Final Fantasy Adventu is a roleplaying forum inspired by the Final Fantasy series. Images on the site are edited by KUPO of FF:A with all source material belonging to their respective artists (i.e. Square Enix, Pixiv Fantasia, etc). The board lyrics are from the Final Fantasy song "Otherworld" composed by Nobuo Uematsu and arranged by The Black Mages II.

The biscuits and tea stared back at him from his lap under the tree. With Cassandra having effectively bailed to go... where was she even going? That meant that he himself had to cook for himself, and whoever else joined up. The fact that the biscuits seemed more shattered than crumbled was not a good sign. He stared at them for a good few moments before picking one up and trying it again. The biscuit did not budge, not for a moment at least. Then there was a soft cracking sound as a piece of the treat, rock hard, broke off and landed in his lap. He held his head down in bitter defeat. If it was something simple like searing a slab of meat over an open fire, he could do it. Anything more complicated than that, and things took a turn for the worse. Yes, he was coming to the sobering realization that without his dear apprentice, it was back to a life of dried meats and Archon Loaf.
His cooking would make Ryne and Gaia cry. Well, more like make Ryne cry, Gaia would probably give him some smart remark. She wasn't really one to actually show her emotions. Ryne, though? Poor girl wore her heart on her sleeve. Sometimes he wondered how those he left behind were doing without him. Those two especially. "Huh, wonder what those two are up to." He mused to himself. Were they alright? Did they have all the snacks they needed? Were they getting enough rest? He knew them, Ryne in particular had a tendency to push herself a bit hard, even when she ordered him to get some rest like he was some old man with bad knees. How much time had passed since he'd been plucked away from his world? Was it like they were frozen without him? When he returned, would it still be in the same place he'd left it? Would they have all written him off as dead again and moved on?
He tried taking another bite. This time he forced himself to chew it. He wouldn't let it end like this. He had to adapt, he had to overcome, like he had so many other times. It felt like chewing gravel, more like grinding it down than anything. And as it went down his throat, he almost wanted to cry from how much it felt like razors cutting apart his throat. This food sucked, and he really needed to find himself an actual cook. He did not want to go back to jerky and loaf.
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Rosa had been so kind to her! Ryne was quite sure she would not have made it as safely as she had into the city without the kind woman tending to her weary body and mind. Traveling to another world was a sincerely draining experience and she wondered how Alex and Cassie were able to do so without complaint. No doubt the magic from the Exarch made it easy once the man had finally gotten it right! But at present she was doing her best to explore this port-side city to get herself used to it's layout. It easily rivaled the size of the Crystarium and she could admit to herself that she felt a little overwhelmed. [break][break]
There was such a calmness about being so close to the sea, though! Ryne could only remember seeing the sea within the past couple of years of her life after Thancred had liberated her from her cage. No, Ran'jit had ensured she remained within the lower levels of Eulmore away from any temptations of the world beyond it to ensure her complacency. If the Scions had not been pulled to the First, then she would never have known better or that the world had plenty to offer even in its past state. Shaking those thoughts away, Ryne decided to visit the nearby park she could see to rest for a little while. [break][break]
The weather was warm enough and the sun felt quite wonderful against her cheeks. Even though the sky over Norvrandt had been filled with endless light for a century it could not compare to true sunlight. There was a much less oppressive and harsh quality to it, and she had been pleased to notice this world also held a night sky! Ryne began to walk around aimlessly for several moments before the sight of a man beneath a tree had her pausing. That messy hair was quite familiar as was the rather disgusted expression he wore. Oh, yes, she would recognize that look anywhere when said man ate any cooking that was his own! [break][break]
Ryne was already running before she could help herself and that was how Alex would find himself tumbling over from her weight as she nearly tackled him. "Alex, you're here as well! Are you alright? How long have you been here? Is Cassie here as well? The other Scions?" Questions tumbled from her lips unbidden as she clung to him tightly.
You know, it was a strange sensation. Going from the disgusting taste of your biscuits to feeling something small and warm bowl you over and latch on for dear life. Huh, speak of the devil, right? Alex blinked a few times, taking a few moments to register what was going on for a moment before one hand slowly reached over to gently pat the young girl on the head, running his hand through her hair in an affectionate manner. That was when he noticed the off thing about said hair. "Ryne? Or, wait, your hair, would it still be Minifili--err, Minfilia?" Would her eyes still be regular blue or that pupiless sapphire that she had when she was the Oracle of Light. He really hoped they would be, well, normal. The pupiless eyes helped create this image where pretty much any stare from her was some kind of sad look like a kicked puppy. Honestly, it was a talent of hers.
It took blinking a couple more times, but then, "Wait, you remember me?" So, yeah, then maybe his fortunes were starting to turn around! Cassandra remembered him, having been the first, thank the Twelve. He found himself sitting up a bit, letting Ryne continue clinging to him. She was really quite small, so for him, her weight didn't really mean much of anything. He looked at the remnants of his meal, dashed away in the grass simply by virtue of the contact. Right, now that he thought about it, he was probably better off not eating than eating whatever that was. He didn't even react there, didn't want the poor girl thinking she'd been something wrong. "But let's slow down first. One thing at a time." Get her up to speed.
So, he would open up with the first question. "Cassie is here." He'd met her, he'd brought her back to his place. She had completely and totally betrayed his trust and abandoned him when the going got tough and now he was stuck in this position. Right, nothing he could do about that. It bummed him out, whoever she was running off--Ooooh, did she finally find someone? Maybe that was it. She was approaching 25, maybe she didn't want to be seen as some kind of Starlight Cake? Huh, maybe that was it. But, the other Scions, right. Planting his hands against the ground, he felt himself relax a little. "And I've seen Thancred briefly but haven't seen him since." Granted, he wasn't sure how well that would go over for Ryne. He had... questions. Namely why her greatest fear wound up being Thancred. Granted, he hadn't gotten a great look at him in that one fight.
[attr="class","ayab-text"] Oh, yes, her hair had changed when she had come here. Ryne looked up at Alex with the same, eery blue eyes she had held while under Minfilia's influence as the Oracle. She still could not quite come to terms with the reversal in her appearance and the blow it had given her. It felt as if she had taken several steps back into growing into her own person in a way. Now she resembled the girl she had been trying to grow up from. Ryne knew that it did not truly change the growth she had made during her journey, but she could not help the way she felt. "It's Ryne. I don't know why I appear as such now, but I am still myself beneath it." [break][break]
Her head tilted to the side as she regarded him curiously at his odd question. Why would she not remember him? Had no one else remembered him here on this world? Wherever this world was. Another reflection of the Source? No, Ryne did not think so at all. The pull from Hydaelyn she normally felt was non-existent and everything just felt off. Ryne did continue to cling to Alex even as he sat up, though. The affection showed to her was very much welcome as it always was to the touch-starved girl. It was the reason she had clung to Cassandra so much during their journey, as the older woman was always happy to show it to her openly. [break][break]
"Oh, that's wonderful! I am so happy she is here with you," she replied with a bright smile. There did seem to be more to the story, though. There was a tenseness to Alex when he spoke of his fellow Warrior and she wondered what had happened. Most likely a misunderstanding as even she knew Alex was not always the best at understanding others well. He certainly tried his best! But his way of thinking could be quite strange even to herself. Thancred was here, too? "That is unfortunate, but seeing you here is more than enough for now. I'm sure we shall cross paths with the others in due time." Another optimistic smile before she suddenly realized the fallen biscuits on the ground. Oh, no, those looked so sad. [break][break]
"Alex...were you going to eat those? They look stale and burnt."
There'd always been something off about them. Oh, Ryne always looked sad by nature, but those oracle eyes just made her look like a constant kicked puppy no matter what. Part of him had been all too glad when those were gone. If they were back, that meant he was going to have to deal with them all over again. While Ryne was normally responsible and generally didn't ask for much, the problem was that when she actually did want something, she'd always asked with this sad puppy look, even if she wasn't actually sad about it. She usually wasn't, but it was what those eyes wound up conveying. Between Alex's spending habits and his difficulty in saying no to what was... basically his adopted daughter, now that he thought about it, the coin purse usually was drained fairly fast.
Knowing just how much the poor girl enjoyed some manner of physical affection, he just continued to pat her until she brought up the failed attempt at biscuits. Alexander closed his eyes solemnly, recalling the bitter memory of it all. How was he to explain something so delicate to Ryne without breaking her heart? He knew of no way, and quietly resolved that she would know the truth of the matter, no matter how much it may hurt her in the long run. "Cassandra abandoned me." He said simply, quietly. It was obvious enough; without Cassandra there, he was kind of hopeless. He'd never really learned to make the fancy dishes she could. For him, simply roasting something over an open fire was good enough, especially where he was from.
He hoped Caius at least appreciated what he got.
He looked at the biscuits, well no way he could eat them now. Or could he? What was a little dirt to the Warrior of Light to begin with? "Since then, I have had to return to my own cooking. It is trial that I have taken before, and one that I can take again." For he was fierce and resilient, and he would not be cowed by something so simple as the greatest chef he'd ever known bailing on him to go make food for the rival company. Nope, he was in no way bothered by this. Not even a little, and he would definitely not be showing it to a fifteen year old child.
