[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto stared blankly at her as she ranted about cuteness and percentages. How did someone calculate the percentages of ‘cute’? She squinted at Yuffie, trying to determine what made her more ‘cute’. It must have been because she was a human. Still, she did not think Yuffie was cute, necessarily. Just the moogle face on her cloak - with the button eyes and fluffy pom.
Though, it suddenly seemed Yuffie was unimpressed with Mikoto’s ghost stories. So human’s wanted ghosts to be scary? They refused to listen to anything otherwise? What odd creatures. They must want to be terrified of their own essence. Though Mikoto wondered if Yuffie’s story did merit some truth. The ghosts in Headstone Forest sometimes liked to sneak around and snatch people. Though Mikoto was sure it was because humans kept intruding into their territory and making them upset, especially when they tried to push the spirits back into nothingness. “I would like to see. Let’s go to Headstone Forest for ‘butt kicking’ and ‘Trick or Treating’.” She wanted to see this spirit cannibal and see how a human fought ghosts. To her knowledge so far, she had yet to see one be able to take on a ghost. On Gaia, didn’t they go crazy and transform if they made contact with the byproduct of their own spiritual essence? [break][break] It sounded to MIkoto that these ‘Great Ninjas’ had quite the ability. [break][break] They finally padded to a stop in front of the store and Yuffie told her to be loud. That she needed to ‘share’. Mikoto frowned at that. This was meant for her predecessor. But, Mikoto supposed she could share the treats that she knew he would not enjoy. “OK, Great Ninja Yuffie.” Mikoto supposed she had the time to say the whole thing. The rest of the names seemed too many for one person. "My name is Mikoto." Names were really important here, weren't they? She was starting to get used to providing them. [break][break] She turned to enter through the door. She could smell the sweets as it filled the store. She turned to look at the shop keeper. [break][break] There was simply a moment they stared at each other. Mikoto merely stated “Trick or Treat…?” Her tail swished curiously behind her as she held out her hands. As she waited, her eyes trailed back to look at Yuffie. Be loud. She tried again. “TRICK or TREAT.” Though it was only a couple notches up on the soundbar of her vocal cords. That was loud right? [break][break] It must have been. The shopkeeper smiled at her. He gave Mikoto two additional pieces of chocolate, neatly wrapped in tiny packages from a bowl behind the counter. Mikoto looked down into her hands, quite content. But what did she do after? She looked up at the shopkeeper and simply stared, perhaps for further instructions. [break][break] The shopkeeper was not sure what else to do. Her hands were not out to give her more. “Go on now.” He said curiously to shoo her out.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie paused with the type of pause that would be familiar to anybody who had listened to Yuffie talk absolute nonsense for longer than five minutes. It was the pause of somebody who had to make up the next lie to keep their original lie going. She hesitated for only a moment, and then said quickly; "Well, we can't! 'cause... the ghost only comes out at midnight, so if we go there NOW, he won't even be there," Yuffie explained quickly. "Besides, we still gotta egg that jerk's shop. If we don't do that first, the Spirit of Halloween will come and get you! We can't let it do that," she added, glad to have made up an excuse. Yeah, that sounded logical, right? It all made sense. Good.
She let Mikoto head off, smiling proudly at being called a 'Great Ninja'. Yep, Yuffie could definitely work with this. Mitoko or whatever her name was. Eh, that was probably it. Close enough. She waited for a moment, watching as the girl disappeared off to the shop, and impatiently tapped her foot. The girl didn't emerge after a while, so Yuffie marched on over. Ugh, did she have to do EVERYTHING?
She ran back towards the shop. "Hey! Mokoto! You got the candy! C'mon! Let's gooooo!" she beckoned for Mikoto to follow her, before dashing off around the side of the building and gesturing for Mikoto to keep up.
She turned to inspect the haul. "Hey! He gave you two bits but only gave me one bit! What've you got that I ain't, huh!?" Yuffie snapped angrily. "That's it! We're gonna... DOUBLE egg his shop now!" she vowed dramatically, pointing to the sky. "But first..." Yuffie grabbed the second bit of candy, and shoved it in her mouth, because she had been very clear about the rules on sharing, right? (The rules were, of course, anything Mikoto got she had to share with Yuffie, and anything Yuffie got she'd have to also share with Yuffie. Totally fair, right?). "Right! C'mon! To the chocobo farm!"
[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto stared blankly at Yuffie as the girl froze in place for a few seconds. Then there was a quick explanation. Only at midnight? When was that? Another human concept of flowing time. It must be when the light was gone from the sky. She wished to see this Spirit of Halloween even more. Mikoto will stay awake until midnight. She doubted any amount of egging would actually matter to a spirit bent on devouring. And what would it do if it did get either of them? Ogle them to death with its empathic projection? Or was it like the Gaian’s own soul refuse which turned them into twisted monsters? [break][break] Hmm…the latter seemed a good reason for humans to fear it. [break][break] Seeing nothing productive to be gleaned from further conversation, Mikoto said nothing more on the matter. [break][break] And now, here she was staring at an unnerved shopkeep who was unsure what he should do. Her stare seemed too deep and too long underneath her cute moogle hood. Just when he was about to pull out another treat to give to her. The bell at the store’s entrance rang out. He turned his head to give Yuffie that unamused look. [break][break] Mikoto instantly understood Yuffie’s commands. She promptly turned without further discussion and walked out stiffly. For a moment, she thought Yuffie had disappeared. Then, out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the flutter of the great ninja’s cloak. She dashed after her around the corner. [break][break] She nearly ran into Yuffie as she came to a sudden dead halt. Yuffie inspected Mikoto’s haul, upset that Mikoto was able to get more than her. Mikoto was not sure why she obtained more, but she offered a hypothesis, “I said ‘Trick or Treat’ twice.” If she said more than once did that mean she would get more. Though she was quick to grab one of Mikoto’s treats. Mikoto’s tail fluffed and she quickly checked to make sure the one she needed was still in there. It was still the more bitter of the flavors. She eased a bit, despite a slight tremor in her hands. Her eyes were serious as she looked at Yuffie. [break][break] “We share.” That was what was agreed to. “But I pick…” She looked back down at the bag. It was for him. He had not left his room in three days. And he was suffering from something she didn’t understand. She gripped the bag a little tighter in her hands. “You can have the sweet ones. I need the other type to make him feel better.” [break][break] But, it seemed Yuffie was already on her way to the Chocobo farm. Without a plan on how to carry such a large egg. Well. Yuffie would watch to see what solution the Great Ninja could come up with it. Mikoto showed her the path to the Chocobo farm. She kept to the backstreets, preferring the low rooftops when available. [break][break] Within minutes they were near the outskirts of Torensten and a dirt path led to the chocobo farm. A large wooden fence was up followed by stables and roaming chocobos. She came up to the fence and looked about. The chocobos seemed startled by the visitors. “Now we wait for a chocobo to lay an egg.” Mikoto said with satisfaction. Surely it would not take long. "Transport the chocobo to the store and wait for an egg?" Then the store would have one egg.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie happily shovelled the sweet piece of candy into her mouth even as Mikoto instructed her on which one to take. Which she thought needed work. If she was going to be Mikoto's mentor, she didn't want questions about what kind of candy she got to eat! She supposed maybe she should be less bossy. That was meant to be the lesson she'd learned working with Cloud and everybody. Sometimes, she realised she didn't quite treat all the people she met in this strange new reality as, well, people. Because she wasn't still convinced she knew what was going on. And without a Wutai to fight for, she was more than happy to cause chaos and have fun. It reminded her of being a kid again.
But MAYBE she should be a TINY bit nicer to Mikoto. Or at least, let her get away with that whole candy thing.
"Sure! Okay. He can have the sour ones. The sweet ones are best anyway!" she said cheerfully. And then she paused. "Waaaaait, who's he? Do you have a boyfriend, Mikoto? You gotta tell me if you do. That's like, a friend rule, and we're total friends now," she said with a smile. Somehow she couldn't imagine Mikoto having a boyfriend, but, well, stranger things happened, right? "Oh! I know! If you really wanna make him happy, you should give him some Da-Chao beans!" Yuffie fished in her pocket, and produced some. "They're totally the best!" Okay, maybe she was still gonna be a LITTLE mischievous to Mikoto.
___
Once they arrived at the Chocobo Farm, Mikoto laid out her strategy. "Okay, that's totally a good plan. Steal the thing that makes the thing instead of the thing itself. It'd be like stealing the materia factory instead of materia. Then you can have as much materia as you want! And, if a materia factory was a real thing, I'd totally be on board with that!" Even Yuffie knew that, sadly, they were not. Well, she didn't think they were. Shinra developed new materia beneath their HQ, so maybe they were? Note to self: Check if materia factories exist when you get home. "But, it's probably harder than we have time for. So, let's find where they keep the eggs instead! They gotta keep 'em around here somewhere. Then we just steal a bunch! C'mon!" Yuffie gestured for Mikoto to follow her.
"Now, we gotta be sneaky. Do you know how to be sneaky? You gotta crouch, and walk slowly, like this," Yuffie demonstrated, hunching over and sneaking towards the nearest barn, where she hoped the eggs would be. "And remember, don't speak too loudly," Yuffie whispered, although a Yuffie whisper was still loud. "Also if you see a rat don't scream because otherwise your teammate will never let you live it down even if you're technically the boss," she added afterwards, with a sigh and a roll of her eyes.
[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto’s tail swished in contentment as Yuffie agreed to only take the sweet candy. Mikoto doubted Kuja liked sour, but he seemed to like it much less sweet. Now that she thought about it, Mikoto didn’t think she had tried anything sour before. What sensation was that? [break][break] She was drawn out of the thought by Yuffie ecstatically questioning her. Mikoto’s head tilted to the side as she tried to understand what Yuffie was asking. Boy friend? Like a friend who was designated male? He was designated male by Garland. And friends shared resources, which she supposed they did. Still, it felt easier to say, “He is my prototype.” She was certain of that. Her tail swished as she relaxed into her answer. [break][break] Her eyes widened at this supposed bean. “Da-Chao beans?” She held out her hands, accepting Yuffie’s snackerfice. It seemed like a simple bean. “What do I do with it?” Did he eat it? Did he pot it to grow? Did it have some sort of happy chemical in it? [break][break] — [break][break]
Yuffie nodded as Mikoto repeated the plan. Perhaps, she needed to say it to herself in order to retain it? Seemed necessary for this being to talk a lot… “Materia?” Mikoto said interestedly. Hojo had mentioned it to her. She perked up in interest of it. She wanted to acquire some for her own reasons. Hardened magic that seemed like echoing whispers. [break][break] First, however, the current directive. She followed behind Yuffie. Yes, she knew how to be sneaky. How else did she avoid problems? She simply stared as Yuffie overly exaggerated her hunching. Didn’t that leave one unbalanced? Still, Mikoto lightly padded behind her as she tried to keep her body close to stay close to the darker areas. Even more so, she tried to keep her body close to the buildings. Mikoto also said nothing, which was infinitely better than whispering. [break][break] They neared the pens where the chocobos rested quietly in the barn area. Then, in a separate wooden crate, chocobo eggs were being kept warm with an incubator light. They came in different shapes and sizes. Even their shades were different - ivory with spots. Mikoto eyed the sleeping chocobos before turning to the eggs. Silently, she tiptoed to the crate so as not to disturb the resting chocobos. It was clear they would only be able to take one at a time. They were not palm size. They were pretty decently at least a foot tall. Mikoto grabbed the smallest one. Then decided she had arms enough for one more. She tiptoed back and handed one to Yuffie. That’s all they needed right? [break][break] Still…it seemed like taking a chocobo to lay eggs in front of the shop was much easier…

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
It was, of course, impossible for Yuffie to make a miscalculation. Her plan was flawless and perfect in every way. But, if there was an error, which, again, just to stress, could not possibly be any fault of Yuffie's, it was that the chocobo eggs were slightly bigger than she had planned. Then again, she routinely threw a shuriken the size of her head at bad guys, she was sure that she could hurl an egg like that.
"Good work, minion!" Yuffie whispered proudly. "Uh, I mean, Mikoto," she added quickly. And then she paused, considering the eggs. "Okay, so, uh, obviously, I know the answer to this, but just to check that YOU know, these eggs? Are they the ones with the babies in, or the ones for people to eat? 'cause I don't wanna go throwing eggs with babies in at a building. I mean, that's gross and not funny anymore. We need the eating eggs, not the baby eggs," she explained, still in her 'whisper', which was, well, quieter than usual Yuffie. Although a freight train was quieter than usual Yuffie.
"Answer correctly and you can have a Da-Chao bean to eat too!" Which would be win win, since Mikoto clearly didn't know what they were, and that'd allow her to see what happened when the girl tried one. That was always fun to see!
[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto’s tail swished contentedly at being told she did good work. She ignored being called a minion. She was most certainly not beneath Yuffie. After all, she was built to be superior to typical beings to ensure the survival of her people. Of course, it would not be worth her time to bring it up to someone who would not begin to comprehend that. Instead, her eyes seemed to sparkle with the pride watched by her swaying tail. [break][break] She turned to Yuffie to take in the new question. Then she looked at the chocobo eggs. The Black Mages were the ones who harbored the interest in raising chocobos. Mikoto had to keep the other genomes safe from Bobby Corwen, and the chicks to follow. But as for determining whether or not the soul was attached to a vessel inside the egg…well. Mikoto had a method. “I can determine which have a child.” She held her hand out over them and closed her eyes. [break][break] Then, she used her other senses. The one that could sense and communicate with the soul. A soft gentle wind blew as she reached her senses to each egg. She sensed no bluish thrum of life in either of them. She opened her eyes again. “The eggs are infertile.” [break][break] She held out a hand for a bean. Mikoto knew she was correct. [break][break] Then, one of the chocobos seemed to stir in their sleep and upon seeing strangers panicked. “KWEH!” Mikoto’s tail puffed and she stiffened in surprise. The chocobo’s reaction awakened its friends and they began to make all kind of ruckus. Then there was a sudden light that was lit on the porch. [break][break] Mikoto did not wait, she ran for the road. Easier to exit the situation than deal with it.

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Okay, so maybe the way Mikoto could apparently sense which eggs had life in and which ones didn't was a liiiiiittle creepy. Yuffie had thought maybe she could tell by the weight or something, not some kinda creepy sensing powers, but at least she had done it. Yuffie nodded, and handed over a da-chao bean with a grin (mostly at anticipation of Mikoto's reaction to trying to eat it of course). "There you are, you earned it!" she beamed.
However, the sense of victory was short lived, as the chocobo seemed to wake up and notice them. "Nonono, quuuuuieeeet, that's a good chocobo...." Yuffie began to say, but it was too late and it let out a big, loud, kweh!. Yuffie winced, and saw as the light came on in the farmhouse. She turned to Mikoto. "RU-" she began to say, but saw that Mikoto was already doing that. Yuffie paused, impressed, and then turned to follow.
She skidded to a stop, ran back, grabbed the egg, and gave a quick smile and a laugh at the chocobo, and raced off after Mikoto. "Hey! You!" came a voice, but Yuffie just ran faster, leaping the low fence and skidding onto the road, egg in her hand. She wasn't far behind Mikoto when it was clear that they were safely into the darkness, and they could stop running.
"Okay, stop, stop," Yuffie said, a little breathlessly, partly because she had been running, and partly because she was laughing. She continued to laugh, almost doubled over as she held the egg. "Ohmigod! That was so close! That was hilarious!" she said, laughing so much she had to stop to wipe a tear from her eye; no easy feat without dropping the egg. "Hey! I can't believe you just ran off without me!" she said, for a moment sounding serious. And then she laughed again. "We'll make a ninja out of you yet! That was brilliant!" she beamed, before laughing again.
"Okay, c'mon! Let's go back to the shop and throw this sucker!" she said with a beaming smile, gesturing to the big egg in her arms.
[attr=class, bulk] Mikoto was light on her feet and had no issue clearing the fence between her and the road. In fact, she did not even touch it at all. She simply vaulted over it and landed lightly on the other side. She could hear the panicking chocobos and the shouts of the angry farmer. It was very alarming in the quiet night. [break][break] Then, as Mikoto looked about her to gain her bearing, she made a run for the shadowy parts of the treeline along the side of the road. Soon, Yuffie hopped the fence and came barreling for her. She must have seen Mikoto’s tail peaking out - the only part of her that betrayed her surprise at the event. Her heart rate began to drop as she took slow, deep breaths to reach. [break][break] Blankly, she stared at Yuffie who was laughing and enjoying their near call with trouble. She tilted her head to the side, seeing that the other girl had been successful at retrieving an egg. Mikoto looked down at her own hands and realized she had no egg. However, what she did have tightly squeezed into her palm was the da-chao bean. [break][break] She popped it in her mouth as Yuffie laughed, talked, and tried to catch her breath all at the same time. Her teeth caught the hard bean, which surprised the genome. Her brow twitched in annoyance as she bit down with more force. The hard exterior didn’t seem to budge at first, but then finally gave into its softer texture with Mikoto’s pure determination. She shot Yuffie an unimpressed look at the effort it took to eat the bean, and left her teeth feeling sore. [break][break] For a moment, she wondered if she should trick Yuffie. She was displeased with the treat. [break][break] Then, she softened at Yuffie’s remarks and compliments. “What else is needed to qualify?” What did it take to be this ninja? Then, she gave Yuffie a nod. “The direction back…” She stated simply as she turned to walk through the woods, instead of on the road. That farmer could be more vigilant now. There were big spooky owls that had their eyes glow in the moonlight that looked down at them. It felt nostalgic to Mikoto. They were the animal guardians for her old home. [break][break] Then there was the rustling of the bushes. The chill of the wind. A racoon ran across their path. Mikoto watched them curiously. “How will you throw it…?” By hand seemed difficult? “Sling? Catapult?”

"Get ready , ZEPHRON, for YUFFIE!"
The Great Ninja Yuffie!
Yuffie guffawed as she saw Mikoto struggle to eat the bean, clearly amused by her own little practical joke. But then her laugher broke into a genuine smile as Mikoto persisted and managed to bite down through the bean anyway. Yuffie looked genuinely surprised, and more than a little touched. "Hey! You actually ate it!" she beamed. And then, just to demonstrate, she threw a bean into her own mouth, and crunched down on it, with no real problem. "You know, usually only Wutaians actually can eat 'em..." She paused, and she trailed off a moment. The memory of Sonon flickered through her mind, of fighting alongside him, of feeling so alone in Midgar, so far from home, and then knowing she had someone from home by her side. Mikoto was definitely not from Wutai. In fact, Yuffie had no idea where she was from. Some kind of weird monkey girl factory she figured. But, somehow, her eating that bean reminded her of not being entirely alone. A whole new world. And she had a friend who could still eat da-chao beans. She guessed someone was looking out for her. "That was great! You want another one?" she asked cheerfully, deciding to embrace the newfound friendship, holding out another bean.
Mikoto asked what it took to be a ninja, and Yuffie paused, hips cocked to the side, looking thoughtful. "Well, first of all, you gotta eat da-chao beans. Second, it helps if you're super cute, like me! You're pretty cute, so that's probably alright. But also you gotta be super badass!" Yuffie paused to throw several quick jabs to show off how super tough and cool she was. "You gotta be real good at sneaking, even if your teacher gives you an F and says you failed and there was that one time you got scared of a mouse and gave your position away because let's be real do those even count? And it's not MY fault that one time I tripped into a bunch of Shinra guards..." She trailed off. "You gotta master your own super cool introduction, of course. Like mine!" she added. "And finally, you gotta pledge allegiance to the leader of the Wutai Clan of Ninjas, who is the one ninja who conquered the Pagoda and defeated all the masters. And hey, that's me!" she beamed.
Yuffie followed behind Mikoto as they went into the darkened woods. It was almost oppressive here, the darkness. She could hear an owl hoot, and felt like eyes were watching her everywhere. She nearly jumped out of her skin when the raccoon zipped across in front of them, and let out a small shriek. "Uhhh, m-maybe we should go back to the road," she said as she looked at the wind rustling the bushes. She couldn't see beyond them. She couldn't see anything. She gulped uneasily. She hated the dark. Ever since... that time in Shinra basement. That... strange... man... The darkness coming for her. Enveloping her. Taking Sonon. "Uh, I mean, obviously, I'm not scared. I'm not scared of ANYTHING. But, uh, I bet you're scared of the dark right, so, maybe, uh, we'd be better.... back on the road..." Yuffie said nervously.
"Uh, hey, we'll work that out when we get there! Let's just get outta these woods first, yeah?" Yuffie said, noticeably picking up her pace and sounding particularly afraid.
