Mikoto tried to be nice in her own way with the torch. Yuffie Kisaragi
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] The great ninja was laughing at the young genome. Did Yuffie like seeing Mikoto in pain or difficulty? But, then Yuffie’s laughing was replaced by curiosity as she explained that only Wutaiians could eat them. So she didn’t think genome jaws could rival the jaws of a Wutaiian. Was that the name of a planet or locale? Either way, Mikoto tried to understand the rationale behind it. Maybe this was her way of sharing local cuisine to be friendly? [break][break] Mikoto rubbed her cheek to soothe the ache in her jaw and teeth. Then, extended her other hand for another bean. But she did not want to eat it this time. She wanted to study this sturdy bean. “What is the exocarp made of?” [break][break] She watched Yuffie explain how to be a ninja. “A ‘badass’ punches air?” She did not understand this third criteria Yuffie presented. Mostly, she didn’t understand the term ‘badass’. She curled her hand into a fist and looked at them. The rapier Kuja gifted her felt better in them. Well, working with tools felt better in general. [break][break] “Good at sneaking. Like not being caught by chocobos and farmers.” Mikoto said as she idly turned to look past Yuffie to see how relentless this other man might be. She did not know the Shinra or Wutai Clans. But pledging her allegiance to anything other than genomes and Terrans made her give a small frown. “What does allegiance mean to you? What does this Wutai clan do?” And did its meaning matter to the genome? [break][break] Mikoto felt quite at home in the woods. So far it was the normal sounds of wooded nights. And it held none of the danger of Headstone Forest. However, Yuffie seemed quite on edge as they walked through it. Mikoto could almost see Yuffie’s soul nearly escape when a raccoon zipped by. Yuffie suggested they go for the road. But Mikoto shook her head in dissent. It was safer here than out in the open. “I’m not afraid.” She wondered if Yuffie was doing what Kuja did. Saying things other than what was felt. Why did they do that? “The road isn’t safe yet.” They would be caught this close to the scene. [break][break] Mikoto looked around and found a long stick. The humans here fended off the dark with lights. She supposed she could help with that. She held her stick a loft and focused intently on its tip. A burst of fire appeared and magically stayed at its tip. Since Yuffie held the egg, Mikoto would be the lightbearer. [break][break] But Yuffie seemed already hurrying through the woods. Mikoto rushed to keep up. The owls seemed to have big eyes on the branches as they glared down at the girls. A snake slithered across the path. And there was some rustling as a fox tried to crawl under a shrub. [break][break] Then suddenly Mikoto asked, as the thought struck her, “Is the ghost that eats ghosts here?” She wanted to see it now.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
"Exo-who-in-the-what-now?" Yuffie asked, looking blankly at Mikoto when she asked about the 'exocarp'. Yuffie had no idea what that was, but once she re-ran the sentence through her head, she realised that Mikoto must have meant what the shell of the Da-chao Bean was made of. Of course, Yuffie didn't want to admit she didn't know, so she thought for a moment. "Uh, it's made out of.... dachaoinium," she answered, as if this was obvious and a very common every day fact.
Yuffie rolled her eyes when Mikoto asked what a badass did. "Noooo, they don't punch air! Well, not JUST punch air! They, y'know, kick butt! You know a badass 'cause they're SUPER cool and they can win fights and they've got super neat ninja moves! HI-YA!" She did a few more punches and a quick jumping kick to demonstrate, which probably would have been more impressive if she hadn't slipped on the ground when she landed, stumbled several steps forward, and nearly fallen over a discarded stick. She staggered back around, and let out a small laugh. "Landings don't count," she added quickly.
"Exactly! And we didn't get caught, so, ninjas!" Yuffie beamed. And then her face fell a little more thoughtful when Mikoto asked her next questions. "Well, allegiance to me means, y'know, doing what I say. 'cept when you don't wanna. 'cause REAL badasses don't follow the rules. That's why I was always getting in trouble back home for not studying. 'cause I don't need to follow the rules!" Yuffie explained, although 'explained' might have been a generous word to use. "And as for Wutai, well, it's... I mean, you can't really teach it to an outsider. I mean, don't you come from somewhere? Didn't the place you come from have, like, traditions n' stuff? Things that only your people do, that other people will just never understand. Wutai is like that! And it doesn't matter who tries to conquer it or take it away from me, the heart of a warrior of Wutai will always beat true!" Yuffie thumped her chest to demonstrate. "Just try to act like me and that'll be close enough!" She decided.
Mikoto said that she wasn't afraid, and Yuffie looked at her, glad her hood probably hid how wide her eyes were with fear. "W-well, neither am I, OBVIOUSLY, but I-I mean, you look pretty scared. So, uh, I better hold your hand. Just to make sure you're not too frightened," Yuffie suggested, walking over in the dark to take Mikoto's hand. She gave the other girl a quizzical look when she asked about the ghost-that-eats-ghosts. Oh! That was right! The Spirit of Halloween! The thing Yuffie had made up to get into this whole thing in the first place. "He might be! He doesn't just eat ghosts! He eats your soul even if you're still alive! He could be out there soooomewheeeere!" She waved her free arm around in her spookiest manner.
And then, somewhere in the darkness, a twig broke, and Yuffie screamed, grabbing Mikoto with both her arms, juggling the egg as she did so.
Nothing more reassuring than Mikoto telling you that she will eat the Spirit of Halloween. @blacksuit4
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Dachaoinium? She had never head of that before. Her tail swayed curiously behind her. Was it a common item? It must have been based on the ease she was able to speak it. Hmm. Then, Yuffie was already showing her some of these badass ninja skills…which frankly landed her on her bottom. Mikoto simply watched, unsure if these ninja moves were really something to learn if one ended up beating herself up. [break][break] But, they did successfully get away. [break][break] Mikoto was even more thoroughly confused at Yuffie’s definition of allegiance. You do what the leader says, except not when not. “At your home, if you deny your master, he did not decommission you?” If she had disobeyed Garland, then she would have had her soul stripped and her vessel discarded. She watched her curiously for a heart beat, before turning to look away to the path before them again. Mikoto would have done anything to have the strength enough to save Terra. But in the end, the will of the stronger won. [break][break] “My home? Traditions?” Mikoto wrinkled her brow. This was a hard thought for her to comprehend. “The souls slept often. The vessels simply watched the crystal and wandered to keep in shape. We ran tests on each other.” Until they were ready for souls. She lowered her eyes, Black Mage Village was also her home outside Bran Bal. “But we helped each other, made sure the owls were fed, the scarecrows were up, and raised Bobby Corwen.” Her tail swayed with the thought. She liked that home. She got to travel to see the dwarves and learned trade. “What were your traditions?” Yuffie told Mikoto to act like Yuffie. But how did she do that without knowing what those traditions were? She supposed she could simply mimic. [break][break] For someone who was frightened, Yuffie sure talked a lot. Wouldn’t one want to be quiet and hide from a thing that they feel threatened by? Instead, Yuffie seemed to talk under duress. Interesting. Then, Yuffie’s hand slipped into her’s. She curiously down at her hand. “I am not scared.” She said simply, confused at why Yuffie thought Mikoto needed relief from fear. But she supposed there was strength in numbers, so perhaps, Yuffie simply wanted to make sure Mikoto did not leave her again. [break][break] Humans were too hard to understand. [break][break] When she claimed the Spirit of Halloween eats ghosts and souls, Mikoto furrowed her brow. Spirits, ghosts and souls were the same thing. It felt so ludicrous that spirits eat other spirits. Maybe the spirit was actually a genome. She felt her tail sway contentedly at the thought. Mikoto would very much like that. Then a thought came to Mikoto. Would Yuffie be this frightened of Mikoto if she knew Mikoto could eat souls? [break][break] It was not a long-lived thought, as Yuffie interrupted it with a scream and thumped into her. Mikoto let off a small off and raised her torch higher, so as not to drop it. Unfortunately, she had no free hands to move Yuffie without dropping the egg. So she awkwardly stood there, before trying a different tactic. “I will eat the Spirit if it comes for us.” Surely that was what Yuffie was afraid of. It was the closest to reassurance Mikoto would give. [break][break] “We are nearly back to town.” Mikoto looked longingly down the path where the city lights were already getting closer.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie shot Mikoto a quizzical look, as she tried to mentally unpack what she had meant by 'decommission'. She shrugged, because she had no idea. It sounded like a Shinra word, and Yuffie had no time for Shinra words. "Well, I dunno about cedomission," she said, getting the word completely wrong, "But he'd yell at me a lot. And ground me. And one time I thought he was gonna, like, banish me or something, which, by the way, was SO unfair. I mean, I didn't put that super valuable vase by the window where ANYBODY sneaking in could fall into it. And if he didn't want me breaking into the Pagoda he shoulda made sure the window was locked anyways!" Yuffie protested.
"Okay, most of that sounded pretty boring, but feeding owls, bet that was cute. Plus, owls can totally BITE hard so, like, good ninja training! Who's Bobby Corwen? Did you have a baby!?" she asked, slightly astounded since she assumed Mikoto was about her age and not a boring stuffy parent type. And then she looked back when Mikoto asked about her traditions. "My traditions? Well, that's obvious, I mean, my traditions, Wutai traditions... they're... well... they're...." she paused. Okay, this was harder than she thought. "We're a long line of ninja warriors! Trained in ancient ninjitsu techniques nobody else in the world knows! And we make cool weapons nobody else has, like shuriken and katanas! And we have traditions to teach ninjas to be super skilled, like the Pagoda, inhabited by our five greatest masters. Only the BEST ninja can beat 'em all and prove themselves the champion of Wutai!" Yuffie beamed, and then she grinned, gesturing to herself. "Which I totally did, by the way," she boasted.
When Mikoto claimed she wasn't scared, Yuffie glanced at her again, holding her hand a little tighter. "Shut up, you totally are. But it's okay, 'cause the amazing Yuffie is here to keep you safe!" she beamed, although the moment was somewhat ruined when Mikoto said she would eat the Spirit of Halloween.
Yuffie stared for a moment, and then she burst out laughing. "Oh my god! You sounded so serious! You can't eat a ghost!" she laughed as they walked, but she was feeling much better, because she was busy laughing at the conviction with which Mikoto had said that. Deadly serious. Not only did she believe the Spirit of Halloween was real, but she thought she could eat it? "You barely managed the da chao bean!" she teased.
Mikoto pointed out the town wasn't far away. "Oh, good! C'mon, let's get back on the path. It must be safe now!" she said, running ahead, but still holding Mikoto's hand to tow her behind her.
Yuffie Kisaragi Like the black mages, she shall also refer to the baby chocobo by his full name at all times.
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Cedomission? What was that? Perhaps, this human’s ears were malfunctioning. Mikoto honestly couldn’t tell. But whatever this figure did, it did not sound like harsh punishment for non-compliance. He did not shut down and create new vessels with souls. He simply gave warnings. It was a very inefficient way of running things. Still, there must have been a reason behind it. [break][break] Yuffie stated Mikoto’s traditions were pretty boring to which Mikoto had no remark. She knew what she did was quite unremarkable. But it was home and it was stable. They took care of each other in the small village of manufactured living beings. She got to remain herself without having to return her soul and being reborn anew. And the others got to live out their hidden lives peacefully without the risk of further war or misunderstandings with humans. [break][break] “Owls are cute.” Mikoto decided this was so. They were round and their feathers were fluffy, especially the younger ones. They cooed gently and they kept watch with big wide eyes. She missed them, but she was slowly encouraging them near her own village in Headstone forest. “Bobby Corwen came from the egg raised by Black Mage Number 33 and Black Mage Number 111.” She pointed at the egg Yuffie held. “Bobby Corwen scared and chased the other genomes because he liked them.” But the other genomes thought he was a monster and ran. “Bobby Corwen is cute too.” [break][break] Yuffie mentioned things about her traditions. Mikoto heard ‘ninja’, ‘ninjitsu’, ‘ninjas, and ‘ninja’ followed by something like weapons, warriors, champions… [break][break] “That is a lot of ninja.” [break][break] It was Mikoto’s only thought since she did not understand much of the terminology used. “You are a warring people?” They kicked butt, championed, made weapons, and lost fights to Shinra. “What is a pagoda?” Mikoto was already lost. [break][break] Yuffie told Mikoto she was totally scared. Mikoto was fairly certain she wasn’t…Right? [break][break] She supposed it did not matter. Yuffie was laughing at her and the fact she could eat a ghost. She felt her tail droop a little, before she looked into the darkness waiting for the ghost appeared. Words were nothing but air expelled from the lungs. She could show Yuffie she really could eat a ghost. Her tail prickled and then thrashed. “I can too. Ghosts are not beans.” She huffed for a moment, unsure why she was upset. “My predecessor ate hundreds.” All those souls sucked into the Invincible to be processed. “He is the strongest person and is training me.” He blew up a planet! And nearly all time and space! And she was learning from him. [break][break] Then, they were running forward to be back on the path and Mikoto nearly found herself dragged behind Yuffie. Regaining her footing, they found their path ahead of them. And Mikoto was much happier in the light, now that Yuffie was less scared. The streets were quieter now in Torensten, now that most were starting to retire for the night. They edged back to the candy store she saw earlier. [break][break] Now they egged the location right? Mikoto eyed the egg and then the place. “Do we leave the egg at the door?” Seemed to be a polite way to egg someone who gave them candy. A good exchange of resources.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
At least they both agreed that owls were cute. Yuffie nodded as Mikoto said so, agreeing with her immediately. That didn't need any debate. Although what she said next was confusing. So, Bobby Corwen came out of an egg? Maybe monkey girls laid eggs, but she didn't think so. And she knew Black Mages but they only had numbers? Yuffie was confused, and wished that Mikoto would explain things a little better. "Sooo... is Bobby Corwen... an owl?" she tried to guess. That made the most sense. "Wait. You name your owls but not your magicians? Your world is weeeeeeeird," she remarked as she tried to understand. She didn't entirely understand why she even had 'mages' on her world. Yuffie guessed you could say Aerith was something of a mage, she had certainly been rubbish at kicking butt the traditional way, but they could all use magic with the right materia. Maybe it was different on Mikoto's world? A world without materia. It was enough to make Yuffie shiver.
She asked more about Wutai, and Yuffie was pleased to talk about THAT, at least. "Sure, loadsa ninjas! I mean, we did other stuff too, but all our warriors were ninjas. Like me!" she explained cheerfully. Her expression darkened a little however, when Mikoto asked if they were a warring people. "We didn't used to be. Being ninjas, it wasn't about beating up like, other countries. It was about... y'know, being kick butt. Learning to master your abilities. It was part of our culture. But when Shinra came, we had to fight. They didn't understand our ways. Just 'cause we liked to live without big screens and smelly cars n' stuff, they thought we were savages. They thought they could just crush us. An' we might have lost that war, but we proved 'em wrong. We made Shinra hurt. An' those of us who were true ninja, we never gave in. We kept fightin' in secret. And now, Shinra's no more, and Wutai is free again. So, I guess, it took years, but we won in the end. Jus' goes to show, never mess with a ninja!" Yuffie explained, her voice picking up enthusiasm as she explained about her victory.
"But it means the world I grew up in, most of my life, my culture was a joke. Shinra used to use us as a tourist spot, like, 'oh, come and see the silly ninja', like we were some kinda zoo. But I proved 'em wrong in the end! Shinra won't ever mess with me again!" she added.
She laughed a little when Mikoto asked her what a Pagoda was. "A pagoda is a tower, dummy. It's a tower of Wutai design. You should see 'em. No stupid elevators or metal or electricity making smoke and stink and pollution. Just a proper tower, all stone and wood. But The Pagoda was a special place. It was the centre of Wutai's capital city. It was where our greatest masters resided. Each floor was home to a chosen master, the very best that Wutai had to offer. It was said that when the true Descendant of Shinobi was ready, they would prove themselves by defeating all five of the masters and fight their way up the tower, and once they did, they were ready to become the Pagoda's new champion. That way, the champion of the Pagoda was also always Wutai's greatest warrior. An' only the true warriors of the Pagoda knew who was at the top. Their identity was a secret. So imagine my surprise when it turned out to my Dad! I mean, he was the boss of Wutai, but to realise he was also our best warrior, even though he's the one who had surrendered to Shinra!? TOTAL surprise. Anyway, I had to still prove myself and kick his butt. Which I did!"
"But I thought the tradition was dumb. I mean, why be Wutai's best warrior if all you're gonna do is sit in some cooped up ol' tower? Especially when there were bad guys to beat! An' my Dad, I guess, he kinda agreed. An' I think we started to understand each other a bit. See, he thought leading Wutai into war against Shinra is what had led so many of our people to die. That just 'cause you had the strength to fight, it didn't mean you HAD to, and there was a better way to keep people safe. But he saw that sometimes you HAD to fight, jus'... in a different way. So... he sent me as our best warrior to help overthrow Shinra and save the world. Which I totally did, by the way. No biggie," she finished explaining with a grin, as they began to get back to town. She paused, and sighed slightly, however. The thoughts of her Dad and Wutai made her realise that she might never get back there. Wutai was the one thing that she had done everything for. She had always fought for. And she had always been, deep down. A ninja from Wutai. It was her home. Her reason for fighting.
Without Wutai, what was she? And worse than that, without her Dad... She realised how much she missed him. All those times she'd run away from him or yelled at him, and now she might never see him again, she really did, truly, miss him.
Fortunately, Mikoto's protests about ghosts snapped her out of her thoughts, and she looked over at her. "You can not eat ghosts! Have you ever eaten a ghost? I bet you haven't," Yuffie replied. "Then again... you CAN beat up ghosts... so if you can beat 'em up, maybe you CAN eat 'em. Like you can beat up a monster, and I guess you could cook and eat it if you wanted to, so, maybe you can eat ghosts. It's kinda super weird though," Yuffie remarked. "Nu uh, bet I'm stronger than some fatso who eats ghosts!" Yuffie protested, trying to imagine this person who ate ghosts and then claimed they were strong. "Is like, ghost stew his speciality or something? Are you getting trained by a chef?" she teased.
"What? No! We don't just, PUT the egg there. We throw it at 'em! Smash it all over their shop an' show 'em not to mess with us!" Yuffie grinned. "C'mon. Do you wanna throw it?" she offered, grinning.
Lol. All that work and now Mikoto doesn't want to throw it. Yuffie Kisaragi
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Bobby Corwen an owl? Mikoto supposed she could see the thought process to this.Mikoto gently shook her head no. “No. Bobby Corwen is a chocobo.” The black mages held a chocobo farm to raise these cute creatures. Mikoto did not quite understand why, but she supposed the creatures were interesting to have around. They could also pull plows and be useful. Though she frowned at Yuffie's assertion of the magicians having numbers? Mikoto did not think it was weird. Names did not matter on Terra. But someone’s designation seemed of great importance here. [break][break] Mikoto listened to Yuffie’s explanation about ninjas, but a soft frown touched her lips. It was more unclear to her. It was not about beating up but more about kicking butt? What did that mean? Were they not equivalent? Was there some nuance in language she was not picking up on? But it seemed her people endured over a threat, as was typical of normal courses of life. There would always be two different groups that struggled for dominance and resources. Mikoto could only nod her understanding. [break][break] Mikoto’s tail bristled at being called a dummy. It was not her fault that humans had so many made up words that meant the same thing. Though, she did not put up a fuss as she listened further to the explanation of a pagoda. Unfortunately, all she could think of was human building a makeshift shelter with found sticks and rocks. She supposed that such a structure would not hold multiple floors. However, it did not quite sound like anything she saw in Torensten either - none of them held warriors or obstacle courses. Maybe one day she would just have to see a pagoda for herself. [break][break] If the tradition was not to her liking, then why did she do it? Did she simply listen to her dad because he was her master? She had to get his agreement to go out and fight against Shinra? Much like Mikoto had to patiently wait until Garland told her it was her turn to take on Gaia? There was a deep silence when Yuffie was done. Mikoto had simply listened with patience. [break][break] Though, Mikoto felt her tail lash behind her at the debate of ghosts. If ANYONE was an expert on departed souls, it was certainly genomes. Their entire existence revolved around it. And maybe Mikoto HADN’T eaten one, but she was made to absorb and house them as a living vessel. “Cook a ghost?” Mikoto’s face dropped in thought at that. “You eat them raw.” No prep was needed. “If the soul is no good, you steam it and put it back in the atmosphere.” Like with the Iifa tree. Her tail was not wagging thoughtfully. “You don’t eat it then. Gaians absorbed their own steamed souls. Their biology did not handle that well.” In fact, it turned them into monster. How interesting.
[break][break] Mikoto huffed slightly. “He is not fat.” Kuja was the most beautiful genome she met. He also did not look like any of the genomes she knew at all. “He found a reservoir of collected souls.” The Invincible was able to collect souls and hold on to them to assist in the weakening of the crystal. “It gave the benefits of increased power.” She said thoughtfully. “I know a chef. I don’t know if it cooks souls.” Then again the Qu race seemed willing to eat anything, why not souls. [break][break] She looked at the chocobo egg that Yuffie held, then looked at the door. She tilted her head to the side. Did she want to throw it? It seemed like a lot of effort for no reward. “No.” But it looked like Yuffie was excited to.
