-- Blinded by the glare I was moving like I didn't care But it was more than I could bear --
A living city.
It was not a small Black Mage Village with meandering inhabitants set within a quiet maze-like forest. Not the frozen in time and ancient Bran Bal with its doll-like denizens. Nor was it a crowded airship with soldiers running about urgently. Though the latter was the closest she had to experience to this.
The town of Torensten bustled with life and people. The architecture was primitive, but sturdy. The white stone made everything seem so much brighter as it reflected the sun. The glaring buildings towered up higher and higher until one seemed to get dizzy looking up at it. Which left one vulnerable to be toppled by the herds of humans that gathered and moved in masses. Their noise was disorienting as it reverberated off walls and echoed down the streets in peals of laughter and conversations. The bright colored banners and decoration called to your eyes. They demanded to be looked upon, as merchants tried to attract you by overwhelming the senses.
Mikoto was disoriented.
She clutched the coin purse parted to her by Kuja. She simply stood in the gateway, hesitant to even enter the city. The Headstone Forest felt much more welcoming than this. Quieter. The spirits could be tended to until she found a way to properly put them to rest or bring them to life. Their one malicious act was only of desperation, she was sure.
Souls and spirits were much more a familiar sight than what was before her now.
Did Kuja and Zidane really handle this on overload? Then, she should be able to do this on her own too. Her eyes seemed to swirl for a moment, before she shook her head. She was made to assimilate and conquer. Letting something like this deter her seemed a waste of her creation.
Her first step was the hardest.
Then, came the second step.
And when nothing happened, her confidence seemed to grow. She felt every crack and uneven cobblestone beneath her boots. The people who built this place did not seem to understand the use of a level. If she kept to one side of the pavement, there was less chance of being over ran. There was flow to human traffic. And a smell. The musk was quite clear to her in this weather. It mingled with the leather of adventurers and the odd, cleaner scents of the what seemed to be the more privileged.
Cautiously, she moved through an open square where there was a beautiful fountain of a marble woman pouring water from a vase. A place where people seemed to stand around and speak to each other. The smell of food wafted nearby as street vendors offered a quick bite.
But, Mikoto had a task to do. It required places of exchange. Where they had wares she wanted and she parted gil to them. She forgot to ask Kuja if the exchange rate was similar to Gaia. But, if Mikoto was good at anything, it was following an order. She was unsure, really, how to handle the request or her money. Part of it was to be spent on her. But, she was still learning how to think about herself and not the survival of the other genomes. She found the transition difficult and wanted for nothing. Not something money could buy anyway. Bran Bal had no such exchanges, so such selfish wants seemed beyond her reach.
She trekked anyway. She would find something to buy, even if it was a place to stay for the night. Or using it to find what this town had to offer.
Unfortunately, her bizarre manner made her stand out. Her tail hung low with her own uncertainty. She seemed to edge around corners as if unsure if there was something unexpected around the corner. Her face held little emotion with her eyes half open, as if walking in some odd daze. And her eyes seemed to bore into people as if seeing something beyond their personas.
The first store she came upon seemed to have the latest fashions in the window. She stood there, hands down at her side as she stared past the glass. It displayed expensive dresses of smooth silk material. Some even lined in fluffy feathers around the neck and down the side. Is this what the fashion was here? Her gaze seemed to bore holes into it, trying to find what utility this outfit had.
Ah, Torensten! Jessie loved the city she’d come to call home. She loved the bustle of life that flowed endlessly through the twisting cobblestone streets. She loved the people and their passion, their eagerness. It was a city of dreams and wonder. She still might not know where she came from, but it didn’t matter. Torensten was home in all the ways that mattered right now.
She was dressed simply, in a light, loose tunic and leggings to combat the heat of the day. Her hair was drawn back into a ponytail with her signature red headband. Jessie grinned as she made her way through the square. Here and there she recognized people she’d come to know. The bartender at her favorite tavern, a fellow actor, some regular patrons. She waved and called out greeting after greeting and felt energized.
Today was her off day. There were no rehearsals or shows today. Jessie had the entire day to herself to do whatever she wanted. And of course, she found herself drawn to the market square. Specifically, to the best dress shop in all of Torensten. She was constantly looking for new outfits to use in her troupe’s performances and the dress shop was the very best place to find interesting and unique pieces. Her pouch of gil jingled merrily against her hip as she made her way past the bustle of the city to her destination.
She was close to the dress shop when she noticed a strange girl standing outside the window, staring into the fabrics and designs on display. Jessie stopped for a moment and looked at the window shopper. From a distance, she couldn’t quite tell how old the girl was. She looked young, but looks could always be deceiving. She was otherwise unassuming, with blonde hair and a thin frame. Except, of course, the fact that she had a tail. Jessie was mesmerized by the long blonde-furred appendage twitching against the cobblestones. It reminded her distinctly of a cat in distress, when the little feline had no idea what to do and was becoming overwhelmed. Did tail language carry over to humanoid species? Jessie had never had the opportunity to learn. In fact, despite all the strange denizens of Torensten, she couldn’t really remember another tailed person before.
Jessie drew closer and saw that the girl’s bright eyes were staring unblinkingly into the window. It almost seemed like she was trying to light the fabric on fire through the intensity of her gaze. A little odd, sure, but Jessie felt sorry for her. She seemed entirely out of her element here in the bustling Torensten square. Hoping the girl wouldn’t flee, Jessie moved to stand beside her at the window.
A new dress, a confection of feathers and silk, was the primary focal point of the display. It was utterly gorgeous and utterly overpriced, being new and fashionable and all. Jessie probably had the gil to afford it, but was it worth it? She looked over at the blonde girl and gave her a big smile. “What are you looking for? I can help you find it,” she gave her a friendly wink. “My name is Jessie and I know this city super well, so I can show you anything!” Then she gestured at the dress shop, “And if you want to go in there and look around you can. The owner is a nice old man, he’d be certain to help you find something pretty if that’s what you want. Not everything is as expensive as the window display.” Jessie sighed wistfully and looked at the feathered dress. “Though maybe he’d offer me a discount on that dress.”

The beautiful dress was not what she came here for, even if it left her in a state of musing over its utility. The fabric looked soft though and she could not help but be lured in by the textures. Was it as soft as a moogle as it looked? She heard someone draw near at a casual pace and Mikoto simply assumed the person wanted to also look at the objects in the window. She regarded Jessie’s reflection in the window. The female was pretty with a bright light in her eyes. Her clothes were simple, but looked easy to move in. The bandana seemed to help keep her hair out of her eyes, but its bright color seemed to lead eyes to look up at her. [break][break]
Mikoto was about to turn and walk away when the person spoke to her. Quietly, she turned fully to face this now named person. Jessie. Her manner reminded of Zidane. Open and friendly with everyone he comes across. What did this wink mean? Should she return it? At this point, she did know now to at least exchange her name. “Mikoto.” She said simply. “I am looking for a tail ribbon. I was told mine was basic and I could find better in the city.” Blunt and to the point. Even her voice was soft and even, though her intent was innocent enough. [break][break]
Jessie’s gesture back toward the store caused her eyes to look inside as the door opened. A soft bell chimed as the customer walked through. “I can try on items…” She looked down at her clothes. If she changed her clothes to look less Terran, would Kuja regard her as less painful to look at? Would she remind him less about the past that bothered him? It was a possible step she may need if she was to get him to teach her. But she saw the racks of clothes and took a step back away from the door and Jessie. It seemed a daunting task. “I don’t know where to start…” Her eyes looked back up at Jessie, and she shook her head uncertainly. “Will you take me to the old man?” It was better that she have someone introduce her so not to bother other humans unnecessarily. [break][break]
“What about the dress do you like?” Mikoto asked curiously. Maybe she could understand the purpose of different clothing here. Did the culture of Zephon have different purposes for different clothes? The idea made sense to her.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]
The girl seemed to be passively watching her as Jessie introduced herself. Her eyes were large and watchful, following the movements of Jessie’s expressions closely. When she introduced herself, her voice was even, nearly without inflection or feeling at all. Tail ribbon? Jessie’s eyes immediately darted back to the girl’s long tail drooping on the ground. She did indeed have a rather plain pink band tied there. It was basic, but who cared? Jessie’s bandana was the same level of basic. [break][break]
“Well, I’m sure there are many types of ribbons in the shop. But I think yours is pretty anyway! No harm in seeing what’s in stock.” She didn’t add that the ribbons would be hair ribbons but she figured Mikoto wouldn’t care too much as long as it served its purpose. “I don’t know where to start…” the girl murmured and Jessie could tell she was overwhelmed at the very idea of shopping. There were just so many items on view. It definitely could be intimidating to someone unfamiliar with the shop! “I’ll help you!” She gave Mikoto a grin. “And I’ll take you to the shopkeeper. Best not call him old man to his face though. He might think it’s rude.” She stopped to think, cocking her head to one side. “I think his name is Mr. Seras. I’m not positive though. Hmm. That might be the name of the shoe salesman across town. Well. Regardless, I’ll introduce you!” [break][break] She started towards the door but Mikoto still seemed stuck on the feathered dress in the window. Jessie returned to stand beside her and look at the beautiful creation again. “What about the dress do you like?” The girl sounded curious, almost as though she couldn’t understand the concept of fashion. [break][break] “Welllll,” Jessie stalled and looked it over. “I’m an actress. I like dresses like this for some of my roles. I don’t think I’d wear this one as, like, a daily outfit or anything. But I think it’s so pretty. I love the feathered accents, the color, everything! I think it would be great in a play, maybe as a ball gown. Or the dress of a fairy queen.” She gestured to her simple outfit. “I wear stuff like this when I’m not acting, usually. Dresses like that are great, but not exactly practical, you know?” She was rambling. The girl probably didn’t care that much, but Jessie couldn’t stop herself sometimes. [break][break] “Anyway!” She returned to the door and held it open for Mikoto. “Let’s go talk to Mr. Seras! And look at those ribbons.” She marched inside the well-stocked shop. Racks dotted the floor, laden with hanging garments. The walls were covered in bins and baskets of smaller items and folded displays. There was a whole corner devoted to accessories like ribbons, headbands, and necklaces. They’d have to look over there! But first, Jessie waved enthusiastically to the elderly man straightening up a display. [break][break] “Mr. Seras, right?” she asked, unafraid to get the name wrong. He’d certainly correct her. But the man just straightened and nodded. “What can I do for you ladies?” His voice was rough and harsh, but his eyes were kind and he gave them a small smile. “This is Mikoto,” she gestured to the pink-and-white clad girl beside her. “We were hoping you could show her around the store a bit. Maybe show us some items that would fit her? Any recommendations? Also, we need to look at ribbons.” [break][break] Mr. Seras set down the trousers he had been folding. He peered at Mikoto, eyes seeming to catch on her tail. “What type of clothes are you looking for? Formal or casual? Or traveling? Light, travel-friendly clothing seems to be all the rage right now.”

Its already too confusing. Help. @jessie
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class,bulk] Listening intently, Mikoto would be caught off-guard with the compliment of her tail ribbon. She felt her cheeks heat for a moment. She had assumed her older genome counterpart’s opinion was absolute. Regardless of the bearings of this resident’s words, she had to appease Kuja if she hoped for him to continue to teach her. She gave Jessie a nod to accept her aid in looking for something new to wear. [break][break] She didn’t understand why the term old man was used. It was a common description used for Garland. He had not seemed to mind. She made a mental note that the people of this world were sensitive to certain descriptions, adding this ‘old man’ to the list. It seemed a common trend to prefer to use someone’s name here as it was on Gaia. Mister Seras. [break][break] So this is something an actress wore. Her eyes looked up at it. Did Zidane and his troupe also choose these types of outfits? Zidane and Vivi tried to explain this theatre stuff to her before. Though it was hard for her to imagine an actual performance without seeing one. Eyes turned back to Jessie to see an example of normal wear. It was much more simple and seemed to have more functionality in movement. Mikoto politely nodded her understanding, “So this dress has limited functionality based on a role you are serving. Your current wear is more diverse in utility.” Her previous theory was correct. Each outfit type serves a different purpose. She would need to be clear in her intent on what she preferred to this Mister Seras. [break][break] She quietly followed Jessie inside the door. Her eyes lingered on the many options that were here and there seemed to be plenty of other people riffling through some of the wares. It suddenly felt very cramped compared to outside. Some people were shoulder to shoulder at a rack. Others knelt to ruffle through the bins. In a way, it reminded her of the curious soulless genomes. Mindless observations of new things. Jessie closed the door behind them and the chime of the bell seemed to signal the store keeper to turn their attention on them. Mikoto clasped her hands down to her sides and moved a little more stiffly. She already felt overwhelmed by the city. No having two people dedicate their attention to her felt strange. [break][break] The girl lagged behind Jessie, who was more than eager to get the shopping started. Mikoto was trying to take in all the options, but it seemed more numerous to count. Torensten seemed to have a lot of useless stuff, but it also had plenty of resources too. Her attention was turned back to Mr. Seras as he addressed them. Mikoto felt no need to speak as Jessie did introductions and statements of purpose for her. [break][break] It seemed Mikoto had to pick some options. She looked up to Jessie for maybe some additional help, but then turned back to Mr. Seras. Formal was most likely the dress in the window. She did not want that. “One casual…and one travel?” She seemed to be thinking about what she wanted. Kuja never specified how much to buy. “Something easy to move in...Similar to what I am wearing, but...different.” She was struggling. Why had Kuja expected her to be able to do this? “And some non-basic tail ribbons.” [break][break] Mr. Seras looked her over. Mikoto’s fashions were certainly...different. He had yet to see travelers in the designs she was wearing. Accommodations would need to be had for her tail. He placed a hand on Mikoto’s shoulder to gently guide her to the part of the boutique with dresses. “How about we start with casual.” He eyed her a little, trying to gauge her size before picking out a few that were light and simple. [break][break] One was a white sundress with gentle ruffles in the dress. It had pink flowers and butterfly embellishments sewn onto the skirt of the dress. Another was a knee length pink dress with a ruched top and flowing skirt. Then another was a very simple white dress with a pink ribbon at its waist. All of these dresses were very casual. Mikoto observed each one and looked between him and Jessie. “How do I decide?” It felt like a foolish question to her. If he gave her one option, she would have simply taken it. Instead, her teal eyes burned into him. [break][break] Mr. Seras seemed surprised that a customer just...had no idea how to shop. The girl looked fifteen-sixteenish, but it was clear she had never done something like this before. He took a little sympathy. What kind of life did she live that no one took her shopping for clothes? He provided a polite smile, “You try them on and decide what you like best.” Mikoto stared at him for a moment before making a move as if she was going to start trying them on in the middle of the store. [break][break] “Err.” He quickly stopped her, by pushing the dresses into Mikoto’s arms. He pressed a hand on her shoulder to get her to look up to his gesturing towards the dressing rooms. “There are rooms equipped with mirrors so you can better see for yourself.” As Mikoto turned to look in the direction he painted, Mr. Seras turned to Jessie for some help. “Erm. Did you have something you had in mind to try on? Maybe you can help shop her the dressing room?”
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Mikoto had a very abrupt and calm way of speaking. She was polite and attentive to everything Jessie was saying and seemed to cling to her every word and action. It honestly was starting to make her feel a little overwhelmed! She wasn’t used to being a role model for someone else. But she hoped she could help the lost and confused girl out, at least a bit. And shopping had to be an easy place to start, all things considered. She seemed very uncomfortable and lost in the city still and Jessie wondered where she lived before coming to Torensten. Perhaps she lived in a little village or town somewhere further away? [break][break]
“Yeah, I suppose that’s a good way to put it,” she agreed when Mikoto assessed her simple tunic and leggings and its diversity. The elaborate dresses were certainly not useful for everyday wear. She loved feeling beautiful and extravagant sometimes, but the utility of a more simple outfit couldn’t be denied. [break][break]
Jessie noticed Mikoto begin to move stiffly and seem even more uncomfortable once they were inside the store. It was pretty cramped in here. There wasn’t a ton of space to move around, and for someone so clearly unused to crowds it had to be a lot! Jessie hoped it hadn’t been a mistake to bring her in here. But a glance behind her shoulder told her that Mikoto at least seemed interested in looking over the offerings in the little shop. Overwhelmed certainly, but intrigued. [break][break]
Jessie waited patiently as Mr. Seras and Mikoto spoke about her preferences. She could tell the girl was still struggling a bit and tried to give her an encouraging smile. Luckily, the shopkeeper was a very kind man who seemed quite willing to work with the confused girl. Others might be less hospitable to someone like her. The man placed a gentle hand on her shoulder and led her away. Jessie followed, feeling like a hovering aunt or something. She couldn’t very well leave Mikoto now though, she had to see this little mission through. And then make sure she had somewhere safe to stay in town. She certainly couldn’t let her wander alone, not without being sure she’d be okay. [break][break]
Mr. Seras seemed to decide that Mikoto really liked pink. And, well. That did seem likely. The girl was clothed head to toe in the color, but it was kind of amusing that he didn’t offer any other color choices! “How do I decide?” Mikoto asked, looking between the three simple dress choices the clothier had produced. Mr. Seras gently suggested trying them on and seeing which she preferred. Jessie wasn’t surprised that Mikoto didn’t seem to know about that practice of shopping. What did surprised her was when the girl seemed ready to strip in the middle of the store! [break][break]
Jessie was thankful that Mr. Seras stopped that particular break of etiquette by shoving the dresses into her hands. Jessie had been too slow to react, to think of some way to stop Mikoto without embarrassing her or causing a scene! “Can I try the feathered dress in the window?” Jessie turned her attention to Mr. Seras when he asked if there was anything she wanted to try. He was clearly pained and at the limit of helping a clueless teenage girl. This was where Jessie clearly came in again. If she was willing to strip in the store, she didn’t think she’d be too shy to share a dressing room. And Jessie was far too used to scene and outfit changes with her troupe to care even a little bit. [break][break]
The shopkeeper gave her a grateful look and nodded, clearly pleased to have another task. He scurried away to the back to find one of the beautiful, feathered dresses in her size. “Trying stuff on isn’t bad,” she told Mikoto as she waited for the dress. “Like he said, there are a lot of mirrors so you can really see everything properly. We can share one, if that’s okay with you? I can help if you need it.” She grinned, hoping her enthusiasm and confidence might rub off on Mikoto just a little. “And I might need your help getting into that crazy dress, now that I think about it!” Mr. Seras returned then, carrying the elaborate dark blue dress. He passed it to her and led the two of them to the dressing rooms. “Let me know if you need anything else,” he said and gave Jessie another grateful look. “Alright, let’s try on some dresses!” Jessie pulled back the thick curtain and gestured for Mikoto to step inside.

[attr="class","jrinfo"]Jessie to the rescue! / @blacksuit4
Mikoto glanced up and noticed Jessie giving her that confident, reassuring smile. She felt heat in her cheeks as she looked away again. Zidane gave a similar smile, though he always went a step farther with a silly comment she didn’t quite understand. Jessie seemed a little less silly, and it made her feel a little more comfortable. She was unsure why Jessie was helping her, but she would not turn away a chance to learn. Apparently, there were lots of nuances to clothes shopping. If this had been meant for a specific task, she simply would have pieced together clothing that would have helped for that task.
[break][break] But, this self-expression thing was turning out to be quite a monumental task. And it seemed she was already not blending in by breaching some unspoken rule. She took the clothes handed to her by Mr. Seras and felt the material was much softer than what she was used to, “Soft”. She looked down at it with a renewed interest in her eyes. The black mages had thicker, coarser robes. Even her own clothes, while comfortable, did not have the lightness of these.
[break][break] Jessie drew attention back to her, “That is adequate.” She agreed softly to sharing a dressing space, knowing that at this point it may be better to follow Jessie’s lead in this endeavor. For some reason, confidence was spreading to her a little. She felt her chest swell and she gave a stiff nod of approval. “I can help.” Mikoto could at least help with that task. She padded into the dressing area behind the shopkeeper and Jessie. She gave another nod to Jessie, maybe a little less stiffly, about trying on dresses. She moved into the room Jessie held the curtain for. “Your world is full of these ‘shop’ places.” Mikoto said lightly, noticing that the instrument in the clothing could hook onto the wall loop. She did so as she studied the dresses. “Every desire can be fulfilled for a reasonable fee, as if it were nothing.” She murmured, absentminded looking at herself in the mirror.
[break][break] How were these humans not overwhelmed by the sheer number of useless options they have given themselves? It seemed puzzling to her. Terra had none of these distractions. The Black Mages had a very limited selection of magical trinkets and enhanced clothing for those needing protection. There were no massive shopping places such as the scale of Torensten.
[break][break] Yet she turned to touch the fabric of the dress again. She waited for Jessie to enter and close the curtain behind her. This must be the appropriate place to try on clothes. She leaned against the wall to remove her first boot with tugs as it seemed to stick snuggly to her skin. “That dress is for your actress role? Actress is the same as a thespian?” The boot gave and she worked on the other one. “A peer of mine is one...” Mikoto doubted that Zidane was here. She could feel Kuja’s resonance clearly, but not any other. Still...it was worth investigating. “Have you seen him? His appearance bears a likeness to mine.” She looked up to her as she placed her other boot beside the table. “I can help with your dress first.”
[break][break] She was still uncertain of this decision making process. Maybe watching Jessie would help her understand.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Jessie knew Mikoto was still a bit uncomfortable with this whole process. She felt bad that the girl had apparently never been shopping before! What had her life been like where shopping was a foreign concept? At least she did seem pleased to be given the task of helping Jessie into the feathered dress. Maybe she’d feel more at ease if she wasn’t the only one needing assistance at the shop. Perhaps she’d feel less awkward and confused if she saw that Jessie also needed help, despite living in a world where shopping was much more commonplace! [break][break] The two slipped into a large dressing room stall, leaving Mr. Seras to tend to the rest of his customers. Jessie started at the girl’s comment about her world being full of shops. She supposed Torensten was her world now, regardless of wherever she may have come from originally. And Torensten was certainly full of shops of all varieties. “Yes. I’ve heard that there are even more shops with different things in Sonora and Provo,” she said, a little wistfully. “But I’ve never been to either of those cities. I can only really remember Torensten.” She stood beside Mikoto and clutched the feathered dress to her chest. Her reflected expression looked a little sad to her eyes. Amnesia could do that to a person, she supposed. But she tried to cover her sadness with another smile as Mikoto spoke again, asking about her dress and her life as an actress. “Yes, an actress is a thespian. I’m glad you’re familiar with theatre!” Jessie had to admit she was surprised the girl knew what a thespian was, but was unfamiliar with the concept of trying on clothing. “I don’t think I’ve seen a boy who looked like you,” she said after considering. No, Mikoto was definitely unique in her memory. She really didn’t know many actors beyond her own acting troupe anyway. [break][break] “Sure,” Jessie agreed when Mikoto offered to help her first. She shimmied out of her tunic and leggings before throwing them in an unceremonious heap on the table beside Mikoto’s precisely placed boots. Her own boots were thrown into a corner. Then she took the feathered dress off of its hanger. The back laced up like a corset and there was no way Jessie would be able to tie and tighten it herself. She slipped into the dress, already loving the feeling of the soft silk against her skin. It pulled up easily. The sleeves were long and flared at the hands. The neckline was plunging and lined with feathers and lace. The torso was ribbed and corseted, with the ties loose and open in the back. It was absolutely gorgeous. And Jessie thought it would fit perfectly once it was tied. “Okay,” she said and turned around, so the open back was facing Mikoto. “I just need you to tie the back. Just alternate the strings through these little loops.” Jessie reached behind her back and tried to point at one of the partially hidden loop of cloth. “It’s kind of just like shoe laces,” she explained, hoping Mikoto would have experience lacing up shoes at least. “It doesn’t have to be perfect yet, just so long as it’s tight enough to stay up.”

[attr=class,bulk] Sonora and Provo? Kuja had mentioned there were multiple cities, but this was the first time hearing the names. Then, Mikoto observed that Jessie looked a little sad at the mention of only remembering Torensten. Was it a bad memory? Mikoto felt there might be something more there, but the girl smiled soon after. For some reason, it still felt a little sad. [break][break] Mikoto was not disappointed that Jessie had not seen Zidane. She mostly expected that response. Still, she wondered if he was around somewhere. His pink creature seemed adamant that Zidane was here. “I’m not…” She shook her head softly. “I was told about theatres from him and his peers. I have never seen one.” Mikoto clarified. Maybe one day she would. Her curiosity was piqued after all. She didn’t leave the Black Mage Village often. It worried her too much to leave the genomes alone. But Vivi had stories to tell. She believed it was safe to assume that if Jessie had never left Torensten and she was a thespian, than they had a theatre here. "Where can I find one here?" She shifted to give Jessie some room to step into her dress. The fabric looked soft, but the feather’s on the dress seemed particularly fluffy. [break][break] Though, it seemed this dress was difficult to put on without another person. It seemed inefficient for Mikoto’s purposes. Though she took both strings in her hand as she stepped up curiously to Jessie. She had not laced shoes before, but if the function was to bring the dress together then… There was a moment where she laces and the loops for a moment. Then she began to lace them appropriately in the criss cross fashion. The material felt soft to the pads of her fingers. Though, Mikoto wondered if it was durable. Her eyes were completely focused on her task, as she looped and tightened. Even her tail curled up attentively. It took her a few moments before she pulled taut the laces then tied it off in a loose knot. “Is this correct?” [break][break] Mikoto felt satisfaction in completing a task. Maybe she, herself, wasn’t so useless. Her tail swishing contentedly behind her. Seeing the dress on a person was different than on the display in the window. “It’s pretty.” Mikoto conceded, a little bit of color on her cheeks. Though, her eyes seemed to be attracted to the fluff of the feathers. “Will this function for your role?” Mikoto turned to the dresses selected for her. The easiest option was to start with the top one. [break][break] While Jessie observed the dress, Mikoto busied herself with shifting out of her own clothes. She did gentle folds and placed them on the table. Her dress didn’t seem complicated. It was much like a long shirt. Mikoto pulled the white dress with the pink butterflies and flowers. She attempted to pull it on and seemed to struggle a little at the narrower part towards the top of the dress. But then gave a gentle tug down and it seemed to fit right on her.
[attr="class","jroverlap"]Sorry! I'll freak out if I don't talk.
[attr="class","jrbody"]Mikoto admitted she’d never actually seen a play, only heard about them. “Oh, well you must come to one of our shows sometimes! We’re Brinia’s Acting Troupe and I’m sure you’d love to see a play sometime. They’re really a lot of fun. We don’t have an actual physical location, we’re more of a traveling theatre,” she explained. “There are plenty of big squares in the city where we set up little stages with moveable props. So our location changes a lot. We’ve even performed in other cities and towns on occasion.” [break][break] As Jessie held the dress up to her chest, Mikoto grabbed the strings behind her back. She seemed a little uncertain at first, but from what Jessie could tell she easily figured out the lacing. The dress got tighter and more fitted as the girl worked. After she tied the laces she asked if it was correct. Jessie turned to look in the mirror. The dress was laced up beautifully, fitting her curves like a glove. “It’s perfect,” she said, because it was. Not just Mikoto’s lacing, but the way the dress fit and looked on her. It was a beautiful dark blue that complimented her dark hair and pale skin nicely. “It is pretty,” Jessie agreed and ran a hand over the feathers on the bodice. “It will definitely work for my role.” Now she only had to hope that she could afford it. She hadn’t asked Mr. Seras what the price was just yet. [break][break] As Jessie was distracted, looking at the dress in the mirror, Mikoto was carefully placing her clothes on the table and pulling on one of the dresses she’d taken into the dressing room. It was white with little butterflies and flowers. The girl struggled for a moment and Jessie reached out to help, but before she could intervene she’d managed to pull it down. It was a simple dress, but pretty. And comfortable, which was probably ideal for Mikoto. She seemed to value function over form. [break][break] “That one looks really pretty on you,” Jessie said encouragingly. “It looks like it fits well. And you can still move pretty well in it, right?” She glanced at the stack of dresses Mikoto still had to try on. Jessie perched in her dress on the edge of the table and settled in. It might take a little while, but she didn’t want to leave the confused girl alone! And she didn’t really want to change out of the beautiful feathery dress just yet, either. Even if the corset dug into her hips just a bit when she sat down, it was worth it.
