Fratley held Dagger for a time, letting his heartbeat soothe whatever crawling uncertainties vexed the young girl. He could feel how tense she was, like a carving of wood, wound so unbearably tight, her very blood would've been saturated with stress... But steadily, he felt her melt into his arms, allow the Knight's sincere concern for her cleanse her of her doubts... not unlike how it had Freya's all that time ago. He couldn't help but muse that, in the distant future, if he were to have a daughter... would she grow up to be like Dagger? Such a gentle soul with a mind where it counted, enough drive to see her dreams born into reality... but a humility that rendered her more human than soldier. He wondered if a day would ever come where is title would change from "sir knight" to "father"... and what that could mean for Burmecia. Knights and children... it was never easy when both parents were in the military. Either constantly carried into war-camps just outside the range of enemy fire... or left in the hands of another for fear of their own safety. He mused if he were to be a father... would he be the one to lay down his spear first, to sacrifice the only life he'd known... for his child...?
...A ridiculous question... or was it...? To whom does his duty fall...? A broken empire he devoted his life to... or his loved ones...?
Dagger would pull after a time, thanking him for the gesture and questioning what she had ever done to deserve friends like this. After everything that had happened, after battles with evil magic golems, to inter-kingdom wars to the end of the world, Garnet always had her friends at her back to support and care for her and she just couldn't grasp why... For what reason would these noble warriors put their lives on the line for her cause and beyond...?
"It is because you are honorable." Fratley responded to what was possibly a rhetorical question. "From what Freya tells me, from the moment you and your companions have met, you have been nothing but consistent and driven. Your devotion to your friends, your loyalty to your people, your strength in the face of overwhelming opposition inspired the dedication of your friends and drove them to defend you with their lives. The might one can place behind a spear pales in comparison to the power of one's companions, to the fervor they display for you. Dagger, you deserve them because you have earned their loyalty. Do not ever forget that."
Dagger would reflect on the pampered life of Garnet til Alexandros, remarking that despite the immeasurable resources she had at her fingertips, she never quite felt as happy as when she was on the road with her friends, that without them... she might've not been the same woman she was today. Somehow... Fratley doubted that last part. While Dagger didn't flaunt it on the surface, she had a strength within her that pushed her do what she believed was right. Without her friends at her back, she might've not gotten as far... but he didn't believe for a second that she would've caved to her royalist upbringing. She was strong in her own way... with her will rather than with a spear.
"It is no trouble. Doubts should be dealt with at their source when they arise. It is unlikely that there are many of my kind brought to this place... but that does not mean seeking them out will be easy. Simply journeying here as taught me that this world is vast and unknown to us... We will have to be careful."
Together, Dagger and Fratley would drive the conversation back to the present, the warrior straightening his posture as he glanced around at his surroundings, alert.
"Have you gathered any leads regarding your companions? Information regarding their whereabouts?"

Garnet listened to Fratley's faith in her, but she wondered where it had come from. She always wondered. She often lost sleep over it, less so now, but while on their journey, about the danger and the risk she'd dragged people through. So many of them had journeyed by her side because of her, to help her face her demons, to help her learn her powers, so much had happened because of her, even if it wasn't her fault, and every day she questioned herself as to how and why she deserved so many people fighting for her. Even after they knew she wasn't really a princess, even after Alexandria's horrible crimes, they had stood by her. When she had first left Alexandria, she had thought Zidane was treating her like a child, like somebody too innocent for the world, who needed protection. She understood that she was naive, that she was sheltered, but it felt like no matter what she did to prove herself, he thought she had no idea what she was doing and would never take her seriously.
But she had been wrong. That hadn't been it at all. People cared for her. They looked out for her, where ever she went. Often it felt like she was getting special treatment, sometimes she thought it was because they thought she was weak, and she couldn't fight for herself; Freya wouldn't need protection or support like she did, but as time went on, she liked to think it was something more than that. It was friendship. She still wasn't sure what she had done to earn such enduring friendship, but there wasn't a day that went past in which she didn't treasure it.
"Thank you. Your words are... too kind," Garnet smiled lightly, with a slight bow.
Fortunately, at least to stop Garnet feeling so awkward, Fratley moved onto business, asking what she knew. She paused for just a moment, frowning a little as she thought how to piece it all together. "I know some things. Mikoto is here, but she said that she cannot sense Zidane in this city. However, she seems to have allied herself with Kuja, so I do not know if she was speaking truthfully. I met Amarant, but he said he had encountered both myself and Zidane at a beach, and yet, I had no memory of that event, and we could not locate him there either. Eiko is also here, but she had no news," Garnet outlined. The memory loss was perhaps the most alarming thing to her. It suggested that an entire world could have passed and they wouldn't know about it. She wished she understood what it all meant, but she couldn't even begin to speculate...
"...Then our position is dire..." Fratley would muse quietly, cupping his chin between his finger and thumb. A handful of these names were only vaguely familiar to him, those being the name of the bandit-king and the regent's adoptive daughter. From the way Dagger described it, her companions seemed to be scattered to the four winds across this new world and none of them willing to aide them... at least, not yet. What's more, Mikoto, Zidane's family, has joined forces with the worst butcher Gaia had ever known, likely giving him even more power to do as his twisted heart desires upon these innocent people! Finally, the hero of Gaia, he who made their salvation a reality, had not yet been spotted, leaving them without their most reliable and experienced warrior to aid them. Indeed, a field report such as this would have made any general blue with outrage and frustration upon realizing how little they would have to work with, how few strategies they would have to even try and approach this problem.
"If Mikoto has already allied herself with Kuja, then I am afraid we must consider her an enemy. We are already severely limited in our options and cannot afford to risk what little we have in trying to sway her away from him... Not yet, at least." Fratley's voice dipped as he relayed his opinion to the Alexandrian Queen, his voice dipping into a grave dip into the dark. He was not happy with what they would have to do, that a child would be one of the first to stand between them and Kuja.
...But then, she wasn't just a child, was she...?
"It is likely Kuja is attempting to rebuild his capital and influence among these folk as well... but it could be possible that he is just as lost as we are in this new, strange world. What would you suggest we do, Dagger?"
Fratley would break from his musings, turning to she who had ultimate authority in this manner. While Fratley lost his people, his society and his culture to Kuja, the same could nearly be said for Garnet if the stories of what happened to Alexandria were to be believed. While she didn't lose everything, she witnessed the loss of her family and the destruction of her kin firsthand. She was also a Queen, as Fratley hadn't forgotten, as well as the one among them with the most intimate knowledge of the twisted, silver Genome. In most respects, Dagger should have the most authority in these matters.

"Not much change there, then." The quip response to Fratley stating their situation was dire came as much of a surprise to Garnet as it would to anybody listening. It was not something Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII would have ever said a few years ago. But it was, it seemed, something Dagger would say, and Garnet blamed Zidane's influence. While it was true that they were lacking in both manpower and information, Garnet did feel that this situation was pretty usual for them. Kuja had always been one step ahead of them back on Gaia. She wasn't sure why she was shocked that he still was now.
"Mitiko is misguided, but we cannot allow her to come to harm. She is Zidane's sister, and Kuja is manipulating her, as he does everyone. She is naive, and Kuja has tricked people who are much more experienced in the past. We can't judge her too harshly," Garnet said, even though she knew Fratley's words made sense. She had to consider Mitiko an ally because that's what Zidane would want. She wouldn't allow herself to make a judgement on his sister until he arrived. It just wasn't her place to do so... queen or not.
He asked for her suggestions, and she hesitated. Her ideas always seemed to go wrong, didn't they? Fleeing Alexandria, returning to Alexandria, whatever she tried to do, when it was her idea, it felt like a disaster. She wished Steiner and Beatrix were there. She could say her ideas but bounce it off them for advice. They were the military strategists. She was just the royal...
"We should be... very careful engaging Kuja. When we battled him on Terra, he used our aggression against him to reach a Trance state, and that gave him enough power to destroy the entire planet," Garnet outlined, thinking carefully. "Moreover, we can't be sure of his intentions here. On Gaia, his only intention was to use... my power... to escape Garland's influence. And then, after Terra's destruction, he was driven by the fear of his own death. Now that Terra is gone and he is still alive, I do not know what his goal is. I am quite certain that whatever he's planning, it won't be good, but I don't know what his goal now is. Even if he's been sent here as you guess, like us, against his will, you can be certain that he will be after power and influence, but until we know more, confronting him head on might be particularly dangerous..." Garnet speculated, hoping that she sounded more like a strategist than she felt.
"Misguided or not, she is on his side, correct...? And if I remember correctly, I believe he and she are kin so separating them will not be as easy as it would those normally under his sway. I understand your concern for her, your majest-.... Dagger, but we mustn't lose sight of how precarious our position is. To attempt and pull her from his grasp sooner rather than later would take manpower we can't afford to lose. We mustn't forget that." Garnet would remark how dangerous it would be to face Kuja directly as, at his maximum power, he held enough energy to blow planets to bits! Indeed... that was just about out of anyone's reach, he imagined, short of getting all eight heroes back in one place again. But even so... if what Freya told him were true, all they were capable of doing was biding their time until he decided to try and end it all. It was not the combined power of the defenders of Gaia, but the arrogance of Kuja that finally undid him... That twisted genome... he was not a stupid man. It was more than likely that he was planning something else, something deeper under ground than before. Fratley had a damn-good feeling that whatever he was planning, it wasn't for the benefit of anyone other than himself... and selfishness necessitated the taking from others.
The Dragon Knight stared incredulously as Garnet drew very close to speaking on Kuja's behalf, remarking how they couldn't exactly be sure WHAT his intentions were given the warp in his personality after discovering his own mortality. In truth, Fratley was left speechless as she, Garnet, who lost nearly everything, would attempt to provide some kind of neutrality to the face of the man who actually DID lose everything! From his people to his country and possibly even his MEMORY, Fratley had lost it all... and Kuja was to blame. A dragon will always be a dragon no matter how utterly pitiful it appeared to be when cradling its dead. A monster is is no less a monster because it claims the characteristics of a person. One could almost see the spite, the anger boiling in the blood of the warrior of Fratley, burning around him like an invisible aura of pressure.
"There is no need to try and humanize him for the sake of making a point." Fratley remarked coldly, glancing off down the road. "Whatever his plans are, they must cease. Blood will be paid in kind fore there is no other currency that will fit what he owes the people of Burmecia." Garnet would attempt to push for caution, stating that going after him directly would likely just endanger them all... and that part was true enough. Kuja alone was powerful enough to control beasts that could obliterate civilizations and with the legendary power of Trance in his arsenal...
Fratley's grip on his spear TIGHTENED. He felt so weak... Insignificant. Unfit for the task of claiming retribution. He had been told that there was a time where his spear was among the mightiest in the world, that his name was known throughout the kingdoms... but look at him now, reduced to a... a side-show attraction! A knight with nobody to protect, no king to serve, was left only with the mission of claiming justice to ease their spirits... And Fratley couldn't even do that!
"...We must seek allies." He concluded after a long, tense pause of silence. "This world appears to be teeming with sellswords and warriors of note. No doubt we can gather an effective force quickly. Your friends might be among them Dagger. We should not waste time."

Garnet couldn't say she was surprised by Fratley's resistance to the idea of trying to save Mikoto. There was a time Garnet would have been the same way. She remembered trying to question Zidane and understand why he was being so nice to Eiko when they first met, why he went out of his way to help everybody he met, when they were on such an important journey. Of course, Eiko had turned out to be an indispensable ally, and one without whom they might have never stopped Kuja. "You may be correct," Garnet confessed. "But Mikoto is capable of good also, I've seen it. And while she is Kuja's sibling... she is also Zidane's. If that is not motive enough, then consider; Kuja was capable of entirely destroying Terra, Zidane was designed to be what Garland named an 'angel of death', destined to destroy Gaia; Mikoto is a more advanced life form than either of them. I believe that she is considerably more valuable as an ally than an enemy, and we shall have to act quickly before Kuja sways her completely," Garnet countered. It was a worrying thought, but she had seen both what Kuja and Zidane were capable of, so what could Mikoto do once she had been trained in the ways of magic, or war? They didn't need another Kuja level adversary after all.
Garnet almost recoiled when Fratley accused her of humanising Kuja, however, and looked slightly aghast that he would think that of her. She shook her head vigorously for a moment, long hair swaying around her. "You misunderstand me, Sir Fratley, I do not seek to humanise Kuja. Only to be able to predict his next move. Understanding his motives will allow us to speculate on what he intends to do on this world. But do not think for a moment I have forgotten what he did to our people, what he turned my kingdom into, what he did to me personally... Do you know how many lives he took using my Eidolons? Do you know how often I lay awake at night, wondering if that blood is on my hands too? If I could have done something, anything, to prevent him taking them? Do you know how often I see Atmos destroying Lindblum or Bahamut reigning fire on Alexandria in my nightmares? I have not, and never shall, forget what he has done. But Kuja never acted at random; he always had a goal in mind. Spiteful, evil goals, yes, but a goal. We must ascertain what his goal here is. And then we will stop him and bring him to justice. You have my word," Garnet swore with a formal bow.
His suggestion to cultivate allies was a good one, but Garnet was slightly unsure of the best road to do so. "My funds are not sufficient to hire many mercenaries here, and I doubt yours are either. We would be better appealing to people's better nature. There must be an authority here, a King or Duke or Regeant, that we can approach. If we can explain the threat Kuja poses, the kingdom's own security force may be able to detain him before he grows too powerful. It would also deprive him of a support network; Kuja sank his claws into Alexandria's leadership, who's to say he won't do the same here? We're better getting there first. A knight and Queen should garner enough respect to be listened to here," she proposed. It wasn't a foolproof plan. In fact, it was barely a plan at all, but it was the best she could come up with, and she was willing to give it a try.
Fratley understood that Queen Garnet was new to her position as ruler and that negotiation, while likely trained, was not something she had to practice often while off on her adventures... So the knight could forgive her for the poor arguing points she was bringing up in favor of her position. Never once did she actually address the key detail of "yet" when it came to retrieving Makoto. She seemed to take a "not yet" as a "no" right away, beating the Burmecian over the head with all the reasons why he should risk himself for the blood-relative of Gaia's biggest butcher. She first started with moral reasons and, when that got little more than a cold, contemplative stare, the Queen would quickly shift to a more practical reason, that her power, if honed properly, could rival Kuja's by itself and that it would be best to have her on their side as soon as possible!
...Very well.
Perhaps feeling the unease in the air, the Queen would then quickly apologize for her previous phrasing regarding Kuja, that she only meant to emphasize that they understand his psychology predict and intercept his plans before they come to fruition! Not at all did she try to breath some humanity into the soulless monster that was the silver-monkey-beast, one that laughed as he brought forth the death of thousands and at a distance! Anger... ebbed out of Fratley like infected blood from a freshly open wound, the knight's body language sagging slightly as the warrior leaned against his spear. His eyes... seemed to grow heavy, drawn towards the well-paved cobblestone beneath their feet rather than the concerned, yet driven features of Garnet til Alexandros. Each beat of the knight's heart sent a weakening pain throughout his nerves, each breath slightly labored as if holding something back. There was a weight upon both his shoulders and crushing down upon him from within, a harsh gripping crush upon his heart as if forcing his blood to pump for him...
"We have no choice." Fratley agreed as Garnet restated her dedication to stopping Kuja. "There is too much at stake."
Garnet would remark that there simply wasn't enough money in their coffers to accommodate an army of soldiers, that it would be better to simply try and appeal to their better nature! Fratley did his very best to keep his eyebrow from raising at such a remark, that Garnet believed that offering soldiers-for-heir nothing but glory, pride and the like would gain them the forces they would need. Knights would most certainly offer themselves at such a beckoning... But one look at this town suggested that there wasn't much hope... At least, not here.
"Then we have a plan." Fratley concluded, nodding his head. "You must appeal to the lords of this world while I gather soldiers. Perhaps we will return with enough support to confront him. Dagger, if there is nothing else... I must go. I wish you a safe journey."
...And with that, Fratley would make his way into the city... disappearing among the surrounding crowds!
