"That's great, I'd definitely want to be friends with you, you've helped me a great deal!" said Nick as he followed Claire to the registration desk that was inside the building. "You can wait here if you want to, I don't mind." He then watched as she went up the registration desk and announced that they had a new applicant, which was him of course. He'd gently walk up to the front of the desk for registration and said to the person who was sitting there, "I'm Nick Zixian, a pleasure to meet you!"
Following that, the young teenager was given a form to fill out. He'd look over it at a moment and grabbed a writing utensil. He stared at it for a moment before beginning to fill out the registration form. He filled it out the best way he could possibly do so. He filled out his location of birth, which was the city of Gaia in his previous world. He then listed his age, gender, name, and his two known spells: Fire and Protect. He had written stuff down on a scroll before, but never used this kind of writing tool since he was used to writing in quill and ink.
Once he had finished filling out the form to the best of his ability, he then placed it gently on the registration desk. He then turned to Claire and said "So... anything else I should know this exam, and what was that writing tool I was just using? I never used something like it until today..."

Claire wasn't the type to get shy but she also wasn't the type who was praised in such a genuine manner either. It left her blushing faintly before she replied, "Then I'll be here, for you." that's what friends did, after all. Briefly, she wondered if she'd made any friends...her own age, that is. She got along with her classmates well enough, pranks aside. There was a certain guy she didn't get along so well with but her twin did. Honestly? It seemed more like she'd made good acquaintances her age but hadn't passed that barrier. She'd been having so much fun that it didn't seem to occur to her, until now.
In her past life, the situation had been similar; acquaintances she'd been on good terms with but due to the amount of chores she needed to do, as well as taking care of Serah, she'd likely taken those for granted. Tunnel vision, she was just living with a simple focus and now that she was free of that, there was still adjusting to do. Lost in her thoughts, it was her eyes, noticing Nick looking at her, lips moving that pulled her back from self-reflection. "Oh, the writing tool you used is called a fountain pen. The evolution of quill and ink. The ink bottle, as it were, is inside the 'quill'. The tip might feel similar to some extent but also a bit easier too. There are still places that offer quill and ink for tradition sake." she explains, glad to be of immediate help.
Fortunately, Claire paused, long enough to recollect the question prior to the pen! "Oh, yes. It's not about how much spells you know but your application. They're going to test how well you can think on your feet and use those spells creatively." there, a good bit of advice, from someone who passed said exam no less.
Once the registry was reviewed and the examiner ready, he'd come out and take Nick into one of the testing rooms. An area safe enough for magical testing, with some practice dummies for offensive spells.

"Alright then, thank you...." said Nick as he lips curved into a smile after he heard Claire mention that she'll be there, for him. It certainly made him less nervous about the whole exam. When he was given his answer about what writing tool he was using, he'd give the response "Oh wow! That sounds revolutionary! I used to use Ink and Quill as a child, and this pen sounds like a great technological marvel!" He was excited about it since his original home world didn't have anything like this at all when it came to the tools of writing. Everything in his world was written with a quill dipped in ink, and that how it was done.
As Claire went on to explain how the exam worked, the young teenager made sure to listen carefully so he could understand everything. When the explanation was done, he said to her "Ah, I see. Very good to know about. Thank you for your wisdom, I shall do my best to perform well on this examination." as he saw the examiner come into the room and told him that they were ready to start to the examination. Nick said to them, "I shall follow you." as he did his best to follow the person to wherever they were going to bring him.
After a few minutes, he arrived at a room filled with big figures that seemed to stand very much still. Maybe they were practice targets? He had heard from his mother how the local guards in Gaia practiced their sword-fighting on hay figures that looked like a potential target, so he believed it was like that. He then asked the examiner "May I begin my exam?"

Nick's reaction to the innovation of the fountain pen was too priceless. It really was revolutionary but she was from a world where they'd gone well beyond this. Though she could tell, Nick wasn't and that meant he was in for some "magic". The Magic of Technology that is~ "Stick with me, friend. I'll really dazzle you with some revolutionary goods." she muses aloud before he goes off. Once Nick assessed the examination area, he asked if he could begin and the Examiner tossed him something. It was a magic crystal, fortunately it would not break even if he fumbled it.
"The first part of your test is your magic capacity. Hold the crystal within both your hands focus upon your magic."
This crystal could determine two key things. The first was how much mana he had within him. The second, how much spells he could possess and what spell type they were.
"The second part of the exam, is display the spells you know and how efficient you are at using them. The targets are naturally provided to demonstrate offensive spells but aren't strictly required. What is required, is to perform your spells while holding that crystal in place. Think of it as a testing crystal."
Admittedly, the Examiner's explanation was a gross simplification. The crystal could do a bit more than that and had a slightly different name. However for the purposes of many prospective students, 'testing crystal' was perfect.

Nick looked at the examiner as he caught the crystal that was tossed to him, he then listened to them explain the first part and second parts of the examination. He gently examined the testing crystal itself, Which looked pretty interesting in itself. He then nodded to the person giving the exam as he made sure to do his best to focus his magic as he held the crystal in both of his hands, taking a deep breath in and then slowly exhaling as he focused.
Once he had done that to the best of his ability, he went onto the second part of the examination. He thought to himself 'Alright then.... let's do our best here....' as he held the testing crystal in place. The first spell he would cast is Protect as he took a deep breath and then said to himself "Protect!" as he attempted to cast the spell, which did seemingly work as he felt some form of protection on him. The next one he would try to cast while holding the crystal was Fire, he sometimes had trouble with this particular spell. But he was going to try his hardest to cast it! He didn't want to give up this easily, he had to show the examiner what he was capable of, even if he didn't have many spells at the moment. He definitely wanted to learn more spells in order to increase his knowledge in magic and the amount of spells he could use.
"Fire!" He said to himself as he attempted to cast the spell and aimed it towards the training dummy, only for it to oddly fizzle out. He decided to give it one more try as he gave it another try, making sure to aim it towards the training dummy in the room. "Alright.... Fire!" This time, the spell actually worked as he launched a small ball of fire towards the practice target that was set up in the room. He hoped that this would be good enough to show that he had the potential to be a Red-Mage. He then awaited for what the examiner had to say on these results. He thought to himself 'Mother.... I am hoping that you're watching from the skies in spirit... It's not been easy without you. But I will find a way to live my life, and this exam is part of that journey!'

When casting Protect the crystal took on a white glow and confirmed to the Examiner that the spell was successful and what type it was. He didn't seem to write down any results, only observing Nick's magic in action. The next spell was Fire and the crystal attempted to turn black but due to the spell fizzling out the first time, it took on a grey colour. Fortunately, Nick's determination meant the Examiner didn't have to urge him to try again. The second casting of fire was much better and hit the target, creating a spectacular display as the dummy was alight but didn't spread the flames. Instead it would vanish into particles of light and a new dummy would emerge in its place once the spell effects ended.
The crystal did turn black this time in response to Fire. When the spell ended, it became a solid red and only then did the examiner speak up:
"I see, you're a Red Mage or at least, you have the potential to be one. Your offensive side will be what we work on, as it requires a larger capacity of mana. Support magic is more about efficiency and speed. I noticed it with how effortlessly you casted protect. This is wonderful progress and a good time to enter our University. I'd like to formally welcome you to our University and help you with enrolling in certain classes. We have a few where mages of differing types are all together and then some specialized courses for each type of Mage. We can speak about that more once we leave this testing area. Do you have any questions?"
He'd approach Nick after stating the results as he'd hold his hand out to receive the crystal. That was what recorded his exam results and would aid his teachers in curating their curriculum going forward. The examiner was more a witness, verifying the results and adding much needed human oversight into the process. Soon enough, Nick would be able to return and true enough, Claire was waiting outside patiently.
"So, how did it go~?" she'd ask though she was pretty confident he'd pass. There were a few electives that she could recommend to him if he wanted additional advice. It would place Nick in quite a few of her classes. Given her own flexibility, Claire could be a Red Mage as well. It's just, she wasn't quite sure where she wanted to go as of yet. Only that she wanted to get more combat experience in addition to using her magic.

"Thank you sir, it'll be a great honor to learn in a great educational building such as this place!" said Nick as he gently gave the crystal back to the examiner. He then walked out of the testing room with them. He was quite happy that the testing went great, a step closer to becoming a Red Mage was gained. However... he was going to need to do more training in order to become a Red Mage. Today, he has made progress towards his goal. One thing that surprised him that the dummy that he had hit with the Fire spell didn't spread the flames, but instead turned into particles of light and disappeared. He thought to himself "Well mother... I've taken the first step to becoming a great Red Mage like you were..."
After exiting the testing room with the examiner, the young teenager looked towards the man who watched over his testing and said to him "I actually have two questions: will these classes cost anything, and what kind of classes will I be taking?" He was certainly curious about what this university had to offer and how much it was going to cost him. After all, this couldn't be without price right? Because he did hear from Caius about the magic school costing some Gil, something he didn't really have.
When he saw Claire again, he was asked by her about the results of the test. He smiled towards her gently and said "I believe I did a good job. While my Fire spell took some warming up, I did cast it on the second attempt. I was able to also cast my Protect spell on the first try, so I seem to be pretty good on Defense. I must definitely work on improving my Offensive spell casting." Nick was definitely very excited and eager to start learning more spells and improving on his mana capacity. He almost couldn't contain himself, and his excitement was quite visible on his face. Nick looked at his mother's staff that he his held in right hand and imagined what his mother would say to him. Just as he thought about it, he thought he could hear his mother's gentle voice speaking to him in his ears. It had to be! He looked around the room for five seconds, and suddenly saw a blue transparent figure in front of him, standing next to . It appeared to be his mother Zaellia from the appearance that he saw. This ghostly figure was wearing a robe that was similar to the Red Mage's Robe she had worn in the past, and she had long hair. He asked himself "Mother....? Is that you? Have you appeared in spirit from the skies above?"
"Yes... it is your mother. I am proud of you my son... you've started on the right path. For the times will be tough, but I believe you'll be able to get through. You've definitely grown, but you have a lot more growing to do. Stay true to yourself, even if you stray at times. The friends you make along the path of life, will help you in times of need. Farewell for now... my son. I shall see you again..."
Nick watched as her ghost vanished from sight in a small circle of blue sparkles, he was quivering in sadness. He almost couldn't contain himself as some tears streamed down his eyes. He wiped the tears using his sleeve as he looked back at Claire.

"These classes do have a basic cost for purposes of covering operations, it is very cheap. There are mandatory classes that one takes in order to pursue various roles within Torensten itself. There are also elective courses, that you choose to better yourself as a Mage. Those costs vary but as you're at the beginning of your studies, the costs would be lower than ones for experienced mages."
The instructor explains and once they were back outside, he'd be able to obtain the documents to register for the courses. Beneath the syllabus, there was a cost listing for the fundamental courses. When Nick explained how it went, Claire nodded. "I'm confident you'll be able to do it. What I'm worried about now is, you're new here, right? I have a twin sister who arrived in Zephon years before I did. She's been helping my sister and I financially. I'm certain she would be happy to help you out, my other sister works here as a Teacher so you'll probably be in one her classes. She'll also help you out." Claire effectively volunteered both her sisters without consulting them but they were nice and it wouldn't be a big deal.
This had kept her busy as she was thinking of which classes to recommend when it seemed Nick had a moment. She looked to his staff and then the expression on his face and seemed a bit puzzled. She knew enough to be quiet until the moment passed, it would be quite rude to interrupt after all. Once it concluded, she approached Nick and pointed at the suggested electives. "You want to be a Red Mage right? The combat teacher is quite excellent. It's also one of the cheaper electives." Red Mages with their flexibility could do what Black and White Mages couldn't, that's what made this elective quite valuable.
"My next recommendation is this class about Magic Crystal usage, they're a big part of the culture here." it was also the class she had the most mischief in. Even though she had a casual smile on her face while mentioning it. There wasn't as many electives for a freshman. Bringing down the initial costs was an important factor. As the mage grew, there were more options that weren't necessary to work in Torensten. These were thus personal advancement classes. Incorporating more theory like conventional university.
"Lastly and I guess this is fairly important. If you'd like to make your own money, there's a job board further into the city, I can show you when we're finished."

Nick was rather relieved that the classes weren't expensive and that there were some teachers that could help him out with his classes, he said to Claire as he looked at the syllabus "That's good, it's always good to have help. Can't just learn everything by myself after all, and about that combat elective class... I don't think I'd mind. I could use more skill in combat." He figured it'd be nice to get some combat skill under his belt, it'd make him better in actual fights.
The next recommendation given to him by Claire was the Magic Crystal usage class, which did rather intrigue him. Could he possibly learn to use a magical crystal to cast spells with, especially if he staff broke or if he didn't have it on him during a battle. It'd be very helpful to learn about. He'd respond to her saying "Magic Crystal usage, don't think I'd mind learning about that. It could come in handy."It seems that these classes he was going to take was going to start on a simpler path, which was a good thing, or at least as simple as it could be. Everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to learning magic.
Now it was onto the next important aspect: getting the money to pay for them. Nick was going to need a lot of gil to pay for the classes even as cheap as they are. A payment is still needed. When Claire offered to bring him to the job board, he'd nod towards her and responded with "Sure, I wouldn't mind going there and checking it out after we are finished here. After all, these classes won't pay for themselves." He didn't know what jobs would be up for grabs, but it was definitely worth inspecting to see what he could take on.

"Well then, first things first." Claire declares once he opted to take her suggestions. He'd need to fill in those elective classes and then came the issue of payment. "My older twin sister will cover you for now." no consultation with Lumina on this, of course... She approached the registration desk and proceeded to make the arrangements. It's a good thing the twins weren't real twins in the conventional sense. Claire and Lumina were the same person, with one being a fragment of her older self, from the future. At least it was the future for Claire. Thus, while she didn't consult her 'twin', she knew what Lumina would say and do in a way twins couldn't replicate completely.
Even as she could hear said twin saying 'For emergency purposes, okay, Claire?' in her mind as she made the payment. Claire effectively wrote what was like a modern day check/cheque. "That should do it, there's no rush in paying this back or anything. So when we get to the job board, try to take things that you'll be comfortable with, rather than going for a major payout right away, okay?" honestly, she'd prefer to help him get enough for living expenses at the very least. Being an Outlander was hard, it made her grateful that she reunite with her family in Zephon, instead of having to do this all alone.
All that remained was certain signatures from Nick and then the admittance scroll, which was identification. It would help with some of the jobs too honestly. "There's also another good means to earn money long term. There's a certain guild of mercenaries that I'm constantly frequenting." Claire begins, her facial expression lighting up at the thought. "They're called the Dragonblades and I know their leader. Well Co-leader, Co-founder. He's a nice guy and I've been helping him with his...love life." or rather, the lack there of. Having set him up on some dates, Claire had a feeling that was going to change. Which meant, he'd owe her and thus her warm smile was becoming very mischievous indeed.
"I'll introduce you to him eventually. They do their operations from the Wyvern's Rest." that should do it, though she took a moment to ponder, left finger and thumb grasping her chin. While her right hand rested upon her hip, contemplating if she'd covered all the essentials for someone who just arrived. "There are some inns close to campus, as well as near the job board. It's essential to have a roof over one's head. Your choice where you'd like to setup temporary dwelling until you're situated, Nick?" Claire would conclude as the room typically covered a meal at least. The remainder of the money would be for other meals and certain equipment for studying, assuming the young Farron did the basic math and logistics correctly.
