Change was good. Change was necessary. For too long, Jessie had been stagnant. It was long past time for change. [break][break]
She stood in her small apartment and looked around. Some of her possessions had been boxed up, others had been sold. She’d paid her landlord for the next three months and a little extra, just to make sure the place stayed safe and secure. Maybe she’d drift back during that time, but if not she had the freedom to travel, to escape into the wild unknown of Zephon. [break][break]
She was dressed simply and comfortably, in dark leggings, a blue tunic, and a leather jacket. Everything she was bringing with her fit neatly into a pack she slung over one shoulder. Her gun was strapped to her hip and her materia-lined bracer was firmly in place on her arm. She was as ready as she was ever going to be. But it felt weird. It felt insane to be leaving, to be departing into the great unknown for months. Jessie was a courageous woman, but there was fear there too. Fear of the unknown and of what she’d find out in the wilderness. [break][break]
But there was nothing for it. She’d already put in her leave with Brinnia. She’d already paid her landlord. There were no more excuses! So she took a steadying breath, walked outside, and locked the door behind her with a final clink. The morning air was cool and refreshing before the heat of the day could become too oppressive. She would head north, she decided. First to Provo, then up to Sonora. [break][break]
But you could travel on an empty stomach and without a spot of caffeine, now could you? So before setting her feet to the road and her mind to the journey ahead, Jessie settled herself at a table outside one of her favorite little cafes. Her coffee was cold and sweet and her breakfast was hot and savory. As she ate and drank, she watched the morning hustle of people around her. She’d gotten here early and as she sat, Torensten had woken up around her. She looked for familiar faces in the crowd. [break][break]
In not too long, she sat at her table nursing her second coffee. The food was long-gone and she just had to get up and go now. Adventure awaited in the great unknown!
Terra thought that after everything she had been through, that she finally had a handle on what it meant to be human. She had learned to love, to feel, to fight when needed and protect when not, she had found a purpose outside of the weapon the Empire had made her into, she finally thought she had a handle on living a life she had known so little about.
But that had been back in the ruined world. Because even after Kefka had been defeated, even after magic had left, there had been so much to do. A world to rebuild, her children that needed protecting... Terra had found a purpose. She knew what to do with her life. And it didn't involve fighting. She had no power left to exploit. It just involves looking after those that needed it. Being a Mama to those children.
And now she was here. On Zephron. She had no children here to protect. No world to rebuild. No evil to fight. No Empire enslaving her. Here, Terra had no purpose. No quest. Nobody depending upon her.
And she had no idea what to do.
She had finally felt like she was beginning to fit in with people around her. That she wasn't just a freak who couldn't feel, who wasn't human, anymore. And now she felt back to square one. An outsider, trying to learn what it meant to be human all over again. Was it because her Esper half had reawakened? Was it like she had always feared, that somehow, being not-fully-human made her part monster? Unable to feel, unable to fit in?
No. Terra was past that self doubt. She knew now that Espers were as good and humane as any human. It wasn't her Esper half or her magical half. It was just her. You couldn't spend your life as a prisoner, raised as a weapon, and then literally mind controlled, and come out of it as a well adjusted human. She still had so much to learn and so many things she didn't understand. And now she had no obvious purpose either, she had no idea what to do with herself.
And so, her quest to once again understand what it meant to be human, to try and find how to live this new, human life in Zephron, at least until she found a way back to her children, began in that ultimate place where all humanity intersected. Where she had been told if she wanted to understand what it meant to be truly human, she had to visit.
The coffee shop.
Terra's eyes scanned the shop. It seemed busy. It also seemed like a good place to try and make friends. Being alone wasn't helping her detachment from humanity. She saw a woman at a table, with a drink. Except she didn't seem to be drinking it. That seemed odd to Terra. What was the purpose of a coffee shop if you bought coffee but then didn't drink it there? She decided the best thing to do was ask. She got the familiar butterflies in her stomach at initiating a conversation with a stranger, but swallowed her nerves to approach, and slid the seat across, moving her cape so that she could sit down.
"Hello. Do you mind if I sit here?" she asked. Her eyes moved to the drink, and then back to the girl. "I thought you looked like you needed somebody to talk to. Is there something wrong with your drink?" she asked, wondering if that was the girl's problem. Better to try and understand and find out what was going on here. "I'm Terra. Nice to meet you," she smiled.
Jessie swirled her iced coffee absently, lost in thought. She knew she was stalling at this point. She really just needed to stand up and move. But the great unknown was intimidating even though she was loath to admit it. Jessie prided herself in her courage and her thirst for adventure and life. But setting off alone into this strange, mostly unfamiliar world pushed her to her limits. [break][break]
Her thoughts were drifting through various possibilities of peril when a shock of brilliant green caught her attention and she looked up. A young woman with the most beautiful hair she’d ever seen was approaching her little table. She was dressed in equally vibrant colors and Jessie decided immediately that she liked her style. And if a book could be judged by its cover, she’d like the girl too. [break][break]
The newcomer seemed anxious as she asked Jessie if she could share the table. Jessie flashed her a grin, pushing all thoughts of adventure and peril away for now. “Of course! Please do.” She gestured to the open chair across from her and looked at her new companion curiously as she continued speaking. “Oh!” Jessie took a quick sip of the iced coffee. “Oh no, it’s all perfectly good. Really tasty actually, vanilla and hazelnut, y’know? I’d get you one if you’d like to try! That’s not the problem, it’s… just fear of the unknown I guess.” Oops, she was babbling. Apparently her anxiety was still there. [break][break]
Jessie took a deep breath and smiled again. “Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself. Nice to meet you, Terra. I’m Jessie!” She stuck out her hand to shake. “And I’d be perfectly happy if you joined me for a drink and a conversation.”
Terra blinked slowly at the girl's response. She often did that when presented with new information about people that she had to try and understand. People were, mostly, strange. They were nice and amazing and kind and worth being friends with, but they were also strange. For example, right now. The facts that Terra now possessed were these; Jessie, for that was her name, liked her drink. But she didn't want to drink it because... she was scared of the unknown?
Those two things seemed very unrelated. Maybe she didn't know what her coffee tasted like, and that was why she was scared? But if that was true, how could she know that she liked it? And to describe the flavouring to Terra?
She rotated the two facts around in her brain for a moment, but she couldn't make them fit in any way that she understood. Eventually, she decided to ask. "What's unknown about the coffee?" she questioned. Maybe she would try one. Then she would understand. "I'd like to try one!" she decided, smiling excitedly at the idea. If she tried one, maybe she'd understand the strange mystery Jessie had presented.
"Thanks!" she smiled at being invited to join the conversation. "I'm quite new here. It's very strange," Terra admitted. "I was hoping to make friends."
The green-haired girl seemed a bit confused. There was something about her, some way about how her eyes studied Jessie closely. It reminded her of Mikoto in a way, like the strange lost girl who hadn’t known how to shop for clothing. Was Terra similar? Did she come from a world or circumstance where ordering coffee at a cafe was odd or maybe even nonexistent? [breakbreak]
Luckily, Jessie was fairly adept at dealing with outcasts of society, those who just needed a little help and understanding. “Oh, sorry. That’s not what I meant. The coffee isn’t the unknown,” she tried to explain, words coming out in a bit of a rush. “I’m just lost in thought and forgetting about my drink.” She grinned at the girl when she accepted her offer for a coffee. “Be right back,” she promised and left Terra at the table to get a second drink. Hopefully she’d like it! But surely the sweetness and rich flavor would appeal to almost anyone. [break][break]
There wasn’t a long line so Jessie was able to scurry up and grab a second drink with little issue. She returned to the table and set the glass in front of her new companion. “Here! I hope you like it. Cold coffee is really nice on hot days like today.” It was early, but already the sun was oppressive and the day was steadily turning sticky and muggy. Just another day in tropical Torensten. [break][break]
She smiled warmly, taking a sip of her own drink now. Apparently all you needed was a friendly face and a bit of conversation to distract you from your anxiety. At least that seemed to be what worked for Jessie. “I always love making new friends,” Jessie gushed. “Are you new to Zephon entirely?” she asked curiously, “Or just Torensten?” [break][break]
“I’m actually about to head out of town for a bit, looking for adventure and all that. But if you want I can show you around a bit today. I’ve been here a year so I know all the best places,” she boasted with a good-natured grin. ”Do you have somewhere you’re staying?”
Slowly, pieces fell in to place for Terra. She knew that she could be naïve, and perhaps at times take things too literally, and that was what had happened here. Jessie's fear of the unknown was entirely unrelated to the coffee. Obviously, the poor girl was facing, well, something, although Terra had no idea quite what it was. She knew what it was like, however, to face the unknown. To be unsure whether or not you're making the right decision. To not know if you were making the right choice.
Before Terra could ask about it however, the girl disappeared to get her a coffee. Terra blinked a few times, and looked around the coffee shop, waiting, before Jessie returned with said beverage in hand.
She took the coffee but looked down at it curiously. Cold coffee? That was new to her. "At least I don't have to worry about it going cold," she joked, feeling that it was rather lame and managing a slight smile. Jessie went on to ask about her arrival, and Terra nodded. "Yes. I only arrived here recently. I guess like so many others, from another world." It sounded absurd to say it out loud, but then again, no more absurd than anything else that had happened to Terra recently. "Are you from Zephron? Or did you come here from somewhere else, like me?" she asked.
She looked a bit surprised when the girl said she was looking for adventure. Ah, so she had that similar youthful energy and will to explore. Like Locke. Like Edgar. Like Sabin. Terra smiled a little. "I have done plenty of adventuring. Not always by my own choice," she admitted. "I hope that you stay safe. It can be dangerous alone," she added quickly.
When she was asked if she had a place to stay, she nodded. "Not here. Outside of town. I... met somebody from my... tribe?" She wasn't sure how to explain that she was part Esper. It seemed better to keep the concept simple. "Perhaps instead I could come with you? Just back to the forest, and keep you safe on the way. It's better to travel in pairs, and I need to head back that way anyway?" Terra suggested, her natural Mom instinct taking over.
Terra seemed confused by the coffee Jessie thrust into her hands. Oh well! Maybe she’d acquire a taste for it sometime. It just made Jessie happy to share a drink and a chat with someone. The green-haired girl confirmed her suspicions that she was new to this world. It was getting easier to tell Zephon natives apart from those that came from other lands like Jessie herself had. “I came from elsewhere, too,” Jessie confirmed. “A world called Gaia. I don’t suppose that sounds familiar to you, does it?” It would be too much to hope that they could possibly be from the same place, right? Though Jessie had met others from Gaia before, so it wasn’t outside the realm of possibility.
She nodded as Terra cautioned her about traveling alone. “Yeah, I hope I won’t always be alone. Maybe I can find allies along the way.” She then gestured to the gun and shortsword strapped to her belt, “But I can take care of myself pretty well at least!” Then she sipped on her coffee before continuing to chatter, now a little more sedately. “I can’t really remember a lot about my past,” she admitted, “But I know I always worked with a team. I can’t remember their faces or names, but I remember being happy with them. Maybe not always safe, but it was nice to have someone watch your back.”
“Oh!” The suggestion of traveling together caught Jessie off guard but she was delighted! “Absolutely, I’d love that. How far away are you staying? You’re sure there’s nothing else you want to do in the city first? I don’t want to ruin any of your plans or anything, you know.” She was babbling, she realized. With a grin she forced herself to quiet down so her new companion could get a word in.
