Zack had always been a man who had a way with words. He knew how to get himself out of most situations, and could rely on his strength and ability to fight to get himself out of things he couldn't talk his way out of. To be honest, he would much rather figure things out than fight, but would do what he needed to in the end. He was starting to think that this situation might not end up in a fight, and he was really glad for that. Who knows, maybe he would end up with a new friend out of the whole ordeal.
When asked about Provo, Zack shook his head. "No I haven't. I've only been to Torensten so far." It was strange to even himself that he had been on Zephon a few months now and had yet to really explore. Zack loved seeing new places and meeting new people, so staying in one place for so long was really kind of odd for him. Though he had made a decent amount of money by doing that, so he at least had that going for him.
Zack was about to answer the question about not being from there when the guy kept talking. It seemed realization had dawned, and Zack was glad for that. He listened as the guy spoke and gave a small chuckle when he finally stopped. "Nope, definitely not from here. Got gunned down by the company I work for and woke up here." It was probably not that healthy to talk about his death that way, but Zack was over it now. Well, mostly.
From what he could tell, the other guy, now known as Prompto, liked to talk as well. This would prove to be interesting. Just when he was going to answer, Prompto suggested just what he had been thinking himself. "Yeah, that's a good idea. Let's head out this back way. I didn't see as many guards in that area." Heading down a little ways, Zack ducked under some rubble and headed towards an opening near the back.
"Where I'm from, huh. Well, where I was born was great. It was a little town in a rural area. Everyone in the town knew each other and helped each other out. We would harvest food together, walk to school together, everything." Zack missed the heck of Gongaga, and would give anything just to go back and stay there for the rest of his life. He couldn't now, and he wondered how his parents were doing.
Just as he opened his mouth to continue on, he heard a guard talking. Grabbing Prompto by the arm, he pulled them both against a wall, which made dust and small rocks fall as he did so. Peering around the corner, he saw three guards right outside the hole he had found. "Well, we could either wait until they move away, find a new exit route, or fight them. Which sounds more fun?" Zack gave Prompto a smile as he waited for an answer.

[attr=class, bulk] Zack confirmed that he wasn’t from around here which made Prompto feel a little better though the details on that were…
Concerning.
”You uh. Huh?” He got gunned down? That was…
”Okay, you’re gonna have to slow down on that one because that sounds real bad. Like, are you okay? Are you hurt? Why, uh. Why did they shoot you? Or were they like evil or something? Or was it like a gang thing? Were you in the mob? That sounds like something out of a crime movie.”
He was probably getting ahead of himself.
”We can, uh. Talk about it once we’re out of here. Yeah?” Prompto tried for a grin, but he didn’t think it was very convincing. He was still way too on edge for that. Zack agreed to head out with him, and he went on ahead, leading the way as Prompto followed carefully behind him.
Now that he could get a good look at him, it was obvious that Zack had never been in any real danger climbing around in here. He was tall and muscular, sure, but he moved with a certain grace that reminded him of Ignis. His steps were light, almost perfectly balanced though it didn’t seem like Zack was thinking much about it. Prompto sure was though. He was, perhaps, overthinking it as he worried that every step might cause the whole building to come crashing down on them.
Zack led them out the back way. Prompto struggled to keep pace. He thought about voicing his fears, but somehow managed to bite his tongue. He didn’t want to attract any outside attention when they weren’t technically supposed to be here.
Instead, he listened to Zack talk. Apparently, he was from somewhere out in the country. Prompto liked that kind of place. Nothing but open road and camping and your friends at your side. He liked the city too though with its warm beds and showers. Prompto wasn’t too hard to please, really.
”That sounds…pretty nice!” Prompto said around gasps for breath as he climbed, balanced, and scrambled his way behind Zack. ”I come from somewhere that's- Ack!”
Before Prompto could finish, Zack had grabbed him and shoved him against a with enough force to take his breath away. At first, Prompto thought that maybe he really was finally attacking him, but then he saw the look on Zack’s face and where his eyes were fixed. Prompto took the hint and followed his gaze to a couple of guards roaming around outside their makeshift hiding place. Prompto frowned.
Well that didn’t look good.
”Well,” Zack whispered, ”We could either wait until they move away, find a new exit route, or fight them. Which sounds more fun?”
”Wha-?” Prompto blinked and searched his face for a joke. All he saw was a smile. Which didn’t mean Zack wasn’t joking, but there wasn’t any sign that he was either. ”Wait, hold up, we can’t fight them. They’re just doing their job! I don’t want to hurt anybody!”
Prompto tried to keep his voice down to an urgent whisper. He hoped the men outside didn’t notice.
”So. We should find another way, I guess.” He felt suddenly uncomfortable. The idea that he was taking shelter with a crazy man resurfaced, and he tried to shove it away again. He had no idea who Zack was or what he was about. He didn’t want to make assumptions either.
”They shouldn’t be there that long. Then we can sneak past. I think.” He hoped. ”Let’s just wait it out.”
At Prompto's reaction, Zack decided that when telling people how he ended up here, he should probably word it a little better. "Uh, yeah. It's a whole thing. To sum it all up a bit for the time being, I found out some secrets about the company I worked for, was kidnapped by an evil scientist and tested on for years. I escaped with my friend, but they found me anyways and went after me." Well, that sounded almost crazier than it actually was. "It sounds fake, but it's not. I can tell you more when we get out of here." Zack agreed.
If Prompto didn't really trust him before, then Zack had probably just made it a little worse. The guy seemed like a good guy, and someone fun to have around, so he really hoped they would get past this awkward first encounter and move on. In a way, he reminded Zack of Cloud, but more outspoken. Though, that could just be the blonde hair and the skeptical nature, but that was besides the point.
It was true, Zack had gone through so much training, that he didn't even notice that it was basically programmed into him at this point. He may be, well, a puppy, but he was still graceful when he moved. He was used to sneaking, so it was like second nature to him to move swiftly and gently wherever he went. He did make sure to make his steps just a bit softer in here, since it was a rather unstable building after all.
"Sorry about that, didn't mean to pull you that hard." Zack whispered. He had a habit of forgetting he was enhanced by mako, especially in a new world. The blonde was out of breath, but had kept up so Zack had to give him credit for that. He wondered what he did in his old world, figuring he would find out as soon as they were out of the rubble.
"Another way it is! That was my choice as well, just giving out other options." Zack wasn't one to choose to fight the innocent, though he had been given orders to do so, and had done so. This was a new world, so it was time to try to put his past behind him and move forward. Prompto's next idea was to wait it out. Quietly moving to a place a little farther from the hole, set the Buster Sword against a wall, and then sat against it. "It is getting darker, so they might be switching shifts."

[attr=class, bulk] Thankfully, Zack agreed and Prompto let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding. He was real glad that Zack didn’t want a fight. Then Prompto would have had to have done…something. He didn’t know what. Would he choose to stop him? Fight with him? Or just…leave? He was glad he didn’t have to find out.
Zack moved farther into their hiding place and set his huge sword beside him so he could sit. Prompto followed suit, plopping down carefully in a nook formed out of some jagged stone debris. He sat cross-legged, hands resting on his knees, drumming an anxious beat. He’d never liked sitting still. It was just one of those things he wasn’t good at.
There were a lot of things like that.
”It is getting darker so they might be switching shifts,” Zack said. Prompto frowned and looked out at what he could see of the sky.
He was right. The sun would be setting soon. Prompto felt something sink within him.
”Guess I ran out of time.” Prompto bit his lip. He couldn’t go out on his own at night. This wasn’t Eos. He wouldn’t be jumped by daemons probably, but it was always more dangerous out on the road at night, and he didn’t want to take any chances. Which meant he’d have to stay in Provo for the night which meant that he was wasting travel time to get to Sonora which meant-
Which meant…
”Man, I really screwed up.” He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. ”I uh. I have somewhere I’m supposed to be. I have to get to Sonora. Fast.”
He didn’t know how much of this would mean anything to someone who’d just landed around here and barely knew what Provo was. He didn’t know how much of it would make sense to someone who’d never heard of Eos, but he was already talking, and Prompto knew it was pointless to resist what he wanted to say.
Knowing his mouth, it’d all come out whether he wanted it to or not.
”I was with my friends before. And then…I woke up here. Alone. I tried to find them, but then I found out they’re in a lot of trouble. I’m headed to Sonora to try to find help. I hope I'm not too late.”
There was that despair, familiar and ready to eat him alive. He choked it back and shook his head. Nope. Not feeling it. Not today. Not right now.
”Heh. Sorry,” he said. ”Just…on the mind, you know?” He glanced at Zack, wondering again just where he came from and what his deal was. He was a real strange guy. That was for sure.
”So uh. Where are you headed? Is there anybody you’re trying to find?”
Zack watched as Prompto followed suit in sitting down, but the blonde seemed restless. Zack remembered when he was like that as well, not being able to sit for more than ten seconds without needing to get up and go do something. Being with SOLDIER had helped him overcome that, since he had to sit in waiting on multiple occasions. He still wasn't the best at it, but it had gotten a lot better over the years. He had to give a small smile at the blonde though, he was at least figuring out what to do to help occupy himself.
The next thing Prompto said made Zack tilt his head to the side. "Sonora, huh? Well, I don't know what you have there, but we can get there as quickly as we can once we get out of here. I can't remember where it is, but I'm sure you do if you're headed there?" That was typical Zack, offering help to a place he didn't even know where it was. Then again, he could know Sonora but didn't remember what the town was called. He was good at that too.
Prompto was then telling him about his experience with arriving to the place, and Zack could relate a little bit. He was alone when he got here and had to leave a friend behind. When he said he had to help his friends, Zack gave a nod. "Say no more, I'm always down to help people in need, even if it is just helping you get to the place you need to go before parting ways. Let me take a look out there."
Practically crawling, Zack made his way over to the edge of the hole in the wall and looked out. The guards were there, but they were at the corners of the building, a decent distance away from their location. "Perfect, time to boogie!" Giving Prompto a wave over, Zack grabbed the Buster Sword before jumping out of the hole in the wall and sprinting out of the building, hoping Prompto was behind him.
Once they were out, Zack stopped a moment to catch his breath a little. They hadn't gone far, but the adrenaline was kicking in too. As he calmed down, he remembered Prompto asked him a question. "From what I've heard, I've got some friends here. I'm not out actively looking, mainly because I'll get lost if I try that, but I'm keeping an eye for them. I figure I'll overhear a location or see them at some point, so it'll all work out!" Zack's optimism was clearly the only thing keeping him going these days, and he was okay with that.
[attr=class,lyric1]gonna keep on keeping on the only
[attr=class,lyric2]way i know how
[attr=class, bulk] Zack, it turned out, was a pretty good listener. Prompto still didn’t know how to feel about him, really, and he sure didn’t know if he trusted him but he wanted to and that was something. ”Heh.” Prompto rubbed his neck, glancing at him with a small smile as Zack offered to help him get to where he needed to go. ”You don’t have to. I mean, you’ve probably got other stuff you need to do, and it’s my problem really, but if you really wanted to, I mean…”
He didn’t know what he was saying, but he was also really sick of traveling alone. Would Zack be the best person to go with? Probably not, but boy oh boy was the road lonely without friends.
Zack decided to check if they could move yet, and Prompto nodded shifting onto the balls of his feet just in case. It really was cramped in their hiding hole. Cramped and dusty and gray. He wanted to move deep down in his soul, and he couldn’t help a grin as Zack called back to him that the coast was clear.
”Perfect, time to boogie!”
”Boogie?” Prompto snorted with laughter. ”I like it!”
Zack waved for him and then leapt out, dashing across the twilit yard, and Prompto glanced over at the distracted men to make sure they really were distracted before he followed suit. Zack was a beast tearing across the distance at a speed that Prompto could only barely keep up with, and he didn’t even seem out of breath. It reminded him of Gladio taking his morning runs across the beach. Except Zack didn’t turn around and call him weak once they’d finished their sprint and Prompto came stumbling to a halt behind him, hands on his knees as he tried to just breathe.
It seemed like they’d gotten away though. So mission success?
Zack told him a little about what he’d been doing, about his friends and how he wasn’t really pushing to find them. He seemed so genuinely optimistic, so completely carefree that Prompto was a little jealous. Prompto knew how to keep a smile on his face, sure, but he couldn’t help but worry. All the time. Particularly at a time like this.
Zack didn’t seem to have that problem. He was really cool that way. Strong and cool and confident. Prompto really did want to trust him.
”I’m sure you’ll find them!” Prompto said, perking up in an attempt to match the other man’s energy. ”I mean, I heard about mine when I wasn’t even really looking and they’re way out of the way. And I haven’t actually found them yet, but that’s something. Maybe you’ll just…walk into somebody one day? Depends on how much your friends stick out, I guess. And how many people you talk to.
”Maybe I’ve even seen one of them,” he went on. ”What do they look like? I’ve been around some places.”
When Prompto told Zack he didn't need to help, he shook his head. "To be honest, I don't really have much of anything to be doing. I don't really have a job, I just do random things here and there. I'm not tied down to anything currently so I'm wide open for adventures!" He was still living at the little inn Cissnei had shown him. There wasn't a reason not to, it was free living since he helped out a lot around the place. He had a good thing going for him, why mess with that?
Zack's new blonde friend, which he was starting to think would get confusing if he ever found Cloud again, seemed to like his cool word and he gave him a wink. Prompto kept up pretty well, and Zack had to admire that. He was pretty fast due to the mako in his system added in with his years with SOLDIER. You wouldn't really think so since he had a giant sword on his back, but it didn't slow him down at all.
So far, Zack was really enjoying hanging out with Prompto. The other man seemed a little on edge, but had a happy personality regardless. Zack didn't know much about him, so he could only assume that his past had something to do with it all, as it did with pretty much everyone. He himself had his upbringing to thank for the way he was. Gongaga was a community where everyone got along, helped each other out and looked to the brighter side of things. He knew things worked out in the end.
Chucking a little bit, Zack gave a nod. "Yeah, they'll stick out all right. One has long silver hair and an even longer sword. Another is built like a tank with long black hair, but has a heart of gold. There's one that doesn't really stick out appearance wise unless you count his crimson hair, but his way with words is inspiring and annoying at the same time. The last one I'm really looking for has spiky blonde hair you can probably see from miles away." He had already run into Aerith, though the meeting was brief, he was sure he'd see her again.
Looking around, Zack realized he really didn't know where they were. That wasn't surprising though. Rubbing the back of his head, he looked at his hopefully new friend. "Alright, it's your time to shine. Where are we headed now?" Traveling with someone who knew the area even just a little better than himself would definitely be a good thing. Maybe he would finally learn his way around!
[attr=class,lyric1]gonna keep on keeping on the only
[attr=class,lyric2]way i know how
[attr=class, bulk] Zack laughed at Prompto’s question. It was a fond kind of laugh, the kind when you thought of a friend. Which made sense. Since Prompto had asked him about his friends and all.
Prompto nodded, trying to commit it all to memory. Long silver hair and a big sword. Big guy, long black hair. Red hair and good at speeches. Then there was one who was blonde and liked hair gel. That last one kind of sounded like him come to think of it. Maybe they could talk about how to style the best spikes or something. Prompto hadn’t really found any products that really worked for him since he got here, but maybe Zack’s friend would…
Would…
There was that train of thought leaving the station again, no matter what he wanted. Prompto had the feeling he’d already forgotten half the people Zack had told him about and it hadn’t even been a full minute since he’d been told.
”Er, right! I’ll keep an eye out! Guess all I have to do is talk about you a lot and if they know you, they’ll just say so!” That was the best plan he had, anyway. There was no way he’d remember everything.
But then the conversation turned to where he was going and Prompto scuffed his shoe on the ground, not really sure how to answer. ”I’m, uh. Well I was headed to Sonora, but I think it might be too dark now. Where I’m from, daemons come out at night. Like real scary monsters. Anyway, I don’t like walking around outside a town at night if I can help it so I guess I was planning on heading out in the morning at this rate. I’ve got a little money. I’ll probably get a room if you wanna share.”
That sounded good. It was the least he could do if Zack was offering to come along. Sonora was not a great place to be headed.
It was, in fact, maybe the worst of all the places.
”Sonora’s real cold and real mean if you’ve never been. It’s about the last place I want to go, but I’ve got friends in trouble there. I think. So I’ve gotta try to help them, you know? So tomorrow, I’m headed to the border. Then I think you can take a train to the city then…I’ll figure something out, I guess. They don’t usually let people in the city so easy.”
Prompto rubbed his neck sheepishly. ”You still want to come along?”
"Thanks! Don't feel bad if you don't find them or end up not even remembering who they are. I'm sure they'll show up eventually if they're here." Zack had described his friends pretty quickly, and not really with too much detail, so he wouldn't be surprised if Prompto had forgotten soon. Though Sephiroth might be one that if Prompto saw him, he would remember that Zack was looking for him. The long silver hair stuck out like a sore thumb, and his sword didn't help much either.
Daemons? Well they sounded fun. "Monsters that only come out at night? Dang, that sounds crazy. We had a lot of monsters in my home world, but they came out whenever and wherever, they didn't care at all. I can stay with you if it's no trouble. I, uh, don't really know how to get back to where I was anyways, especially not in the dark. I'll go half with you on a room because I was gonna end up getting one anyways. Might as well make it cheaper for both of us!" Yeah, Zack ended up lost by coming here. No big deal.
Prompto was then explaining Sonora to him and Zack listened. What he was describing reminded him of when he had met Cloud. They were with two other SOLDIERs and Tseng, the Turk. Their helicopter had crashed and they had to finish the mission on foot. He and Cloud were used to mountains and the cold, so they were constantly ahead of everyone else. There hadn't been many monsters that came along that day, but there still wasn't a lot that Zack was scared of.
"I don't mind the cold, we had some rough winters where I grew up. Plus, I traveled all over so some places were freezing! As for mean, this baby can handle anything. I say bring it on." Patting the Buster Sword, he gave Prompto a reassuring smile. He wondered how much fighting the man had actually done in his life. He was a shooter, so if the two teamed up to go to Sonora, Zack could handle the close distance and Prompto the longer distance. It'd be perfect! "Do chickens lay eggs? Of course I do!"
[attr=class,lyric1]gonna keep on keeping on the only
[attr=class,lyric2]way i know how
[attr=class, bulk] Despite Prompto’s crazy proposal for a stranger no less, Zack didn’t seem any less enthused than…well, than when Prompto had seen him with anything before. ”Heh.” Prompto couldn’t help a smile back when Zack smiled his way. There was just something about him. It was like he’d done this a million times before even though they were both somewhere they’d never been, doing stuff neither of them could have ever dreamed of.
Or maybe it was only Prompto who couldn’t have dreamed of it. Maybe Zack just had a bigger imagination.
”Thanks, man. I mean it. We don’t even really know each other, but I hate going alone and…” That was more than he needed to know, wasn’t it? Prompto rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. ”Maybe we can try not to hurt anyone though? The guys there are mean, but they’re just doing their job, right? They’re still human.”
Not like the MTs. Prompto swallowed. There were a lot of thoughts that wanted to follow that thought. But he didn’t want to think those thoughts so he didn’t. They’d sneak up on him later anyway.
”Alright! I know a room around here. I stayed there when I was here last time, I think. I don’t know if I had the money to cover it myself anyway.” He tried for a stronger smile than last time and thought that he nailed it. He was pretty good at pretending nothing was wrong. He had a lot of practice in it.
”Just follow me!” he said as though he hadn’t gotten lost about a thousand times by now. But he was really starting to get it now. He thought. He hoped.
