Uncapping her own water, she listened to Celes. A general didn’t know much about starting? Were they still talking about volleyball? Cissnei had a hunch Celes wasn’t. Her eyes lingered on the players, before giving a slight shrug. “You should have more confidence in yourself. You know plenty about starting, when you put your mind to it.” She gave a soft smile, as she turned to Celes. “When you were a general, you began a battle with tactics. You started a new guild from scratch. You even kicked off a new game today. And it seemed you started to have fun.” She gave Celes a wink, before taking a swig from her water. Cissnei couldn’t sit back and watch such a strong woman talk down about herself.
[break][break]
Celes seemed confused about a team cheer. Did her troops never have an encouraging chant or a “hoorah”? Sounded more dull than the infantry Cissnei was used to. She gave a reassuring smile and pumped a fist with a small nod.
[break][break]
The whistle rang clearly and they were drawn to the court. And then Celes sat down in the designated plot of sand. Cissnei supposed it would be polite to follow suit. She sat with her legs out and her arms supporting her from behind as she watched. “It took me a while to get used to having fun too. I had some close friends beat the stiffness out of me. Most of it anyway.” She was raised on Tseng and Veld’s stiffness, but it was Reno or Rude that poked and prodded her. One time they caught her unconscious under a stack of paper that had fallen on top of her. Her hand had still been reaching out for the now cold coffee mug. Reno had dragged her to somewhere fun after that, despite her huffing. “I guess it's my turn to nudge someone along.”
[break][break]
The wind blew and the ball was served between the two teams. Each one fiercely fighting to keep the ball afloat on their side. “What do you find hard about the transition?” Cissnei didn’t want to make conjectures, even if she had a few ideas. Plus, maybe it would help Celes to dig a little deeper within herself. And she gave a slight chuckle, “Girl time also means time for girl talk. We can talk about whatever we like and it's a secret between us.” She nodded with certainty. Sworn confidentially. You can trust a Turk with that.
[break][break]
The teams were getting heated as the points tallied up. Someone tried to jump for a ball and smashed their face into the pole holding the volleyball net. The medics came to stop their nose from bleeding. “Oh my.” Cissnei faked a cringe. “We’ll see if they can keep going after the injury.”
