Another day, another hunt. A resurgence of bounties for monsters were appearing more frequently as of late on the bulletin boards of Torensten. Most likely, it was due to the ongoing storm over the city and near the coast, which presented Vossler with an opportunity to hone in his skills. It was a goal that he made for himself after losing to General Beatrix in their friendly spar. The University of Magi offered adventurers the opportunity to quell the storm by slaying the fiend responsible, but Vossler passed up that opportunity to focus on other tasks. Plus, he did not want a repeat of what occurred during his last encounter with one of the elemental fiends. The bounty that caught Vossler's eye involved another supply route to Provo that ran parallel to the Pale Coast. In fact, the road itself was mere meters from the sandy shore. The individual posting had already lost one supply shipment due to a band of Sahagin raiding and looting any who were unfortunate to cross their path. The ambush destroyed all of that poor merchant's stock, leaving him to post a wanted listing to recover his goods and slay the beast-tribe for good. With the job accepted, Vossler set out to the site. It was a day's walk for the Dalmascan to reach the area that the merchant described, and while the views of the coast brought back memories of Ivalice, a storm overhead inconveniently dropped heavy rains onto the area. But he came prepared. Vossler had the foresight to bring a hooded cloak that was large enough to cover his body, which he used to protect himself from getting completely drenched in the rainfall. On occasion, the storm would pause for only minutes before continuing its torrential downpour. "This is it." he stated, reaching what appeared to be scattered remains of destroyed supply wagons. Unfortunately, the wagons were picked clean and there were no signs of the Sahagin nearby. Most likely, any trace of them would have been washed away by the rain, leaving the ex-knight to scout the area for possible hideouts. "Damned rain." An arm was raised over his forehead to block the falling droplets in order to see ahead more clearly. From what Vossler could notice through the precipitation, there was a large hill where a section of the beach ended with a cliff overlooking the sea. With any luck, there would be a cave there that the beastmen would be using as a den. It was a start.

Quistis now found herself here in the middle of the mud. Her boots dug deep into the sticky road as she pushed through the wind and rain of the storm. Teeth gritted against the cold rain and brine, the taste of salt already drowning her senses. But this was nothing. She had ridden mercenary ships across seas to provide aid to additional armies. Already, she was going through possible scenarios and putting herself in a specific mental zone. There was a cold distance in her eyes as if she was far away. [break][break] Just prior, Quistis spent what funds she could to attend classes at the University of Magi. What she couldn’t afford, she snuck into an open seat. Little of her mercenary funds went to her actual upkeep, not that she required much but a roof over her head, a place to bathe, and food to munch on as she poured over tomes until late in the night. Some of the University’s staff and students may have sworn she lived in the libraries trying to get her hands on whatever she could to understand magic in Zephon and how it relates to different regions. Perhaps then she could get an idea of the lands different mystical draw points so that she could keep her own magic stocked. Battle tactics were a must to upkeep and update her current skill sets. [break][break] But more importantly, she needed to help Zell find a way back home. In this, she carefully handled the dusty scrolls and handwritten manuscripts to get an idea of Zephon’s older shrines and ancient artifacts that laid hidden. Were there fiends associated with these items? What power did they hold? She found herself rudely awoken by the librarians, whom found Quistis with her silver reading spectacles fallen down her nose, her eyes a bit red from the strain. [break][break] But not all the answers laid in lectures and old tomes. Quistis knew this very well. She needed to go out there and find them. An opportunity soon arose. Rumors about the Pale Coast grew more fervent over the last two weeks. The Magi were looking for volunteers as a state of emergency was declared. There was a dark creature lurking the waters and corruption eating at the Water Crystal. The seas and storms were raging relentlessly. Perhaps, this was a chance to find Zell a way home. Perhaps, this was a chance to find a relic to be brought back to the university for study. Imagine the past that could be gleaned from such a relic or even the possibility of finding a way to prevent a disaster like this from happening again. [break][break] No matter the secondary reason, Quistis could not stand by and watch innocents die or their homes be destroyed. They needed help. [break][break] Thus, Quistis found herself on this path and heading in the direction of the Pale Coast. She blinked the rain out of her eyes and pulled her own water-resistant cloak about her. The crystal the University gave her hung at her neck without any light. As she approached, she noticed a dark blob further up the path with some movement. Squinting, she cautiously proceeded forward. [break][break] She found not only the wrecked cart, but another man looking over it. “Are you okay?” She spoke loudly over the storm, her blue eyes peering up at him from beneath her cloak. “Is this your cart?” She was unsure what was going on here, but he seemed the only person around. Her steps led her to the ruined cart, where she studied the wreckage. It seemed the goods were taken. What was being transported? Was it for riches or food? Her eyes spotted deep prints in the mud, that pooled with rain. [break][break] “These are sahagin prints. Recent, but quickly fading in these conditions. If you aren’t a hired arm, then I suggest taking necessities and leaving.”
The Dalmascan didn't get to take more than a single step towards the ocean-side cliffs before a woman' voice jolted him. Vossler tried to contain his jerky movements, but was still startled by how silently she managed to move in on his position with him even noticing. Perhaps the sounds of the storm also masked her footsteps, but regardless, she was now here. "I am fine," he said in response to her questions on his well being. As he tried to see the female through the rain, Vossler was able to make out some small details. She was shorter than him, blonde, and had a very intelligent look about her. She spoke in a more casual manner, yet seemed to hold herself up quite well. His guess was that the woman was some sort of scholar. "Wet, but fine." The woman's following statements were directed towards the cart and Vossler's well-being. Despite the cart not being his, it was still a pleasant surprise to find someone so concerned. "No. It is not mine, but a merchant's from Torensten." Vossler paper to show her the contract that he had made with his temporary employer to recover the goods. It was wet, yet still legible. "You are correct in your identification of the Sahagin. They have ransacked his caravan and made off with the cargo. My duty is to recover them." Of course, the question had to be asked about why the blonde female was out here. It wasn't exactly close to Torensten, and her smaller frame didn't make her very physically intimidating. Perhaps a magic user he thought before actually asking her questions. "And what of you? This storm is rather dangerous. And the creatures it harbors are worse. I would assume someone travelling during this time would know how to defend themself." As the conversation carried on, the Dalmascan realized that there had not been a proper introduction yet. "My name is Vossler Azelas. I dare not force someone unwilling to embark on such a task against their own will." He paused for a moment, glancing back in the direction of the cliff he was ready to move on and get this over with. If there was a cave along the cliffs, that would provide some shelter and give him an opportunity to dry himself off. "However, I would not refuse the aid of someone proficient in magic; if they were inclined to assist me with this investigation."

She did not notice the way he jerked around to look at her. Her eyes were still beset on the ruined cart, and blinking rain out of them to clear her vision. Torensten had certainly made her feel hot and sticky. Perhaps the rain would be more tolerable if she believed it was a relief from the usual tropical weather. Her hair stuck to her cheeks and neck. [break][break] Now that he turned to face her, it seemed he wore some sort of armor. Not a merchant or cityfolk then. He spoke politely, firmly, and with an edge of command. He was used to these sort of jobs it seemed. Good. Her eyes scrolled over the contract he pressed in front of her. “I would have believed you without it.” She looked up, making eye contact. A kind smile pressed to her lips. “Then let’s recover the cargo.” She said without much of a second thought. [break][break] She turned back to the trail taking a few steps alongside the sahagin food prints. “Oh. I was heading to the harbor at the Pale Coast. I’ve no contact carried on me, except this crystal bestowed upon me by the university. I am volunteering to help stop whatever is causing this mess in the first place.” She made a vague gesture as if to emphasize the storm, sahagin, and ruined carts. Probably much worse to come. “But, I have a little time to spare. I can assist if you don’t mind me butting in.” Another smile and a curious glance. [break][break]
“Forgive me, my name is Quistis Trepe. I’m a trained mercenary, so handling a few sahagin shouldn’t be too troublesome.” She says that now but maybe she should go knock on wood before she finds herself regretting her words. “I won’t bite into your contracted pay. I’ll consider it an extension of my volunteer work.” It was possible she wouldn't return from her voyage anyway. [break][break] She was already turning away before he could really issue another warning. “We must hurry before the trail is washed away.” She was already following the tracks, doing her best to see through the slick film of rain that filled them. The broken sticks on the ground helped her know she was on the right path. It seemed he already gauged her a mage, which he wouldn’t be wrong.
The woman, Quistis, introduced herself and explained her situation to the Dalmascan. She was traveling to the port in the Pale Coast, meaning that she was likely one of the adventurers that were called forth to deal with the Fiend responsible for summoning the storm. That alone made him develop some respect for the woman. She was taking on the task that he turned down. “Yes, we must make haste,” he said, following her lead. Quistis seemed to do a much better job at seeing the tracks than Vossler, who struggled to notice the finer details of the footprints through the rain. The possibility of his eyesight failing due to age was not out of the question. This revelation forced Vossler to make a mental note to visit a physician when he returns to Torensten. ”If I may ask,” he said from not too far behind her, “Are you native to these lands?” She did seem like someone who would fit in with the mage university. Yet her mannerisms didn’t seem to quite match that of other citizens in Torensten. In addition, she mentioned being a mercenary, and Vossler had yet to meet anyone native to Zephaniah that was actually capable of having the same skills and abilities as the heroes from other realms. If his suspicions were correct, then she was another one of the lost souls that Vossler has been encountering. And he’s Ben encountering them much more frequently as of late. As he suspected, the tracks went along the shore and led to the seaside cliffs. And as the duo got closer, debris along the trail became more frequent. At first, it was just. Few small pieces of wood. Then it was broken bottles and pieces of clothing. It wasn’t until they reached the bottom of the cliffs that the sight of smashed and abandoned supply boxes came into view. At the Base of the cliffs was the entrance of a small cave. More discarded items laid about, but the rising tide from the storm began to sweep most of them out to sea. Reaching the cave would be difficult as the ground around it was rocky, slippery, and each wave from the sea rushed over them at a nearly ankle deep depth. “You were right,” he stated, trying to see if any Sahagin were lurking nearby. “The current here can be dangerous, and we may lose our footing.” A step forward was taken and already he found it difficult to balance himself. “Stay close, and I can catch you if you fall.”
She heard the clunking of armor and the sloshing of heavier footfalls behind her. Vossler seemed to follow in behind her as they trudged through mud and shells. There was a bit of silence as she concentrated on seeing the depth of the ground in this light and rain. It was broken with his question. “Hm? Oh no. I am not a native. But since I am stuck here, I’ve taken to studying as much as I can about it.” As a mercenary, it was absolutely imperative to know as much as you could about the terrain you covered. Old habits die hard. “Does that bother you?” She asked curiously, unsure if he was someone who did not trust the non-natives. [break][break] They slowly followed along the shore line until the cliffs were standing before them. Her eyes looked into the dark abyss the muddy footprints disappeared into. It seemed the monsters were collecting smashed supplies for their homes. “A monster nesting ground most likely.” She hummed thoughtfully as he warned about the current. "The current is probably the least of our worries.” [break][break] Her boots already felt soaked through and the salty water seemed to drown out any of her taste and smell. She followed in closely next to him. She would offer she would catch him as well, but she was not so sure she could prevent his fall. She snapped her fingers and the wisps of magic floated about her feet before spiraling up to land in the palm of her hand in the form of a small flame. “I’ll light the way.” She stated quietly, lest she attract anymore attention. The rocky shoal was slippery, and she could feel the water sift around her ankles. Hopefully the sound of the waves outside would drown out their coming. [break][break] She pressed herself against a corner and looked around. She could smell that strong fishy stench of Sahagun nearby. But she could not see them in the darkness beyond. “They must have made their territory deep within.” She could already see glints of gold jewlery in the water. “It seemed they left another small trail behind them. Let’s delve deeper, hm?” She was already starting forward, when she trudged a few more yards to a fork in the path. She could hear some sounds to the left. “Perhaps this way?” She began to trudge her way in the direction of the sound.
The pair carried on their conversation, despite the approaching danger from the cave ahead. Neither the slippery rocks nor the possible Sahagin ambush would stop them from learning about the other's situation. "No," he said when Quistis asked if her status on Zephon bothered him. "Like you, my homeland is elsewhere. But I am concerned about the increase in people brought to Zephon as of late." Vossler had yet to find out why. After successfully traversing the rocky exterior of the cavern, the pair made their way inside the damp tunnels. Small amounts of ocean water occasionally swept across the ground behind them while the dark burrow awaited. Quistis proved her how adept she was with magic by using a flame to light the way. "I would have simply let my eyes adjust, but your method is much more effective," Vossler commented. He could honestly express his appreciation for her aid, especially since the illuminated path revealed new details that were previously unseen. "There are gaps in the rocks; likely to be points of ambush." The sound of the ex-knight's sword being pulled from his back echoed down to the depths of the cavern. Vossler paused for a brief moment to listen for any sound of movement ahead. When there was none, he took a step forward. "I'll take the lead, but I beg you to keep the light close." Once Quistis was prepared to move on, Vossler cautiously advanced down the path that his partner had suggested. The moisture on the rocky surfaces shined from the flame's illumination, making it a bit easier for the duo to see the details of other objects. More boxes, smashed bottles, and tattered clothing laid on the path, but the tunnel itself gradually grew larger the further they walked. Vossler's assumption of an ambush proved to be correct when a green shelled creature lunched at him from between a gap in the walls. It was the first time that the Dalmascan had encountered this breed of beast. The Sahagin were almost as tall as a full-sized human, but green like a reptile with a turtle's shell on its back. The creature also wielded a three point spear, which was thrusted towards Vossler. Thankfully, the ex-knight was already in a defensive stance while he was moving through the cavern. The spear came towards his body, but was quickly blocked with his large two-handed sword. With the Sahagin staggered from the deflection, Vossler stepped forward and brought the blade into the shoulder of the creature. It cut into the flesh, but the edge became imbedded into the shell before it could cut too deep. The wound itself causes the beast to flail about in an attempt to break free from the jammed sword. "Get off my blade," Vossler sternly said, kicking the Sahagin away to break his weapon free. The creature stumbled back; injured but not defeated. It's shrieking cries called fourth two more Sahagin from concealed positions further inside the tunnel, showing the mental capabilities that they possessed in order to even lay such a trap. "So much for being covert. Ready yourself!"
This seemed to be a common concern among the people. And though she was interested in learning why, with no real leads the conversation would prove dull. “I am sure that the powers that brought us here will tell us why in due time.” It would be an exercise in their patience. These events were recent. Unless historical references document a time this happened before, the higher powers would only reveal what they feel they should share. “The only whispers they shared with my companion and I were that we were pulled here to fight back the evils of the world. Once we fulfilled our ‘destiny’ they would guide us home.” She shrugged. It seems simple enough. But what would a god consider home for them? Was it back to their homeworld or a place they belonged? [break][break] But as soon as she entered the cave, she would cease talking on the matter. It would not due to make too much noise in enemy territory. This excursion was interesting. Going into dark caves with danger lurking nearby. Treasure scattered everywhere. Maybe she could find something worth bringing back to help give insight into these creatures. Maybe they were not as bestial as they were led to believe. [break][break] Perhaps his eyes were better than her own, but pitch darkness was not something she could see. The deeper they would go into the cave the darker it would be. She kept her flame low and dim. First, to preserve their air in these corridors and also to keep their cover as best as she could. “Happy to be of service.” She smiled back and gave a humble shrug to show it was not too big a deal. [break][break] She nodded at his warnings. There were many keeping an eye to see if there was a shadow a little too long in her dim light. She let him take the lead, if only to give cover to their light source. She was not too worried about being overpowered in an ambush. She was confident in her own abilities. She was careful to step over scattered items that may have leant to more noise being made. [break][break]
The first time she saw the Sahagin, she was a little shocked. She had not seen anything like this before in her world. But the University mentioned them as a common monster found in the region. Still, she didn’t expect them to be this intelligent or fast. Vossler’s anticipation had him ready to respond efficiently to the creature. Quistis called lighting down in a quick bright flash. The first Sahagin dropped, twitching and shaking. Though it had not stopped its cry, it was one less to deal with. She could hear the other’s coming. The smell of burnt fishy meat and ozone filled the air. She pulled the whip of her belt and brandished it at her side. [break][break] “I’m always ready.” She responded confidently. One Sahagin jumped up in the cave at them, and she was quick to try to jump out of its range before it landed it’s spear in the ground. A shockwave shook the cave and loose rocks fell down the walls and overhead. Quistis was quick to let the whip catch it’s ankle and she yanked. The thing fell back on its shell and her whip cracked down on it a second time giving it a good zap with her elemental effect equipped. [break][break] The second one stood over it’s dead friend and thrust its spear at Vossler. Whispers of a spell gleaming about its skin and eyes, ready to cast toad on him.
As expected, Quistis was skilled in magic and struck another one of the sahagins with her a Thunder spell. When a second one assaulted her, the female attacked with her whip and sparked it with an elemental strike. In a manner of seconds, she had already killed two of them. Vossler needed to step up his game. Out of the trio of green beastmen, one still remained. But rather than just attack, the creature had other plans for the Dalmascan. An aura of blue formed at the sagahin's feet as it approached and muttered in an incomprehensible language. Vossler could tell that it was preparing for a spell and thus moved in to attack. Unfortunately, the ex-knight was not quick enough and the spell was completed. A cry rang through the entire cave system when the spell reached it's target. Then, silence. Vossler could still see and felt no pain, but that wasn't to say that he couldn't feel anything. In fact, he did feel something. Something... different. When he tried to move, his limbs felt smaller somehow and more simple, yet he could not maneuver his head well enough to look at his own body. When he tried to speak, only a croak could escape his mouth. And when he tried to turn to see his ally in battle, she appeared so much bigger than him. Everything looked bigger. What--what happened? he thought, still unable to form actual words. The sagahin that they were just fighting approached, towering over the now miniscule Dalmascan, and looked down to him with a hungry expression. Vossler would only now realize that he was turned into another creature, though the intensity of the situation prevented him from figuring out what exactly he was turned into. Hopefully, Quistis could handle the surviving beast and find a way to return him to normal.

She watched as the sahagin shook and trembled their last as electricity coursed through their body. She stood too close to one and felt the electricity ride up her boots for a second. It stunned her briefly as small rubble from the saves ceiling rained upon them. Perhaps, lightning was not the best course of action in a damp cave. She should be more careful. [break][break] Her head shook to get the stars out of her eyes. As she received Vossler seemed to be unable to react to the magic cast by the beast man. Quistis was unable to stop the transformation that happened next. It would not take much for a sahagin to crush a frog. She knit her brows together as she lunged forward to get between frog Vossler and the sahagin. [break][break] As she lunged she pulled her whip folded and taught in her hands. Her weight bowled the creature down onto its back. The creature writhed beneath her as she pushed her whip hard into its throat to effectively silence it. It’s claws bit into her, cutting at both flesh and clothes. She gritted her teeth and with a final jerking push into its throat, she abruptly twisted to crush an elbow into its temple. It’s eyes blanked before it fell unconscious. Quistis stayed close to its chest for a moment, to make sure it stopped moving. [break][break] Her chest heaved as she tried to catch her breath. The struggle took a little bit out of her. “Are you ok?” She asked, turning to curiously look at frogger. Seeing that she got the beastman before it could do further harm, she scooped up Vossler with an encouraging smile. Her palms flat as she picked him up and brought him to her eye level. “Seems you got yourself into a small conundrum. Let’s fix that, shall we?” Who knew how long the effects would be from these beasts. Better to remedy this and be done. [break][break] Magic lit up around her like an unnatural wind. Esuna’s comforting wind swelled its magic, and she leaned forward to give the frog a soft kiss on the head for the transferal of its effects.
