This is a fantasy based on reality. Yet I've been having these weird thoughts lately... Is any of this for real...? ---------------------------------------------------
"I thought we'd never get out of Sonora." Lumina confessed, despite her lovely visage being super delighted. Why wouldn't she be, the little smuggler had reaped a very nice share of Diamond Dust and the city was none the wiser. Well, maybe there were somewhat aware that it could be floating about the black market. Didn't matter, for Lumina, she was free despite the setback. It was a wonder how her faithful dog associate got out a second time. Lumina couldn't believe her eyes as she'd taken refuge in the surrounding area until the caravan could be repaired. At least she did a good deed, protecting the trader's wares from other Raiders to the North.
Now that they were reunited, they made the voyage south and west to Provo. A trading hub with plenty of goods but little money. In fact, the money problem made this a poor choice for her wares. See, she was within the inner marketplace wheeling and dealing, much to no avail. At least it didn't seem like they'd have any luck. The last trader did offer up something quite handsome in the form of goods. Goods weren't exactly great for two people on the move. "Maybe I should try and get us a caravan. Hitching a ride around the country is costly, having our own means to keep on rollin' would be more practical." she explained as she merrily kicked her legs up with each stride. It looked entirely silly and childish but well...
"A nice caravan, some good food supplies and maybe some safer goods to sell as we need. That'd be a fair alternative, even if I'd prefer money." she continued, clearly having fun living a trader's life. Honestly, she hadn't thought much on where she was from or recovering much of her own memories. Why should she? So long as she could have fun, trifling details like that could wait. That and she made a promise, to keep Zell safe and accommodated. That a young girl was the SeeD's meal ticket was largely amusing but people had needs and acting as the adult among them came natural to Lumina.
"Hey, are you listening?" she asked, stopping dead in her tracks. Naturally, Lumina turned to her earnest companion, Zell. Left brow raising slowly as she placed her hands on her hips. A short distance from where she halted, another merchant stall was up ahead. Quite frankly the place was bustling. People were running about like headless chickens, chasing deals or offering them.

What a trip this has been so far. Zell had been accused of stealing, then actually stole a uniform from a guard, fought some bandits, got lost in Sonora a second time, fought a bartender, and then finally escaped the city with the aid of that same bartender. Considering the fact that he had only been in this place for a week, the blonde teen had quite an eventful time. Of course, it left him with a bad impression of this cruel world.
"Hey, are you listening?"
His partner scolded him for daydreaming, which of course he was guilty of. It was so hard not to. Ever since they left Sonora and started the journey towards Provo, there had been nothing but empty landscapes with an occasional traveler that they crossed paths. And while some of the scenery was gorgeous, Zell also found the constant travel somewhat boring.
"Yeah, yeah," he said dismissively. He hadn't yet relayed the information to her, but the blonde was known for getting cranky when he hadn't eaten in a while. Their rations for the trip were already running low and being the gentleman that he was, Zell cut back on his sustenance intake to allow Lumina to consume whatever she needed to.
"Can we maybe get some food, first?" he said, pointing over towards the vendors ahead. "We won't be any good as traders if we are starving to death, right." His comment ended with that loudmouth stomach of his audibly rumbling, almost like one of the monsters they had already encountered.

Hearing his very audible stomach caused the young Farron to break out into a giggle fit. Zell really wasn't himself when he was hungry. Which made her wonder how often he was himself, given his appetite. In that way he really was like a dog and so she found herself smiling. "Alright, alright." she managed to get out in between bursts of laughter. Her gaze shifting to the direction pointed.
She'd gesture for Zell to follow and approach the vendors in question. It was fortunate that she had arrived in this world prior to Zell. It meant she had a better lay on the land, was able to amass some gill and information as necessary. Along with connections back in Sonora to the Black Market. Being resourceful was just in her nature, that much she knew even without her memories. "My companion is in need of some sustenance. Do you have some stuff that can be eaten right away, as well as something more filling for later~?" she'd inquire as she waved her hand and some gill manifested within her clutched gloved hand.
"I hope this should suffice." she'd add, before turning to look to Zell. There was a fair bit of Gill. There rations may have been running low true. He was also being quite a gentleman, she could acknowledge that. Not that she needed much to eat given her size. Besides, Lumina seemed to love sweets so that's where her focus tended to go more often than not. A jarring mix of mature, helpful almost to a fault, yet childlike in many ways.
"Don't hold back now. I did promise to look after you, so just eat as much as you want, okay?" she looked quite concerned for him in this moment. No surprise, she was astute after all. Very astute at that, though in case he might feel a bit guilty, she'd proceed to purchase some stuff for herself. Something energizing with a side of something sweet.

Ever the reliant puppy, Zell followed Lumina towards the vendors in hopes of a meal. That monster in his belly needed to be quelled soon, otherwise the hunger pains would start to become too much for him to handle. It was one of his few weaknesses.
"Yeah, hold on," the vendor said in regards to Lumina's inquiry. Zell waited as patiently as he could until the man at the booth provided them with some food. "Here, these are quite popular with travelers."
Zell could see that a pair of transparent bags were handed to him. One of the bags were filled with dried meat with the label saying Coeurl Jerky, while the other was filled with green and brown marshmellows that were covered in sugar. Its label said Toneberry fluffs. The bags weren't big, but not exactly small either. They'd definately hold off Zell's appetite until it was dinner time.
"This looks so good," the blonde teen said, quickly opening the bag of jerky and stuffing a few pieces into his mouth. The meat was dry and stiff, yet flavorful and savory. A reflexive moan of pleasure came from him, unwillingly of course. He just couldn't help it.
"And this can be for later," the merchant said, bringing out what seemed to be a fairly large platter that was wrapped and sealed. The contents couldn't be seen, but Zell was sure that it would be something else that's as delicious as the jerky was.
With the transaction completed, Zell passed the smaller bags to Lumina so that he could pick up the larger meal and carry it to wherever she was leading them to. "Alright. Food, check. Shelter..." His head swiveled around to search for an inn, which he spotted further down the road. "Check. Do you wanna turn in for the night? Maybe take a break from all the walking?"

Zell genuinely made Lumina laugh, he made her smile too. Simplicity was so foreign for Lumina, who thrived on chaos. Being thrust into this new world, practically made Lumina giddy. There was seldom a moment that she'd been bored thus far but without Zell...? Well, it'd all just amount to busywork. Something to distract her from the single biggest emotion that threatened her day in, day out.
Loneliness. Lumina was happy and thriving because she wasn't alone. A realization that came over her as she watched Zell interact with the vendor. Even his inadvertent moan of pleasure, the blonde was easy to please and she noted as much. "Oh!" Lumina spoke up finally, when given the smaller bags. She decided to partake in the sweet treat, before mouthing a MmMm. Sealing the bag shut and taking out a handkerchief to clean up her hands. She looked to the direction where the Inn was, then looked to Zell. She contemplated for just a moment before giving a slow nod.
"A long break would do us some good. I'd also like to get some new clothes." she'd admit before looking unusually solemn. "Is there anywhere you'd like to go or could we just... Stay in, talk for a bit?" she closed her eyes for just a moment, feeling her cheeks flush. This wasn't really her speed. However, something inside her, desperation perhaps; drove her to... Take this, her relationship with Zell, seriously. If she was going to do that, then there were things she needed to tell him. No, not about the smuggling, just... a little about her. What she remembered, what her goals were, which certainly included him.
After her inquiry, she slowed her pace somewhat, before ultimately stopping right at the door of the inn. Given the expression on her face, it was a rare, highly out of character look. A hint of uncertainty in her eyes, as she began to make a calculated decision. How much could she tell Zell? How much should she tell him? Would he be worried if he knew that she wasn't just stranded in this world by herself? That her current life was worth twice as much? Once she got an answer, Lumina would open the door and head to the front desk.

It was good to know that his selection in treats pleased Lumina. She'd done so much to help Zell that he didn't want to disappoint her. And now that they had something to appease their appetite, shelter was the next thing on the list.
Lumina took an interest at the nearby inn. Like most of Provo, it was kind of rickety, but it was on theme. Plus, he wouldn't say no to sleeping in an actual bed for once instead of a laying in a sleeping bag next to a camp fire.
"This place looks alright," he said, approving of her selection. She wasn't vocal about this place in particular, but he could tell by her actions that she would be content with it. "How about we catch some Z's, first? We can get clothes and supplies after a good night of sleep."
Something had been off in the girl, something that Zell couldn't quite put his finger on. She was bothered. His first thought was that he did something wrong and she didn't want to tell him. At least, not publicly.
"Are you okay?" he asked, leaning slightly closer to see if something truly was bothering Lumina. "Come on, we'll get our rooms and chill for the night. We can do all the talkin' inside."
Having made up his mind about the establishment before them, Zell turned and walked inside. He didn't have the Gil for the room, but surely Lumina would take care of that until he found a way to earn some cash.

Getting rest first and getting clothes after made sense. So why did Lumina feel so... insecure in this moment? She couldn't help but look down at her outfit, pinching at the bottom of her halter top. Gazing at the duster that was oh so fashionable. Once more, Lumina would nod albeit absentmindedly, in agreement.
Deep in thought, Lumina nearly missed what Zell asked. Registering instead that he was leaning closer to her. Much closer than usual, for him at least. Invading others personal space was of little consequence for the agent of chaos. Until the reverse happened, which caused her to become entirely red. "Yes!" was her reply, both immediate, yet clearly indicating she was startled.
Prompted to go inside, Lumina followed along and as per usual, was the one to handle their finances. To that end, the Innkeeper remarked that she was very mature for her age. Which caused Lumina to pout, muttering, "I'm much older than I look." Lumina wasn't known for having a short fuse, nor for being moody. No, those attributes were for her other self. Likely, still sleeping ever so peacefully back home. The passing thought of her waking up and moving heaven and earth just to find Serah, was amusing. It distracted her, briefly, from the dilemma of this world.
Taking the key, she'd examine the room number and make her way accordingly, resuming her leading position. Something was definitely up with her but until they had privacy, Lumina wasn't going to say anything. To that end, once she found their room door, she'd open it up and take slow steps inside. The room was... well it seemed comfortable enough, a feeling meant to evoke being 'home' was certainly in the air. Honestly, it'd have to do regardless and once Zell was inside, if he didn't close the door behind him, then she would.
"Sorry." Lumina spoke up finally. "I just... I realized, despite how long we've been travelling together, I haven't really told you much about myself. I was too busy worrying about..." she looked to Zell for in that moment, smiled, before continuing.
"...So, I figured I should share a little. At least, what I can remember." clearing her throat, she gestured to herself.
"...This, isn't what I really look like. That is, I used to look like this, a loooooooooooooooong time ago. I chose this form, to help someone important remember the past, remember who they were and what they're missing." her explanation was probably cryptic, though for once, she wasn't trying to be. "I'm not alone either, well...not truly. Inside me, I'm protecting the heart and soul of my little sister." she sighed, not feeling like this was really enough. Yet uncertain why she wanted to be so forthcoming either.
"Lumina... that's just a code name. We're a long way from our homeworlds, so it doesn't matter much here anyway. My real name is Claire, Claire Farron."
If you don't fight for what you want, don't cry for what you lost.
The interior of the inn wasn’t too fancy. In fact, it had a homey feel to it. Even the innkeeper seemed like a decent person, although there was some concern regarding Lumina’s appearance.
“I’m much older than I look,” she said in response. Until now, Zell never really thought about her age. He didn’t need to. But the way she said that she was older was just…odd.
By the time they got to their room, The SeeD entered with great enthusiasm, not even bothering to close the door behind him. Thankfully, his partner was there to look after his carelessness.
“Finally!” Without a second thought, Zell flopped face first onto the mattress. It was soft, much softer than he’d expect from a place like this. He was ready to just pass out, but Lumina decided that this would be the best time to have that conversation she was eluding to.
“Huh,” Zell said when hearing her apologize. He rolled over and sat up on the edge of the bed in confusion, which began to show on his face. For whatever reason, Lumina felt the need to express her regrets about withholding information from her travelling companion. She gave Zell the details of her past, which was something that he never felt the need to ask for. It was private information, after all, and he always felt that he had no business poking someone about their history.
Then the bombshell came, and Lumina laid out all of her cards onto the table. Her truths were revealed; from changing her image and hiding her appearance, to the second soul inside of her body. Even her name wasn’t real. Lumina, or Claire, blew his mind with the amount of false information that he had been given.
“Whoa…” It was hard to come up with much more to say. He wasn’t sure if this was some kind of joke, as Lumina loved to play little tricks on him. But when enough time passed, he could tell that she was serious. More serious than he had ever seen her, actually.
“I don’t even know what to say,” he admitted, letting out a sign and lowering his had into his hands. Days and weeks were spent traveling the dirt roads between Sonora and Provo. Zell was a wanted man now and had no one in this world that he could trust besides Lumina. But now? He couldn’t believe this, he just couldn’t believe that—
“So you’re telling me…. That you can shapeshift?!” When Zell looked up, his face had shifted from confusion to excitement. “Like, really change into other stuff?! That’s sooo cool!” He jumped up from the bed and rushed towards the girl, leaning in once more to examine her in circles. Then the barrage of questions came. “What can you turn into? Can you be other people? Can you turn into me?” He then paused and gasped loudly. “CAN YOU TURN INTO MONSTERS?!?!?!”

Scattered Memories

Lumina had become tense, sea blue irises focused upon Zell. She knew his mind was blown; that everything she revealed, was a lot to take in. Her expression softened, even as she tried to hold back the fear of rejection bubbling within. All of that tension, all of her worries, immediately washed away with a simple, inquiry. One that came from the most boyish, whimsical place that she'd seen in so long.
Speechless, that's what Lumina was, complete with eyes open wide. Her lips parted slightly in her own disbelief. A soft gasp escaped her lips when he rushed over to her. Leaning in once more, causing her heart to skip a beat. Then for it to get louder and louder as he circled her. Complete with a tinge of pink along her cheeks. When the barrage of questions came, she blinked at first. Then nodded in response to being able to change into other people. When asked if she could become Zell, she humoured him by...shape shifting into an exact replica of him. The process was probably a bit off putting. Wisps of black and smoke surrounding her form like some viscous substance. At least it was quick and when she was done, she looked at him with a raised brow. Waiting to see if he had requests.
The request... shouldn't have surprised her. Monsters, of course... so with his own expression, Lumina smirked before replying with his own voice. "Sure but I prefer to summon Monsters to help me instead. They're my friends and allies, remember that Behemoth back in Sonora?" she'd wink before changing back into the form he knew her by.
"I try not to abuse this power, it's...unpredictable, dangerous. People...would misunderstand or worse if they knew what it was, the full extent of my capabilities." she admitted and it wasn't a humble brag, there was genuine fear in her voice. "...Besides, I'm protecting my sister from this power." she whispered before taking the time to make her way to the other bed. Gracefully, she sat down upon the edge of it and crossed her legs. For a moment, she was just silent, processing everything before she started giggling.
"There's more to Light than meets the eye. That's why illusion magic and lightning magic, are my specialties. Though I guess I'm better equipped than most mages in this world~" humble brag resumed, old Lumina had clearly returned, maybe?
If you don't fight for what you want, don't cry for what you lost.
Zell’s questions were met with answers; answers that the vulnerable girl was willing to give up. Lumina confirmed that she can change into others, including Zell himself. This was proven true when she turned into a mirror image of the SeeD,
“Wow, that's so cool!” The surprise transformation made him jump back a little bit before examining his doppelganger. “Not bad! Although he’s still not as good looking as the original,” he quipped in a bragging manner. “The arms are a little small, too.” Zell knew that it was a perfect replica, but to boost his own ego, he flexed in front of her/him to show off.
Upon returning to a more familiar form, Lumina also explained her connection to the monsters. She could summon them, like the Behemoth back at Sonora. But there was a reason behind her actions and why this girl was the way that she was. Someone she knew was to be protected; protected by her.
“Your sister, right?” Zell asked in regards to the one that Lumina needed to protect. “Well, I think you’d do great protecting her. You saved my rear, after all!” His compliment was followed by a short laugh while his hand extended out to pat Lumina on the head. He was happy that she felt comfortable enough to confide in him and let out her story. As for Zell, he didn’t exactly know his own story.
“I—I really wish I knew about myself,” he said as his mood shifted. “I don’t know if I hit my head or somethin’, but I don’t remember anything before landing in Sonora.” Zell turned his back to her and put his hands behind his head as he paced around the room. “I met someone else that had amnesia, too. Whatever’s going on, people from other worlds are showing up here.”
Despite his usual cheerful childishness, Zell lowered his arms and sunk his shoulders in defeat. “I just wanna know where I came from. And for some reason--,” he sighed, “I feel…homesick? I know this world is not where I belong and I want to go back. I’ve gotta find something or someone that knows how to help me remember my home, and can help me leave this place.”
