Gwyn stood in the forest clearing. The trees encircling him seemed to writhe and move in his periphery, though upon looking at them they were no more than the normal flora he had grown up around. Save for the fact they had a strange, corkscrew like shape and many of them seemed to have strange, runic carvings on them. [break][break] Never having a talent for magic, Gwyn had instead always stayed away from it, not wanting to get himself into any sort of magical malfeasance or trap. Still, he could feel the magic of this place. Almost like humidity on a hot, damp day. It permeated the air, weighed on his shoulders, and clung to him like dew. He felt it trying to worm its way inside him, and in a panic called upon the Dark Blade and used the darkness to weave a barrier around himself. His father had always taught them that Dark Knights were great at defending against magic, as the Darkness could dampen its effects to a certain degree. He didn’t know what he was facing, but he hoped it would be enough to keep whatever persistent magic this forest seemed to emulate at bay long enough for him to find his way out and back to...to where? He was going somewhere, he was certain...a city? No! A mountain. Yes. Mount Ordeals. Why? There was something there, wasn’t it; something waiting for him- something he needed. [break][break] Movement from within the trees caught his attention, a human form clad in dark armor and emanating a dark aura. There was something familiar about him. It pulled at Gwyn, drawing him towards it. [break][break] “Rhys!” He called out, surprised at the sound of the name. Rhys? Who was that? Someone important. His brother! Right! He sought Mount Ordeals to find his brother, Rhys, and help him purge the darkness that had consumed him. Without another thought Gwyn stepped into the treeline, going after the dark form he had seen. “Rhys! Wait! I’m here! I’ll help you!” [break][break] The form didn’t respond, instead moving away from Gwyn, keeping just enough trees between the two of them so Gwyn couldn’t clearly see him, but he knew it was Rhys. It had to be.

Enter Mikoto, a true neutral genome child. @moogle
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Something pulled her away from her ghost village. The abandoned one she was slowly cleaning up and making her own. It reminded her of the small isolated villages that she had grown used to. Small and quiet with the ethereal, spiritual scent of Bran Bal. Yet, very much obscured and hidden in the woods outside the touch of humanity. Well mostly, except for the few stray humans that seemed to fall off the beaten path. [break][break] Though she knew not why those gentle reminders of the past drove her to act as she did in the woods. [break][break] And still, something pulled her away from the renovations. [break][break] A stream of beautiful light filled the trees in the far distance illuminating golden pollen. The sight was followed up by the soft alluring scent of sandalwood and honey. The path opened up for her and she found a teal ribbon. One that was usually worn by Zidane at the neck of his outfit. A glimmer of hope touched in her heart. She continued down the path and there was an arch of branches. It felt like a threshold like the one’s Garland made. She felt one of those rare hesitations in her. [break][break] Had Garland come here? Had he taken Zidane? Hadn’t Garland told her that if Zidane failed to remember his true purpose and remain true...he would… [break][break] She felt a frown touch her face and she touched the ribbon to her lips in sudden sorrow. She was a replacement. A tool. Could she really exist outside Bran Bal? [break][break] Zidane and Kuja gave her hope that perhaps she could... [break][break] They gave her an opportunity to try. [break][break] She took a few courageous steps forward and passed through the threshold. No Garland was to be seen. Inside was a small grotto with a throne-like chair made of organic material. Upon it, Zidane sat with that big grin he always kept on his face. His hand held out to her to return the ribbon or to take her hand. She was not sure. [break][break] Silently, she reached out to pass him the ribbon. [break][break] Then suddenly the shadows were back again. Zidane’s face contorted and his eyes lit red. Spider-like appendages broke from his back and he had ferocious teeth as his jaw contorted to shape the true form of the monster before her. It gave a roaring hiss. [break][break] Mikoto fluffed in surprise and dropped the ribbon. The sudden darkness and hostility was enough to even shake the generally emotionless genome. She found herself hopping back to avoid swipe of its appendages. She took to the branches hoping that its size would not allow it the agility she had. [break][break] She suddenly fled through the treetops, not bothering to look back. She did not need to see what she could hear. She was fast, but it seemed it could still sense her trail. [break][break] It was then she heard one of the troublesome people wandering the woods. She felt her chest heave softly as she came to a stop to stare down at him from the trees. Her eyes wide and vacant as she emotionlessly stared down at him. She stood up tall on the branch, her hand gently along the base of the tree. Her other hand down at her side as her tail snaked behind her for balance. “There is no one else here.” Mikoto couldn’t see what the man was chasing, but she bluntly stated the obvious. [break][break] Would the thing chasing her catch him instead? Would it leave her alone then? “The woods will take you as they do the others.” Then, Mikoto would tend to him as she had grown fond of doing for the other lost souls here. Maybe she would learn his story then. The guide part of her felt he deserved the warning, though it was repeated on all the warning signs all over the woods. [break][break] The woods were cruel and hostile. It was another reminder of the home she once had. Another reason she could not easily give it up.
A small voice from the treetops shook Gywn, so lost in his own thoughts and focused as he was on pursuing the thing in the trees: like a small, errant breeze popping a carefully formed bubble. Glancing up and searching among the leaves and branches bathed in soft, golden sunlight, he noticed there a small form. A child? He blinked a few times, trying to determine if what he saw was nothing more than a frantic hallucination or some forlorn ghost, though then the form remained solid and firm atop the branch he realized that it was, in-fact, real. Real enough so that when he looked away, back into the dark mass of trees that encroached upon him to see where the form he was chasing had gone to and looked back, it was still there. It was then Gwyn realized perhaps a minute or two had passed without him acknowledging the child in any meaningful way. [break][break] "Where am I?" The question took him by surprise. Certainly he had, in some deep part of his subconscious, realized he was no longer in the forest near Mount Ordeals, but now that he had given those thoughts a voice it had become all the more real to him. There was a small surge of panic that swept through him, though he held it at bay, taking a deep breath and looking back up at the child in the trees. "I seem to be more than a little lost...and I do not recognize this place at all," he added, hoping to make his question seem a little less insane. [break][break] Movement in the trees beyond the newcomer caught Gwyn's attention. This was altogether different than the figure he had been chasing moments earlier, as it seemed to have actual weight behind it. From the noises it made as it moved through the dense woods, Gwyn could tell it had a purpose. His helm-hidden eyes flickered to the child then back to the trees. At any moment he expected something large to burst forth from the shadows of the trees, something terrible and gashing and hunting for flesh. Reaching over his shoulder and gripping the handle of his sword, he prepared himself, ready to fight. [break][break] "Perhaps we should discuss this a bit later...something is coming." His voice was steely and hard, his attention now focused on the twisting and impossible shadows that danced around the shafts of golden light than managed to filter through the treetops, though ultimately did nothing for illuminating the forest as a whole. Almost as if the forest itself was loath to let it's mysteries be brought to light. Once again, among the trees, he saw it. The shadow and shape he had been chasing. For a moment he loosened the grip on his sword, ready to reach out a hand to it, before he noticed it was moving towards them. [break][break] Since arriving here, Gwyn's target had done nothing but move away from him; the small change was enough for him to realize something was different. As it approached the shape morphed, no longer the armored humanoid he had been chasing previously now much more monstrous. A horrifying hissing noise preceded it, as several long, spindly appendages appeared from the form at seemingly random places, pushing it forward in a skin-crawling skitter. [break][break] Bringing his sword to the ready, Gwyn took a breath and set his stance. "Hey, you, up in the trees, you don't seem scared of this place, so I won't bother telling you to run and hide. Just promise me you'll be able to get away if you need to." Gwyn called to the kid, not risking a glace as he didn't want to take eyes off the approaching threat. Taking another deep breath the swordsman reached within himself again, opening a path for the dark of the blade to flow into him. As the eldritch power flowed through his body, the air seemed to distort and shimmer, taking on a black and purple shade. He was ready. Though he wasn't sure for what. To fight? To die? [break][break] He was about to find out.
[attr=class,bulk] He looked about for her and blinked several times, as if unaware of his very surroundings. She watched as he looked this way and that, before finally glancing up at her. She stared back unblinkingly at him, her eyes half-lidded as she looked down at him. He really was clueless, wasn’t he? He didn’t even know where he was. Perhaps...he woke up here like she did at that strange grassy place full of arches. [break][break] Hmm… [break][break] “Headstone Forest.” She said emotionless and to the point of his question where he was. He claimed he was lost. Well that was obvious. If he woke up here, then he simply had not seen all the warning signs. Perhaps she should show him the path out after all? [break][break] But the large creature was already barreling through the trees. She could hear the snapping of dead wood and that musk of corrupted spirit and wood as it drove closer to them. She quickly made her way across the tree branches to make way for it. Then the genome simply watched. [break][break] The human-spider hybrid burst out of the trees with a terrible screech. It had deformed itself into a bigger form to boulder its way to them and perhaps more easily crush its opponents. It now had the thorax and legs of a spider, but it had - from head to torso - a humanoid form attached to it. Its jaw was disjointed and its venom dripped from it. Mikoto didn’t suggest that she was the one it tailed and that she knew it was coming. [break][break] Suddenly the metaphysical pull for her to come to it was upon her again. Her eyes narrowed this time at the thing that took the form of her deformed brother. It’s form did not bother her. It reminded her of the Terran guardians and their half animalistic-half humanoid forms. No, it should not be able to pull her to it without having something of Terra upon it. [break][break] The man seemed concerned for her, even as he prepared to fight. Why? He did not know her. It was interesting to see he wielded the darkness differently than Nero. His was more defensive and controlled, rather than Nero’s wild offensive. [break][break] The thing then turned its eyes upon her and its spidery limbs darted out to crash into her branch. She already darted to the next branch to avoid the blow. But it spit a web at her that caught her ankle this time. She now struggled to free her foot from it. Thankfully, the spider aberration turned and saw Gwyn threatening it with his own Eldritch power. It screeched at him, shooting an acid spittle at him. Then, it lunged at the dark knight, hoping to crush him with its heavy weight.
The monster turned its attention to Gwyn, and with a frightening gambit, decided to launch itself at him in what seemed to be an attempt to crush him with it's weight. How many spiders and bugs had he himself crushed underfoot, either on purpose of accident, throughout his life? Ironic now that such a shadow loomed over him, threatening the same fate he had consigned to so many without a second thought. Knowing he wasn't fast enough to dodge out of the way, Gwyn didn't even move, instead setting his stance and leaning into his shoulder, ready to take the attack stubbornly, though not without help. [break][break] Calling upon the darkness of the blade, he felt the power course through him, pulling at the edges of his mind while it simultaneously strengthened him and likewise tried to take control of him. For now it was easy enough to shut out, ignoring the sensation for now, Gwyn directed the darkness to weave and stitch across his muscles and skin, reinforcing him: hopefully enough to withstand the weight of the monster. [break][break] The impact was harder than Gwyn anticipated, and the monster was much heavier than it appeared. If it hadn't been for the dark blade, there wasn't a doubt that Gwyn would have been crushed beneath it. Still, his muscles and bones screamed in pain as he kept his stance and pressed his shoulder and arm into the body of the creature. Writhing and squirming, the monster pressed down into the Dark Knight, trying to crush him, its long, spindly legs digging into the ground around them to anchor itself. [break][break] Pressing against the monster with all his strength, Gwyn pushed it off of him, if only by a few inches, but that was all he needed to bring his sword arm up and around. Slashing out to the side with the heavy sword, he easily severed one of the creature's legs, causing it to reel back in pain, giving the Dark Knight enough clearance to move backwards from underneath it. Ignoring the pain in his legs and arms, Gwyn brought his sword back up and ready, tendrils of inky black and purple energy coiling off from the metal of the sword as he prepared another strike against the monster.

Whelp. Cynical genome child decided to chase after danger.@moogle
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Mikoto carefully watched the fight below as she tried to extract her ankle from the sticky spider spittle. She was finding that webbing was next to sand on the list of things she found she didn’t care for. It stuck to her fingers and didn’t want to be clean up easily. She felt the discontent rise in her chest. It spun the magic in her, just like she was taught. [break][break] Her face clearly scrunched in confusion and irk at Gwyn’s lack of action as the spider lunged at him. She had warned him, hadn’t she? Why did he bother to do nothing? Is this what it felt for her predecessor to watch her fail in the arena? She felt something akin to annoyance prick in her and the flame flickered to her. [break][break] Teal eyes turned to her caught ankle. The warmth of a fire spell ran through her fingers. She concentrated it on the webbing, despite her stomach churning at the smell. Could this creature be anymore disgusting? She supposed it wouldn’t have mattered if she was being digested by it. [break][break] Just as enough fiber of webbing burnt away to allow her access to her ankle, her eyes glanced down to see if Gwyn had been devoured. Surely he had. [break][break] But to her surprise, she saw him standing firm against the creature. Her eyes widened curiously as the Dark Knight held the monster at bay with darkness and strength alone. The monster writhed and its long spindly legs crushed into the earth making small crevices. Then he heaved the thing off of him. The young genome would never have guessed such strength in the stranger’s physique. The spidery creature let out a hostile screech before rearing back. It’s black blood oozing from its lost limb. The severed leg still writhed as if it had a death throe. [break][break] The spider was still hostile and it snapped its jaws at Gwyn once more. Suddenly, it seemed intelligent enough to know that this was not the fight it would win. It gave a final angry screech - high pitch and piercing. Mikoto’s fur stood on end at the sound, her mind ringing from the cry. It then, ran through Gwyn, carving its own path through the trees. [break][break] It was then Mikoto noticed what was embedded on the monster’s back. The thing that had drawn her to it the whole time was a Terran artifact she was wholly familiar with. A small blue and gold wand. It’s long shaft fixated a crescent moon at the end. Inside the moon housed a pulsing sapphire. [break][break] It belong to her and her magic. [break][break] Her eyes fixated on the path it took. Despite the danger that she was liberated from, nothing would tear her from claiming what was her’s. There was a moments hesitation as she looked down at Gwyn. Curious at this control over darkness. She simply stared at him too long with her wide bright eyes. Then, she pointed him to a path. “The exit.” Perhaps he would survive long enough to find it with his strength and power. [break][break] Then, she turned to the opposite path that the spider had crushed beneath its weight. Black blood dragged along dirt and brush. She rushed forward after it.
The screech of the creature was enough to cause Gwyn to wince, loud and piercing. Though what he thought might be another coming attack turned out to be the creature’s retreat, scrambling away best it could while missing a leg. He wasn’t keen on giving chase, opting to let the thing shamble away while he himself would tend to the girl that had appeared. After all she was only a child. [break][break] Turning to her as if to say something, his words caught in his throat as he noticed her gaze upon him. Seemingly stoic and unmoved by what had just happened. Before he could collect himself and ask if she was alright she pointed off into a direction and indicated it as the exit. He looked to where she was pointing and when he looked back to ask her something she was already off chasing the horror. [break][break] What was she? [break][break] Certainly not a human. Then again the world was filled with things that weren’t human, despite their appearance. Perhaps she was something akin to that…Gwyn wouldn’t know. The opportunity to ask was gone as soon as she decided to chase off after the creature. He gripped the hilt of his greatsword, what had she been thinking? That creature was massive, how could she hope to hunt it down? Glancing back over at the path that she had declared was the exit he sighed. It would have to wait. He wasn’t going to sit back and let some little girl chase after a monster, it wasn’t in his nature. [break][break] Turning towards the blood-stained path, he set off after them, following the sounds and thick bloody ichor that stained the forest floor. Silently he cursed the goddess for his stubborn resolve and inability to leave things alone. Silently he chastised himself for trying to put others first and not worrying about himself. Silently he hoped she was still alive… [break][break]

Don't mind her. Just waiting for giant spider human thing to sleep. @moogle
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] The dark blood was nearly impossible to see in the heavy shadows. Only small glimmers of light snuck through the dense canopies. It was just enough to cause the wetness to glint. But the creature was large and heavy, and thus a lot of the forest broke and crushed beneath the arachne. Needless to say, it was not difficult for Mikoto to follow. At least, not when she was so determined to retrieve what little was left of her home. She passed without leaving a trace. She found her way back up into the trees, to further protect herself from lurking predators below. [break][break] It did not take long. The trail led to a small cavern that was carved into a large hill. On the outside, spittle and webbing covered the ground and entrance. Some of it was spun into large oblong egg shapes. Maybe they were the creature’s meal? Maybe the creature laid eggs? The entrance seemed far too dark, but she could hear the fussing inside. Perhaps the spider returned to its den to mend itself. Either way, it was wounded and if Mikoto waited long enough for it to sleep… maybe she could sneak in and grab what was her’s without too much of a fuss. [break][break] Her tail swayed behind her as she thought on the proper strategy. She sat in resolved silence, determined to watch the entrance so that the object of her desire did not disappear from her again. It was then she heard something coming down the path in a hurry. She quickly stood up, ready for a fight. Was it a younger arachne? [break][break] She eased as she realized it was the man from before. “You didn’t leave?” She asked quietly, hoping he did not alarm the beast. She dropped from the tree, landing very lightly. “The den. I’m waiting for it to sleep.” Her voice was low as she continued to watch the shadowy entrance.
