ne thing she had begun to notice was the smell. Tifa hadn't noticed before, but as her memories slowly came back to her she had picked up on othe difference. There was a different smell to Sonora from Midgar. Putting her finger on it was difficult, but it likely had something to do with the mako Midgar used to power the city. There was a familiar mix in their too, Tifa picking up on it like the scent of a mixed drink. Iron and steel had their own smell that was in the air, and also the scent of oil lingered about. But there was no mako, which was replaced by something else. So other kind of exhaust perhaps. It wasn't anymore pleasing to the senses.
Well, she'd get used to it eventually. Just like before. Walking around a corner, she took in Sonora.
Tifa didn't really get days off anymore. That was her own doing, to be fair, but once she had taken up her vigilante duties she wasn't really allowed to stop now. So when she wasn't at the bar, she was wandering the air making sure there was no trouble. she walked around a corner and looked up along the metallic spires that made up the city. Neon signs glared back at her. The architectural mishmash wasn't pretty, but it was familiar. The din of the city was all around, people scattered about. Some heading off to whatever their life had next to them, some sitting against the walls with nowhere else to go. Tifa wished she could help them all, but with little to her own name, she really had nothing to give. She could do nothing but fight to try and make this place a bit safer for everyone. If that was even possible. Well, she'd never know if she didn't try, so here she was. Tifa sighed and continued forward upon her planned patrol route.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
This place sucked. He'd never really had a chance to go to this Sonora, and now he wasn't sure if it was a good idea at all. Oh it was a city that never slept, and there was something neat about that; like some kind of city sized Gold Saucer. He wondered then if he'd find anyone from that family around here. As weird as he was, even Alex would admit that part of him missed Hildibrand, wherever he was. He hoped that the stars lit his path and that he was solving mysteries even now. But aside from that, it was awful! First off, the place was freezing. He'd dealt with it in Ishgard because he, well, he'd kind of been framed for regicide, where else was he gonna go? At least he'd accounted for that by wearing some winter clothes, but there were still some issues that he had!
There was the smell. Some kind of toxic smell that he'd never even known until now, and it was almost nauseating. Right now, he rather liked the idea of getting some fresh air somewhere else, so he could get the stench of this place off of him. Then there was the rampant xenophobia. He supposed he should be used to that by now, but everywhere he went, he seemed singled out as an outsider by some people. Others seemed a bit more accepting, though perhaps that was because his clothes seemed to match up with quite a few people here. In short, he wasn't running around in a suit of armor, so he blended in just a little bit better, but the occasional crinkled nose at the smell of the exhaust gave him away in short order; he was an outsider, and he was not welcome.
He found himself walking alongside some woman he didn't recognize; long, flowing brown hair tied into a tail at the end. She walked with a stride that denoted strength and confidence. He was about to strike up a conversation, opened his mouth even, when his head jerked to the side as some guy walked by across the street, headed towards the entertainment sector; was that a skunk stripe he noticed on a man in a suit? No, no, no, he was just imagining that. He had to be. If Emet-Selch were in this world, he'd know it by now. Even then, it wasn't exactly a fashion that the Ascian had invented. Other people likely had one, too. Right, just... take his mind off it, then. He was just paranoid. "Bit chilly tonight." He spoke up to the brunette. Just some minor small talk, something to give himself something to focus on.
ifa became aware that someone had come into step with her as she headed off. The person didn't say anything, he was just close. She set herself on guard for any attacks. He might be covering her flank for an ambush up ahead. They walked on like this for a bit with no attack coming. Tifa wondered what this potential stalker had in mind, when he suddenly spoke to her. Tifa looked around at him. He was commenting on the weather? Well, that was odd and a little random. Not to mention something that really didn't happen much in Sonora. People generally kept to themselves.
"Er.." was her initial reaction as she took in this man. Crimson coloured eyes looked him over. Well, he didn't look like a member of one of the street gangs. But his striking up a casual conversation with a stranger on the street suggested he wasn't from around here. An outsider actually did make a lot of sense. Her inquisitive look changed to a slight, friendly smile. She had a bad habit of not being cautious enough, especially around Sonora, but she couldn't help giving people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it was the bartender in her, but he seemed friendly enough. Or maybe she was just a huge fool.
"Well, we are up in the mountains. A bit of a chill is to be expected." she responded. Tifa herself in contrast to the man and his winter gear was in her usual tank and miniskirt. The cold didn't really bother her much. Maybe it was her training, or the fact she had grown up in a mountain town that made it easier for her to bear, but she couldn't say the cold ever bothered her that much.
"So, can I help you with something, Mister?" she asked, wondering if there was a particular reason he had struck up a conversation.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Alex raised an eyebrow. It's called small talk, lady. Well, that's what he wants to say, but he also doesn't want to be rude. Then again, he wasn't exactly sure if he should be surprised. Most everyone in Sonora since he got here had been distrustful of him at best, and outright hostile at worst. Ah, to be back in Ishgard. He supposed he should be thankful this place wasn't run by a batshit insane religious figure hellbent on using dragon eyes to conquer the world. "Says the lady in a tank top and miniskirt. You must be used to the cold." Or a Monk, if her figure and lack of weapons were anything to go by, as his eyes trailed up and down the woman next to him. He was pretty sure Lyse had done that whole "sit under a freezing waterfall and medi--" No, no she hadn't. She was a bit too... gungho for something like that. Now that he thought about it, most Monks were pretty hot blooded.
Hot blooded. Ha, that'd explain the cold resistance. Man, he was a riot.
Mister...? "Sorel. Alexander Sorel." God, mister. Yes it was completely accurate but it still made him feel too old! He wasn't that old, not chronologically! He only felt it in his soul after all the horrible shit he'd been through. Images of trauma passed through his mind as his stare became vacant for only the briefest of moments before refocusing. Still, Alex would confirm the suspicions that he didn't know she was even having. "First time here." Sure enough, he was indeed an outsider, who was doing outsider things, and getting the outsider treatment from most everyone else. "And frankly, I have no idea where I'm going or where I can even get work." Being an adventurer meant building networks and contacts. That was not his forte. That was always more Alphinaud's thing, really.
Still, that also meant this lady could probably help. "So, knowing the place a little better would be nice, if you don't mind." Maybe a tour or something. Who knows, maybe she'd have a job for him? Then again, looking at her, he wasn't sure what exactly she'd need from him that she couldn't just do herself.
ifa nodded when he remarked on her attire and gave his theory on the matter. He was certainly right there.
"I can handle a bit of a chill, yeah." she agreed. She had even climbed the Great Glacier in this attire. Now that had been cold. By comparison, Sonora might as well be Costa del Sol. The man introduced himself and confirmed her was a newbie in these parts as if that wasn't obvious.
"I figured." Tifa replied with a small smile, "People don't often walk up and talk to strangers in the street around here. You're more likely to get stabbed and robbed then any kind of assistance, so most people tend to err on the side of caution." she explained. It was a sad reality, but an accurate one. Tifa didn't usually have people talking to her unless she was in the bar. That was were people wouldn't stop talking. Though Tifa did enjoy when people opened up.
"Depends on the kind of work you want. Sonora has plenty of opportunities, though you're not in the best side of the city for it. You want to head up to the richer part of town. More gil flowing, more opportunities. In this area there's more people looking for work than offering." she told him, "If you like, I can show you the way out of the slums? This city is quite large and it's easy to get turned around. Getting lost here is a good way to end up surrounded by street thugs, especially when you look like you might belong to a higher class." Tofa said, glancing at his attire. He had the look of someone with at least a bit of cash, and even the warm clothes would be worth something to the people around here. And said people weren't afraid of a little violence to get what they wanted.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Was he really that obvious? He looked at himself, then at the others. Jeez, he really did kind of stand out here with that luxurious fur coat, didn't he? In fairness, he'd paid a pretty gil to have it made. Most of his funds had gone into getting his exhaustive wardrobe back. Right, so, it was probably for the best that Cassandra handle the gil from here on out. Well, not really. That was a depressing piece of info to learn from the lady though. Just talking to people got you stabbed and robbed? This place really sucked. Oh, but if he only knew how shitty this place would get in the future. "Yes, well, I would like to avoid being stabbed if at all possible." He gave a sheepish smile at his own realization. Or shot, or poisoned, or beaten, that sort of thing. He doubted that it'd kill him, if nothing else, his time in the world had given him the amazing ability to take a beating and somehow not die.
He'd rather have the ability to not get hit. And he did, sometimes. But alas. He was more the meatshield compared to Cassandra. "I'm an adventurer, so pretty much anything." He responded, breath visible with each word. He did take another quick scan. Didn't want anyone stabbing them, at least. Adventurer was really just another word for mercenary. A far less ugly word, too. Mercenary implied that he'd do anything for moment. But, now that he thought about it. Even if there wasn't a lot of gil involved, there would probably be something that fit the bill of what he was after. "If you could show me around here first though, I'd appreciate it." If he was going to be coming to Sonora, it would likely be best to have a tour guide.
Alex would wait for her to show him around. Plus, you know, wasn't that bad of a view, at least. Though he did cough slightly. "You know, you say you're fine with it, but I'd feel a bit like an ass if I didn't, so are you sure you don't want to wear my jacket or something?" Yeah, she was fine, sure, but it had to be freezing. He wasn't sure how she could stay out like that without anything. And then one more thing hit him as his head tilted for a moment before looking back at her. "You know, you asked my name but never gave me yours, Miss...?" It wasn't fair if she had his name, but not the inverse!
ell, the man was seeming nice enough at least. That was refreshing in it's own right. Far too many depressed people around here, unfortunately. Understandably so, but it was still nice to find someone not in a bad mood. Or maybe it was just because she worked in a bar that she found all of the soul-withered people who were looking for a reprieve. Maybe she just needed to get out more. Not a lot of time for that though. Tifa chuckled at his little joke about preferring not to get stabbed then listened to him explaining that he was an adventurer.
"An adventurer, eh? Sounds exciting." Tifa replied. She wasn't much of one herself, but she'd certainly had quite an adventure of her own once upon a time. Also very exciting, but also very dangerous. This guy could probably handle himself just fine if a thug tried to pick a fight with him though, if that was his profession, "In that case, I'm sure you'll find something for work in the better parts of town." she added.
"Well, I can show you around this area but there isn't all that much to see. Shops all over selling low quality goods all over the place. Heading a bit more Northeast can lead us to Velvet Street. It's the, shall we say, mature area around here. If that's your kind of thing," Velvet Street reminded Tifa of Sector 6. Thankfully no Don Corneo there, as far as she knew. That was a relief, though odds were someone similar was running the show, "The southern directions just lead to more of the slums areas. Mostly gang turf all over and best avoided. Especially the Scrapyard. You could probably find work around there but it would be the kind of ill repute." she said. Then she pointed eastward.
"That way is Seventh Heaven. It's the bar I work at and just about the only safe haven from gangs in the slums at the moment." she told him. Tifa left out the part where she was the reason for that, "Yup, just North we want to go, really. That gets you out of the slums and into the middle class area where things pick up quite a bit, then you can find the rich part of the city where all the big wigs are. That was is certainly better for job hunting." she informed him. She started to lead the way in that direction. Once they got onto the cab routes he could probably just take one to where he wanted to go. Tifa didn't really know the upper class area of town as well as the slums. This was where she spent all of her time.
"No thanks!" Tifa replied to the offered coat, "I really am fine. I grew up in a small town with a similar climate. This isn't even all that cold to me." plus she knew a few tricks thanks to her training that helped control the body's energy flow and temperature. Then the man commented on names. Technically, Tifa never had actually asked him for his name. She had just called him 'Mister' and then he had offered it. Still, she didn't have a reason not to share her name and fair was fair.
"Right you are! I'm Tifa Lockhart, nice to meet you!" she said, flashing him a grin.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
He listened intently. The shops were good, they were things he would need to know. Low quality goods could work in a pinch if need be if he were ever on a budget. No point in visiting the velvet district, that sort of thing, well, yeah. If he really needed to scratch that itch there were other ways. But the slums, no, he'd really rather not get involved in some kind of turf war. Maybe if he were living here and really wanted to help clean up the place, maybe, but other than that? Sonora could look after its own problems. That seemed to be how they preferred it anyway, as if the outsiders or otherworlders never even existed. Maybe someday Sonora would actually make some moves and try to make that dream of theirs a reality; they seemed crazy enough to do it, anyway.
But it sounded like he had a good idea of where to go at least. Which meant once he was done here he should be heading north for the better parts of town. Maybe someone would have some work for him. Oh he was sure there were jobs to be done here, but they'd likely be too shady for his liking. No, he was quite done with shady stuff for a lifetime. "Still, thanks again, Ms. Lockhart." He said, offering a smile and a small bow in gratitude. Jeez, a name like that was a bit on the nose, wasn't it? Either that or you got to be really lucky to get a last name like that. He wish he had a neat one like Hawke or something.
Wait, did she say she worked at a bar? Alex perked up when he remembered that. He could honestly go for something that would warm the bones. "You're a bartender?" He asked, just to make sure, before following it up with a... rather specific request. "You wouldn't know how to make a Rum Martinez by any chance, would you?" Did she include the cigar or no? No, that was irrelevant, a smoky drink sounded pretty good though. Or wait, no, this was Sonora and it was utterly freezing, then the best choice would be... "Or, no, it's really cold here. What about a Peppermint Patty?" Alex murmured, holding a hand to his chin as he contemplated the possibilities! "Maybe once this tour's over I can get one of those?" Well, maybe. He'd have to find a way to make sure that he made the thing himself. She seemed nice enough, but Alex didn't quite give her "make me my drink, please" level trust yet.
