[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto arrived too late for a decent spot in the competition. Being one of the last to sign up, she would not be able to participate until much later in the week. Not that she minded. It gave her time to watch the other builders as they went to their junk piles to find the perfect parts. How they used each tool to meticulously mend the joints together. And yet, even though they all had similar parts, each robot had something a little different about them. They had a strength and a weakness. Some held long range attacks, but were slow. Others were quick, but weak. [break][break] They all fascinated her. It made excited that she was working on one herself. She pushed through the crowd into the makeshift bleachers to look down into the arena. A chain link net was installed to keep the viewers safe from any shrapnel or flying robots. Her tail swayed contentedly, but she realized there was not much room for it on the benches. She let it fall over her lap as she watched with much interest. [break][break]
Below they let one person into each side of an arena behind a screen. Sliding doors let in each of the opponent’s robots. One was a domed shaped robot - almost like a sloped manta-ray. It was meant to ram into the opponent's robot, then use it’s back arm to stab like a scorpion. The second robot was smaller and zipped much quicker. It had a steam roller front with grooves. The grooves were meant to block, catch, and steam roll items in front of it. [break][break] Both robots were simple. Mikoto could do better. She knew she could. Still she waited for the battle to begin. On the edges of the arena were ‘rogue robots’ meant to be obstacles when the fight went too long. The terrain could also shift as necessary. The announcer came over the loud speaker. “LEEEET’S GET READY TOOOOO ROOOOBOOOOOOO RUUUUMBLEEEE!” [break][break] Then a referee stood up on a podium. He introduced the robots as MAD MAX and the Stinging DEATH. “THREEEEE…TWOOOO…OOOOOONE. FIGHT-OOO!” [break][break] The gears whirred and the battle began.

TEACH THEM BOYS A LESSON
Cindy Aurum could fit in just about anywhere, as long as it had machines she could work on. She had found herself in Zephon about a month or so ago, and as much as she missed her Paw-Paw, she knew he would carry on without her. The old man was too stubborn to dwell on things for too long, and would push forward. She missed him, but she too needed to just keep on with her life. So, she had found herself a job at a local mechanics shop, working on anything and everything that came her way.
Today, she had gotten the day off, and knew exactly where she wanted to go. News had come across her ears about some robots fightin', and thats where she wanted to be. Kahiko Valley wasn't too terribly far away, so the journey wasn't a long one, especially compared to the ones she had in the past. She hoped it would be worth it. If she got there and the competition was dull, she would not be happy.
Arriving a little into the first fight, she paid her way and made it inside. It was pretty packed inside, but she found a seat next to a girl with a tail in her lap. It didn't bother her one bit though and she gave the girl a smile. "Seems to be a slow start, dontcha think?" She wasn't really sure if the girl would listen to her, but it would be rude to plop herself right next to someone and not say anything. At least, to her it was. If the girl didn't want to talk, she would respect that as well.
Cindy wished she could have entered into the competiton, but by the time she had heard about it, it was too late to even try to start building something, even with her expertise. The two that were starting the fight weren't the worst contraptions she had ever seen, but there were some things she would fix up. The tail like weapon was a little to chunky, and there was a chance it wouldn't move fast enough to strike. While the other was a little to simple for her taste, very little imagination.
[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto watched as the robots weaved in and out of each other’s paths. The smaller robot with the steamroller - Mad Max - was much quicker than the larger one with the scorpion-like tail - the Stinging Death. [break][break] Tak, tak, tak. [break][break] Mad Max dodged the quick stabs with ease. Then Max stayed just out of striking range of the Stinging Death. It was biding it’s time as it swerved and circled…waiting for the most opportune time to… [break][break] There! It struck! [break][break] Right before the Stinging Death could pull up its tail, Max rammed it’s steam grooved steam roller into it. There was a loud clamor that ensued. Metal against grinding gear. [break][break] Stinging Death lost its sting. [break][break] The crowd roared and the narrator hyped them up further with his excitement. [break][break] Mikoto perked up at the sight. It was then that a blond woman sat next to her. The genome almost didn’t hear what she said over the crowd’s next cheers for the small Mad Max that was one ramming the now defenseless robot. [break][break] “Slow?” She thought about what Cindy meant. “They talk a lot before the fight.” She agreed with Cindy. She tore her eyes from the fighting robots to look up at Cindy. The other woman also seemed highly interested in the fighting robot. Mikoto was fine sitting back into silence after that. She had not really engaged in many conversations. It was much easier to keep to oneself. But the subject matter left Mikoto to learn more about it. [break][break] “They are small and inefficient.” She scrunched her brow. “Do they create bigger? Classify fights by size?” She was still trying to make sure she was on track to building her own robot for fighting. “Not autonomous…” They had controllers that probably used some frequency to move them. Mikoto wanted something bigger, durable, and able to process on its own. Perhaps they were saving those robots for later.

TEACH THEM BOYS A LESSON
It seemed that Cindy had spoken too soon. A few moments after she had stated they were off to a slow start, the sweet sound of metal filled the arena and Cindy shivered with excitement. The noise was like a song to her, and she was glad she came. The contraptions were going at it better than she thought they would, and this was only the beginning. She hoped that it would just get bigger and better from here, but she could tell she was going to be satisfied with this event.
"That they do. I just wanna see some action!" Cindy almost pumped her fist in the air, but decided against it. She didn't wanna come off too strong just yet. Cindy had suggested something like this to Paw-Paw once, but he shot her idea down. He had a point, parts were already hard to come by where they were from, so they weren't to be wasted. She had been okay with it. They had been one of the only repair shops around the Crown City, so they had enough on their hands as it was.
As if the other girl had been reading her thoughts, Cindy gave a nod. "They really are. The ideas are far too simple, but for a starting battle, I guess it makes sense." You don't want to start out big because then the excitement ends up dying down and you lose the attention of the crowd. Start out slow and steady, and then really get them going on the end. Always leave them wanting more.
"I would certainly hope so. If all the fights end up like this, not many will want to come back again." To be fair, she might. This was the only thing that had really caught her eye since she had been here, so until something else came around, this was what she would look forward to. "The people who made them are actin' like they're little kids drivin' toy cars around. I sure hope there's contraptions that have some real thought into 'em."

Mikoto has reverted back to quiet disappointment. Cindy Aurum
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] The woman next to her was vibrating. Was she ill? Or rather, Cindy’s contentment seemed to boil over. Either way, Mikoto found herself interested that the woman who agreed the ideas were too simple. “Why does simple for starting battles make sense?” She asked with genuine curiosity. To her, the quicker something was resolved, the less trouble it could cause. [break][break] Then again, that was only if she could not first remove herself from the situation. [break][break] Mikoto lapsed into silence again, as she turned to watch the fight. [break][break] Mad Max seemed to be corralling the Sting into a marked off part of the arena. It caused one of the sentinel robots on the side lines to whir awake. The metal screeched as the sentinel robot reached out both its clamping hands to grab the Sting. There was a loud screeching of metal against metal. [break][break] “Oh no, folks! The Sting has been snatched by the Death Machine! Can it escape before it is annihilated?!” [break][break] There was a roar from the crowd to punctuate the excitement. The team trying to get their robot released from the Death Machine could be seen frantically moving their joystick and mashing their controls in furious attempt to free their robo champion. [break][break] But the Death Machine’s propellers spun and, much like a helicopter, lifted itself and it’s victim into the air. Then, at the appropriate height it dropped the Sting. Suddenly, there was a flicker of red in its eye and a beam slammed into the Sting before it could even land on the ground. [break][break] When the Sting finally did crash into the ground, it was then smoldering from the attack. It sparked from the electrical circuitry. There was another cheer from the crowd and the announcer shouted the winner of the watch into the mike. [break][break] Mikoto seemed unimpressed even though she watched curiously. It seemed foolish to only have one method of offense and no defense in these games. The weaker lost. “Are you entered to compete?” Mikoto asked, trying to gauge the person next to her.

TEACH THEM BOYS A LESSON
At the question, Cindy turned to the other girl. "Well, if ya start out with the big ones with all the action, the ones after that don't seem as excitin'." Cindy explained with a smile. "It's like, when you're tellin' a story. If you tell it with then endin' first, how they got there doesn't seem all that interestin'." Hopefully she explained it well enough. She did know people that read the ending and still liked how they got to that point, so she may have used a bad example.
Looking back into the arena, it seemed as though there was some excitement happening. As the Sting made its way to the sidelines, she thought it might end up causing some problems. What ended up happening was another robot was woken up and captured the Sting. This was going to prove just how tough the little guy was. She watched as the operators of the Sting were starting to freak out a little bit. They didn't seem to have a plan for this, and Cindy sat back. It looked like this match was over.
The ending wasn't too bad, but lasers weren't really Cindy's thing. It was a show though, and the blonde still clapped when the winner was announced. Hopefully the next match was a little more exciting. The girl was asking her a question and Cindy turned her attention to her. "Unfortunately no. I haven't been here very long, and heard about the event much too late to even get anything started. Maybe next time though. How about yourself?"
Cindy looked over the arena as the announcer stated it would be about five minutes before the next match started, as they had to clear the Sting from the arena and get the next match ready to go. Looking back over at the girl, Cindy offered her hand. "Name's Cindy. Pleasure to be watchin' with ya." It was nice to sit by someone who seemed to have an actual interest in this, and wasn't here just to watch machines hit machines.
[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto looked up at Cindy, still not quite understanding. Some plays started out exciting and they seemed to be entertaining enough with more bursts of excitement. Was this type of show different. She said nothing and glared at the outcome of the robot battle. It seemed here they clapped for the strongest - the one that tore apart the other to win. The stage hands were now cleaning up the arena for the next match. There would be a twenty minute intermission as they prepared. For the next act. [break][break] The crowd restlessly got up to stretch their legs, get refreshments, and use the restroom. The people around pushed past her and Mikoto scrunched uncomfortably away. Being around so many people without her predecessor nearby was beginning to feel uncomfortable. He always seemed to know what to do among the people here. It would have been nice to build with him and get his input. [break][break] Mikoto turned back to Cindy, “I am building my own.” She started and looked down as she thought. She fiddled with her tail ribbon just to give her hands something to do. “I was hoping watching would give me ideas.” She said simply as she began thinking about the robot she was putting together. When Cindy introduced herself, the young genome simply said “Mikoto.” as if expending thoughts on an introduction was an effort she could not waste. [break][break] “It’s wrist mechanism in the TRL configuration does not perform smooth movement yet. The weight load tests on the effectors show some damage with heavy payloads.” Something she did not want if it was to pick up an opponent. “Do you have suggestions?” She asked, looking up at Cindy and her head falling to the side. Her tail left her lap and stretched itself before curving interestedly behind her.

TEACH THEM BOYS A LESSON
As people got up to move around, they would all bump into each other, and she noticed the other girl seemed put off by the whole thing. "Hey watch it, or you'll my boot up your ass!" The person who had gotten a little too close to them didn't seem to expect them to say anything and jumped a bit before scurrying off. They probably didn't mean to, but people had ways of being disrespectful. Cindy was used to crowded areas, so this wasn't anything new to her. She kept on eye on the girl next to her though, just in case.
Giving a nod, she listened to the girl who was now messing with a ribbon on her tail. "Then I really hope that this thing picks up a little, or you won't have many ideas to go off of." If the whole thing was like the first match, then she was going to have some words with the people putting on the event, that was for sure. She wished her Pee-Paw was here as well, he'd really give them a piece of his mind.
"Nice to meet ya Mikoto." Cindy said with a smile. Meeting new people came naturally to Cindy, she did run a mechanic shop with her grandfather after all. She had to have conversation skills or they might not have had as many customers. Though, she had heard that some people just came to see her, and not want anything done to their car, or very little. She was still confused about that.
The next thing Cindy knew, the girl was saying more in one go than she had the entire time they had been there! Or, well it seemed so. Cindy had to give some thought about the question. She knew her way around cars well enough, but the main mechanics around robots was a little trickier. "Well, first ya gotta make sure everything is tightened. Is there enough support in place for it?" They were simple things, but Cindy once spent too much time helping someone fix something that just ended up not being plugged in.

She has decided Cindy is right. She would be disappointed watching and she should work on her problem instead. Cindy Aurum
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto jumped too as Cindy told the person off. Was that the proper response to being overly crowded? Should Mikoto be putting boots in people’s asses? That seemed an inconvenient way to lose one’s boot. Mikoto liked her boots enough to not lose them. But the threat was enough to scare the person off. Perhaps, there was a connotation she did not understand. [break][break] Teal eyes curiously watched as the arena was being cleaned for the next group. Sweeper bots ran brushes to push parts into the edge of the arena, where the floor had slid back. They clattered inthere with loud metal ringing. Then new sweeper bots came out with floor buffs to rewax the floors. [break][break] Cindy took a long moment to consider Mikoto’s question. Mikoto listened curiously and, in return, considered Cindy’s suggestions. Tighten everything up and make sure it’s supported? “Yes. I have. I don’t want it too tight or it won’t turn.” She contemplated it. Maybe it didn’t need a wrist. Maybe she should just replace the whole thing. And perhaps, Cindy was right. If the young genome stayed to watch she would be disappointed. It would be better to just go back and work on her solution. The time to go was now before the place got recrowded. [break][break] She stood up and felt the ache in her legs from sitting to hard. Her eyes turned back to Cindy. “I will return to work.” She said, which was as much of a goodbye that the genome could muster. She was getting better at this socializing thing. She talked to a stranger and now she gave a closing remark. Her tail swished behind her as she lightly stepped over discarded snacks and cups. Humans sure were messy.
