragonblades. And you guys are heroes and I was a hero and I wanna be a hero again so I need to be a Dragonblade!" she explained, her tone earnest, if frantic and as confused as ever. "Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?" she begged, quite literally, hands together towards Celes, desperation in her eyes.
