The last month or so had been a bit of a blur for Zack. Cissnei had found him a place to stay for the time being, and he had been pretty busy between working for the landlady and also taking random jobs from the board Cissnei mentioned. To be fair, he probably had enough to get into an apartment, but he wanted to save up the money to pay Cissnei back as well, so he decided to stick around. The landlady was pretty happy with all the help he was doing around the place as well, and that made him happy as well. It looked a lot different from when he had first gotten there, which meant there were more guests coming to stay there. It was a win for everyone really.
There was a chance that Zack was actually trying to distract himself from what was going on. He had died. Shot down by the company he had worked for. Dedicated himself to. He didn't die though, and now was in some world. It had been a hell of a month though. From running into Aerith, to finding out Cloud was there as well and that he had found Sephiroth and Angeal. It was a lot to take in! He wanted to go see his friend, but also wanted him to heal from the battle that had taken place.
So instead, Zack decided to just explore the new world. Which, had been a terrible idea. First, he followed a cute girl, but she blew him off when he tried to talk to him. Then there was a dog he wanted to pet, but it got called away by its owner. The sun setting over a nearby lake was also a really nice view he obviously needed to go see. After walking a bit more, he was lost. Again. Did that surprise anyone? Sighing, he ran his hands through his hair. "Oh boy, not again." He muttered to what he thought was just himself...

[attr=class, bulk] Genesis needed a break from Torensten. He had for a while, but the recent addition of Angeal into his and Sephiroth’s apartment made the entire place suffocating. It had been taxing enough dealing with an amnesiac Sephiroth, but it was almost worse that Angeal did remember everything. What was he supposed to say to Angeal now when he had chosen death over becoming a monster like him? His feelings towards his oldest friend were complicated and painful, neither of which were things that Genesis handled particularly well.
So he left. Ran away really, but he’d deny that vehemently if asked.
Genesis had visited the Crystallus Divider twice before, and while he didn’t regard it with the religious fervor that the local population did, it had always reminded him of his brief encounter with the goddess in the lifestream. He didn’t like remembering the circumstances around his defeat of course—it stung his pride that Zack had won and it reminded him of just how low he’d fallen—but he wouldn’t trade that experience for the world. It had turned his life around, and it never hurt to remember that. Not to mention that he thought he could use the poetic inspiration of the Divider right about now.
That all led to Genesis soaring over the Fractured Plains on his one black wing with the setting sun in the distance. It was always quicker to travel by air, even if he didn’t appreciate the startled looks from travelers on the path below. Typically he’d avoid the well-travelled roads, but there weren’t a lot of choices on the wide stretch of grassland. Still, he did his best to veer off towards a lake in the distance where there were less people about. It would take him longer to get to the Divider, but he appreciated the greater solitude. In fact, this far into the planes, there only seemed to be one dark-haired man below him with spiky hair and a large sword-
Oh. Oh. Had Angeal followed him?
Scowling, Genesis dove towards the ground, flapping out with his wing as he landed softly in the grass behind the man. “My friend, the fates are cruel. There are no dreams, no honor remains. The arrow has left the bow of the goddess.” Genesis was fuming when he turned towards the man, but he paused as he noticed some subtle differences between him and Angeal that he hadn’t been able to spot from the air. He wasn’t as bulky as Angeal, and while his hair was styled similarly, it wasn’t really the same. Not to mention the cross-shaped scar on his cheek wasn’t something that Angeal had-
Realization struck Genesis, and he recoiled backwards in shock from the man standing across the grassland from him. “...Zack?”
Looking around, he realized he didn't recognize a single thing about where he was. Which wasn't really too shocking, since he had really only been in Torensten since he arrived here. Sighing, he put his hands on his hips. He had to admit, the place he had stumbled across was pretty, in its own way. Zack Fair had seen war, had seen his company be attacked by copies of someone he would like to think was his friend, seen his friend floating in a pod of mako, the militia of the company he worked for aiming guns at him. He had been through a lot, but still liked to look on the brighter side of things.
Speaking of seeing things, was he now staring to hear things too? Maybe he had heard Genesis quote Loveless so many times, he was starting to hear it in his head at random times as well. Hearing a foot step backwards, his name being called confirmed that he wasn't hearing things. Turning around, he saw the person to which the voice belonged to. "Genesis?"
First Class SOLDIER Rhapsodos was here. In a way, it really didn't surprise Zack. He had taken Genesis' life with his own two hands. Did that mean he had been here this entire time? Okay, so it hadn't really been that long, but that wasn't the point. The point was that he was here, standing in front of Zack, obviously in shock at seeing him. The big question in Zack's head was one that was pretty important.
Was Genesis pissed off at him? He was the reason Genesis had fallen. He was pretty sure everything ended on decent terms, since in all reality, Genesis hadn't really been himself right before everything had happened. That didn't mean he was holding a grudge. Zack wanted to go for the Buster Sword, just in case, but stopped himself. He didn't want to cause any problems when there was a chance there wouldn't be any. "Um, it's good to see you again." For once in his life, Zack really wasn't sure what to say.

[attr=class, bulk] Zack looked equally surprised to see him, which meant that their encounter was an accident. Really, what were the odds? Out of the millions of people on Zephon, he just had to run into Angeal’s protege? It felt like the machinations of a god much crueler than he’d ever thought the goddess to be. Which is maybe what prompted him into another poetic mood.
“When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end The goddess descends from the sky Wings of light and dark spread afar She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting.”
Despite the optimistic ending, he used it more as a lamentation than anything, since clearly they were the beasts. Genesis half expected that they would fight right here honestly, especially when Zack’s hand briefly twitched towards the hilt of the buster sword. Genesis wasn’t opposed to a rematch—he’d welcome the chance to prove that Zack’s victory had been a fluke even if the boy had gotten pretty skilled—but some part of him was still glad when the dark-haired man stayed his hand. It meant that maybe he felt as uncertain of where they stood as Genesis did. Were they still enemies? Were they friends? Neither of those felt particularly correct.
Zack awkwardly expressed that it was good to see him, and Genesis could barely contain a snort at that. “You don’t have to lie. Save us both the trouble.” It wasn’t too surprising though. The newer First-class SOLDIER had always been too nice for his own good. In his quest to be a hero, he’d taken up the mantle of all three of them even though he’d been an outsider to their friendship and didn’t particularly owe them anything. It was always incredibly uncomfortable to deal with someone who didn’t have a selfish bone in their body.
“Who am I kidding, you might even mean that,” Genesis muttered, rubbing his own forehead as he contemplated what to do with this. Maybe he should get his bearings first. “...How long have you been here, Zack? Tell me you haven't found anyone else yet.” He was going to absolutely murder Sephiroth and Angeal if they had just been sitting on this.
Zack had not been around Genesis enough to be able to memorize Loveless, and let's be honest, he wouldn't of been able to anyways. The whole thing was a confusing mess to Zack, so he never really paid much attention to it. What he did know though, was to never insult it. Not in front of Genesis anyways. He had learned that lesson from Angeal, and it wasn't one he was about to forget. When Genesis spoke the words from his favorite book, Zack gave a nod. "Uh yeah. I agree." Was really all he could come up with. He did give himself a mental pat on the back for at least saying something though.
Genesis stated that he didn't have to lie, and Zack was about to argue with him before Genesis spoke again. His spiky hair moved only slightly as he gave a nod. "I do mean that Genesis, it really is good to see you. And when I say you, I mean you." The last time he had seen the other First Class SOLDIER, then man definitely had not been himself. Well, not the real last time. The last time was in Banora when he left him there. Is this where he had gone after that?
Zack had felt terrible for leaving him there, but he knew Banora would be a spot that Genesis would feel at home, since it was his home after all. Then again, he had slaugtered people in that same town, so maybe that hadn't been Zack's brightest idea. Well, everything seemed to have worked out anyways, right? They were here now, no harm done! Right?
Genesis asked Zack how long he had been there. "About a month. What about y-" The second question hit Zack like brick wall. "Wh-what do you mean anyone else?" Genesis could also be looking for others as well, but the way the question was asked made Zack think that Genesis was seeing if he had been the first to see Zack. Either way, Zack was starting to have more hope that maybe he would see the others again.

[attr=class, bulk] Zack agreed with his Loveless interpretation, even though the blank look on his face suggested that he had no idea where Genesis was going with it or even what he’d just said. Genesis was torn between finding that annoying or annoyingly endearing, so he let it slide with a suspicious look in Zack’s direction. How dare Angeal’s student be so stupid and so nice. Emphasis on stupid.
The First-Class protested that it really was good to see him as he actually was and not how he’d been during their last encounter. The distinction left Genesis a bit lost for words as he stared at the dark-haired man across from him. Maybe Zack was more observant than he tended to give him credit for. After all, they’d only ever encountered each other as enemies, so he wouldn’t have blamed Zack for thinking that he had always been a monster. But it appeared that he’d seen through to the heart of things, and Genesis didn’t know how to feel about that.
“...I only wanted to stop my degradation.” It wasn’t quite an apology, but the admission left him feeling vulnerable anyway. All of his actions and all of his lost honor really boiled down to that, didn’t it? He’d failed to take down Shinra or to cause any meaningful changes there, but he had his health and his life. And that was something. Selfish, but when had Genesis been anything else?
It appeared that Zack had only been there for about a month or so, and his reaction to being asked about others told Genesis all that he needed to know. Zack was definitely alone. A pitiable state for the extroverted man, but it’s where he’d been during their last encounter too. Exiled by Shinra and hunted down with only a comatose grunt for company. It was almost enough to make him feel bad for Zack. Almost.
“Do you really think it would just be you and I?” Genesis asked with a sigh as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m not going there yet though. Knowing you, you’ll just get excited and run off before I’m even finished speaking.” As soon as he heard Angeal’s name at any rate, though Genesis wouldn’t blame him for that one. It wasn’t every day that your friends came back from the dead.
“My friend, do you fly away now? To a world that abhors you and I? All that awaits you is a somber morrow, no matter where the winds may blow.” Genesis mused before crossing his arms. “Regrettably, I’ve been here for over a year. Though the scenery is considerably better than Midgar I suppose.” The lowest of bars really, but it warranted being said.
It occurred to him that he should ask where Zack was staying. Hopefully he wasn’t just camping out in a cave somewhere in this wilderness. “You don’t live out here, I hope? We have an apartment in Torensten if you haven’t been to that city yet.”
Genesis himself wasn’t quite sure where he was going with that line of questioning, and he dearly hoped that he hadn’t just accidentally offered Zack space on their couch.
Anyone who knew Zack knew an adult with the energy of a child and endless positivity. That's how he liked to be. He liked being someone people felt happy being around. Most of the time, he was naturally like that. Though, not at all times. The last years he had on Gaia had made it hard to keep up his upbeat demeanor, but he did so for Cloud. Though the blonde had been out of it most of the time, Zack wanted to make sure his friend never felt scared or worried. Inside though, Zack was fighting.
When Genesis admitted that he only wanted to stop his degradation, Zack looked down at the ground. He knew that. Angeal had been doing the same, but decided to just put an end to it, and had Zack do it for him. "I know. You both did." He never blamed the two SOLDIERs for anything that had happened. It wasn't their fault and they were just trying to become normal. Well, as normal as they could be as SOLDIERs. None of them were normal, they were enhanced humans after all.
At his next words, Zack looked back at Genesis. "I was hoping it wouldn't be." Realizing that his choice of words could have made it seem like he was hoping it wasn't just he and Genesis and that it could be taken wrong, he threw up his hands. "Not that I don't want that. It's just that, I'd like to see everyone is all." The fact that Zack was probably already giving Genesis a headache could be a good sign, it meant they could maybe go back to the way things were before. Just maybe.
Genesis was right, Zack probably would run off at the confirmation of Angeal being there. "No I wouldn't! I, uh, don't really know my way around this new world that well yet." That was a main reason, but he also wouldn't want to be rude and just run off from Genesis after seeing him for the first time since leaving him in Banora.
Loveless was spoken again, and Zack actually somewhat understood what the words meant. Though, he wasn't sure what it meant for this situation, but it didn't sound pleasant. Zack's eyes widened when Genesis said he had been her for over a year. "A year!? But it wasn't that long ago I left Banora with Cloud just to be gunned down by Shinra." He had heard that people were "pulled" from different times and all that, but to actually come across the situation was a whole different thing.
"Uh, no I don't. I actually live in Torensten as well. I'm staying in a little inn. I help the landlady with projects as part of my rent fee. It really helped when I first got here." He could probably pay her for the room in full now, but he didn't mind continuing to help her still. Genesis had said we, and Zack looked up at the sky. It was sounding like Angeal was here after all.

[attr=class, bulk] He didn’t like the somber mood left behind when Zack mentioned that Angeal had only been trying to stop his degradation as well. It was true of course—his oldest friend had been in a lot of pain and only sought to end it. Genesis had come to terms with that. He didn’t blame Angeal for it anymore necessarily, but that didn’t change how much his actions had broken everyone that he left behind. They always were a mess without Angeal.
Zack protested that he wouldn’t just go running off, so Genesis let out a defeated sigh as he glanced over at the lake next to them. It was sparkling in the light of the sunset, and he was annoyed at the scenery for having the audacity to look beautiful during this sort of reunion. “Don’t excuse him just because it’s the first selfish thing he’s ever done,” Genesis finally muttered, giving up on pretending that Angeal wasn’t around. “If anyone deserved to punch him in the face for what he did, it’s you.”
Come to think of it, Zack probably needed a warning on Sephiroth as well. Genesis hadn’t been around when that particular carnage went down, but he knew that Zack had encountered the silver-haired SOLDIER while he’d been out of his mind. It was a massacre that he wasn’t sad to have missed. Particularly when the only survivors were picked up by that sadist of a scientist, Hojo. “Oh, and do be careful what you say to Sephiroth. He’s in a delicate situation with his amnesia, and I’d prefer not to set him off.” The last thing they needed was Zack charging in the door to their apartment and asking him questions about Nibelheim and Jenova.
Zack seemed shocked that Genesis had been there for over a year, and he protested that it had been just recently that he’d left him in Banora. Genesis probably should have stopped to explain that people could be plucked from different times, but he was too distracted by Zack’s other revelation. “You were what?” He demanded at the news that the SOLDIER had been gunned down by Shinra. It should have been tragic, but since the man was standing directly in front of him alive and well, Genesis was more annoyed at the implication than anything. “Really? You struck me down just to leave and die ten minutes later? Ugh.”
Throwing up his hands, Genesis paced off to the side towards the water as another Loveless quote that fit the occasion rose to his lips. “‘Ripples form on the water’s surface, the wandering soul knows no rest.’ And neither do the dead apparently.” Turning back towards Zack, Genesis crossed his arms. “Well. If you’re living in Torensten too, then that’s perfect I suppose. Sephiroth and I have an apartment there. Angeal is our recent plus one.”
The SOLDIERs all each seemed to play a role. Zack was the upbeat one, always trying to keep the mood light. Angeal was the responsible one, the one that thought before he acted and tried to keep everyone out of trouble. Genesis was the one that was trouble, he liked to just act and get things done however he saw fit. Sephiroth was calm one who didn't speak much, but he worked hard and kept out of the drama of the others but could put a stop to any arguing. How they all ended up in the top of the SOLDIER ranks was a mystery, but they were.
Hearing Genesis sigh was actually calming to Zack, as he heard it quite often back on Gaia. Neither of them had changed, and Zack was glad for that. When Genesis spoke next, Zack looked at the ground. Angeal always thought of others before himself, except for one time. Snapping his head back up, Zack's eye went wide. "I would never punch him! Or any of you for that matter. That's not my style." True, what Angeal had put him through had been hell, but what Angeal himself had been going through had also been hell. It was a tough situation.
When Genesis warned Zack about Sephiroth, Zack just blinked a few times. "You're telling me that Sephiroth doesn't remember anything? Oh wow, well I guess that's probably for the best. I'll act as though nothing happened!" This could be a good thing, as Sephiroth would be just like he wanted to remember as, the calm, cool Silver General he looked up to. Nibelheim had been a nightmare, and everything after were things Zack wanted to forget. Why couldn't he have gotten amnesia, at least for that part?
Let's be honest, Zack had forgotten that Genesis didn't know what had happened to him due to Shinra's actions. "Uh yeah, that. Apparently since we escaped and could expose Shinra, they had us hunted down. Luckily I hid Cloud, but I couldn't avoid the ambush that was waiting. So I took them on. It went on for a while before they just kept coming and in the end, they got me." Zack hated to admit that he had lost, he was a First Class SOLDIER after all. Zack scratched the back of his head. "Uh, yeah. Sorry about that." He wasn't sure if he was saying sorry for killing Genesis or sorry for dying shortly after.
Watching Genesis, Zack hoped that he wasn't really that mad. An angry Genesis was terrifying, and even though Zack had defeated him once, Genesis had been weakened at the time due to his degradation. He wasn't sure he could take him on again. Another Loveless quote came out of Gen's mouth and Zack understood only the last line, and figured it was somewhat directed at him. Genesis stated they all lived together and Zack instantly smiled. "You're all living together!? That's perfect, we'll have to have movie nights!"
[attr=class,lyric1]infinite in mystery is the gift of
[attr=class,lyric2]the goddess
[attr=class, bulk] Zack protested that he would never punch Angeal, and Genesis rolled his eyes in response. “To be fair, all three of us likely deserve one from you.” That was as close to an apology or an admission of guilt as Zack was likely to get from him, and he better appreciate it. Genesis hated admitting his own mistakes. It felt so demeaning.
Thankfully, Zack was distracted by the news of Sephiroth’s amnesia, so they didn’t have to linger there for long. He nodded as the other SOLDIER agreed to behave as though nothing had happened around him. “Probably for the best. I haven’t broken the news about Jenova to him for the second time yet. Not that it was my fault the first time around of course!” So what if Genesis had been the one to tell him the truth about his origins? He hadn’t made Sephiroth fall into a self-loathing research spiral that had ended with him burning down a town. Anyway, Sephiroth had told him to rot which was way more rude if you asked him. So really, who was the victim here? Clearly it was Genesis himself.
Zack also gave him more details about his death at the hands of Shinra troopers, which snapped Genesis out of his self-delusional spiral. Apparently they had overwhelmed Zack with sheer numbers, and the red-haired SOLDIER had to frown as he pictured it. The thought of the man’s death bothered him more than he cared to admit, so naturally he had to pour on the snark to cover for it. “I suppose if you weren’t so tired after our fight, you may have stood a better chance. Now there’s some irony for you.”
Uncalled for? Probably, but it was better than admitting that he cared even the smallest amount.
Zack seemed thrilled to learn that the three SOLDIERs were currently all staying together in Torensten, but Genesis couldn’t contain a snort when he suggested that they have a movie night sometimes. “Oh goddess help us,” he protested as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Pride is lost. Wings stripped away, the end is nigh.” Despite the overly dramatic Loveless quote, he couldn’t help the quirk of his lips upward into something resembling a smile.
“The real difficulty of course is in getting the three of us to agree on a movie. Sephiroth likes documentaries. Documentaries. And you didn’t hear it from me, but Angeal is secretly fond of romantic comedies.” At this point, the three of them hadn’t done much more than tip-toe awkwardly around each other, so it was surprisingly nice to remember a time when there had been nothing to complicate their friendship. As loathe as Genesis was to admit it, perhaps introducing Zack into the dynamic would do them some good. He was at least better at keeping things light-hearted than the rest of them put together.
“...I could take you I suppose. If you wanted." The offer may have been made with crossed-arms, but it was still an offer.
