Cissnei looked over the people of Torensten, and she could not help but crack a smile. They were eating all kinds of sweets and meats with gusto, while washing it down with their choice of drink. Some chose liquid courage. From where she stood, she could see the beautifully dark table clothes with a lighter cloth on the tables holding such mesmerizing foods, drinks, and trinkets. Some of the more colorful of booths in muted vanillas and navies even housed games that went from trying to catch fish to the usual advice booths for those who had questions. Needless to say, the dull Torensten was now colored beautifully with its citizens.
One of the hosts was dressed in his subdued colors, a mask of a fennec fox on his face. He held a paper and stood on a raised platform so he could get people’s attention. The crowd finally looked up at him wide eyed. “Torensten. We have endured not only this period of chaos, but also everything thrown at us. We are a strong people. Without us coming together the past few weeks, none of this would have been possible. It is together we stand and together we now make-merry. I implore you to look to your left and to your right. Without each other, you would not be here now. With that being said...” A grin spread across his lips, “I suggest you make excellent drinking partners today.” He chuckled and gave a slight clearing of his throat “I mean dance partners. For those interested in learning the waltz, please find a partner.”
There was a slight murmur in the crowd, some already found humor in the event host’s words. Cissnei was content in watching the crowd, knowing that there was little she could be taught in the waltz. She smoothed a hand over the skirts of her red gown, as she peered from the dark mask. She was trying to decide whom she needed to talk to in this event to figure out why the council suddenly decided for this large party. It was certainly something she could not miss and was bound to be full of information and opportunity. But the anonymity of it made her want to toss caution to the wind. Who would know it was her?
She could fill her chest fill with the possibilities that she had never been allowed to do before because of professionalism.
Watching the couples pair off, she saw the host find his female partner to assist in the lessen. A woman with a beautiful golden mask stood waiting at his side. But it appeared there were a few women on the dance floor without a partner. The host made the announcement more people were needed, but there seemed to be no new influx of people. Without knowing why, Cissnei felt the pang to dance. No, it had been a long time since she had a dance partner. Regally she moved from her wallflower position to the group of women without a partner. “If I may?” She held out a hand making eye contact with each person. Her other hand fell behind her back as she gave a courteous bow. Some looking at her as if she was not what they were looking for. She did not mind.
She's a tramp she's a vamp But she still kills the dance
There was no question about it, Aerith's mask was going to be the prettiest thing this masquerade had ever seen. Aerith held the finished product up to to the window as the last bit of sunlight fell down to illuminate the petals she had hand sown into the fashion of a masquerade mask. Aerith placed the string round her head as she sauntered over to the vanity mirror in the hotel she and Tifa were staying in. Oh, poor Tifa. How Aerith had to beg and moan and plead before the woman had finally given in, and the two of them had taken to the road to make sure Aerith got to go the masquerade. Now here it was a few hours before, and Tifa was still getting herself an outfit.
Aerith had tutted at the idea of arriving around, but as she looked at her figure in the mirror any doubt faded away. The red lace hugged her in all the right ways, and the brightness of the flowered mask meant she there would be no choice but to notice her. She couldn't put her finger on it, but she could have sword she had worn something similar before, but also had the feeling that this time things would be a lot more fun. Grabbing the invitation from the nightstand, Aerith made her way down to lobby and across the street towards the capital building.
The sea of beautiful costumes and painted masks had her shaking the letter in her hand in anticipation. So many possibilities, so many to meet only to never know who they really were, the magnitude of it all was overwhelmingly exciting to her, and she practically smashed the invitation into the attendant's hand who checked its authenticity before allowing her admittance.
Aerith stood in awe for a moment as she took in the opulence. The marble staircase led down to a massive ballroom like out of a storybook. The ceilings were so high it made her dizzy looking up at their painted panels. Dozens of crystal chandeliers hung from up high, and down below candelabras were lit to heighten the mood. No, Aerith wouldn't have missed this for the world. The atendent helped her down the marbled stairs til she was safely at the bottom before returning for the next woman in a dress a little too tight to take the stairs alone.
Aerith swirled through the dance floor that was pretty void of dancing at the moment taking a glass of champagne off one waiter's platter and then another's. She still wasn't sure why people liked the stuff remembering the last time she had had it Balthier, but she wouldn't let that stop her from blending in. She also didn't mind that slight warmth the second glass afforded her as she gulped it down with abandon.
Aerith meandered closer to the main stage, still scarcely populated as the night was still in its infancy. She had a piece of cheese to her mouth as waltz lessons were announced. Dancing! Aerith spun from the cheese platter almost knocking it over in excitement. She hastened over to the already coupling crowd and smiled at quite a few men, but too slow and far away before other women had claimed them. She hmphed as she past them giving an upturn of her nose as her options dwindled.
Then her opportunity presented itself. A woman had asked a gaggle of other women if they would like to dance. Well, it wasn't like some practice could hurt. "You may," she giggled grabbing the woman's hand from behind before taking it to swing herself in front of the woman. She was taller than the red head even more so know in her heels. Aerith pressed her free hand to her mouth. "We can practice together then show these boys a thing or two later." Aerith smiled kindly at the woman before switching hands into the starting position.
The gaggle of ladies might have snubbed Cissnei, but she did not mind. It was their loss at not learning the dance. Besides, Cissnei was sure that none of them held any information on the deeper purpose of this masquerade. They were simply girls trying to find dates for the night. And why not? Wasn’t having a good time the façade of this party? “Very well, ladies.” Cissnei gave a polite acknowledgement of their turning her down. But before she could straightened, someone else had taken her hand.
Cissnei saw the delicate fingers on her’s first, before turning. Her eyes followed the arm up to the slender should and higher to the mask and the green eyes behind it. “Of course. The boys wont know what hit them.” Cissnei said invitingly, drawing Aerith closer. She moved into the proper Waltz position of placing Aerith’s hand on her bicep, while Cissnei slipped her hand along Aerith’s shoulder blade. Their other hands holding and out to the side. “Your mask is beautiful, as much so as your eyes.” Cissnei complimented her partner. Her eyes then turned to the teachers of the dance on the dais in front. “Have you waltzed before?”
The man and the woman on the stage shifted into their positions, idly talking about why positioning was so important. A band played off the to the side a slow and easy to follow waltz. Music filled the air and swirled around the colorful costumes and jaunty characters. Cissnei could hear some people grunting at stepping on their partners toes. The instructors once against “ahemed” and began to point at his feet so that the students would look and could follow. Cissnei’s gown swished as she began to lead Aerith slowly into a dance. It was a gentle test to see how well Aerith picked up. “Let me know if I move too quickly.”
She's a tramp she's a vamp But she still kills the dance
Aerith giggled as the woman complimented her mask. "Watch yourself, or those boys might think you're into me," she joked with a soft smile allowing the woman to position themselves just like the instructors were doing. "I can't say I've ever had the opportunity," she admitted as they began the first set of steps. "Doesn't mean I haven't danced around my room pretending like I knew what I was doing though." Aerith giggled again as she watched the instructor's feet as well as the woman in front of hers movements.
It seemed to come pretty naturally as Aerith felt the music, almost as if it were instructing her more than the words and patterns were. She hummed along as she and the other woman continued the dance. It felt a little weird that someone shorter than her was the lead, but it didn't stop Aerith from enjoying the moment all the same. The only thing she could think to make the moment better was if it was indeed a nice handsome man leading her through the steps instead.
As she mused, the music stopped and the dance came to a close. Aerith smiled and did a small curtsy. "Thanks for the dance mam," but as she spoke her stomach gurgled something fierce. That was right! She had been so excited about getting ready that she had forgotten to eat before hand. A thought was coming to the surface, "I'm starving how bout you?" she complained rubbing her stomach. Aerith looked over at the waiter's walking around with their hors d'oeuvres and frowned. "I wonder if we can sneak into the kitchen and find something actually filling." She mused a small spark of mischief sparkling in her eyes.
Cissnei gave a slight shrug at Aerith’s remark but did not lose her smile. Aerith most certainly was not her type. She could already tell from this little interaction. But there was something particularly familiar about her. Yet, the Turk could not put a finger on it quite yet. “What if they do?” Cissnei answered her with a question and did not bother to look around at the people surrounding them. She gave her dance partner her full attention, not really needing to look at the instructor to know the proper maneuvers.
The two instructors made slow movements and repetitively. After watching the crowd do it several times, they asked the orchestra to play the proper music but slowly. Her and Aerith took up the dance, and Cissnei gracefully guided her with the magic. Aerith was a natural, thought it did not seem that it was at following instructions. It was more something Aerith could feel in the music. And soon the music picked up to its proper speed. No one stepped on toes, so that was a plus. But Cissnei turned her eyes from Aerith to past her shoulder to see if she could get any intuitive feeling on anyone in the crowd.
Cissnei gave a nod of acknowledgement and bow to Aerith, as she moved them off the dance floor. “The pleasure was mine.” Though Cissnei seemed a little surprised at the sound of Aerith’s stomach. “I’m not particularly hungry…” However Cissnei looked at the waiter’s serving, then past them. Gossip tended to happen in the kitchen. Maybe she could plant her phone or a recorder she bought in Sonora under a cabinet something. Her eyes studied Aerith for only a second. Aerith could be useful in orchestrating this under the illusion of food. Cissnei shrugged. “But, I suppose it couldn’t hurt to make a request. What is your plan? Perhaps we need disguises.” Cissnei tilted her chin to point at the servers and their clothing. “Or, we use a diversion?”
“They tend to take you into the kitchen or restroom if wine gets spilled on clothing. Or help comes out of a kitchen if a mess is made.”
She's a tramp she's a vamp But she still kills the dance
"I wouldn't know," Aerith said finally casting her gaze away from Cissnei for a moment as she took in the decadence. It sure was a far cry from the Slums where there only pretty things to look at were her flowers and the smiles on people's faces as they did their best to live in such squalor. She doubted she ever really would. This decadence, this luxury, was hers to enjoy for the evening, only enjoyed hidden behind a mask, and then it was back to being the flower girl. Aerith's smile faded a little as she continued thinking. Wasn't there something more she was supposed to do? Something only she-
"We're already wearing masks. So perhaps a distraction?" Aerith hmmed finally turning her face back to her dance partner. But how? This place was so full, it would take something truly big happening to cause enough of a diversion for them to slip away as something unfolded. Or perhaps things would be taken care of calmly a discreetly to avoid the party grinding to a halt. She pondered for a moment as the dance kept them twirling to and fro until she saw her opportunity. "Follow my lead," she said before twirling Cissnei away from the dance instructor's small square.
"Just act natural," she asked as she lead Cissnei in something a bit more up tempo to cover some more ground faster. "Do you think those are glued down?" she asked as the table approached. A cascade of champagne glasses shimmered in the light. The liquid quivered in their glasses as people walked past. All it would really take was one good. BUMP. Aerith the table with her hip as she attempted an unnecessary twirl. The glasses teetered and began to fall, the tinkering and shattering of fancy glass sounding like off key triangles to the orchestra.
"Oops," she understated as the liquid crept towards her heel and she broke free of Cissnei's hold to avoid stepping in it. Maids seemed to pop out of nowhere and Aerith tried to pinpoint where they were coming from as she stepped back away from the gasps and whispering. "C'mon." she said grabbing Cissnei's hand and pushing through the crowds as they came to survey the scene heading towards where she believed the maids and waiters seemed to be spawning from.
Cissnei curiously watched this odd girl. She seemed to already forget about her stomach. Or at least seemed distracted by the finery of the party. And by the sounds of it, she had not really put much thought into a game plan. Masks were fine distractions, but the waiters and staff wore distinct uniforms with their masks to mark them appropriately. But, Aerith seemed to already be putting her plan in motion.
Cissnei was not sure if she should be amused or annoyed. Regardless, she decided it would be interesting to see what this girl was capable of. Cissnei found that Aerith was moving off the dance floor. Which moving at a fast pace, while off the dance floor certainly was not natural. Though, perhaps the crowd would think Aerith had drunk a little too much. Cissnei eyed what Aerith asked was glued down. “Probably not.” It would be odd to glue something down that guests should probably take. But it didn’t matter what Cissnei thought. Aerith was already in motion.
Cissnei lifted her skirts to look down at the mess Aerith made. Well that certainly was a plan. Cissnei eyed the uniforms that the maids wore. She considered asking one to help her with a stain caused by the mess. Then she could knock her unconscious and take her outfit…however…
Aerith had once more grabbed her hand and pulled her in another direction. Cissnei ground her heals and pulled Aerith to a halt. “And what is your plan? There are still more inside. Though the less there are the easier it is to sneak food.” Cissnei watched as the maids seemed to be hustling. “It will make your food…endeavors…” Cissnei shook her head, still in disbelief that this was happening for food. “...more feasible if we have a cover story to be in there.” Cissnei then took purposeful strides to one of the maids, “I have a stain on my dress from the spill. But the napkins are all in use to clean up the mess…” Cissnei pulled up some of the fabric on her skirt to show the maid.
The maid keenly looked at it, before replying. “Of course. This way please. We’ll get your stain out.” The maid took Cissnei by the arm and led her toward the kitchen. Cissnei looked over at Aerith and tilted her head in the direction of the kitchen she was going. She hoped Aerith would get the hint, but just in case she didn’t, “I came with a friend…is it ok…if…” Cissnei feigned being a little too shy to ask for more inconvenience. The maid looked at Aerith and gestured for her to follow as well.
