[attr="class","infoNotes"]A bourbon kind of night - smoke and honey
[attr="class","crashLyrics"]Sea of Stars
[attr="class","crashBody"] Well, it seemed her previous partner had given her quite the slip. Cissnei was more impressed than upset. It was rare that someone could disappear on her. Even more rare that someone could take something from her without notice. No wonder the wanted signs did no good to capture her. She drank a smokey bourbon in kudos to that. [break][break] The outdoor bar was lit by torches and Cissnei lounged in her own tankini - white tank with yellow shorts. And over it she wore a translucent sarong cover-up to protect from the nightly chill. Her copper hair caught the orange of the fire light. Off near the beach end, the judges were grading the sand castles. Cissnei did her best to mimic the Shinra building in sculptured ‘castle’. Even made individual reactors surrounding the wall as each its own tower. She was no Reeve Tuesti, but she thought her architecture was quite well done given that she was using...well...sand. And right beneath it, she wrote Sonora. Any Shinra personnel should be able to understand THAT huge clue. [break][break] But she wondered how well Torensten judges would take Sonora being written in their dirt. [break][break] She gave a grin at the thought and sipped her bourbon. The music from the makeshift dance floor set to work with slow, grinding music. But she knew in the next song the pace would pick up. It was getting late though, so they’ve been playing more of the slower stuff. There would later be a release of lights into the ocean as well. Then, of course the bonfire wasn’t far for roasting some treats and cuddling up to others. [break][break] Cissnei noticed a woman. Her hair caught what gold was in the light. She had a scar down one eye and burns along her neck. It only made her more beautiful, knowing that she had survived the ordeals that marked her. There was a sudden curiosity to want to know her. She leaned back along the bar, to whisper to the bartender to send her a honeyed bourbon. That it should be poured in front of her, of course. [break][break] Cissnei looked away for a moment, but turned to look at her from the corner of her eyes. A soft smile touched at her lips.
Kiva had stepped into the city of Torensten during some sort of festival it seemed. The city reminded her quite a lot of the port town of Luca during some of the largest Blitzball tournaments. The streets were vibrant with the sound of music, the crush of crowds, and the enticing aromas of strange and exotic foods. It was equal parts overwhelming and intriguing. [break][break]
A glance up at a colorful banner told the crusader that this was the Voyage de Amour. Ah well, that would explain why most of the crowd seemed paired off in couples. Some looked awkward while some seemed to be enjoying themselves. And Kiva was alone. Oh well, no matter. She was so new to this world and even newer to this city, there was enough to occupy her even without the company of a date! [break][break]
She drifted through the bustling streets, thankful she had a few gil on her to buy a couple of the most delicious smelling foods to eat as she walked. At least the sights and sounds of Torensten weren’t too jarring and strange. Really, it could have been Luca. Even the climate felt identical, which made Kiva happy for the generally light and airy fashion of Spira. She’d been wearing civilian clothes as she recovered in the Djose Temple and she hadn’t exactly had time to buy a new wardrobe yet. Her skirt was short in the front and long in the back, in multiple shades of teal trimmed in white. Her shirt was thin and light, a shimmery dark blue that floated gracefully off her shoulders. Most importantly, it didn’t rub or chafe her healing burns. [break][break]
Eventually, Kiva’s wanderings ended at the beach. She slipped off her shoes and held them in one hand, relishing the feel of night-cooled sand beneath her feet. It feels like home, she thought with a sigh. But after the turmoil of Spira and the never-ending war with Sin, this was like home but peaceful. At least, so far. Sure there had been some monsters in the Headstone Forest, but there didn’t seem to be any sort of overwhelming evil here that dominated all life. And she’d count that as peace. [break][break]
She found herself at the outside bar, amongst couples engaged in various levels of conversation. The music was slow and sensual and the lights were low. It was the perfect atmosphere to kick back and relax, to take in the sights and sounds. To fully immerse herself in this new world she’d suddenly found herself in. Kiva was about to flag the bartender down and order herself a drink, but then the unexpected happened. Unbidden, the bartender approached, mixing a drink that smelled of honey and smoke. Kiva watched curiously as the drink was set before her. “From the lady with the red hair,” the bartender explained with a wink and a glance at a beautiful woman seated at the bar. [break][break]
The unexpected turn of events brought a smile to Kiva’s lips and she looked at the woman who’d bought a lonely, strange traveler a drink. She was alone too, amongst all the couples. Her hair was fiery, all but glowing in the flickering torch light. She was dressed for a swim with only a shimmering sarong over top of her bathing suit. Kiva raised the cold drink to her lips and took a sip. And nearly sighed from the taste. It was absolutely delicious, with just enough sweetness to temper the bitter sting of the alcohol. With a smile, she decided to go for it. It wasn’t every day a mysterious, beautiful woman bought you a drink. [break][break]
Mustering her confidence, Kiva stood and tossed her short blonde hair back. She smiled and approached the bar, sliding into the seat beside the other woman. She took another sip of her drink. “Somehow you knew what I wanted to drink better than I did,” she commented with a smile. She leaned her back against the bar. “How’ve you found yourself alone here?” She didn’t think a woman who looked this striking would have had any trouble securing a date.
[attr="class","infoNotes"]Its such a beautiful night.
[attr="class","crashLyrics"]Sea of Stars
[attr="class","crashBody"] The glass was a golden glimmer as the woman took a sip. It seemed the perfect remedy for a long, hard day. There was a brief moment of indecision, but soon she found her way to the lady Turk at the bar. Cissnei returned her smile warmly, the seat next to her now graced by an accepted invitation. “Honey bourbon is my favorite for days I feel contemplative.” When she needs something to help sweeten the day, it is her go to choice. “And watching the ocean always puts me in that mood.” She shrugged and turned her head to look at Kiva, hair falling over her shoulders. “It seems it did for you too.” What had she been pondering about? [break][break]
Cissnei smirked and looked away at the question. Her own glass sat on the bar and she shrugged. “She didn’t come to the festival to enjoy the social portion. So, my paired date decided diamonds were a much better company than I.” She said simply and as if she was unsurprised. It did not bother her though. “To each their own vice.” She winked cheerfully and raised her glass before taking a sip. She offhandedly waved at the bartender to keep pouring for them. [break][break]
She hummed thoughtfully as she put her glass down. “It seems you survived the mess of a festival. What brought you to the beach? You don’t exactly look ready for a nightly swim, but something about it must have attracted you.” The dress did complement her features, regardless. It made Cissnei want to take her for a dance. “Cissnei, by the way.” She offered her name. Can’t be strangers once she introduced herself. “And who do I owe the pleasure of catching my eye?” The music switched to a little faster pace, and the lights of the makeshift dance floor lit the sands. Others were playing some bar games on the beach, just laughing amongst each other.
Honey bourbon wasn’t a liquor that Kiva was familiar with but it was certainly one she’d have to remember for the future. Contemplative. Yes, that was a good word for her current mood. In fact, a good word for her mood since arriving in Zephon. Contemplating her new lot in life, her new world. It worked well. Kiva smiled softly and nodded. “I grew up on the ocean,” she said, eyes drifting out towards the swell of the waves again. “I guess it always makes me drift away into memories.” [break][break]
The other woman explained how her date had left her for diamonds. But she didn’t seem concerned by that turn of events, just winked and raised her own glass of golden liquid. Ah well, one woman’s loss was Kiva’s gain and she’d make the most of her sudden companionship. It was certainly better to while away the hours with good company and a delicious drink than to sit alone, stewing in her thoughts. [break][break]
“I only just arrived in Torensten,” she explained. “I didn’t even know the festival was occurring. I was just roaming the streets, taking in the sights but my feet led me here, eventually. The call of the sea, I suppose.” She glanced down at her flowing teal skirt. “Unfortunately, no,” she agreed, not ready for a swim. Then she paused and took a drink, a smirk crossing her features. “Or maybe it’s dark enough that no one would notice if I went for a swim in my underclothes.” Did Kiva even care? Life with the crusaders wasn’t for prudes. There wasn’t exactly the luxury of privacy. [break][break]
“Kiva,” she introduced herself with a smile, “And I assure you, Cissnei, you are far more eye-catching.” Her gaze drifted over the other woman’s red hair, sparkling and shimmering in the torch light. She really was quite beautiful. And unscarred, Kiva couldn’t help but think. She tried not to let her injuries dampen her self-esteem, but the burn scars were new. She hadn’t had enough time yet to come to terms with that disfigurement. At least her facial scar was older, more a part of her. [break][break]
Kiva eventually followed Cissnei’s gaze to the dance floor on the sand, lights shifting and glittering. She heard laughter and merriment. How long had it been since Kiva had just had a night of fun and frivolity? She stood and stretched, then offered a hand to Cissnei. “Would you care to join me on the dance floor? Or perhaps just a walk along the waves?”
[attr="class","crashBody"] Quietly, Cissnei listened. Kiva still sounded a little dreamy in her words, especially as her eyes drifted back to the ocean. It was picturesque as the wind stirred Kiva’s hair as she looked out. “Is that so? Were you a mermaid?” She teased softly. “It sounds like you were fond of home.” She hummed thoughtfully, taking another sip of her bourbon. She felt the warmth in her cheeks and her tongue was already loosening. [break][break] She took a deep breath, as if to admire the night air. “Well, you arrived in Torensten at exactly the right time. It's all lit with beauty. And there’s nothing more beautiful in Torensten than the sea. It will be alight with special crystals tonight. After the fireworks, everyone gets to release a little boat into the ocean carrying a single wish.” It would indeed be a sea of white starry wishes. “And perhaps, I can help you get settled somewhere safe afterwards.” It sounded like Kiva just arrived, so she may not know of the better inns. [break][break] Cissnei chuckled, “That reminds me of when I would swim naked at night in Costa del Sol.” Those moon baths on the private beach were quite refreshing. There was nothing more that felt as freeing. “Well, I won’t tell if you don’t.” She winked at Kiva, in regards to her swimming in her underwear. “If the sea calls, then you must answer her.” [break][break] “Kiva…” Cissnei purred the name, enjoying every syllable. She only smiled at the compliment, looking down at her drink. “I would love to join you for a dance. Then we can stroll to cool off.” Cissnei lightly slipped off her stool, and placed her glass on the bar. She turned to offer her hand to Kiva. “At least on the dance floor I can see the fire sparkle in your eyes better.” The lights there would make sure of that.
Her newfound companion teased her gently, asking if she was a mermaid. Kiva chuckled softly, lips curling in a good-natured smirk. “If only.” She took another sip of her honeyed drink and sighed softly. The alcohol was already going to her head and warming her limbs. “I miss it sometimes,” she admitted in a low voice, gaze drifting back out to the frothing waves. “But it seems more peaceful here.” [break][break]
Cissnei’s voice was melodic as she described what would happen later, a fleet of tiny boats with glimmering crystals set asea. Kiva could hardly envision it, all those flickering beautiful lights like a reflection of the stars themselves. She smiled and silently agreed. She had certainly chosen the best time to find her way into Torensten. Had she arrived just a day later she would have regretted missing tonight. [break][break]
“I do have a room at an inn on the outskirts of town. But as I was heading out a huge rat ran over my feet. So if you have a better suggestion I would certainly appreciate it,” she said with another soft laugh as Cissnei offered to help her get settled. The inn had been the first one she encountered and she’d really needed somewhere to bathe and change. And somewhere to leave her greatsword. But if there was a better option than that rat-infested hovel with barely warm water, Kiva was definitely open to moving locations. [break][break]
She didn’t know what Costa del Sol was, but assumedly it was somewhere here that the other woman was familiar with. Or, who knows, perhaps a location in another world. Because Kiva surely wasn’t the only person from some far flung world now roaming this strange new land. Perhaps Cissnei was too. At any rate, she chuckled low in her throat again, feeling her tension and stress fade away. Maybe it was the bourbon, maybe it was the company of this beautiful and mysterious woman. More likely it was a combination of both. “The sea’s demands must be appeased,” she agreed with an answering wink of her own. And perhaps they would by the end of the night. Who knew. Anything was possible. [break][break]
Her cheeks flamed as the red-head positively purred her name, lingering on every syllable. Her whole body felt warm and her brain was on fire. Her companion agreed to a dance and a stroll beneath the stars and Kiva was delighted. How long had it been since she’d had a night like this? One of fun and joy, without fear of looming death and disaster, without having to think about Sin. She drained the last bit of her drink and set it on the bar beside Cissnei’s then ran a hand through her short hair, tousling the golden blonde strands. [break][break]
She didn’t need convincing to take the woman’s hand and follow her to the makeshift dance floor on the beach. Kiva couldn’t help but blush again as Cissnei complimented her again. She wasn’t one to generally think of herself as beautiful, not with her scars, broad shoulders, and lopsided hair. But there was something in her that the other woman was seeing so Kiva didn’t feel compelled to argue. Even though the other woman was far more conventionally beautiful. Her lips curled in another smile as she began to move fluidly to the music. Dancing wasn’t really so dissimilar from swordplay. It was all about footwork and balance. When the music seemed to call for it, she reached out to spin Cissnei if the other woman accepted. [break][break]
“Your hair is absolutely mesmerizing.” She was getting distracted by the end of the song, eyes caught on the hundreds of shades of red, copper, and gold all dancing in the firelight. “And your eyes are a reflection of the fire itself.” The deep orange hue was unknown to her, unlike any eyes she’d ever seen. They were beautiful and unique, a gleaming copper. [break][break]
Just then, the first song faded and the second began. It was a slower tune now and the lights dimmed, just a little. Was it hinting that the dancing segment of the night was nearing its end? No matter, they still have a night walk along the shore to look forward to. Not to mention the fleet of crystals riding the waves out into the open sea.
[attr="class","crashBody"] “A rat?!” Cissnei eyebrows rose at the thought of having a rat unabashedly step over her toes. Then again, she was not currently in her work boots. “I’m sure there are some better accommodations.” There were probably some discounts for the festival too. Or laying out on the beach didn’t seem such a bad alternative. [break][break] Cissnei knew better than to ask too many questions on such a fine night. Whatever made tonight more peaceful than her past, Cissnei was willing to grant it in the spirit of tonight’s festivities. And she meant to enjoy it herself. After all, she was on ‘break’. [break][break]
Kiva’s cheeks dusted with Cissnei’s favorite color. She didn’t know it could come in so many shades. She smiled as she received Kiva’s hand. Just by its feel she could tell she did some manual labor. She wielded a heavy tool in the least. Ah, someone alluring and strong. And the wind tousled her hair just right to frame her face during the dance. [break][break] The rhythm picked up a little more and she found that she loved the way Kiva’s skirts swished around her legs and the way her eyes wandered to her hair. She accepted the spin. However she did not spin all the way in a circle. She stepped away from Kiva, her back to her. Her wrists crossed over her head and her hips swung in a circle twice before popping back.Her fingers softly caressed her own hair as they lowered before she turned to look at Kiva over her shoulder with a smile. [break][break] She made soft movements to the dance to turn back to Kiva, before fluidly transitioning back to the slow dance. She reached out to take Kiva’s hand in her own. She slipped the other on Kiva’s waist and pulled her closer. Cissnei felt her cheeks burn a little red at the compliments. Most told her that her hair was rust colored. She was not sure how to handle such beautiful compliments. “Careful tiger.” Her eyes met Kiva’s, allowing Kiva to have her fill of the fire in them. “You might enflame me too quickly. Then, you’d have no choice but to splash me in the coolness of your sea.” She chuckled softly, enjoying herself. [break][break] The couples held each other close and cantered side to side in slow pirouettes. Cissnei looked up at Kiva. She could not help but wonder. “I wish to know many things about you. Your favorite color. What you like to do. And mostly, what will you wish for tonight?” She spoke gently and curiously.
Her heart beat frantically along with the rhythm of the song, pulsing through her body. She felt warm and airy, as if drunk. But she surely hadn’t drunk enough of the honeyed whiskey to be there yet. No, it was the woman dancing in her arms, lithe body swaying to the music that caused this reaction in her. Kiva watched, mesmerized, as Cissnei’s hips swayed before she turned towards her again with a coy smile. She knew she was a little out of her depth here, playing with fire. But tonight, she thought she might welcome the burn. It was a new world, a new life. What was the point of starting anew if she wasn’t going to take advantage of it?[break][break]
Kiva in Spira had rarely had a chance to pursue romance. There’d been a few occasions here and there, but nights of frivolity were hard to come by. She laughed appreciatively, throwing all caution to the wind and fully giving herself up to this chance encounter for the evening. She deserved this, and it seemed Cissnei did too. The other woman’s arm snaked around her waist as Kiva’s own arms moved to encircle her. They were both warmed by the dance and by the company. She knew sweat trickled down her spine but hoped Cissnei didn’t notice or care. She herself was too distracted by the feel of her beneath her hands, the movement of her body as the dance turned slower. [break][break]
“I am sure that could be arranged,” she murmured in answer to her companion’s words about splashing in the sea. She subtly flexed the muscles in her arms, confident she could pick up Cissnei and drag them both into the waves, and winked. “Before the night is out, perhaps.” [break][break]
The dance was slow now and both women held each other, swaying gently to the music. The firelight flickered gently and the stars twinkled bright overhead. Kiva sighed softly, content and happy in a way she hadn’t felt in quite a while. She was surprised when Cissnei looked up at her, asking questions about her, curious questions about her. She wasn’t entirely used to sharing little details like favorite colors, or thinking about what she really liked to do. So she was silent for a moment, pondering. [break][break]
“Purple,” she finally murmured, eyes drifting over Cissnei’s head to watch the glimmering firelight. “But I find myself rather drawn to red tonight. As for what I like to do? Hmm.” She hadn’t had much time for hobbies recently. “I’m good at fighting, but I don’t truly enjoy it. Reading has always been a way I enjoy whiling away the hours. And exploring, hiking, anything in nature.” She smiled, oddly touched to be answering personal questions about herself. “And for tonight? I’m happy to have good companionship and conversation, to dance and swim and watch the stars. And more?” Her lips curved into a gentle smile. “Well, we can see how the night goes. And for you, Cissnei? What would you like the night to hold? And what do you spend your days doing here in this beautiful world?”
[attr="class","crashBody"] Kiva had a beautiful laugh. It filled the air and seemed to be just as musical as the song they listened to. Cissnei readily accepted the dance as she was pulled even closer. Her fingers traced up her spine. And for the short duration of the song, it seemed only they were on the dance floor beneath the stars. [break][break] Ochre eyes watched her curiously observing how the different lights graced Kiva’s skin. How the colors each had their soft expressions over Kiva’s own content.The light in her eyes reflected beautifully, no matter the shade. Cissnei smiled at her, as they swayed as gently as the ocean waves. Soft and rhythmic. [break][break] “And what subject do you enjoy reading? I wonder if I have a few suggestions.” She hummed mindfully. The music slowed to a stop. Cissnei separated from her and turned away. Then on a second thought, she looked up at Kiva and took her by the hand. A soft coy grin touched the edges of her lips. “I would rather hold your hand, instead of yielding it to the night.” She said cheekily. “Come, let’s cool off.” She gave a tug before walking along the sands to the beach. The sand seemed so white under the moonlight. The waves crashed rhythmically on the beach, splashing its cold spray. [break][break] “As for how I spend my days, I am unfortunately dull. I work mostly. Then, I prefer to either sit at a bar and listen to good music and conversation. Or curl up with a book, if I’ve the time.” She did not do well talking about herself. It was hard when you were an investigator and your job was to listen to others. Or when you disguise may change all together. But she had no need for disguises tonight. Cissnei began to toe along the water, letting the water just touch her feet. It was freezing without the warmth of the sun. She hesitated just a bit.
The two women drifted away to the music beneath the starry sky. Kiva could feel the melody deep in her bones, urging her onward. She felt free and alive, her mind wholly here, focused on this moment. “Mysteries,” she responded easily when asked about her book preferences. There was little she enjoyed more than sitting in suspense turning page-after-page, just wondering what the end of the book would reveal. The more unpredictable the better. “But I can’t say I don’t enjoy a spare romance here or there, if I’m wanting a more relaxing read. And you, what genre would you have the best recommendations for?” [break][break]
When the music stopped, they drifted away from each other briefly before Cissnei turned and took Kiva’s hand with a mischievous grin dancing on her lips. She felt a rush of heat surge through her body at the other woman’s expression. She certainly wasn’t going to argue with continued contact as their hands slipped together. The ocean waited, beckoning them onward. [break][break]
The beauty of the beach at night was a sight to behold and Kiva was briefly entranced by the sight of the sand sparkling silver in the moonlight. But then her gaze drifted back to her companion and she found herself instead distracted by the play of light on Cissnei’s vibrant hair, of how the shimmery moonlight and flickering firelight warred for dominance. [break][break]
When Cissnei spoke of herself, Kiva felt a growing familiarity. The two women seemed much the same, though here in Zephon Kiva had yet to find any work to occupy her days with. But back in Spira, her life as a Crusader had certainly taken the majority of her time. She hummed in response then asked, “What is your line of work, if you don’t mind my asking?” She honestly couldn’t guess. There was definitely power and strength in the way Cissnei carried and presented herself, but what job would she have here? Kiva didn’t know enough about Zephon yet to even know what common jobs were. [break][break]
As they inched into the surf, Kiva couldn’t help but let out a small yelp at the feel of the freezing water on her feet. Cissnei seemed to tense as well and Kiva realized she had gripped the other woman’s hand too hard. She laughed and grinned sheepishly. “I wasn’t expecting it to be so cold! Even at night, the ocean at home was warmer than this.” But she took another step into the frigid waves, gritting her teeth against the sensation. It was bracing, but still… the feeling of ocean water drifting around her was comforting in a way. “Perhaps any plans of swimming are out for the night.”
