Loud. Noisy. Illogical. Humans. Living, restless, and pointlessly toiling bipedal creatures.

When Mikoto needed a break from them, she retreated to her literal ghost village in the middle of the woods. Here she made herself content tending to the spirits and keeping the village clean. When the forest took victims, she would pillage some of the inventory left behind. It gave her a nice menagerie of books, potions, and tools. It was a comfortable life. The spirits did well to give shapes to her memories to make her feel more at home.

And yet, despite her retreat, these intruders came with hammers, iron nails, and trash to defile the forest with their protests. Seeing the spirits trembling in their angry red glow, Mikoto left to scope out the situation.

So here she was, staring down at these forest invaders from the gnarled barren treetops. Did they not see why the forest ate them? This. This was it.

Neither helping, nor hiding herself, she simply stared down and watched from the shadows of the forest. Her tail twitched in annoyance at all the ruckus. Her feet dangled and a hand pressed into the rough bark to hold her steady.

It was a group of volunteers of many skills - hunters, farmers, adventurers, and some youthful helpers. Mikoto narrowed her eyes to read the signs. Something about “Turn Back”, “Danger”,
“Beware”, and “Not worth it.”

Well, it seemed they held some level of awareness that they should not travel its paths... Even though they did not pay any heed to those same warnings to put up the signs.

“It’s pointless.” Mikoto quietly said without much warning. “They will come anyway.” They always did. No matter what. Why bother with the efforts if they did not work? Mikoto could already see one of the signs start to be grasped by living vines.
