II. PERSONA
Cocky, brash and arrogant, on the surface Yuffie can be incredibly irritating. She's fast to boast, aggressive, and overwhelmingly proud of herself, going as far as giving herself impressive sounding nicknames and titles. She tends to be very forward, acting without shame towards her goals, and always ready to challenge somebody to a fight. She has a very high opinion of herself, and often vastly over-estimates her own abilities. She also has a definite love of the theatrical.
She is snippy, humorous, and obnoxious, often coming up with demeaning nicknames for people. She tends to tell people exactly how she feels and isn't particularly good at hiding her emotions, although she can be deceitful and clever at times. She's very energetic and excitable.
Despite trying to project an aura of a selfish, self-absorbed thief, she actually has a surprisingly good heart, and in particular is deeply invested in the fate of her nation. III. HISTORY
Yuffie was born to Kasumi and Godo Kisaragi. Godo was the leader of the Nation of Wutai, but Yuffie was born during a time of war. Midgar wanted to build a Mako Reactor in Wutai, and Godo had rebelled against their plans. Wutai was losing the war badly and Yuffie's formative years were spent watching Wutai slowly have its rich history and tradition as a proud warrior culture stripped away as it was slowly conquered by Shinra.
As the daughter of Godo, and a princess of Wutai, Yuffie was trained from an early age in ninjitsu and combat techniques. Her mother passed away when she was very young, leaving Yuffie under the care of only her father, who had taken a resigned approach to the governance of Wutai, seemingly accepting it's inevitable defeat. She felt that Wutai was losing both its identity and its cultural heritage, and even as a child wanted nothing more than to see Wutai fully restored and defeat its enemy, Shinra. From as early as nine years old, Yuffie was proudly announcing herself to anybody who would listen as 'Wutai's Greatest Warrior'. She also began actively hunting treasure to try and fund Wutai's restoration, under the alias 'Treasure Princess', having stolen a list of treasure from her father, but largely failed in her various plots (which involved leaking the location to SOLDIER and then ambushing whoever turned up to try and claim it for herself; unsurprisingly this didn't work out). The only SOLDIER who ever answered her mails was Zack Fair, who tended to go along with her schemes enough to try and find the source of her information, but also looked out for the child Yuffie.
Shortly afterwards, AVALANCHE came to Wutai, as did the Turks. Not realising that the Turks worked for Shinra, Yuffie helped them for a short time. However, despite only knowing them for a short time, Yuffie's life changed drastically for one very simple reason; she learned about materia. Fascinated, she was determined to steal all the materia she could from the Turks, and although she failed and abandoned them as soon as she realised they worked for Shinra, she had a new obsession set for life.
The following years as Yuffie grew into a teenager were spent mostly obsessing over ways to find materia. She was under the impression that it had the power to help restore Wutai and win the war, but truth be told, she was also simply fascinated by the stuff and badly wanted it. As she got older and her skills increased, she only became more arrogant, her attitude unfortunately not tempered by her father who (Yuffie believed, at least) had fallen into depression as the war was being lost. Given that she was her father's daughter, nobody could keep her in check, and Yuffie would often run amuck, creating new schemes to attempt to restore Wutai, or get her hands on more materia, which often ended in disaster.
The Wutai war ended when Yuffie was in her early teens years old, with Wutai defeated. Despite the peace accords meaning that Wutai would not have a Mako reactor built there, Wutai was stripped of its proud warrior culture, and turned into a quaint tourist attraction, their ancient traditions now turned into a joke for Shinra tourists to observe and buy souvenirs of. Yuffie was doubly furious as she was now nearly old enough to join the Wutai army (uh, give or take a few years, but they'd totally make an exception for a badass like HER, right?) and believed that she could have led them to victory (extremely unrealistically, but she did).
Since then, Yuffie had continued her training as a ninja (although she was a TERRIBLE student, refusing to pay attention if she thought a class was boring, refusing to turn up for certain lessons, and usually acting like she knew better than the teachers), before setting off into the world to search for more materia, believing that it was the weapon Wutai needed to be able to strike back against Shinra. She had seen how effective it could be, and knew that Shinra had a mighty supply, so it only seemed logical to her that was how they were beaten. She just knew if she could get her hands on enough materia, Wutai would be able to fight back!

Her plan took her to the forests of Junon, where she waited to ambush travellers who seemed powerful and equipped with materia. Doing so brought her to cross paths with Cloud and AVALANCHE, where she tricked her way into the party and journeyed with them. Manipulating them to Wutai, she stole their materia and headed home, but was pursued by the group. Despite betraying the party time and again, her plan went wrong and she was captured by an old enemy of AVALANCHE's - Don Corneo. The party rescued Yuffie, and Yuffie returned their materia to them in gratitude. They did not seem quick to forgive Yuffie but Yuffie, realising that they were her friends, refused to abandon them and continued journeying with them.
When Aerith, one of the party was killed, Yuffie, the youngest in the group, took it to heart, and despite trying her best to keep things together, broke down in tears at her death and swore vengeance on Sephiroth. After that, despite her doubts and worries, she stayed by the party's side, fighting to become more powerful, even defeating her own father to claim his summon materia, and travelled to the Northern Crater to fight Sephiroth with the others.
She fought alongside the party, and together they defeated Sephiroth, freeing Holy and the Lifestream, which reached up to stop the meteor threatening the planet. Despite their losses, and the pain they had been through, in the end, Aerith's spirit and the Lifestream prevented meteor from destroying the planet, and Yuffie had been part of the team that had saved the world. The selfish teenage ninja had become an unlikely hero.
With Shinra destroyed, and the world saved, Yuffie returned to Wutai, to help her father begin to rebuild. With the threat of Shinra seemingly gone, Wutai was the new power on the planet, and Yuffie persuaded her father to reach out and begin to help all the places she had visited. At least, that was the plan. But all of the sudden, Yuffie finds herself somewhere new...
A whole new world. New places to explore. And no way home. That can mean only one thing.
