Death Trap wants an upgrade? Deathtrap gets an upgrade! Yuffie Kisaragi @hojo
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Huddled in a back alley, with stacks of abandoned boxes - their fort - Yuffie had shown her a flyer to the event that was at a place far from here. In fact, she never heard of this Kahiko Valley or this Keleawe Village. The flyer had two boxy robots with fists bared at each other. “Robo Rumble” they called it. Spectators were welcomed to watch the scavengers display their engineering skills. Those who were interested in displaying their own skills could only use the parts scavenged in Kahiko Valley. There were airships that were now frequently departing to go to Kahiko Valley for those interested in attending the event. [break][break] Mikoto did not understand much of Great Ninja Yuffie’s excited babble. What she did understand was that Yuffie was interested in the prize. Mikoto was not sure what the prize was worth, but perhaps when she arrived it would become more clear. However, it was not what drew the young genome’s attention. It was the fact that she could build something. She could watch how people built robots and try it for herself. Moreover, there seemed to be an implication that she could scavenge parts in Kahiko Valley without cost. [break][break] So, Mikoto found the nearest airship and boarded with the help of Great Ninja Yuffie. She did not ask, nor care, where the tickets came from. Instead, she stood near the railings of the airship and watched the world beneath it with great interest. It seemed so small from up here in the sky. And the valley seemed but a large gash rendered in the earth with the vein of sparkling water through it. It was green with vegetation and grey with ruins. Her tail swished interestedly as she could see as they were already nearing a small landing dock just outside the village. [break][break] One of the ship’s travel guides began to raise a hand to rally people to the exit, just as they were about to dock.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
"Oh my god, I think I'm dying!" Yuffie managed to cough out between vomitting fits in the cramped bathroom on the crummy airship. Wow, she should have guessed that airships were even SUCKIER in the past. Which meant her airsickness was EVEN WORSE. Maybe she should have bought some tranquilisers or something before heading out. She could have sent Mikoto to get some but the girl had disappeared, and frankly, Yuffie preferred to be left alone to suffer in silence, where she sat hunched over the toilet, throwing her guts up. Of course, she usually found it easier to stay standing, in that if she could stay standing and just rest against a wall or something, she could just about cope, but that worked on trains, if she was lucky. Airships were another story. She tried to remember the advice Cloud had given her on the Highwind.
Be nervous? Well, that didn't work. Yuffie was WAY too badass to get nervous. Read? Reading was for dorks! Plus she hadn't brought any books. Move around a lot? Okay, she could do that, maybe she should-
As soon as she went to move she lurched back to the toilet, throwing up. Okay, eugh, maybe, not move. Maybe she'd just die in the restroom. They'd find her corpse and wonder how they let such an awesome ninja die. That'd shown them for abandoning her! (Who 'they' were, at this point, was unclear).
Just as she was certain she was going to throw up her own stomach and therefore die and that'd teach Mikoto for leaving her all alone, she noticed that the ship seemed to have come to a stop. That was probably why her sickness had gotten even worse. The airship had been landing. Landings were the WORSE.
Yuffie staggered out of the restroom, looking pale and clammy, and made her way towards the exit, where she spotted Mikoto. "Uuuuugh, I hate flying...." she groaned. "Don't laugh. It's not funny," she said quickly before Mikoto would have a chance to mock her, because of course she assumed people would. "I knew I shouldn't have eaten all that candy back at the dock when we were leaving..." She added with another groan, holding her stomach, obviously still feeling queasy.
She began to stagger down the ramp, to the ground. "Oh, solid ground, I could kiss you..." she said, managing a slightly hurried rush down the ramp. "Ugh. Okay. Operation: Kick Robot Butt is ready to begin," she announced to Mikoto after a moment, before she collapsed back onto the ground, laying with her arms and legs starfished out. "I'm just, gonna lay here for a minute first..." she added. "If the ground could stop spinning, that would be great."
[attr=class,bulk] Yuffie gave Mikoto complaints about flying and her well-being. “You will recover soon.” Humans seemed to think every bodily inconvenience meant they were dying. But, she supposed they needed to be acutely aware of themselves in order to survive their eighty or so years. What had made her sick? Was it the motion of the airship? Mikoto held no fear of heights. In fact, being high up above everything put her at ease. [break][break] Mikoto offered Yuffie no reprieve. Eagerly, she got in line to exit the airship. This world was much bigger than she thought. She seemed to have only seen much of its wilderness and two cities. She thought it was hard to imagine people living in nothing but sand. But to imagine humans could adapt to living in a gash in the earth… [break][break] And they had technical skills…Her tail swished excitedly. She was eager to learn. [break][break] One moment she saw Yuffie, then another moment she was gone. Mikoto looked side to side before finally gazing down to find Yuffie lying on the ground just outside the airship. Oh. Mikoto went to Yuffie’s side and just remained standing as she looked down. “Will you build, too? It doubles the chance.” Mikoto had some experience in building. She had to come up with inventions to protect Black Mage Village, as well as make the life more convenient for the others. Technology came easy to her thanks to her experiences on Terra and the predisposed genetics to productively build and work. [break][break] It was almost as simple as breathing. [break][break] She was excited to put some of her knowledge to the test. However, they seemed to be in some sort of gathering hub of people leaving and going. There were stairs that led down and out into the valley. “Should I go ahead and find more information?” There was a flyer for the event. Surely there was someone overseeing it somewhere close. [break][break] “The ground is stationary.” She said offhandedly, as she looked up towards the exit. Why did Yuffie think it was spinning? She supposed it technically was based on planetary rotation. But usually that was not an inconvenience in standing up.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Mikoto made for a good minion. Some might even consider promoting her to peon. But in the whole 'friendship' thing? She still had a lot to learn! Now, some might say that Yuffie herself didn't really make the best FRIEND, but who cared about THOSE people? "Aw, c'mon, you could be a little sympathetic," she pouted from where she lay on the floor. "You're meant to be my friend!" In fact, Mikoto was probably the only friend that Yuffie had made in Zephron. Which, okay, COULD be Yuffie's fault for sabotaging nearly every person she met. But Mikoto didn't really ask questions, and went along with whatever Yuffie was doing, and that was fun. It was fun having somebody to share in adventures with without having to raise too many questions. "No! Don't leave me! I might be dying!" Yuffie groaned when Mikoto suggested heading off on her own.
Slowly, she managed to get to her feet, although she still groaned, queasily. She made a face, and stuck her tongue out a bit, as if trying to shake the taste of sick from the back of her throat. "I dunno squat about building robots. So unless the plan is I build like, a robot suit and go inside it and then HA! NINJA! all the robots, I dunno if I can help building one," Yuffie admitted. And then she paused. "Saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay, that's a good idea! I'm a total kickass ninja and I've wrecked more robots than most people have had breakfasts! I could be really good as a stealth robot butt kicker!" She threw a few imaginary punches at even more imaginary robots, and then paused, because the rapid movement brought her queasiness back and caused her stomach to wretch. She covered her mouth for a moment, and groaned.
"Uh, we'll call that, Plan B (for 'But Still Awesome')," she decided, not feeling up to fighting herself. "Anyway, you tell me what to get, and I'll get the parts! And then you can build 'em! And we can win together! Whaddya think?" Yuffie grinned at the plan. Maybe this would be fun after all!

[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] “Sympathetic?” Her brow furrowed. That required her to understand feelings - not just her own but those of an alien race. “Sympathy is part of friendship?” This friendship was going to be much harder than she anticipated then. She had tried on several occasions to show empathy with Kuja only to typically be met by anger or dismissal. It seemed she could not do it right with a Terran, how could she expect to with a Gaian? “It…is not easy for me.” [break][break] She lowered her eyes to an uninteresting spot on the ground, not really interested in that task being a priority at the moment. Nor did she want to talk about her story. [break][break] She was about to leave on her task when Yuffie suddenly sprung to life, despite her sudden illness. At least enough so to tell Mikoto to stay by her side. Mikoto stood and watched as Yuffie stood back up on her feet. She offered her no assistance. See. Great Ninja Yuffie could get up and move just fine. “You are not a robot.” She shook her head at Yuffie’s idea of a robot suit for herself. “Depending on parts availability, it may be possible.” She conceded. Maybe if she had time, Yuffie could have a robot suit. [break][break] Her ally may not be able to build a robot, but, “You can aid me in studying the competition.” Mikoto offered. Yuffie wanted the prize, so it seemed to make sense she would be part of the process somehow. Then Mikoto seemed to have a spark of interest in Yuffie’s exaggerations, “How did you manage to wreck so many robots?” Maybe she could leverage it into her own design. Then another question, “Why do you need a robot power suit if you can do so already?” [break][break] Then, Mikoto nodded at Yuffie’s other suggestion of gathering parts for her. “Yes. That would help me build.” [break][break] With that Yuffie turned to wade through the crowd and out into the stairway leading down into the valley. The air was like a burst of fresh wind. Then, when one looked down, it was a dizzying deep distance to where the village was. Mikoto had no issue looking down on it. It was quite interesting to see how small it was. “What is the prize?” Mikoto simply wanted to know what sparked Yuffie’s desire to come if she did not build.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Okay, so it seemed Mikoto really DID struggle with friendship. Aw, that was kinda sad. But Yuffie could relate. Before she'd met AVALANCHE, she'd struggled keeping friends. PROPER friends, anyway. Probably because she was always annoying 'em or stealing from 'em or they were scared of saying the wrong thing around her because she was Godo's daughter. Mikoto was a good friend. She was fun to be around and always went along with whatever Yuffie wanted to do. So she appreciated that. But it seemed the girl didn't quite fully understand herself. "Sure it is!" Yuffie replied, trying to encourage her. "'cause when your friends are happy, you're happy. If your friends are sick, then you're gonna have less fun. This whole robot fighting thing will be WAY less fun if you were on your own and I was just, like, chucking up in the corner!" Yuffie explained. She didn't debate the question IF it would be more fun with her there. It was obvious. Of COURSE it would be. "So, you gotta be sympathetic when I'm sick," she finished. Perfect logic! Even Mikoto couldn't argue with that.
"Buuuut how do you know?" Yuffie asked when Mikoto insisted she wasn't a robot. "Maybe I'm a super advanced cyborg from the future that just LOOKS like a super cute ninja girl, huh?" she suggested with a grin. "Anyway, that's not the point. We just gotta convince everybody ELSE I'm a robot. Then I can smash 'em up without a problem. Honestly, you should see some of the robots I've fought. One was like a giant worm. One was a fancy lady riding like, a weird mech thing. It was super strange."
"Ah, robots aren't so hard to beat once you get used to 'em," Yuffie shrugged. "Shinra used 'em all the time. Just throw a bit of Bolt, maybe summon Ramuh if you're feeling fancy, bash 'em a few times, and most robots fall apart." She spoke with the air of an expert, as if she was somebody who had seen far too many killer robots in her time. And for once, she wasn't really lying. "Buuut, there are some you gotta watch out for. The Weapons, for example. I don't even know what they are. They're like some kinda crazy SUPER GIANT robot things that lived inside the planet or something and wanted to punch the meteor but couldn't so just smashed up stuff instead." It was possible, of course, that Yuffie was not that good at explaining things. "I've fought some of those and they are SUPER tough. Especially the weird one that lived underwater. Never fight a robot underwater. It's super hard," she went on.
"I don't NEED a robot power suit to smash up robots. Although, that'd be kinda cool! Like, a mecha-Yuffie!" She held out her hand, and made a 'za-pow!' sound effect, to imagine firing a blaster. "But they won't let me enter the competition as a human. So we'd have to trick 'em into thinking I was a robot," she explained.
"Yep! You can't build without parts. And I'm the BEST at finding parts. Especially parts that other people might have found first. Wink wink." Yes, she said 'wink wink'. She was getting excited and kind of forgot you were meant to actually DO that bit.

So it begins. Sign-ups, part scavenging, building... Yuffie Kisaragi
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto absorbed what Yuffie told her. She supposed there was some truth to it. She certainly agreed that being with a healthy Kuja was a better experience than hanging out with a Kuja she thought was dying. The only way it seemed to solve that was to try to REMOVE this Hilda human causing his illness. [break][break] Similarly, an immobile Great Ninja Yuffie was a useless aid to the competition. Nothing but a distraction from the mission. She quietly considered this sympathy. Did that mean she had to take care of her? Or simply be patient and carry on as she gets better. [break][break]
Regardless, Yuffie seemed fine now. No need to search for an antidote. [break][break]
Mikoto just dead panned and stared at Yuffie as she claimed she was an advanced cyborg. It simply was not possible. No matter how advanced the technology there was always tells. “My home was advanced in such technology. You are not a cyborg.” Garland was a cyborg. Most of Terran artificial intelligence had more sense than the humans here. And a cyborg generally did not care if it was part robot enough to brag about it. [break][break]
Then again, Mikoto wondered if she should do some tests just to make sure. Surely she had detachable limbs if there were some kernel of truth to it. However, Mikoto could not detect the scent of surgical steel, wisps of immortal souls, or the electrical ozone. “It will be difficult to convince anyone that you are something, you are not.” She tilted her head, unsure why Yuffie wanted to be the robot instead of build one in the first place. “Was it pleasant for you to fight them?” She asked, trying to understand Yuffie’s reasoning for wanting to fight more robots. [break][break]
Though a lady riding a mech…This gave Mikoto thoughts. “Right. Make the robot resistant to lightning and blunt force.” Perhaps have a chassis that draws electricity away from sensitive circuitry. Some thick panels for the front. But Yuffie kept talking about giant robots coming out of the planet and being difficult to defeat. That would not help in their current situation. But it was interesting. Was there a colony of surviving Terrans on her planet too? [break][break]
The wind blew and the sound of a larger crowd touched Mikoto’s ears as they neared the end of the stairs leading down into the valley. Mikoto looked this way and that. Then there was a sign nailed high above the people on a post. “Robo Rumble Reception.” Mikoto pushed through the crowd to get to the booth. There were many lines and Mikoto felt like the shortest one would be the best. Needless to say it was the line for the heavier build robot competition. [break][break]
Mikoto stood in line and felt it was unnecessary they both stand there. It would be more productive if someone looked where the building materials were. “Can you scout where there might be parts for use.” Maybe they needed to officially scavenged the valley? “If not, then where do most go for parts? Unless you are taking from those that have them...” Or if Yuffie wanted to see what the competition already looked like…

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Wait, Mikoto came from a world that had cyborgs? That didn't seem like Mikoto. She seemed innocent, in a weird, might-be-evil kind of way. It was hard to imagine that she came from a world full of technology. Especially technology like cyborgs. Truth be told, it made Yuffie just the tiniest bit weary. She never quite fully trusted technology. She had seen what Shinra could get up too. Even if her overriding thought was that a planet of cyborgs sounded cool. "Yeah, but they don't know that," Yuffie teased back.
"Nah, you just gotta lie. Tricking people to think you're something you're not is totally the way of the ninja. Did I ever tell you about how I first met the guys who I helped save the world?" she paused. "Uh, I mean, who helped ME save the world," she added quickly. She paused for a moment, feeling a little guilty about that. Her stomach knotted and she wondered if it was shame or left over travel sickness, but she decided to move on anyway.
"Smashing Shinra robots was the best!!" She beamed when Mikoto asked her if she enjoyed destroying robots. "Look, your world might be all cyborgs n' stuff, but my home, Wutai, we weren't like that at all. We trained all our lives to be the best ninjas. We valued skill, and we looked up to Leviathan, our God, and we believed in TRADITIONS like honour and... and... ninjitsu! And stuff!" she explained, her eyes lighting up a little as she talked about the Wutai of old. "And then Shinra invaded! When I was a little girl, Shinra attacked us. Not 'cause we were a threat to them, but because they were jerks." Or they wanted Mako or something. Who cared? Jerks summed it up. "And they DIDN'T value skill or honour or combat. They DIDN'T train from birth to be kickass ninjas. All they did was build robots and inject their soldiers with science to make them stronger. They came at us with machines and guns and technology in the thousands they took everything that Wutai was meant to be away." Yuffie actually looked serious for a moment. "So every time I smashed one of those robots, I was smashing back at the things that destroyed my homeland. So heck yeah, it was pleasant for me to trash them!" she said with enthusiasm. "Not that that stopped Shinra. The things I saw them do. They dropped an entire plate on their own people. They killed thousands, and I still don't really understand why. And they made bad guys like Nero and Sephiroth, who killed my friends. They were the worse." She added, her voice wavering for a moment as she thought of Sonon and Aerith.
"Yep! And ... and you should give it like.... LASER EYES! Or something!" Yuffie didn't know much about designing robots, but she decided to offer her input.
She followed Mikoto as they pushed through the crowd. Yuffie trailed behind a little as she checked a few pockets for materia, but didn't find any. Look, old habits died hard, okay? And then she caught up with Mikoto asking about scouting for parts. "Uh, I dunno. Usually if I had to find robot parts I'd smash up a robot and go 'ha, now you're parts'," Yuffie replied with a grin. "But I can scout around! I'm a NINJA! I'm super good at scouting and stealth and I'm SURE I can find some parts around here!" she said confidently. And then she paused. "Uh, one question. What do robot parts look like?" she asked with a slightly embarrassed laugh.
[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto did not understand why it was necessary to trick people unless there was a need for survival. Like Kuja hiding his tail. But it seemed Yuffie moved on to how she met someone. Mikoto was unable to see how the two were related. Did she trick this other person? “You have not told me about this ‘guy’.” She shook her head no and stared at Yuffie. [break][break] Mikoto listened curiously as Yuffie talked about her homes. “Leviathan?” It sounded similar to how the Gaians lived. “Were you in a ninja tribe of summoners?” Isn’t that what she was told by Garland? They were waiting to bide their time until summoners could be rendered useless or their eidolons used. Mikoto continued to listen to Yuffie, but she found it hard to understand honor, “Shinra fought without wanting resources? What does honor have to do with fighting?” [break][break] What was honor anyway? [break][break] Mikoto decided it was best to just listen. She did not understand why Shinra tactics were so bad. Machines, science, and engineered persons - weren’t those also Terran tactics? Though Terrans learned their lesson early that direct assaults were not the best. If the Great Ninja wanted to stop Shinra to survive, then she should stop being unproductive and have better combat tactics. She looked up the sky. It seemed so far when one had to look between valley walls. [break][break] Nero… [break][break] He did not seem so bad to her. He helped her understand her brother a little more. However, Mikoto could not be surprised that Yuffie called him ‘bad’ if he killed those she liked. Mikoto also felt something hot and sharp when talking to him. Nero knew something about Kuja she didn't. The feeling bothered her. [break][break] What could Mikoto say? She just listened. It was hard to understand why Yuffie appeared to be upsetting herself. Maybe she just needed Mikoto to hear her out. [break][break] But just as Mikoto thought Yuffie’s eyes were about to leak saline, the ninjette seemed to change her emotions again to excitement. [break][break] Mikoto’s brow creased. For her to be sympathetic, she had to understand right? To some extent, she understood Kuja, until he had his sudden mood shifts like this one. It was too hard for her to know what to do. [break][break] “Laser eyes…” Mikoto said thoughtfully. Though her tail swished curiously. How did one describe robot parts? Mikoto started to describe the parts in name, but it came out in Terran - soft and melodic. When she realized what she was doing, her tail swished to show her annoyance at herself. Her face crinkled in concentration as she awkwardly began to make shapes with her hands. “Like this…” She began to make crab claws with her hand for robot hand clamps. She faced two fingers down for diodes. Then she interlaced her fingers in front of her and drew like a wall for the chassis… [break][break] But she soon realized this was becoming difficult to gesture. Looking to and fro for help, she visibly perked up as she saw a paper trampled in the dirt. It seemed to be a cheat sheet with a picture of the part and some words with it. She simply pointed at it to Yuffie.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie paused for a moment when Mikoto pointed out that Yuffie hadn't told her about the 'guy' from back home. That meant telling her about how Yuffie had helped save the world! But that also meant reconfiguring the story so that Yuffie didn't sound like a TOTAL bitch. So, uh, bit of a thinking and- "Oh, well, right, back home, Shinra, those are the bad guys, had like, TOTALLY conquered Wutai, my home. And I was all ready to go kick their butts! But my Dad was like 'no, Yuffie, stay home and do your chores'. Which is TOTALLY lame, by the way. I mean, what's the point in being the boss's daughter if you've still gotta do chores? ANYWAY, so I was like, 'uh, screw THAT', and decided to head out into the world with a PLAN! See, in MY world, there's this thing called materia. And it's the BEST! It's like a magical rock and if you have one you can do super awesome magic. And I figured, if I gathered enough materia, I could use it to KICK SHINRA'S BUTT and make 'em leave Wutai. But it's kinda really hard to find, so I thought that I'd find a bunch of gullible saps who had already collected the materia, then pretend to be their friend, team up with 'em, lead 'em back to Wutai, and then steal their materia and use it to free Wutai!" She exclaimed, her fists clenched as if this was her best plan ever. "Anyway, the guys I teamed up with were total babies about it and cried and stuff and begged me to keep adventuring with 'em anyway, which since we were saving the world, I thought I'd better do it, so I carried on working with them even though I totally coulda stolen their materia and kept it and they didn't catch me when I tried or anything," she finished.
Were they a ninja tribe of summoners, Mikoto asked. Well, THAT sounded awesome. Of course, there was only one answer; "Yes. Yes we were," Yuffie answered with a grin. Technically, for once, it wasn't a lie. She COULD summon and she WAS a ninja, so it was kinda true. "But I don't have any of my summoning materia. Cloud didn't equip me with any before I ended up here," she said with a sigh, before pausing. "Uh, not that Cloud was in charge. Obviously, I was in charge. But, sometimes, I let Cloud be in charge of equipment, just to make his spikey little head feel better about me being so much more badass than him," Yuffie quickly explained.
Yuffie gave Mikoto another look when she asked about honour. "Honour is the most important thing in fighting! We train all our lives to be the ultimate badasses! We learn every skill and to fight and kick butt, and then Shinra just make machines and inject themselves with weird science-y junk and think it's the same! It's cheating! Real warriors EARN their warrior....er...ness." Yuffie answered.
She watched as Mikoto tried to make a robot part with her hands, which Yuffie thought was an entirely reasonable approach, but Mikoto seemed to be struggling with it. Then she pointed something out on the floor. "That's a piece of paper. Even I know you can't build a robot out of paper!" Yuffie replied, and then she paused, and looked back at it. "OH you mean what's on the paper. I knew that," she said quickly, scooping down and picking it up. "Okay! Say no more! I can find these parts and bring 'em back! Then we're gonna have the most KICKASS robot in the whole world! And we can call it... the YUFFOMINATOR!" she grinned.
