"B-But we should rest a bit! This scavenging mission got a bit out of hand, Cori!"
A pause, then a slow sigh of resignation. "You are right. You have a tendency of alerting danger to us, and in this state, I doubt I will be able to keep us both safe."
The fairy let out a small whine. "I-I didn't mean to! It was shiny and I wanted to see it!"
Smiling through the throb of pain, Lycoris reaches up to stroke her partner's hair with an index finger. There is no animosity in her tone, merely resignation over it all. "I know. I know. Come, that building will..." Step, step, step. She winces as she hits the ground, her legs giving out underneath her. Careless, rotten luck, whatever she wants to call it, it does not help either of them. Through grit teeth, she breathes heavily. "Rina, go without me. I will catch up."
"W-What? No!"
"Rina," she repeats. "You can scout. I will stay nearby. With this leg, there is little I can do. Go to the meeting place, scout it out, and see if the buyer is there. If not, return. I will be waiting."
And that is how, fifteen minutes later, the shrillest shriek imaginable could be heard for nearly a mile in all directions. "DON'T EAAAAAAT MEEEEEEEEEEE!" Poor, poor fairy. It's not her day.

Let the World Shatter, Into Dust
nothing else matters, only us
It starts off as a shrill, headache inducing shriek in the distance, calling for help. That's how it always starts. He'd taken on another odd job, no big deal, just some scavenging that needed to be done. Things were going a bit better for him, not that he would have realized it, but... Huh, that voice sounded fairly familiar. Ah well. Of course, there was that initial bit of inner protest, Fray'd always been extremely selfish, and at times, he had a point. This was not one of those times. Avoiding every person who needed help didn't work out in the long run. Besides, he was still getting paid for the job in the first place, this was just a minor detour, nothing to really worry about. So with a light tug on Ragnabawk's reins, the Chocobo let out a soft kweh before riding off to see whatever the problem is. The bird's more than ready to throw down as well, if need be.
He still needs to figure out how to teach Ragnabawk Chocometeor. After Rabanastre, there was no excuse not to.
Fortunately, it didn't take too long for him to arrive, rather than heroically dive to the fairy's aid, he simply gave a confused look as he glanced around. Right, the fairies could be small, and at times, they could be a little difficult to see at a distance. "Uh, someone in trouble?" It was an honest question! Rina could... Rina could be difficult to work with and that was when he even knew that she was there. Plus, he still had to find out what he was up against!
[attr="class","dorado2"]Near the fairy, a few ghouls amble towards her. Her eyes are full of tears and her voice panic as she dives behind the blond man, immediately viewing him as a figure of safety. Even if it takes her a few moments to realize just who's hair she dove into. Who's a face she hasn't seen in awhile. Who's been missing from a very anxious apartment where his wife nearly paced a hole in the floorboards from stress and anxiety over him being gone.
"Alex?" Rina's voice is absolutely shocked, the emotion outweighing the previous panic. Or knowledge that ghouls are still ambling towards them, albeit slowly and messily, leaving behind drool. For a small thing, that's still a real and valid threat, even if not so much for the Warrior of Light!
It takes all of a few seconds before her to begin shrieking at him on the top of her lungs.
"WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU? WHY ARE YOU HERE?" The shrieks drown on for a good thirty seconds as the ghouls continue to amble forward. Slowly, hungrily. Juicy, noisy bug that would taste delicious. If only it were not so small.
"W... wait. You're here." It dawns on Rina slowly, her eyes widening. "Y-You're here! Cori's gonna... have a heart attack when she sees you! U-Unless the daemon returned...!"

Let the World Shatter, Into Dust

Oh, it's a fairy. That much becomes plain to him as it hides in his blonde hair. Reminds him of Rina, honestly. Either hiding in his hair when shit hits the fan, or hiding in Lycoris's hair whenever he's mad at Rina. That tends to be surprisingly often. Rina... Rina was a handful. There were times where he wondered if they didn't have kids because Rina was enough of a handf--Nah, that one's a bit cruel even by his own standards. Though he'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought about kids. A few moments pass, and Alex readies himself to wipe out the ghouls. A few sword attacks here, some spells there, it might be fun. At least until the shrill voice screeches his name, and then things stop. Wait, he knows this fairy, this fairy is fairly familiar.
Rina?
He remains silent for the most part. It's Rina, alright. He probably wouldn't be able to get a word in right now. Instead, his attention is taken off the lumbering ghouls, black sludge dripping from their mouths. But what he really took from that was that Lycoris was here, too. Thank the Twelve. If it had just been Rina that had been brought over, he wouldn't take that well. The other issue was a daemon wanting to make a snack out of his bride, apparently. "Daemon?" He questioned as the ghouls lumbered closer. It's a flick of the wrist from him, barely an afterthought, and the ghouls are consumed in holy fire. Verholy's a hell of a spell. Plus they have no time to waste. If Lycoris is in trouble, then the sooner he can get to her, the better.
He cracks his knuckles. "Take me to her." It's simple, and he can catch up with them later. But for now, save the wife. And let Ragnabawk have his fun, as the large black bird tried to nip at Rina. The ghouls weren't the only one who saw a juicy bug snack that just so happened to be rather noisy.
[attr="class","dorado2"]Stupid big bird! She's not a snack! How many times does the poor, poor little thing have to stress this? Why, if only they really knew how important she was to... to someone out there, probably! She could be a fairy princess or queen or whatnot! Hmph! No one gave her the respect she deserved, and it only gets worse with time, and-- oh, that's kind of shiny in the distance-- wait, right! Her partner! That's right!
Retracing her flight, the bundle of chaotic energy zooms (and sways to avoid the dumb bird playfully nipping) down the path she had taken. Much to her audible horror, there's no one there at all now! But there's blood, and that's not a good thing. Her head swivels almost in an unhinged manner before she dashes off towards a near-crumbled building in the distance. The scent and splattering are in small measures, but the flow and ebb of familiar aether is what she can find and trace without much difficulty. It doesn't take her long to come across her partner, and when she does, she lets out a shriek of panic.
"Get away from her!" The skeletal daemon, mouth bloodied, pays no mind to the fairy. A new target has appeared, one that it raises its sword in greeting to. Behind it rests a clearly unconscious all too familiar female form, a deep gash near a bruised knee being the reason for slowing her down. The newly created abdominal and neck wounds that the daemon has been feasting from likely the cause of her slipping into temporary darkness.
Daemon or not, against a Warrior of Light, it won't be a long fight.

Let the World Shatter, Into Dust
nothing else matters, only us
Ah, King Titania, formerly Rina. The pixies are doomed. Good thing something like that will never, ever happen. Alex follows her in a bit of a hurry. So if the little trouble magnet is telling the truth, then she really is in trouble and... the blood trail doesn't really help soothe his worries. He really, really hopes it's fresh, and not hers. If it is hers, and it's fresh, he can at least fix it but... His heart sinks as he continues to follow Rina. No matter how much he can repair the damage, the fact is he doesn't want her getting hurt to begin with. He only stops when they finally arrive, and his heart turns to ice as he feels a mixture or horror, fear, and anger. He was too late, of course. Why would it ever be any other way for him?
The daemon notices them, but it's not like it really matters. There's no epic battle, nothing. It's one Verholy. Easy enough. What follows is a bit more illegal. Well, in Eorzea. Pulling the Aether from the environment around him, he focuses it into another spell, blasting away the Daemon. Overkill, but considering everything else, nah, it totally had it coming. Alex did not like it when people went after the wife. He paid it no mind as it was burned in holy fire, simply moving past it to focus on his wife, kneeling down to look at her wounds. Too late. Always too late. This was how it was always going to go, wasn't it? The star globe was removed from his back, and he held back the tears burning at his eyes. She was almost certainly within his limit, but the fact was she was still hurt to begin with.
And so, he focused his energies primarily on the neck wound. That was easily the most critical, rewinding its time, to pull it back to a point where it had simply never happened. He'd heal her, bit by bit he'd heal her, and he wouldn't leave until she was back in perfect condition. He wouldn't be disturbed. He wouldn't be allowed to be disturbed, as the Simalucrum rose from his shadow to stand vigilant of any other intruders.
There is, of course, always the chance of being betrayed. She calculates that whenever she takes a mission. There's been too much in her past to let her take words at face value. But doing things for the greater good is ingrained so deeply in her that she's not sure there is any other way for her to approach a situation. Do what she can, make things easier for others, and come home at the end of the day with the knowledge she's made a difference. It's not as selfless as it sounds, something she's well aware of. It makes her feel needed, useful, and wanted. Most of the time, that's enough to go along with the potential risk of it all.
Sometimes, though, she's pretty sure she should just lay down on the ground and let darkness swallow her up. When Rina didn't return from scouting, she continued her way on a twisted ankle (more of an annoyance at this point) to meet up with the buyer of the supplies she'd spent the better portion of three days scouting. Her gut instinct proved to be correct on it all. It'd been too good of a reward, too high of a pay, too grand of a promise. Later on, she'd track down the smarmy bastard and beat his head in with her grimoire. She just needed to rest and focus on recovering a bit. Then? Then she'd go find her partner and go somewhere to take a hot bath. Layers of grime did not agree with her skin.
That's why when her eyes flutter open to see the charred remains of a daemon and a figure she hasn't seen in Twelve-knows-how-long, she's at a complete and utter loss for words. There's another slow blink, then a soft 'oh?' in absentminded question, before instinct kicks in with a ferocity. Careful hands grip both sides of the Warrior of Light's collar to yank him downwards, closing the distance between them to press her lips against his in a gesture of complete, utter relief. The inquires and aggravation can come later. Wondering why he's there can come later, too.
All that matters, in that moment, is that he's there.

✉ notes: a kiss is not worth dying for!
Let the World Shatter, Into Dust
nothing else matters, only us
He's not expecting the kiss. He's really not. He should've been, though. It's too easy for him to lose himself in it for the moment as the healing stops. And that's the issue; the healing stops. But he knows she's alive, and it's easy for his hands to find themselves gently caressing her cheeks. Too easy, far too easy, which is why it takes the voice of reason to step in, as if Fray is snapping his fingers to bring him back to reality; the wife is still heavily bleeding, best to patch her up, and go from there. So, as much as he doesn't really want to, he pulls himself away so he can actually concentrate on the task in front of him. "I appreciate the warm hello, dear, but let's get you healed, first?" At least he's done enough to keep her from dying if she's active.
He moves to her abdomen, and begins to rewind the time there. Astrology is... Lycoris gets it. Being a student from the isle of Val, it's not hard for her. Most people don't really believe him on how the magic of Astrology works otherwise. Not that he's one to talk, all he's ever really understood about her abilities as a Scholar is that she uses the power of math... and an annoying fairy. She should still have a Carbuncle, right? At least Carbuncles were cuter than Rina. Most anything was cuter than Rina, once you actually got to know the fairy. Part of him almost wondered if Rina had something to do with Lycoris getting into this mess.
But it did carry one realization; she remembered him. Where others had forgotten, and left him only with memories, the one who mattered most seemed to retain everything. There was that moment of relief in his heart. He wasn't sure how he'd handle her forgetting him as well. So many questions, but right now, she needs to rest. He can do the talking, he doesn't mind. Maybe it'd help keep her with him. "This world, it does things to you. Some forget, some don't. I don't know the all of it, but this might be a nexus of sorts; people from different worlds all congregate here at the whim of some force. I've yet to meet someone who came here willingly." He, like everyone else, had been brought here perhaps not against their will, but without knowledge or permission.
Memories were a fickle thing. They shifted and changed, and sometimes disappeared entirely. It would be a lie to say, after what she has seen transpire around her, that the worry of being forgotten never crossed her own mind. It has. Time and time again, it has. What would she do if one day Alex returned to their apartment without any knowledge of who she was? Or what if she met someone in this world that she did not recall? Conversations held and moments shared, all possibly vanishing like grains of sand.
She’s patient as his astral magic takes root further within her. Undoing snippets of her body’s time to restore it to the way it was before. Staying still and listening, and being patient is the most she can do. It is going to exhaust him — astromancy, being the strongest healing magic she knows of, has that understandable side effect — and already she retraces steps in her mind. A suitable place to set up camp isn’t too far. Judging by Rina’s hiccups and little mumbles, she is fit for guard duty. Even if she is adamant about avoiding the “big dumb shadow thing.”
”Is this where you have been for so long? After Eureka, I came home and Tataru told me you were off to save the Scions.” Y’shtola, Thancred, Urianger, Alphinaud, and Alisiae all fell victim to some mysterious force. Had he been successful? Or had he somehow arrived here instead of where he had intended to go?
On the upside, she’s quite content to stay right there and not fuss much. He is warm and welcoming, and it feels like home.
✿ she doesn't agree :c smooches are def worth risking for.

Let the World Shatter, Into Dust

Alex's lips thinned at her question as he bobbed his head left to right and right to left, a soft 'mmm' as he tried best to vocalize what was going on. "Yes, and no." That was a really cheap answer, but the actual answer was... complicated. So he'd try his best to sum it up. "It's a long story, but you know the general plot beats. Edge of Calamity, the Ascians, dramatic climax. Oh. Hydaelyn and Zodiark are Primals, that's new, the Ascians want to bring back their loved ones and go home, and the Echo isn't Hydaelyn's Blessing, it's a part of our soul and the Mothercrystal has some explaining to do. I've been here, there, and everywhere, before getting stuck here for the past... I think several months at this point." He could no longer hear Hydaelyn's Call. The Blessing of Light and the Echo didn't work here. Needless to say, if he ever got back, he and the Mothercrystal were going to have a little dialogue.
The Scions, he had a more concrete answer on. "Our Scion friends are fine. I think. I briefly saw Thancred a while ago, haven't seen him since. I've just been adventuring, staying in obscurity, looking for ways home, and meeting up with people who don't remember me." Gone as quickly as he came. That definitely suited the Bard, but... it was as if he'd completely vanished. As if he was no longer part of this world. Had he found a way home? No, that couldn't be it. He couldn't see Thancred finding a way home and not telling anyone. But... there was the amnesia. Why would Thancred tell a stranger he didn't recognize? This place was a nightmare. No lifestream, aether being wound up in pocketed singularities. This planet in general was a complete mess.
He already feels the fatigue wearing in, and he places a hand on the ground as he moves to her ankle. He draws the aether in, just a little. He has to be more careful here. He can't just fire and forget; the lands here can't take it like they can on the Source. Once again, he sets to work with his healing magic. "I think that's everything. You?" Was he forgetting something? Oh, jeez, was he getting hit with it too? Maybe he--right, the kettle.
