On A Pillow of blue bonnets and a blanket made of stars
Aerith wiped the sweat from her brow as she dropped the last bag of soil into the corner of the room. Brushing the loose dirt off her hands, she gave a low whistle as she admired her handiwork. It wasn't the most amazing greenhouse or a fancy conservatory, but it was small warehouse with a few heaters plugged in that would have to do. She didn't want to say it was better than the church had been; there was something special about that place that always made her feel at ease, even if she felt or knew she was being watched. It was weird since she wasn't particularly religious or even knew what the church had been for before it turned to ruin, but it was the only place flower bloomed.
"Midgar full of flowers...wallet full of money."
The memory hit her like a bus as she frowned through the sentence popping up in her head. It wasn't Midgar and the boy who had given her that advice was long gone, but it still was true even here on Sonora. She tried to shake the thought from her head physically as she shook her head; he definitely didn't deserve any credit especially this many years later. She was the one to start up again in some strange place and make things work. She hadn't deserted anyone on purpose, and she had even found Tifa again.
Aerith was pulled from her thoughts as the door creaked open and a voice warbled out to her. "Dear Aerith are you in here?" Aerith blinked up to see Ms. McKenster walking in on her walker the door held open by a stranger from the street. "Of course!" Aerith replied delighted running over to her giving the stranger a smile before helping Ms. McKenster to a table and helping her up onto the stool.
"Oh when I heard you were holding a lesson I couldn't help from coming," the wrinkled woman said her smile beaming brighter than the heaters in the warehouse. "Oh to think you'll teach me how to make these flowers shine as brightly as you do. You know I've not seen a flower half as pretty since last I left the walls and went to Provo?! It'll make my husband so happy when I go to visit and exchange his flowers on his tomb."
Aerith stopped in her tracks as the words finally caught up to her. She looked a Ms. McKenster but didn't say anything instead moving her hand to her heart. If she'd know that she'd come for this she would have sent her a hundred seeds. But flowers meant something special if they were groomed by someone who wanted them to bloom, and so Aerith kept her mouth shut and gave her a smile. "We'll make sure it the prettiest flower you've ever seen." She pat and rubbed the old woman's shoulder before pacing back to the door.
"There should be some others," she pondered as she tapped at her chin waiting by the entrance. She wasn't charging people since she knew she would always better able to talk to the flowers than others, but she also didn't want the warehouse to be a bust.
This could be really handy, he figured. This new place called Sonora was a bit off to him. From what he understood of Ilsabard, this seemed to be something like it, so he would have to be careful. Not that it really mattered. People seemed really off put by him and he couldn't figure out why. They inched away from him, cross the street when he was coming to meet them, all sorts of things in prder to just avoid him. He didn't get it, not even a little. Even when the little old lady he'd helped get inside for the class seemed a bit iffy with him at first, and he didn't really understand why. She seemed nice enough at least, so he was happy to hold the door open with his foot as she met with who he assumed was the teacher of this class.
That was a cute ribbon, he'd give her that.
And there Alexander was. He'd gotten into botany some back on the Source, and really, it was working with plants and trees and shit. How much different could it possibly be? A gardening class? He could do that, and if nothing else, he might learn a couple things. Plus, it'd be nice to work on stuff that wasn't being used to make arrows or something hilariously lethal. It would be nice to engage in it recreationally for once. It's just... he wasn't really aware of all that passed for gardening in this world. See, from where he came from, it worked just a little bit differently, and Aerith was probably going to get a bit of a shock.
Namely, when he arrived, standing in the doorway, it was with a rather large hatchet (hatchet? It looked more like a battle axe!) in one hand, resting on his right shoulder. In the other, he held the handle of a rather large scythe he'd managed to acquire. At least he was slowly getting his wardrobe back together! A nice green shirt with darkened pants and boots. Granted, he may or may not have had a dagger attached to the back of the shirt, but, well, it works out. "So I take it this is the gardening class, then?" He asked nonchalantly as he looked at the flower girl. He tilted his head, as if waiting to be shown inside and to his seat.

Aerith stood by the the entrance for just a moment before walking and busying herself with helping the old woman up onto her stool. Each workstation had a small pot already filled with ripe fresh soil. To the left of the pot were a myriad of seeds, so each person could choose which flower they wanted to grow the most. She had some rose seeds, some lily, some tulips, some marigolds, and even some gysahl green in case anyone wanted to grow something for their chocobo. It was a nice treat even if they weren't trying to win some race at the Golden Saucer. To the right was small lamp to keep the plants warm and growing over the weeks. Aerith didn't notice the figure in the doorway as she fretted with sorting things out until he spoke.
"It sure is," Aerith said not looking up for the moment as put down a watering can next to the seeds. "I'll come show-" Aerith stopped as she finally looked up to the entrance way only to see a man with an axe and a scythe in his hand. Aerith just stared slack jawed for a moment, moving herself in front of Mrs. McKenster in case this was some whack job. It didn't take long for Aerith to jump to conclusions though and her jaw tightened and her lips pursed as she stormed over to the entrance way. "Just who do you think you are?" she demanded her hands on her hips glaring up at the blonde man her eyes glimmering with anger. "If those guys still think they can send some thug to make me stop, and cut up my flowers, well it hasn't worked yet! It won't work now."
Aerith changed her stance and crossed her arms instead looking from the scythe to the axe. Maybe just maybe, "Or are you just dumb?" she asked a little of the anger in her eyes dissipating. "We're not harvesting the planes or chopping down trees, we're growing flowers. Or are you just trying to compensate for something showing up with such big tools?" Aerith smirked before taking a step and throwing her hands in the air. "Well, listen up. If you want to take this class, you're gonna have to ditch the grim reaper stuff. Gardening is about creating, not destroying." Aerith closed the distance again a finger in the man's face leaning up towards him. "Well what's it gonna be buddy?"
Stop what? Alexander can only look at her with a blank expression as he's being accused of... what the hell is he even being accused of? He can only look at the old woman behind Aerith with a look of utter confusion. He motions towards the flower girl while doing so, as if silently asking the question 'Are you seeing this?' And make her stop? Why the hell would anyone want to bother a flower girl? Well, no, that made sense. Botanists often supplied the Gods' Quiver and the Wood Wailers with materials for their weapons, allowing them to wage war as needed. Okay, no, now it made sense. Perhaps this woman was being targeted for her contribution to a war effort, especially now that she was trying to pass such knowledge around to other people? Definitely couldn't have that if that was the case. So that made a bit more sense as his golden eyes trailed back to her, but he still gave her a deadpan look.
Wait, it wasn't that? It was the tools he'd brought with him? Now that just threw him off, what was all this about--she was describing farming! Growing some flowers and crops in your soil at your house! He'd really made quite a killing growing Thavnairian Onions at his--OH FUCK his house was going to get demolished! Here in Zephon there was no way he could actually stay in his house and the wards were very adamant about keeping plots open for other adventurers! All that gil he put into that house was going to go up in smoke and it made him want to die inside as he had to fight the urge to cry at this revelation.
Right, first things first; deal with the angry flower girl in front of him. Well, not so much that so much as stoke the fire. He focused back entirely on her, and realized he was probably about to be thrown out of the class. Well, fuck it, this was one of those things where arguing wasn't going to get him anywhere. Naturally that just left him one option; push her buttons. And he had just the method, that one way that never failed. The one trick that everyone hated him pulling out. The second Sorel family technique (what was the first? Find out!) Alex just cleared his throat as he opened his mouth. "No need to be so prickly." Yep, we were really doing this. "You really shouldn't be so grim, you know." If she wanted a fight, she definitely got it. "After all, you reap what you sow."
He gave her a shrug. "But I must say I'm rather dumb-founded by the idea of not using an axe or a scythe." This was going to be an all night affair, you see, and she had started it. "It's rather plain to see that we have different definitions of botany." Should he bother putting... yeah, at least do that, what he was about to subject her to was going to be torturous enough as it was. He strapped the axe and scythe to his back, "And all I will say regarding compensation is that I'm a grower. If my stem's your first thought, though, you must be rather thorny." And gave her a pair of fingerguns and a grin. She wanted a fight, well she had one.

Aerith tapped her foot impatiently waiting to see if the man was gonna either leave or follow her simple requests. What she was expecting was for the man to either leave in a huff or sit down and be ready to learn, but what she wasn't expecting was to be barraged with some of the worst puns she had ever had to endure. The nerve of some people. She tried to interrupt ,but saw he had finally put away his ridiculous gear. Well, if he was going to behave, she was ready to start the class. She had to deal with Turks before, one guy slinging some puns wasn't going to get to her. His last comment hit home though as her face turned as red as her jacket and she stammered for a moment "Excuse me?!" she finally got out as she refused to look him in the eye. This was war now.
"I've been around enough plants to know a prick when I see one," she said her face still flushed as she turned from him. "As for your stem, well it doesn't matter how pretty it is if it's snipped from the roots." She made scissor motions with her fingers as her confidence started to return to her. "And I bet finding a place to plant is real hard for you too," Aerith tutted and gave him a pitying look before her mischievous grin betrayed her. Still she had had a class to run and one cocky guy wasn't going to stop her from making Sonora a little prettier than she had found. "Come on then take a seat, bud." she said pointing at one of the planters before walking over to one herself.
"Now the first step is bonding with your seed you're about to plant," she said picking up a zinnia seed and holding it gingerly in her palm. "Plants are just like people you know. You've got to show them love, pay attention to them, make sure they know they can count on you, listen to them," she started looking at the seed her zealousness washing away in something a touch sadder. She gave a small smile to the seed as she thought about it and her friends. She closed her eyes for just a second before bouncing back.
"Mrs. McKenster we're doing a rose for you like you asked," she said helping the woman find the right see to hold. "As for you," she said turning to Alex with a tilt of her head, "Pick whichever one you want. If you're as green thumbed as you say you should know what you want. Though a think a tall sunflower would be perfect for you." She giggled at her own joke as she looked between the two of them. "Now take a minute, get to know your seed, and then tell me what it's telling you."
