After what seemed to be a long afternoon of teaching her class how to use Enemy Skill, the blue mage found herself wandering through the drafty halls of the University. It was a vast campus and from all that had happen in Torensten as of late, plenty of people were out and about repairing damages. The instructor kept to herself, nodding with a smile to those whom she passed by during her path to the library. Before her ex-student, Seifer Almasy, had left, she told him that she would do some research to find a way back to their Homeworld. 'That jerk~', that soft smile she gave people in passing had faded as she clasped her hands behind her back. 'Why didn't he say goodbye? He said he'd come back but who knew how long that would be?', another mental slap as she found the library; bringing both hands to the handle to pull one of the large double doors. Even with everyone hustling and bustling about doing their business, the library was empty.
The instructor found a seat towards the corner of the library. 'Might as well park it here since majority of what I'm looking for will be in this aisle', she thought as she looked up and down the bookcases that were to her side. 'There has to be an article among all these books that could describe the strange way people have been coming in and out of Zephon. At least in Balamb, there was a for sure reason why. The remanents of Ultimecia's reign from the future had time compression portals scattered throughout the world..throughout time. No wonder Seifer was four years older than her when they were supposed to be the same age. Crossing through those different portals might have sent him through a different time in which Quistis might have not aged though he had. Made sense since he said he had been looking for her for years but the portal she ran into to cross over into Zephon might have thrust her throughout time without her knowing or aging. Strange how the time continuum worked that way...
----
Quistis walked among the tower of books as she dragged her fingertips along the spines of books which she passed. She looked at the titles carefully; squinting to make sure she was reading the titles properly and hopes that she didn't pass something important up. Better to be thorough..
'Stop~', a voice in her head screamed; her fingertips touching the spine of a book titled 'Outworlders; the influx on their existence in Zephon'. 'Finally we're working in sync, Diablos', she smirked, taking the book out of its original spot. The blonde opened the book to skim through the table of context. It was a straight shot to the spot she intended to sit at, so there was no need to look up. 'Hmm, let's see~', she narrowed her eyes; concentrating on the chapter titles within the book. 'Maybe they have references that can lead me to other findings..', she paused just before she got to her seat.
Quistis placed the book on the table and pulled her chair out to take a seat; scooting in close to make herself comfortable and sit up properly with her back straight. Both of her hands rested one on top of the other as she began skimming through the chapter where there were instances of others that just appeared in Zephon.
As the instructor leaned in closer to read the words carefully, the chain on her left wrist dangled. She paused, looking over at the makeshift bracelet. 'You miss him, don't you? He left that necklace as a way to tell you that he'd be back..', that guttural whisper through her mind. 'Stop, Diablos..I thought we were going to work as a team'. He wasn't wrong though. She did miss him. Still looking at the necklace which was now a makeshift bracelet for her, Quistis placed her fingertips on the silver plating softly; dragging them slowly across the smooth surface. Hoping that by doing so, it would be a way to call for him; to return quickly and safely.
'I told you to kiss him~', that guttural voice was disrupted by the sound of the library door opening. It was quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Snapping out of her trance, she looked up to see who popped into the library. The place was large so she wasn't upset with the fact that someone might interrupt her while researching. In fact, she was curious to see who popped in at this time.
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Her heels clicked along the polished floors. The university was vast and she enjoyed every inch of it. She found her niche in engineering a mechanical messenger bird and enjoying the arts in all its forms. She joined the harpists in the practice often, as they learn to use magic to enhance the sound. She attended the academic discussions and forums. She even enjoyed prolonged studies in the magical arts, no matter the form of it. Even now, her heart raced at the thought of the library that laid just down the hall. The long rows of leather-bound books, all at her disposal without interruption. Something she would not have in Lindblum castle. Not with the constant call for duty and the need to be available.
She pushed the heavy and elaborately carved doors open. The hinges seemed to need some oil as it let out a soft creek and opened into a quiet library full of magically lit chandeliers. ALong the walls, candles were housed in transparent glass domes. The light shed seemed to only make her golden clothes glow in its amber light. Soon, Lady Hilda found she was not alone, despite her expectations. It was odd. Who could it be at this hour? Her eyes turned to see Quistis glancing back at her. The woman was alone with a book in her hand.
“Pardon me. I did not mean to disturb you.” She stood straight with her delicate hands clasping before her. Her words were gentle so as not to be overly loud in the library. “While I have your attention, may I inquire where the summoning section might be?” A soft smile touched her face. The other woman looked well versed and Hilda wondered if she might have seen her around the campus before, or if she was new.
The instructor saw someone emerge from the beautifully carved oak doors. The woman who walked past the door seemed to have a glow. Maybe it was from the light thanks to the chandeliers? Either way, Quistis figured she was of great importance, by the way she was dressed. Such elegance. The blue mage was wearing a simple pink blouse that was buttoned up to her collar bone, khaki slacks and a pair of black wedged ankle boots. As the lovely woman approached her, Quistis stood from her seat, pushing her chair in. She offered the newcomer a friendly smile, clasping her hands behind her back and offered a slight bow. With a shake of the head, she finally spoke. “No, ma'am. There's no need to apologize. I was just doing some research for myself and a friend of mine..”
The instructor approached the other female and extended a hand out for her to shake. “I've only been here for a couple of weeks and I'm still trying figure out where anything is in this University. It is a lot bigger than the last place I taught...”, Quistis shrugged, waving a hand to dismiss the idea. “Come to think of it~”, she looked up thoughtfully, tapping her index fingertip with her free hand. “I think the summoning section should be~”,she looked over to her right, seeing the plethora of bookcases, one with the 'summon' section on the end-cap. Looking over at the golden female, the blue mage nodded her head in the direction where she saw the section specified. “It's this way~”, she beckoned the other female to follow.
Approaching the section, Quistis turned to face the elegantly dressed female; palm placed on her forehead. “My goodness. Where are my manners~”, she said, pulling her palm away from her face but pushed her glasses up from the bridge of her nose. “I'm Quistis Trepe. I'm the new instructor for the Blue Mage course. I apologize for my lack of manners, ma'am”, another slight bow to the female before her.
'Quistis', that guttural voice whispered in her thoughts. 'There's something not right about this section. I'm sensing something strange',said that familiar tone of Diablos. 'You'll be needing me soon if you continue down this section of the library~'
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]The young woman stood up to greet and politely responded to her. “Oh? If I may inquire, what type of research?” Hilda asked, interested in the other’s work. Then, when Hilda realized she might be intruding too far. “Ah. Forgive me. Please do not let me keep you from your work.” This was a place of academics and research was an important task in order to continue progress. It was something the Lady highly respected.
She reached out to give Quistis a firm handshake. The smile was returned to the new instructor. “I see. I am also new and still learning the layout.” She was being modest with her knowledge. She quietly let Quistis sort out her thoughts and she turned to look in the direction Quistis claimed the summoning section was. Then she followed Quistis down to that aisle.
They stopped just before the book case when Quistis introduced herself. “Instructor Trepe, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I don’t believe I have met a blue mage expert before.” She had read about the Qu and their extraordinary abilities to gain abilities from what they imbibed...and they had quite the voracious appetite. Though, looking at this young woman, she decided that maybe her methods were a bit different. “Blue magic? May I ask how it works?” Certainly not everyone simply devoured a beast and received their abilities here on Zephon?
She shook her head. “Ah. My manners must have left me as well. I am Lady Hilda.” Hilda dismissed her apology. Her blue eyes turned to the rows of books. “There are so many to choose from.” Hilda started skimming through a few. Though, what caught her eye was at the end of the row, there was a pile of disheveled books. She could smell the musty tomes from here. For a moment, she wondered if she should disturb the pile. Perhaps some scholar laid them aside for use. However, that made it only more tempting didn’t it? It must have meant these texts held some decent information.
Still, something seemed off about these books. They weren’t exactly organized were they. And something red seemed to wriggle among them. Or was her eyes playing tricks on her? Curiosity got the better of her. She walked up to it carefully. Then, she knelt down, her dress neatly folding beneath her, to observe the book. It’s bookmark was wagging like a snake or tail. Gently, and cautiously, she reached down to open the cover. That was when it snapped back shut on her. She gave an indignant huff. “Come now. No need to be offended.”
The instructor was quite fascinated with how many people she has met recently. First it a mage and Claire Farron in Provo, then meeting Serah Farron who got her a position at this University, now this elegant female. There was something about her that rang..royalty. It reminded her of those stories Matron used to read the girls at the Orphanage about Queens and Kings from far off lands and princes and princesses. They had pictures in the books, so seeing this woman before her brought back some distant memories. Though it did made her homesick, it did bring a smile to her face. “Please don't worry, ma'am. I just came in to browse and see if there's some researching I can do to help a~”, Quistis paused for a second, feeling the bracelet she wore, “friend and I return back to our Homeworld”. She didn't know why she felt a knot in the pit of her stomach. Or maybe it was Diablos trying to tug for her attention.
While walking through array of books, the Lady Hilda inquired about her enemy skill ability. “Oh, Blue Magic. My methods might be different than what other Blue Mages use...”, she began, walking with her hands clasped behind her back. “Where I am from, enemies drop certain items which I use to give me the ability to mimic their skills. Unless I have the Guardian Force, Eden, junctioned to me. He is the Guardian Force who has the ability to devour enemies. I..don't particularly enjoy using that method and ability but as long as enemies have certain items I can use to gain their skill.I have to do what I have to do to learn it..”, a soft chuckle, bringing a hand to her lips to cover.
The pair exchanged pleasantries and introductions, though to be fair, Quistis should have known better. She was a teacher, so it was always good manners to introduce herself. “I apologize again, Lady Hilda. I'm terribly sorry for not stating who I was to begin with..”. Matron would be upset with her considering she taught all the orphanage kids good manners.
Coming to the other end of the bookcase, the voice in Quistis' head grew louder. 'Stop!', he growled in which she could feel herself stopping in her tracks. Lady Hilda proceeded to the stack of books that were..placed there for some odd reason? Funny, there was no one in the library before her and this fine lady didn't enter until moments after she did. The instructor was sure that the librarian worked swiftly to return books back to their proper places and if students or faculty checked books out, they would have taken them or give it to the librarian to return to its rightful shelf.
It seems like curiosity got the better of the Lady Hilda while Quistis remained still. 'If you go closer to those books, you'll be seeing me soon, blondie..', that guttural voice whispered in her ear. She shook her head quickly, trying to catch up with the female who moved on ahead of her. Being a SeeD, her instincts to protect kicked in, even though she only wished to summon Diablos in dire circumstances. But as the other female approached the stack of books, Quistis couldn't help but quirk a brow, seeing the book Lady Hilda stood in front of wiggle. “Wait..is that book..alive?”
Typically the Blue Mage had to be on guard, as a SeeD mercenary but also to protect the curious female who was speaking to the book. 'Something is not right, Quistis. Summon~!'
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]“No need to be so formal. I am simply another woman of letters.” Oh. She was being cheeky now with what to call herself. Woman of letters meaning product she was engineering and the less used term to define scholars. Still, she had no true political standing or much funds just yet. This was no longer Lindblum and so she had much less at her disposal. Still, her knowledge and etiquette made her quick friends with both academics and aristocrats here. If she could decide how she wanted to proceed, she may be able to obtain gifts, funding, and some form of status to help put her feet on the ground.
If she desired them to be on the ground.
“I certainly hope you find your answers. I am sure you have plenty of people who miss you back in your homeworld.” Hilda gave her a reassuring smile. She missed her daughter and some aspects of her court. What was Cid up to? Could he manage Lindblum without her? She shook her head to clear her thoughts. No. None of that. Not right now.
Instead, she tilted her head slightly to listen to Quistis, while still keeping her eye out for literature of interest. It surprised her a little to know that she did indeed devour an enemy to learn an ability. What in the world was a Guardian Force? She supposed that maybe she should sit in on Quistis’s class. “The Qu of my world primarily devoured an enemy to gain abilities. It is interesting that you need only to obtain an item from the enemy to learn. Do you need a particular item? Also, how do you accommodate all students and their unique styles on Blue Magic?” Surely in this world there were so many different types of ways to perform such magic. There had to be some things they had in common. Some basics, surely.
Hilda gave a small smile as she studied the face of the leather-bound book with a marker that wriggled. It had a scary mask on the front, but otherwise was unremarkable. Not even a title to show. Yet, this seemed interesting to her. She could already feel the enchantment inside the book. “It appears so.” She responded to Quistis asking if it was alive.
Suddenly, the book vibrated along the ground, as if Hilda had somehow irritated it. She put her arms up as the book finally flung itself open. It bombarded her with pages from the book. Luckily, her sleeves, and perhaps her protect spell that shimmered blue about her, protected her from the swirling pages. Once the whirlwind calmed, she quickly stood up and back away. “That’s no way to treat literature or greet someone.” She tutted at the book. It’s manners were awful.
The book grew in size and stood itself up with a float spell. “It might be scared. Let’s only aim to stop it from causing anymore damage.” The instructor said she was blue mage, did she not? It meant she had some experience in a fight.
This University was vast, but Quistis didn't really take the time to get to know others. She was the type of person who always wanted to be alone, considering she had been that way ever since the fall of the sorceress Ultimecia. Teaching, tutoring, grading, helping out in the infirmary with Dr.Kadowaki and curling up to a good book. 'Miss? There's no one back home to miss me..', she thought to herself when the Lady Hilda made a comment about people missing her back in Balamb. 'There's no one to miss me. There's the Trepies, but those students are Triple Triad players. Even if I were to return back to Garden, who knows what time frame I would return back to. Would people even notice I was gone?', another thought to roll around in that noggin of hers. 'You know Quistis, Seifer said he was looking for you and he seemed genuinely concerned when you've gone missing from Balamb. That obviously tells you something~', 'Enough Diablos! No more mentioning Seifer!', 'But it's driving you mad. You have feelings for him and you have to admit, you do miss him as of now..'. The Blue Mage shook her head to rid of Diablos' whispering but felt the necklace Seifer left her on her wrist..
Thank Hyne Lady Hilda was able to ask a question, distracting Quistis from listening to Diablos any further. “I mean, where I am from, I can always steal or take an item to learn an enemies skill but like I said, I don't like to use the devour ability. I only use it if me or my comrades are unable to steal the certain item or if a enemy does not drop the item. Like for instance, if I were to fight a Catcherpillar and this creature wasn't able to leave a Spider Web or did not drop it during a battle, I'd simply have to devour the creature in order to obtain its abilities. When in class, it is a little more difficult to explain considering there are several ways to go about obtaining certain skills for Blue Magic, not to mention I have to study up on bestiaries and go for Field training to see which particular method my students like to use...”
Even in these field training exercises, the instructor would need a guide to escort her class since she is not familiar with Zephon and barely had time to study it's geography and cities. Maybe that was something else to do besides looking for a way home. She did promise Seifer she'd try on her downtime but with how things were looking and trying to keep up with the pace of her classes and surroundings, that downtime was looking to be very slim.
When Lady Hilda inspected the book to look at the cover, Diablos began to whisper. That guttural tone echoing throughout Quistis' mind. 'Back away from this book. Let her deal with it~', 'No! If this book indeed appears to be alive and attacks, there's no way I'm leaving her!', she spat back at Diablos. A blue tinge of light began to encircle the instructor, seeing how the Lady Hilda had a form of her own protection; watching those pages swirl around, almost as if to distract. Quistis had cast a 'protect' spell of her own; always wanting to be on guard. She is a trained SeeD mercenary. Even though creatures might be stronger or weaker than the ones from her Homeworld, she was determined to study it, learn from it and possibly take its skill...
Quistis took a step forward, watching as Lady Hilda tried to scold the book for having no manners. It was best not to question how people were in this world, considering that people in Zephon had been appearing from other worlds and probably causing a large melting pot..
It seems that the book began to double its size and began to float. With a bit of quick thinking, Quistis took another step forward, arms reaching up before crossing over her chest, closing her eyes. That same blue tinge glowed around her body. Once she opened her eyes, she held her hands outward. Flames began to emit from the instructor's hands, firing outwards as she casts a 'firaga' spell on the book before them.
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Quistis looked distracted. Was she having a whole conversation with herself? Or was she thinking of her home back in the other world? Maybe Hilda should not have mentioned anything. Her eyes flicked back to the books as if she had taken note of anything. She did not know the woman enough to make mention of it further. It was not polite to intrude on someone’s personal life.
Lady Hilda listened to Quistis explanation on blue magic. However, the instructor only partially answered her question. Blue magic was certainly interesting. To take the essence from an item or monster part in order to unlock magical potential. It was nearly the opposite of Hilda’s own latent powers. But she didn’t not respond as to how she accommodates the different styles of blue magic, other than tailor it to them in training sessions. Hilda supposed that was not such a bad way to do things. Just simply time consuming. She wondered if there was an easier way to handle that, or if her classes were small enough for that.
Hilda was quick enough to back away from the book, but she found she needed to move a little quicker to get out of the way Quistis’s firaga spell. The library was too narrow and the pile of books near the Tantarian too crowded. The edge of her dress caught fire, though she was quick to stamp it out. Oh dear. Seems she would need to find a new one or get this one fixed.
Some of the swirling pages caught fire, and it scattered itself and embers to parts of the library.
Hilda looked at the book with a frown, and scoffed. “I do hate doing this in my Sunday best.” Hopefully she could prevent further damage to her attire.
Despite the fire spell, the exterior of the book took no damage. In fact, there was no scorch mark at all. Hilda read about these, she was quite sure. She always wanted one for herself to add to her own unique magical collection. “It will not take damage while closed.” She told Quistis, her eyes narrowed. “The only way is to find the entity inside. We must force it to open.”
‘Ah. So you wish to challenge me?’
“If that is the only way I can offer a pact with you.” She gave a coy smile and gracefully lowered her eyes to curtsey to it. Hilda straightened and eyed an ember starting to take flame near her. She crushed it beneath her heel.
“Careful with flames in the library. It would be a shame to lose such a beautiful place.” It was good thinking to think it would be weak to fire, but if not wielded carefully, the place could go in flames.
A magical air picked up around Hilda and a gentle glow touched her fingers, she pointed at a book on the ground. It illuminated in a soft blue-green glow before floating off the ground. With a gentle roll of her wrist she directed the book to thrust itself at the Tantarian. It seemingly just bounced off, but it was enough for the book to be knocked back and it’s pages exposed. The ancient paper, aged yellow with that musty spell, exposed not the demon. The book angrily snapped shut again, beginning to glow to emit a spell of its own.
It wasn't that the instructor wasn't being careless when it came to fighting. She knew books were important but didn't know what she was up against. Instead of thinking of her surroundings, she was thinking surviving whatever this was that was attacking. What would books be weak against? Fire obviously and the strongest magic she could use was Firaga. At least she cast a protect spell in case the book would attack, it was rather snippy when the Lady Hilda tried to speak to it. In any case, it would be unfortunate to destroy the precious, bounded written word, so using Diablos would be out of the question. Technically, he was a time/space Guardian Force and the area surrounding his target would most likely take them out of this dimension. But would that work? Maybe it was best not to try against the book-like creature considering that it snapped itself shut. 'So, it would seem that if it closed, the book wouldn't take as much damage. Being open would be vulnerable', she thought to herself, reaching down to her side to find that her 'Save-the-queen' had not been latched. 'Oh Hyne! The times that I~ wait a second', she bit her lower lip, moving forward but kept a bit of a distance between the book as well as standing several feet away from Lady Hilda.
'Physical attacks wouldn't do any harm, so it's best to keep using magic. At least me casting firaga seemed to do something..or at least stopped it from doing whatever it was about to do..', she thought as she watched the book's glow vanish. Still keeping on guard, the instructor watched as the book bounce up and down in mid-air; opening up quickly to lay flat on the ground..
'Page one hundred and twenty four', the book began to flip a couple of pages before shutting completely to float in mid air once more.
Quistis eyed the book cautiously, trying to think of another quick movement. Obviously striking while the book was closed wasn't going to do much, but perhaps using a bit of protecting spells might benefit both women. The blue mage stepped out again; arms coming up as that same blue tinge surrounded her body. Her arms crossed over her chest to form an X, eyes closing as she focused on the spell she was about to cast. Opening her eyes quickly, she extended her arms outwards in front of her. A flicker of green from above the instructor began to fall overhead, forming a circular pattern that surrounded her before disappearing once it hit the ground. At least now if the book tried to cast something against her, it would 'reflect' back on the book.
Another bounce mid-air then the book laid itself flat on the ground, opening. 'Page one hundred and fifty eight', it gave a couple of turns before a blue-ish/purple creature with horns and lightning shaped streaks under its eyes popped out of the pages; its red tail/bookmark still wiggling behind.“I've been found!”
Once spotted, sparkles of white and gold surrounded the creature within the book. 'Oh no, it looks like he's attacking', she thought as she remained in a defensive pose. All of a sudden, Quistis saw herself surrounded by a purple cloud. She brought her hands up as if to block the attack, but the green-ish glow twinkled around her. The reflect spell caused the purple cloud to disappear quickly only to surround the creature within the book.
Seeing if the book creature would take any damage after the purple cloud dissipated, it didn't flinch or groan. 'All right, it seems he's immune to poison..since that's what he tried to cast on me...', she thought as she gave a side glance to Lady Hilda, seeing if she was ready to take a crack at the book. She wanted to inform the fair female that a fire spell would come in handy but she probably knew what she was doing. Not to mention, would the book pick up on their language had she said anything? Best not to test that...
[attr="class","character-spring-1d"]Hilda kept up her work in knocking it back with tossed books. The small physical attack did little damage, but as long as it’s force caused the book to open, there was a chance for the little devil to show itself. She felt the glimmering warmth of protective spells from Quistis. Seemed the woman was talented in both blue magic and protection magic. Terribly powerful indeed.
After a few attempts, much to Hilda’s regretful treatment to the poor books, the Tantarian fell back. The pages flipped themselves through some unfelt wind, and there he was. A cute little imp between pages one hundred fifty eight and one hundred fifty nine. Between his cute glowing amber eyes and well manicured horns, Hilda knew she must sway the Tantarian to her side. She lacked offensive spells, so having it as a guard by her side seemed appropriate. Especially one that preferred to rest in a book most days, and only appeared when distrubed unexpectedly.
It cast its purple plumes of poison, which harmless bounced off of herself and Quistis. Terribly naughty, wasn’t it?
“Ah. There you are.” Hilda said sweetly. “So kind of you to join us.” Hilda had no elemental offensive magic, but she did not quite prefer the use of fire spells in this area, even if she had. She was more worried about it going out of control. If that happened, then they would not only have to escape the Tantarian, but also a burning library. Luckily, Hilda knew what demons were weak to and she had plenty of divine magic to make it happen.
Besides, everyone always needed more reading light.
There was a soft rustling of her ground as she leaned into her front foot and flourished her arm gracefully in front of her with a gentle movement. The ground beneath her lit with cool bright light that spiraled around her at her summons. Then, the room suddenly was far too bright. Her magic manifested in a prismatic orb with a holy blue aura. “Holy!” The magic exploded on the Tantarian, before slowly dimming out of existence. Soft blue wisps of the magic were the last to fade.
The Tantarian gave a small cry of “Ouch!” It quivered in pain first, leaving room for Quistis to possibly let off an attack of her own.
After a couple bounces the Tantarian was once more able to shut itself again with a loud thud. But this time the demon was terribly upset. It sparkled and spun, and this time the ground in front of Quistis was covered in a purple haze. Out of this haze, a mirror rose up to appear before Quistis. However, the reflection was not her own. Once the magical mirror solidified, it showed the image of the grim reaper holding a scythe. The suddenly its eyes glew red and the mirror shattered. It was the Tantarian’s attempt to cast doom.
