[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie’s vacation to the Pale Coast hadn’t exactly ended like she’d expected. First there was a monster, then a handsome rescuer, then a fight on dragonback. Okay, it had honestly been way better than she expected, but still. After Caius and Vordun had dropped her off safely in Torensten, she’d gone back to her daily life. But there was something missing now, something she craved. The brief bit of action made her long for more. She remembered the rush of adrenaline and the satisfaction at actually doing something meaningful. [break][break] She still didn’t remember enough of her old life to truly know what her life had been like, but she was becoming more and more certain that she hadn’t lived a calm and peaceful existence. No, Jessie felt certain she sought action and adventure there too. And now that she had tasted it here in Zephon, she needed more. [break][break] Caius’ offer to check out the Dragonblades and train together stuck with her. Even as she went back to her boring, calm life in the city she knew she would certainly take him up on it. She even polished and cleaned her gun in anticipation. And bought a couple of short blades to train with. She wasn’t the worst at swordplay, but she certainly needed help translating her knowledge of choreography into real-world fighting. [break][break] Finally, she found spare time in her busy schedule. She’d even put in a preemptive leave-of-absence with her acting troupe for the near future. She was ready to see more of this new world, to adventure, and to make a difference. And the first logical step seemed like finding Caius again and training with the Dragonblades. [break][break] She stood at the door to the mercenary group’s base of operation and took a deep breath, gaining the courage to knock. She wore a simple outfit of stretchy black leggings, a long blue tunic, and sturdy boots. Her gun and blades were strapped to a thick belt across her waist and her hair was tied back with a blue ribbon she bought with Mikoto. She hoped she looked serious and like she knew what she was doing. She wasn’t just a lost city girl, she could be a real force to be reckoned with. [break][break] Jessie raised her hand and knocked on the large door. She stepped back and waited, hoping it would be Caius who came out to greet her.

Lol Celes why are you such a trainwreck?
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
What was she doing?
Celes didn’t know anymore. Not really. She was going to get her life together. She was going to build something that she never could have before, and maybe, just maybe, she was going to be happy. Now she didn’t know. What was she going to do about the Dragonblades? About the life she’d built? About Caius?
What was she doing? She couldn’t answer the question.
The Wyvern’s Rest was nearly empty that day. Cancelled for rain. It had been raining an awful lot lately, but she supposed that was tropical weather for you. A few mercenaries had stopped by looking for work, but that was it. No training when there was mud. No slipping and embarrassing herself if she could help it. She sat on one the couches, half-sprawled sideways with a book in her hand in a lame attempt to distract herself from thoughts that dominated her mind.
Would she have been better off in that other world -- ruined and miserable and waiting for death? At least then she’d been trying to help people. Then again, she’d also been preparing for a suicide mission against a mad god so who was the winner here, really?
There was a knock on the door.
Celes sat up, startled. A look out the window showed that there was a break from the rain. Maybe someone had thought it was a good time to stop by? Still, the sudden noise had her heart racing. Stupid. She stood, dog-earring her book as she set it aside. She wasn’t in that world anymore. So why did she still smell the ghost of sulfur?
Celes opened the door a crack, peering outside. She’d expected some bulky man with a half-dulled broadsword and a grizzled beard -- trying too hard like so many of the others. Instead, she found a girl. She was shorter than Celes and smaller too. She was dressed for combat sans armor, and Celes blinked at her.
”Er. Can I help you?”
Not the best way to greet a prospective client, was it?
”Oh. I mean…” Celes opened the door wider. ”Come in. Before it starts raining again.” She gestured lamely inside and then stood back, crossing her arms. Nice. She could do nice. And welcoming. And helpful. Why was it that Caius always had her manning the desk again?
”This is the Wyvern’s Rest,” she said. ”Home of the Dragonblades. We take all kinds of cases.” She wasn’t used to people knocking, she realized. That’s why she didn’t know what she was saying. Usually they just shoved the doors open and marched right to her, and she could give them a hard look like they should have knocked, and that put her on the upper foot. Instead, this girl had actually done what she was supposed to.
Well that was...polite.
”I’m Celes.” Celes nodded towards her. ”And you are?”
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie glanced up at the sky as she waited on the doorstep to Wyvern’s Rest. Dark clouds drifted above, blocking all but a few rays of sunlight. The morning had been dreary and drizzly but for now there was a break in the inclimate weather. [break][break] She shifted nervously from foot to foot. No one came immediately. Was this stupid? Should she have waited until Caius found her and invited her on another adventure? Maybe she was being over-eager. She had certainly been accused of it before. As she was about to flee, rethinking her decision to come here so soon, the door opened a crack and someone peered out at her. She could see bright blue eyes.[break][break] The person at the door was decidedly not Caius. A blonde woman greeted her, looking vaguely confused as she appraised Jessie. She felt instantly a little self-conscious under the other woman’s gaze. There was something about her that spoke of a quiet strength and power that Jessie worried she would fail to ever rival. Was this woman judging her as weak-looking and soft? Was she used to more hardened soldiers and veterans of many wars? Jessie probably didn’t hold up to most who came seeking to train with the Dragonblades.[break][break] The woman’s first words weren’t exactly friendly but she seemed to catch herself, opening the door and inviting Jessie in. She slipped in through the open door and smiled as the other woman gave her a business-like greeting and explanation of Wyvern’s Rest. She introduced herself as Celes and asked Jessie’s. “Nice to meet you,” Jessie said politely with another friendly smile. “My name’s Jessie.” She glanced around the room they were in. There was a desk and a few couches and chairs. It was a pretty simple, nondescript sitting or waiting room. She didn’t see or hear anyone else around except Celes. [break][break] “I was just wondering, is Caius here today?” Might as well ask at least.

Even when she's trying to be nice, she's still a little rude
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
The girl seemed friendly enough, and Celes nodded back in kind. ”Nice to meet you.” She didn’t really have much else to say to Jessie -- not upfront at least. She tried to keep on as professional a face as she could. She was tired.
”Caius isn’t here right now. He's out on some adventure or another, I imagine. I can’t keep track of all the jobs he takes, and that’s my job. Keeping track of them, I mean.” She paused. Why did this woman want Caius so badly? Well, maybe badly wasn’t the right word, but it seemed a little strange to come all this way just looking for him.
”Why do you ask?” He’d probably helped her before -- whatever trouble they’d gotten themselves into. That sounded like Caius. Celes was beginning to wonder if the whole world didn’t know him at this point. Celes was starting to feel popular by association.
That was a new feeling. The closest she’d come to “popular” before was “infamous”.
”If there’s something you need help with, I should be able to handle it just as well. Or I can find someone who can manage it a little better. We have a master healer, gunner, martial artist, and I think a knight? Caius wasn’t really clear on that one.”
Or what exactly a ’knight’ entailed. Celes imagined it a Magiteck knight, and that did nothing for her mood. Oh good, someone else like her. Maybe they could be friends.
”So what do you need? Or were you really just here to see him?” Celes smiled awkwardly. ”Caius is a little better with a sword than friends.” If it really was a casual visit then that would be a first.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]The other woman seemed to not be super friendly. Maybe not overly rude, but certainly not what Jessie would call nice. Oh well. Jessie kept her smile firmly in place and tried to exude enough friendliness for both of them. Caius wasn’t there, according to Celes which caused Jessie to deflate just a little. Well, what had she really expected? He didn’t seem the type to hang out at the headquarters for too long at a time. [break][break] Caius was likely out on another job or adventure, according to her. It sounded like he wasn’t the best about informing the rest of the mercenaries where he was off or what he was doing. That didn’t strike her as surprising at all. “Oh, I was just asking because he helped me out against a couple monsters in the Pale Coast recently. I wasn’t prepared for a fight and he and Vordun kind of saved me. We talked and he told me about the Dragonblades and the training ground. I guess I was hoping he’d be here to show me around a bit and maybe train.” She was rambling. Jessie realized that a little too late, but eventually shut up and gave the other woman a slightly sheepish smile. [break][break] “Oh, well. In my home world I’m pretty sure I was good with firearms and explosives. I wasn’t sure if you had any target training set up here? It would be good to relearn some stuff I’ve forgotten. And Caius mentioned helping me out with swordplay if I wanted to learn. I’ve only used props before.”Stop it. Rambling again. [break][break] The list of other Dragonblade members intrigued her, though. She wondered who they were, especially the gunner. Maybe she should meet with that person sometime? She didn’t think she wanted to actually join the mercenary organization, but they certainly sounded like a good resource to help her relearn her fighting techniques. [break][break] Celes seemed to imply that Caius wasn’t great with friends, which honestly surprised Jessie a bit. He seemed perfectly nice and friendly with her. “Oh, well. I guess I was mostly hoping to see him,” Jessie shrugged. “Maybe I read things wrong, but he seemed friendly when we met. I don’t want to take up too much of your time if you’re busy, though. But if there’s a training yard that’s free to use I might want to check it out.”

This is how girls bond, right?
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Caius had helped Jessie fight monsters along the coast. Now that sounded like the Caius she knew. The girl seemed fond of him, and now that she knew the story, that didn’t seem so strange either. Caius might have been a fumbling mess with people, but he knew how to handle a sword and just about everything to do with it. He was persuasive in a way that she could never be. He knew how to catch someone’s interest, and he was always looking to take them under his wing. She admired that about him, she supposed.
She might have been more logical, but she couldn’t think of a single other thing that she knew better than he did.
”Well, you’re in the right place,” she said. She tried for a welcoming smile. She wasn’t very good at it. ”I used to be a general so I handle most of the training around here. Not that I know much about guns. We have a range out back for archery and things like that. Caius uses it sometimes.” So it must have been just as good for firearms, right? She didn’t know.
”Now, if you want to learn a sword, that's where I can help you. We’re not busy. The rain made sure of that.” She looked out the window towards the cloudy, misted skies. The rain hadn’t come back yet, and with the tropical weather maybe it never would, but that didn’t mean that she was expecting much business either way. ”I’ll show you around.”
She left out the back, making sure that she was following. Really, this was probably the best she could have expected. She was bored. There wasn’t anyone around. She’d just have wasted her time all day otherwise.
”I’m sure you didn’t read it wrong,” Celes said. ”Caius likes people. It’s just that he’s a little clumsy without a sword in his hand.” She smiled, a little more genuinely this time. If he could wield words the same way that he could wield a blade then the Dragonblades would be full to bursting by now. ”I’ll let him know you came by. I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.”
The training yard was a little muddy, but Celes’ high boots kept her dry, and it looked like Jessie was dressed practically enough. They passed the sword-scarred dummies and the ring for sparring before Jessie brought her to the very back where Caius had set up a target range. It wasn’t much -- just a set of circularly carved boards of painted woods kept at a distance -- but Caius seemed to think it was enough so she hoped the girl wouldn’t be too disappointed.
”This is what he uses,” Celes said. ”I know it’s not much, but…”
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Celes seemed to open up a little and become more welcoming once Jessie explained why she was there and what she wanted. But the other woman’s smile still seemed a tad forced. Like she wasn't entirely used to the expression. Oh well, she was being friendly enough telling Jessie about the training complex. She might have come here to find Caius but she’d certainly make the most of her time with Celes instead. [break][break] She was intrigued by the sound of an archery range out back. That sounded like just what she needed to hone her skills. But then Celes mentioned that she could help her with swordplay. Well… she looked at the other woman, this former general, and perked up. She could tell just from the way Celes moved and held herself that she was powerful and strong despite her beauty. Maybe learning swordplay from another woman would be better. Surely there were differences in how you had to move and react depending on body weight and musculature. [break][break] Jessie smiled enthusiastically and followed Celes out into the back training yard. “Thank you!” she said earnestly as they stepped out into the moist post-rain air. The training yard was muddy and Jessie was thankful she’d chosen practical, dark clothing. Her boots squelched into the mud as she trotted dutifully after Celes. Their conversation turned to Caius again. Celes reassured her that he just wasn’t always the best with words. “You seem to know him well,” she commented. “How long have the two of you worked together with the Dragonblades?” [break][break] The target range wasn’t much, but it was enough. It was practical and that’s all that mattered. “Hey, that’s all you really need,” she assured Celes with a shrug. “I don’t need something fancy, just somewhere I can practice without alarming the rest of the residents of Torensten.” She was itching to try it out, to see if she could hit the targets with any accuracy. But while she still had Celes’ attention she wanted to focus on something else first. [break][break] Jessie turned back to face the blonde woman. “But you mentioned learning to use a sword. Would you be willing to go over the basics with me? Like I said, I’ve never used one in actual combat but I’m fairly used to holding and wielding them at least.” She gave her a hopeful grin.

Just two girls bonding over weaponry
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
”With the Dragonblades? Oh about…” How long had it been? It felt like forever. ”A year?” She’d go with that.
”We started it together. It was hard, living as a mercenary on our own. We’re not from here. It was a shock.” To say the least. It had taken her longer than she wanted to admit, getting used to the clean air and green earth. Even the quiet chirping of birds or the rustle of leaves had set her on edge. It had all felt like a surreal dream -- a product of her broken imagination.
At this point, she didn’t much care if she’d gone crazy. This was her life. There was no way she would ever let anything drag her back into her old one.
”But we worked together for a while and eventually decided that we’d try to make something of it. Most of the men who come by are just trying to make a name for themselves, but we’ve been able to help plenty of people like us. Even if it’s just to orient them a little.”
That was the best part, Celes thought. She’d had the ’this is where you are, this is what’s happening’ talk more times than she could count, but it always felt a little rewarding, guiding them through it. She wished that she’d had someone to do the same. Instead, she’d woken up in a forest that shouldn’t have existed and had wandered her way out into a confusing world which meant absolutely nothing to her. She wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Or most anyone at least. She knew a few people who she’d rather like to get dragged into a dimensional hole never to be seen again.
Celes laughed at Jessie’s assessment of their training yard. ”That’s us. Nothing fancy.” Celes wouldn’t have known how to be fancy if she’d tried. She’d grown up in the military, after all. Even at its flashiest, it was all about practicality.
”You want to learn a sword?” she asked, mildly surprised. She’d offered, of course, but she hadn’t expected her to agree. Most people didn’t. Particularly not someone with training in something else like magic or guns. Celes straightened. It wasn’t often that someone took an interest in what she did. Not willingly, anyway.
”It’s not a problem at all,” she said, smiling. ”Like I said, I didn’t have much to do today anyway. I usually train the mercenaries in combat, but they’re…” She searched for the word. ”Stubborn.”
Indignant. Prideful. Unwilling to properly listen or even fully believe that she had skills to listen to.
Men.
”We have plenty of extra swords if you want to start now. There’s longswords, shortswords, rapiers…” She gestured to the storage space where they kept them. ”Well, they’re over there if you want to look at them. Some are easier to handle than others.”
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie was deciding she liked Celes. The other woman was certainly more serious and no-nonsense than Jessie, but she admired her strength and resolve. She seemed like someone Jessie would definitely like to have beside her in a fight. And it was obvious to see how she and Caius worked well together with the Dragonblades mercenary group. [break][break] She smiled at the thought of the Dragonblades helping out other travelers like her from distant lands. Honestly, she wished she’d found them sooner. She had enjoyed her time with the troupe, but maybe if she’d met someone like Celes or Caius she could have found a more meaningful purpose here sooner. “You guys are doing good work here. It’s gotta be great to find people who can help out when we first wake up in a strange world.” [break][break] Celes seemed pleasantly surprised when Jessie was enthusiastic about learning to use a sword. She grinned in return, she had offered. “Yeah! This isn’t a place where I can always rely on guns. Ammunition isn’t always the easiest to come by. And I’m not exactly great with magic, I just have a few tricks up my sleeve.” She giggled at the description of most of the mercenaries as stubborn. She could only imagine the type of fool-hardy men who came here. They probably took one look at this beautiful, thin woman and thought they knew better than anything she could teach them. [break][break] Jessie wasn’t anywhere near that dumb. She’d spent plenty of time with women far stronger than her even if she couldn’t remember the exact details. And she could easily recognize Celes’ strength, both in body and mind. No, she wasn’t dumb enough to underestimate her. Jessie knew she could wipe the floor with her. “Men are like that sometimes,” she commented with a wink and wandered over to the swords Celes gestured towards. [break][break] She looked over the selection. Hmmm. Two-handed or one-handed? The one she’d used in her plays was a massive greatsword but that wasn’t exactly intelligent for someone like her to use in real life. Though… it brought back some flashes of memory. In the end, she settled on a thin longsword. It was a two-hander for her, but light enough that she could maneuver it fairly well. And she could hold it in just one if the need arose. “I like the feel of this one,” Jessie commented and gave it a few experimental swipes through the air. Then she turned to face Celes expectantly. “Sorry if I make a bunch of dumb beginner mistakes!”

[attr="class","jrinfo"]The beginnings of friendship over swords. / Celes Chere
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Celes laughed. She couldn’t help it, being around someone like Jessie. Normally, she’d be put off by someone who talked so much, but it felt different somehow. It was like Jessie lit a fire wherever she went, and now Celes was caught in it, and she could only be swept along in all the enthusiasm. She wondered if Jessie was ever discouraged or quiet. She must have been, but she couldn’t imagine it.
Maybe when she’d first come here? Celes couldn’t imagine anyone facing that with a positive attitude.
”I think Caius uses magic ammunition?” Celes guessed. She’d never really thought about it before. Maybe she’d ask later. ”I know they have guns like yours in Sonora. Not that I like going there.”
And she hadn’t. Not in over a year, probably. Had it really been that long?
”I can use magic and a sword. And pilot magictech armor, I suppose.” Not that there was any around here. They were a product of the empire, after all. No empire, no magitech. ”I have a friend who would love to take apart a gun like yours. He’s an engineer. He invents all sorts of things. He made an autocrossbow that can fire half a dozen arrows in seconds.”
That seemed rather quaint compared to the kind of technology she’d seen here, but she’d thought it was genius. Even if she’d never told him.
Celes watched as Jessie considered all the different swords. Maybe Celes should have helped guide her in what would work best for her. Then again, that would have taken extra effort. Jessie seemed familiar enough with them to pick out a two-handed longsword for herself. It was lightweight which was good. Celes laughed.
”Everyone makes beginner mistakes,” she said. ”I used to be a general in the military. I know all about teaching.” Not that she’d really worked the job for long. She’d been eighteen at the time she’d left, after all. Though that had given her enough time to conquer a city.
Celes swallowed that memory back. It had been a source of pride at the time. Now it was only shameful.
Celes found a training sword of her own and tested its weight in her hands. It wasn’t her usual runic sword, but its blade was dull which made it perfect for training. Or training other soldiers at least. While Celes had enough control to keep her partner from harm, she couldn’t account for said partner stumbling directly into the sharp side of her blade. At least she also knew enough healing magic to keep them alive.
”Well, let’s get to it,” Celes said with a dry smile. She walked out to the center of the hard, ready to instruct her on the basics first before starting a very easy spar. It was all up to Jessie how long they went. Celes had all day.
