Torensten just felt like home. The sea breeze was thick with salt and smelled of sand and sun and the warring scents of the open-air markets. The heat was oppressive, but Kiva didn’t mind. She was used to the baking sun and the humidity. All around her, people moved through their day and the sounds of the bustling town filled the air along with the cries of seabirds. Behind it all was the ever-present ebb and flow of the ocean waves. There were differences, of course. But all in all, Torensten really felt almost exactly like Luca. Kiva might be worlds away from everyone she knew and loved and everything she knew. But at least she’d found Torensten, and it was comforting and familiar. [break][break]
She was even dressed in fashion reminiscent of home, having traded in her leather armor for a flowing dress of blue silk. She might not appear to be the most feminine woman at first glance, what with her short hair, muscular build, and scars. But Kiva enjoyed beautiful things. She loved the feeling of the soft silk floating against her calves as she walked, of the way the dress accentuated her curves and made her feel beautiful. And in this heat, the light and airy fabric was a godsend, helping her stay relatively cool as she walked through the busy port district. [break][break]
Kiva sipped a strange drink, something that caught her eye from a little dockside shop. It was alcoholic, some sweet fruity drink, but blended with ice. She didn’t know what it was, but she knew it was delicious. It barely tasted like alcohol and it just went so well with the hot day and the sea air. The vendor had to be making a well-deserved fortune. [break][break]
The former crusader stood for a long moment, sipping her drink and staring out across the sea as her hair fluttered in the breeze. She watched the boats come and go for a long while, just soaking in the atmosphere of the seaside. Dockhands scurried around her as well, tying down ships, toting crates and goods, and yelling to each other. Everything was chaotic yet she knew there was some order to the madness. Vaguely she wondered if there would be an employment opportunity here for her. She needed something, some way to afford the seaside apartment she dreamed of. [break][break]
Kiva was lost in her own world, her thoughts a contented swirl. It took a long moment before she fully realized what was happening at the dock, that the ordered chaos had descended into full-fledged madness. There was a boat that had just pulled in, a small vessel that seemed more than a little worse for wear. The green sails were tattered and the wood was splintered in places. And the crew was yelling, not the normal raised voices of a crew coming into port, but a high-pitched, panicked yelling. Kiva’s eyes narrowed and she took a step forward. She reached instinctively for her sword, recognizing peril. But, of course, she was swordless. She’d left it back in her room at the inn. Who’d have thought she needed a sword for a stroll down the dock? [break][break]
But something was happening on that boat, there was something there beyond the crew. A dark shape, a bestial monstrous shape. What had they brought into port with them? What had this crew unknowingly unleashed upon the peaceful port? Kiva grabbed the only weapon she had at her disposal, a small knife she kept strapped to her thigh just in case. She didn’t go anywhere completely unarmed. It was nothing like her sword, of course. But it was better than nothing. Then she looked around at the docks, desperately looking for anyone else who might help. Anyone who seemed a proper warrior or mage.
”This is boring… Can I not even cast one little spell on them?”
Asena had kept to the promise she had given Terra. She had thus far refrained from harming any humans…. Or messing with the humans goods… or dunking water on the humans… or….
The esper droned on in her head, for a while, there was a lot she liked doing to mess with the humans. Stuff she could not do now due to her promise to Terra. This was annoying, but if she did start messing with them again, she would ether get that hard not to listen to mother mode, or else, and perhaps worse: Terra’s disappointment in her. Somehow the idea of letting Terra down nagged at her. Moreover, after she had been so kind to her despite her attack on her precious humans. If she was being honest, it was probably that that was holding her back the most. Her dad had gotten on to her for her antics all the time, she could deal with that. But the idea of letting down the one being she really wanted to interact with sense she came here well… well it put her on edge enough not to go through with her temptations, that was for sure. So why was she in town to begin with, where the temptation was literally everywhere? Well Terra went off to do some things, leaving the Esper on her own for a while. She had thought that she could get in some fun while she was away but… even while she was gone her words and the promise she herself made nagged at her.
It was annoying, she had never been bothered before, yet now every time she thought to make a move her thoughts rang in the esper’s head. She was not even sure backing out of the promise would help at this point. It was not that she did not want to mess with humans anymore, she had simply become more hesitant, with the promise she made tying her down. She did not like humans any more than she had yesterday, Yet she could not bring herself to break that promise she made and bring them the harm they oh so deserved.
Was it because she did not want to disappoint Terra? Or because her words really had some effect on her?
……………
She did not want to think about that.
Lost in her thoughts she would make her way to the docks. Under normal circumstance if she were going to come here it would be at night when all the humans were sleeping. Listening to the waves helped calm her, they were a nice sight to gaze upon. She also enjoyed looking out at the vast expanse from the dock, it was a wonderful sight to behold. Despite that though she felt she needed it more today. If the humans chose to take offense to that well…. Driving them off for messing with HER was acceptable right? Though even that wasn’t meant to be as it seemed the humans, as they so often did managed to get themselves into yet another heap of trouble. A recent ship arrival came in, there ship rather battered from the look of things. Human screams she had heard before came from said ship, she recognized them as the ones she would so often cause herself. But these were not from her, they were from something on the ship, something she could almost make out…
With a scoff the Esper turned on her heel to leave them to their fate. This was none of her business after all. There was no sense at all in dragging herself into the stupid affairs of humans. Why should it matter to her what the creature wrought upon the port and town? She was not invested in the world of humans; she did not care about them at all. She would not flinch if each and every one of them died off for good. On the contrary she would prefer it.
And yet…
"I don't want to see anybody suffer. I don't want to hurt anybody. I fight when I need to, when the people I love need protecting, but I won't harm others out of cruelty. These people, these humans, have done nothing to you. Leave them alone"
…………………………
"Yes, these humans are different. All humans are different. No single human is the same as any other human. Even in the Empire, there were those capable of great evil, and those... capable of great good."
Before she had really thought about it she turned around and headed back towards the ship in question, eyeing down the shadow of whatever creature it was that was on board.
"I'm... sorry. For everything that happened. But I've seen the worse and the best of humanity. You can't... judge them all the same."
”Fine”
The words were not said to anyone in particular. They were an answer to someone not even in the same area as them. An affirmation of the words she had spoken to her. She would try to do as she said, at least for now. Her words had gotten to her… and she was not sure how to feel about that. She didn’t WANT to know how she felt about that, so she would focus on fighting whatever monster was on board that ship. Gosh she… REALLY needed to vent on something right now anyway, and that beast was PERFECT for it.
Though she did catch sight of one other curious thing as she in her view. That being what seemed to be the other combatant in all this A woman covered in scars. That at least was promising, loath as she was to work with a human at least it would mean the battle was over faster.
….if not for her equipment anyway.
Asena’s claws were sharp enough that she did not need to rely on weapons to get the desired effect, besides that her magic was all she needed to take down her foes to begin with. This woman however, Though she appeared experienced she was choosing to face down this creature with what seemed to her the worse possible combination of gear:A dress and a knife. Human reasoning continued to elude the Esper. She was aware humanity was capable of producing better arms than this and yet… She sighed.
”Human, are you not… underequipped for this?”
Confusion was clear in her face, even her ears as they slacked back on her head. She wasn’t going to stop her, it was no concern to her if a human chose to fight like this, perhaps it was some strange ritual she didn’t know about, perhaps she left her gear on a boat.
All that mattered to her right now, was taking down the beast before her. That was all she wanted to focus on right now.
Screams filled the air, chaos had descended upon the docks. One long sickly greenish-blue tentacle suddenly lashed out from the horrific shape. Kiva watched in horror as it coiled around one of the sailors like some slimy python, slowly constricting the life out of them. There was nothing for it, it didn’t matter that she just had one thin-bladed dagger she had to do something! [break][break]
But just as she was prepared to charge into danger she heard someone speak. She wasn’t used to being addressed simply as human and the word gave her pause. Her gaze flicked around and it soon became evident why the speaker would refer to her in such an interesting way. The girl was strange, something Kiva had never seen before. She had large lupine ears that blended in with the shimmering silver of her hair and on her hands glinted sharp claws. Clearly, she was no human though Kiva had no idea what or who she was. [break][break]
“I didn’t come to the docks looking for a fight, but I can’t leave them to die out there,” she protested in answer to the girl’s question. Those large silvery ears dropped a bit, just as an animal might when confused. “I have more experience than they do,” she added with a sharp gesture towards the sailors caught up in a flurry of tentacles. She couldn’t stand here having this conversation for too long. “By all means, come help if you’d like.” Those claws looking like they could certainly be helpful in a fight. And you never knew if someone had magical talent, especially not one so interesting as this girl. [break][break]
Without waiting for another response, Kiva charged into the fray. She easily leaped onto the swaying boat and caught her footing without issue. Then it was just the beast before her, eyes red and glowing. The most immediate danger was the screaming sailor caught up in the slimy tentacle, so Kiva ran there first. Daggers might not be the best weapon for the job but they could certainly cut through the monster’s flesh.
One of the sailors were taken by the creature’s tentacles. If she was being honest, she was unconcerned with this foolish man. They were the ones who decided to bring such a dangerous thing back home. What was a concern was what the creature could do from here on, to everything off that ship. If she were going to protect the humans from their own stupidity, she would have to stop this creature in its tracks. It was a hassle, but she was certain she could handle and dispense the monster, perhaps the human could even be of some use. She claimed to have experience, at least more so than those around her. If that was true she would be useful for fighting the monster. Though she questioned just how much experience could help an unarmored, poorly armed human. Protective of those around her, yet she did not dress like it. In the end… she supposed it was none of her business how she prepared herself though. If nothing else the human could take some of the monster’s attention from her. She looked to those that remained as the woman pointed towards them, though one could notice the near look of indifference from Asena in response. Terra’s words may have gotten through to her, but it didn’t mean she was suddenly head over heels for the humans ether.
”Why would they even bring in such a creature? It’s foolish, they can’t handle it… bleh, I suppose right now it does not matter”
At the woman’s suggestion that she come help Asena crossed her arms and gave a scowl, her ears pointing up noticeably in the process. Of course, Asena had already resolved to do so, but there was no need for her, or for that matter ANY of the humans to know that was her intent in the matter. The last thing she had want for was for a human to have knowledge that she wanted to help them. She was not even entirely sure it was the case ANYWAY. No, it was not, she was doing this for TERRA, yes that was it, that was all.
But they did not need to know that ether!
”Hmph, this port has a good and comfortable view, it would be terrible if it was ruined, that’s all, let’s go”
The pair made there way to the ship, an agile Esper Asena had little trouble making her way on to the ship behind the human. Naturally, the scarred woman prioritized freeing the captured ship worker, tied into the beast’s tentacle. Certainly, if he remained there, he would die, not that she cared. Still, this was her job, she wanted to see if Terra’s words rang as true as they felt. But it would do little to benefit them if her temporary partner simply got caught along with the sailors. As such she made her own focus on the beast itself, attempting to draw its attention so the woman could do her job. It was hit with a blast of her Aero magic, it’s powerful winds roaring in a strike against it!
The strange furry-eared girl questioned why they brought in the tentacled monstrosity. Kiva paused for a moment and gave her a strange look. Did she think this was intentional? It seemed to her that they were beset upon by the monster, not that they had gone looking for it for the fun of it. But maybe she was wrong, maybe the other girl saw something she didn’t. At any rate, it wasn’t time for an argument. [break][break]
She must have offended her somehow, if the way her ears moved was any indication. Kiva didn’t know how or why, but she certainly seemed annoyed with her before grumpily deciding that the port was comfortable and shouldn’t be ruined. So, she fought for the sake of the inanimate port and not the human lives about to be lost to the great tentacled beast? For the sake of a view and not for the man shrieking as his bones threatened to be crushed beneath the weight of the python-like tentacle. Kiva wanted to say something, to argue. But of course, now was not the time. She had help, that’s what mattered right now.[break][break]
They both easily cleared the jump to the beleaguered ship, gaining their footing on the creaking and splintering wood. As Kiva ran to the captured man, the girl squared off with the beast itself. She wasn’t surprised when a gust of magical wind issued from the girl. A mage, it seemed fitting for her general appearance. But Kiva couldn’t spare more than a glance at her companion. The tentacle was writhing before her, making sickening wet slapping sounds. Blood dripped down, ruining her dress. But the soldier was free! He doubled over coughing and clutching his ribs. Certainly in no shape to fight but he had a sword strapped to his back. A longsword, just like what Kiva was used to. “I’m borrowing this,” she grunted before fluidly unsheathing the sword and experimentally giving it a swing. Yes, this would do. Much better than her little dagger. The man barely even seemed to notice. [break][break]
With a scream of fury, the crusader launched herself into the fight with the horrifying beast itself. With a rush of energy and power, she focused her strength down the unfamiliar blade. Everything shimmered blue for a moment before her blow landed. Power break. That should weaken it, at least a little bit. Brackish green blood oozed from where her sword made contact. But even with the mighty slash and the mage’s wind magic, it was far from defeated. Thankfully, however, it had decided the two women were the threat. The soldiers were able to scramble away from the grasping tentacles. Some had swords, others crossbows. They were certainly less powerful than Kiva or the grey-eared girl, but they were helping a bit.
The human freed the solder, good, there goals were going well then. In addition, the woman had the presence of mind to replace her dagger with a sword. She was still ill equipped in her dress of all things, but it was not as if there was time to switch out given the situation. Perhaps she was more durable than most humans? It would serve their purposes if so, she seemed like a battle-hardened human anyway, and she seemed to wield her new blade well enough… so perhaps that was the case. If nothing else she was effective in combat, that was what mattered right now, anything else could wait.
Well, she said that, but her thoughts were put to rest once the woman began attacking herself. Able to wound the monster as much as she was, in the process weakening it as well. This she was fine with. What she was not ok with was the other foolish humans attacking as well when they should be fleeing the scene while they can. She supposed there was something to be said for bravery, but it did not mean much if that bravery was having little to no effect. Still, it was not as if she was concerned for them or anything. If they wanted to be foolish, they could, from a distance, yes perfect. Now, she needed to focus.
The beast was wounded, but it was far from down for the count. This woman had not yet exhibited the ability to use magic, though she did have considerable skill with that sword, more so being able to use it effectively enough to weaken her foe.
Perhaps if they could use that to drive the monster into a corner…? Yes, that could work. She had just the spell to help with it. The beast was lashing about, attacking them. Asena was not spared from this as a tentacle lashed her, pushing her back. However, it would take more than that to break an Esper! Standing up she wiped the resulting blood from her lips and focused her magic once more.
”Get ready to strike hard!”
She ASSUMED she would not need to clarify more than that, especially when the effects of the Valor spell began to affect her, as well as the solders. Everyone would notice a considerable increase in their physical abilities for a short time, roughly double what they would usually be capable of-the reason Asena said to get ready would be clear now, if it had not been before. Asena herself gave a deep growl as she to began to feel the effects of her magic. Claws at the ready she charged the beast which brought a tentacle down, but this time she managed to avoid its impact, using it as leverage to launch itself at the monster’s center, already honed claws empowered by her spell she put them to work swiping at him… finished with a strong kick from her metal clad foot!
The slimy tentacled beast was weakened for sure, but it was still fighting. Its fury had turned to Kiva and she was forced to parry and dodge. At least her light, airy dress allowed her to move away with ease. She let out a startled yelp and barely dodged the next blow, raising her borrowed sword up at the last second. Green blood dripped onto her, ruining the new dress she really liked. Damn thing! [break][break]
A tentacle reached past her, catching her unlikely companion. But the girl seemed to recover with ease, merely wiping away blood from her split lip. Otherwise she looked fine, still focused on the monstrous foe. When she yelled for Kiva to get ready, the crusader had no idea what she was planning. But it soon became apparent that she was weaving some sort of strengthening magic! Her muscles felt stronger, renewed and powerful. The soldiers around her seemed to feel similarly invigorated. [break][break]
Kiva let out a yell, strengthened by the magic flowing through her! She was definitely ready. The grey-eared girl growled just as Kiva hefted the blade, ready for another attack. Her sword came down with a mighty swing, severing the beast nearly in two just as her companion was swiping at it viciously with magically empowered claws. Together, they landed the final blow with blade and boot. The tentacled beast let out a screech of agony before it fell to the ship deck, breath slowly failing and green blood seeping into the wood panels. [break][break]
The soldiers whooped in victory around them, cheering and celebrating the end of the monster. Kiva wordlessly set the borrowed blade down beside the recovering soldier before turning to the other woman. The magic empowerment was slowly drifting away and Kiva felt more like her old, normal self now. She grinned, appreciating the post-battle high, and nodded causing sweaty blonde hair to fall forward. Some of the soldiers came forward to thank the two of them profusely. Kiva tried to disengage, feeling awkward under the praise. [break][break]
When she was able to back away, leaving them to dispose of the body and clean up their ship, the crusader turned her attention back to her unlikely companion. “That was great teamwork,” she said with a smile. “I’m Kiva, by the way.”
The monster screeched in agony as sword and claw ripped it in twain. It fell to the ground, the sign of it’s defeat oozing into the boards of the ship. She couldn’t help but laugh a little to herself, it would be an absolute pain for the humans to get that out! Speaking of humans, they were whooping and cheering at the beast falling, why? They were weak here; they would have been dead if not for her and the stronger human they would all have been dead right now.
Not that she cared about that, not even a little!
She simply couldn’t have this beast ruining her view, that was all this was, where else would she go to think? Yeah, that was all it was.
Stupid fragile humans.
The worse part was that those same fragile humans went on to keep thanking her for it, practically praising her and the other girl. The Esper’s ears twitched in response, as they always dd when she was in an awkward situation like this. Just thank the other dam human, she hadn’t even wanted anything to do with this!
”Yeah whatever, sure… just learn to wield your weapons better or something ok?”
When they did finally let up Asena excused herself, leaving the ship itself for likely large clean up and returning to the pier below, She made her way to the edge of the pier, staring out to the ocean as she tried to collect her thoughts.
Stupid promise, stupid weakling humans. Stupid reflex to keep her word.
Stupid…. STUPID EVERYTHING, UGGH!
Her hands rubbed against her head in frustration, her annoyance clear in the ‘dammits’ and ‘ugghs’ she was giving off as the other woman approached her, unnoticed by her in fact until the scarred woman actually spoke, prompting Asena to quickly turn around, in a rather comedic way as she….
Lost her balance and fell into the nearby water.
Clothes and fur and everything else now thoroughly soaked Asena pulled herself back up from under the water, glaring at the girl as she spit a jet of water out of her mouth and to the side.
”What’s the big idea?! Don’t human parents teach there kids NOT to just sneak up on someone while there busy?! Kiva…. Or whatever, yeah I guess we did. More useful than the other humans by far at least”
Pulling herself back on the pier, Asena proceeded to, despite her what she had said but a moment ago began shaking her body like an animal to get what water she could off her body… and likely getting it on the woman right in front of her. Then without missing a beat she looked over her clothes, then sighed.
”Bleh, this outfit always retains far to much water… its SUCH a pain..”
Muttering to herself, she then turned back to Kiva, as if she hadn’t just shot all her excess water in her general direction. Though not as annoyed as she was earlier, an observant person could tell the front she was putting on.
She couldn’t mess with the humans sure, but that didn’t mean she had to like them. She would never like them.
She refused to
”I’m Asena, what do you want anyway human? Just to pay that compliment…? I told you before, I had my own reasons for it, ok?”
