Hythlodaeus chuckled at her joke, then listened to her quick summary. "It's not as easily avoidable and careless as it sounds." he said "Think of it like this. There was a weapon made by men. An emperor found a way to subdue it with a great war that caused many losses, but then wanted to rule upon other men with an iron fist. And thus did the resistance appear.. and cause a complete revolution at any cost." This time he tried to keep it as simple as possible, no names and no details. It was the best he could think of doing. Then she rephrased her questions, and he chuckled once again. "There is not nearly enough aether on this planet to create such a thing as a Concept, or a Primal as strong as Zodiark and Hydaelyn, at least for what I can see. Not even if Emet-Selch was involved, probably. And there are no special crystals in which to contain them, and no paperwork to fill, and... 'no' would be the short answer."
After he told her about the body shifting, he chuckled once again. "To modify your own body, if you were an ancient, you would only need to be able to manipulate aether properly. Yet another completely normal thing I fail at." He smiled cheerfully, even though this thing in particular still bothered him at times. "And no. At least, not me. As for him... well, I believe he would have gone back to our homeworld had there been a way. And if our most powerful sorcerer cannot do that... than none of us could. All I can say is that this does not look like one of the shards of Aetherys - my homeworld. It does not have the... right shade I would say." he corrected himself right away, not wanting to overload the girl with information once again.
He chuckled about the 'friend who can make people new bodies' part. "Well he cannot - not anymore. He used the last bit of the Goddess' energy to make ours." he quickly explained, then he went on about his friend and his fight with Emet-Selch and all the rest. So he ended up chuckling once again. "Indeed, it would be for the best. They have saved their own world and another, by defeating whoever crossed their path. That is a quick and easy summary of what happened in the end."
The next question caught him completely off-guard.
He blushed suddenly and stiffened, opening and closing his mouth a few times while trying to speak - but at first he was unable to. Then he chuckled. "Very curious indeed." he remarked, then he sat with his legs stretched outwards again. "Solus is my best friend. One of the two, at least. Well. The only one in one piece." He sighed softly, with a smile on his lips, soon after. "He was our best magician, and the one and only person who could truly understand what it meant to see. The same way as I, I mean." His smile gradually became sweeter, his eyes softening their expression as if he had him in front of him in that very moment. "When not at work - which was rare, I admit- we would sit somewhere and just... watch the aether swirl and dance all around us. We needed no words or anything else, we just existed next to each other and.. and that was.. perfect."
He sighed. "I know full well he does not feel the same for me. I have made my peace with this aeons ago - I had already done so before the whole thing with the gods had started. And I am also pretty sure he can see the way my soul shifts when I'm with him. But. He is my friend, and nothing more. For better or worse. I am most definitely not one to impose myself on him. Not on serious things, at least. I love to pester him and cause him trouble together with our mutual friend, and ask him to do things for others only because I know he will if I ask him... but that is all. I would help with his job, listen to his problems.. and he would do the same with me. That is all. He is my family."

After letting out another chuckle, Hythlodaeus went on talking about the fall of his people, and did not truly pay as much attention as he would have wanted to the girl. Her feelings. He denied with his head. "Do not fret. It was a choice. All of us had chosen whether or not to support the Convocation's ways." he replied. The mere thought had shifted the girl's hue into a darker, perhaps scared shade. It was a good thing. "Yes, we did. I was the one who would have the final word on their existence. Have them revised and corrected. Were you to see just how many different sharks they had submitted..." his expression turned into a resigned and half-desperate one. "If I see another shark in my life it will be too soon." He muttered.
As she asked about Meteion, he denied. "Not an Ancient, a concept. One of those 'monsters', as you call them. Hermes had created it to explore our universe.. but he asked her the wrong question. The meaning of life.. is quite hard to grasp. And thus did the concept fall to despair, and bear the idea that if everything was to end, no one would have to suffer anymore. She had learned to see death as a blessing." he corrected.
He then went on about the final blow, the one that ended the world as it was known. And thought for a moment before replying to her. "I.. am unsure how to reply. I was on the one called the Source, the remains of the original world. But I am sure the members of the Convocation at the very least could travel among them. I am not too sure as to how... but I believe it could be because we are supposedly ethereal. I would say that those who wanted to travel only needed to leave their bodies behind and go possess a new one in the next shard."
He thought about the fact he may have come back to life after Zodiark's death. "Not really, no. I was still only a soul. This body of mine is identical to my true one, but was created for me by a... new old friend. My previous one has died within Zodiark." He then waited for her to finish processing his words and ask her a series of possibly rhetorical questions that brought him to chuckle once again. "Well.. my new old friend. The same one that has defeated Emet-Selch, our most powerful mage, in battle. And to be completely fair, he has ended both our Primals. They were both weakened, as Zodiark was still fractured -and Hermes had taken his power for himself- and Hydaelyn was at the end of her life. She fought her Chosen, whom she had previously blessed, to see if she could entrust the world to him. And he did have help in each of these cases from, as someone called them, 'Champions from beyond the Rift'. But yes, a partially rejoined but still fractured version of my other best friend. It was the three of us back in the ancient times, really."
He regretted saying that word the very moment it came out of his mouth, but of course she had heard it. And there was no turning back. But at least he would have a little time to mentally prepare. "Hmm... do you have any questions? If you want me to tell you anything else, you need only ask."

Hythlodaeus chuckled as the girl stood and twirled. "Indeed I can, and.. well, yes, mostly pink. But there are also shades of red, purple and orange." he replied with a smile. "You must be ambitious. Curious, terribly so. And you probably like to be popular, and in the center of attention." He continued. Then he started talking about his music, and her response made him chuckle. "Something on those lines, I suppose."
Then it all degenerated into the Final Days. He nodded at her words. "It was. Life had almost gone extinct." At what she said next, though, he made a thoughtful expression. "Maybe. But as far as I know it survived. My world, I mean. It was deeply changed, but even if in pieces, it survived. Unless it died while I was unconscious in the lifestream. And yes, my dear friend Emet-Selch is here.. but I shall not tell you where. And I believe he does not use that title anymore, as it would have no meaning here." He then let the girl talk excitedly and make her questions, until he took a deep breath. "Alright, from the start."
"Ancients. This is what our people were called by those who came after us." he began "We were the first inhabitants of Aetherys, our Star - and by star I mean planet. It's.. a matter of habit, we all used to call it so." He smiled slightly, then continued. "We lived on that planet, and a selected few of us Ancients became the Convocation of Fourteen, which as I said was our government. Every member of the Convocation had a title, and each of the titles meant taking responsibility for a few things: they all had a role, an area of expertise, and a Bureau - a Ministry, we could say. I used to be chief of Emet-Selch's "ministry", the Bureau of the Architect. My job was to oversee the creation of concepts, which would be called.. fiends, here, I suppose? Animals, perhaps. And items too, to be fair. I had to review the applications, and confirm or deny their creation, or to send the most dangerous ones into... well, the containment facility."
He took another deep breath. "Long story short. One of us had created a concept without my authorization. Meteion was her name. She was sent to look for life beyond our Sta-uhm, world. And she came back with only despair and the resolve to end all life. Thus did she cause what we called the Final Days, in which out people were so scared that our creation magic turned against us. Instead of creating what would help the planet prosper, we created monsters bound to destroy us. So, due to the extreme circumstances, half of our population, me included, sacrificed their lives to become the fuel to Zodiark's power. He stopped the concept, and was then left there as it was."
He took another deep breath. It pained him, in a way. to speak of these matters. "Then another one of us decided to make her thoughts known: she firmly believed that Zodiark, if left unchecked, would bring destruction upon us just as much as Meteion, although in a different manner. So she summoned Hydaelyn together with half of the people that remained. The two deities fought for a very long time against each other, then Hydaelyn landed the final blow - one so powerful it did not only split Zodiark, but the entire world, together with its inhabitants, in fourteen shards. Fourteen separate realities overlapping one another, but never touching." he sighed. "In case you need it: M-E-T-E-I-O-N is the concept, Z-O-D-I-A-R-K the god, and H-Y-D-A-E-L-Y-N the goddess."
He went back to sitting with his legs crossed. "As for me, I could only watch the story unfold after I merged with Zodiark. And then I observed the fragmented beings that came out of my people's shattering. Ages passed, empires rose and fell, heroes were born, and eventually died. Until one of those shards found me. They killed Zodiark once and for all, unleashed the Final Days upon the world, and then saved it by confronting Meteion as the Endsinger. But after that... As I drifted into the lifestream, I awakened here. Lost, confused, and without a purpose. And just as weak as any other day of my life. But at least I found my reason in my beloved-" he hesitated. "m-my friend. Friend. Nothing more than a friend, I've made peace with that. My friend... I believe he goes by Solus, now."

As he slowly saw confusion take over the girl's soul, he tried his best to explain, but evidently ended up leaving her just as confused as before, if not more. So he simply nodded when she asked if she could recap. "Almost perfect." he said in the end, with an understanding smile on his lips. "Emet-Selch is a title. Every member of the convocation has a title, and is always called by it, forsaking their true name. You could say it.. becomes their identity. Except for old friends and family, of course. The Convocation Members are more or less the only people who are allowed to be different from all the rest." he explained, chucking in a slightly nervous manner around the end of the sentence. He had never felt like that was completely fair, but he was used to it and thus never complained about it too much.
"As for their job, overseeing what we called the Underworld, or Sea of Stars, or Lifestream... that is part of the job, yes. To escort the souls to the Sea, to keep concepts in check, and many other things. But yes, I could and can see souls - and not only that. I can see the aether that permeates everything, from the air to the ground to animals, plants and people. I am not sure how to describe it. You may see me with my gaze lost in nothingness, but in truth, I would be staring at the currents of aether swirling in the air. They can be... captivating, and astonishingly beautiful. Streams of energy taking the most curious shapes and hues." he kept going, hoping not to confuse her even more.
"As for my music." He changed position once again, now sitting on his knees. "I was a child when I first laid hands on a musical instrument. And even before, I would sing all the time." He chuckled as one of many memories floated into his mind. "I would spend hours playing and singing without even noticing my hunger until my stomach would kindly remind me I needed to eat something." Then he sighed lightly. "I did not truly kept it a secret, but.. growing up, many started to address me because of my Sight. Only few people would ask me of my music, while to everyone else I was simply a prodigy in soulseeing. As I mentioned before, even the seat of Emet-Selch was given to me for that very reason. So I gradually stopped mentioning it, unless with the few friends who I knew would love to know." His smile turned somehow nostalgic. He missed those times dearly.
"I had no purpose in life, besides helping my friends. And that I have done, first by working in the Bureau of the Architect, doing the paperwork for Emet-Selch, and then.." He stopped for a moment, lowering his gaze as his hand closed into a fist. "Then I made a choice. As my people was on the verge of destruction, I chose to sacrifice my life along with half of our Star's population, to summon a god that would save us. The very first Primal... although I believe they are called differently here. Eikons, or Eidolons, if I remember correctly." He still tried to keep the usual smile on his face, although he knew he would not look happy. "Then a Goddess was summoned by half of the rest of us to stop him before he could do damage. And the very Star, along with anything and anyone in it, was shattered."
He took a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I.. did not mean to talk about this." He took another one, then closed his eyes. "The reason why I know so many stories is because I have seen them all from the Lifestream. Heroes, legends, wars. I loved to watch the story unfold." He smiled more sincerely now, after opening his eyes again. "And many, many years later.. an old friend has found me. Or, well, a shard of them. He has freed my soul from the god's chains, and allowed me to rest. Until I awakened here and found Emet-Selch again. And finding him... gave me a muse to sing for."

His eyes captured the slight shift in the girl's aether as she looked at the ground next to him. Was it a slight disgust? Perhaps disappointment? He was not entirely sure. Well, he would have offered a better seat, but his ability in aetheric manipulation was definitely lacking -or he would have created something for himself as well.
He chuckled at the girl's words. "Of course. H-Y-T-H-L-O-D-A-E-U-S." He spelled the name somehow slowly, then he chuckled again. "I promise there are worse-sounding names on my Star." He extended his legs and leaned slightly backwards keeping himself up with his hands. "Yours sounds like a difficult job. To convince people to talk about their life is not always as easy as it sounds - and to have them change their mind is even worse, I know full well. It is brave of you to try."
He smiled softly, his sight lost into the aether currents once again as he looked for what to say. "Let us see, about myself." He went back to sitting with his legs crossed and rested his head on his closed hand. "Well, I am very old, to start. And I am only starting to let my music be known now, after.. a very long time. I had always and only played for my dearest friends before. Not like I could do much else beside that, of course. Paperwork, and song, are the things I do best."
He looked at her for a moment. "Soulsight aside, of course. That is technically my best.. asset, let us say? Nothing short of granting me the seat of-" he hesitated for a moment. "But of course you would have no idea, would you? About Emet-selch, or any other members of the Convocation." He chuckled. "They were our... Government, more or less. The Convocation made decisions, and the others followed. Each of the members has a specific duty to uphold, and Emet-selch was the Keeper of the Underworld, the one who could see and keep in check the flow of aether and souls. This ability of mine.. it is one of the requirements for shouldering such a role. The ability to see aether, and souls, and so much more. A rare gift, among my people. One my best friend also had. He was.. one of the very few people who could truly understand how it felt. And he was better suited than me - I turned down the job in his favor."

He was singing once again, his instrument and voice emitting sweet melodies as many times before, releasing aether into the air. He smiled softly as the music resonated with his soul - and with the ones of his listeners. There were only two things he was good at, after all, and one was his ability to see aether, while the other one was his skill in anything music-related. As the song continued, the chords shifted, and eventually faded into the end. His voice fell silent, his strings stood still, and some of the people left, while others applauded him. Some even left a few coins beside him. He was satisfied, even just by knowing he had brightened someone's day.
Among the crowd, of the people who chose to stay for a little longer, one soul captured his attention. He had seen that kind of aether before, but not that specific hue. He widened his smile slightly when looking in her direction, trying to look beyond the aether and at her physical figure. She surely stood out even in that regard, although for him it was quite difficult to see "normally". He could not really turn on and off at will his Soulsight, although he was gradually becoming a little better at it.
As the girl approached and introduced herself, he followed her with his gaze. "Greetings." he replied "Hythlodaeus, travelling ministrel." He let his guitar rest leaning onto his seat, then gave her a warm smile. "Of course. I always appreciate the company, and make time for whoever may need it." He gestured for her to sit beside him. "What would you like to know, my friend?"

"It sounds like a kind name. And thank you, I am honored of being called talented." said the bard with a sweet smile on his lips when he heard the girl's name and her compliment. It was more or less his standard expression, just perhaps even friendlier than usual. A little later, after saying he could play for her or they could keep company to each other, he listened to the girl's response and widened his smile a little. "I have not led such an interesting life, I'm afraid." he replied before chuckling "But I am more than glad to share a few stories with you." He followed her gaze and gesture when it wandered in search for a quieter place to speak comfortably in. "As you wish, Terra. I will follow you."
While following the girl to the table, the ancient let his eyes wander, following the currents of aether that swirled and travelled through everything and everyone around them. The shades he could see with his Soulsight were different from the ones back in Amaurot or Elpis. He loved to look for the tiniest details that made the difference, be it in the hue or shape that the aether would take while roaming. It was beautiful and unique, unlike anything else. He truly felt lucky for this gift to have been bestowed upon him at birth by the very Star.
Once at the table, he let his instrument rest on the ground, leaning onto it, and took a seat in front of the girl. "Allow me to ask you again. Would you tell me your story, Terra? You look like someone.. who has suffered from great pain." he started, now focusing on her. "But also like someone incredibly kind, and loving. Am I reading you right?"He concluded, trying now to focus on her actual face instead of the colors of her soul. It was hard to ignore his gift, he could not really turn it off and on at will, but at least he could try to see through the aether. Maybe.

Hythlodaeus
Ancient | Age ? | 194x75 | M | Bard
Looking around in the desperate search for aid, Hythlodaeus saw an unfamiliar soul coming closer. He stopped to look at it for a moment before his attention was captured by the man holding his wrist once again: as he tightened the grip, the bard winced in pain and attempted to use his free hand to loosen it. Needless to say, he did not manage to - until someone captured their attention, allowing him to finally break free. The lavender-haired ancient did not run away -he could not even if he wanted to, and that he knew full well- but he massaged his own wrist with a slightly bothered expression. "Heavens.." he muttered, before moving his gaze to meet the woman's figure.
He witnessed her gather fire-aspected aether and then turn it into a flame, that darted towards her target, but Hythlodaeus's eyes focused on her soul instead of her magic. Made curious by the very peculiar composition of the same, he raised his eyebrows in a slightly surprised expression. He had never seen anything like that. Yes, souls did tend to lean more towards one element than the others, but this looked.. so oddly balanced, for how unbalanced it was.
He forced himself to look away, not wanting to seem rude, and looked once again at the man standing before him, as the others seemed quite unsure about what to do. The man was looking at the woman. He emitted something similar to a growl, then stared at the bard as if he wanted to kill him. He had not answered the woman's questions before, and only took one hesitant step back after her request. So Hythlodaeus took a few steps backwards himself, trying to get closer to the woman. "I am sorry for the trouble, milady." He said, then he addressed the man again. "May I at least ask why you were still following me? I have given you all the money I had. What have I done to upset you?" He was still walking backwards. As an answer, the man ran towards him and grabbed him by the neck of his clothes. "You slept with my wife, that's what you've done!"
The bard was completely taken aback by the man's words. Judging by his soul, he was telling the truth. But he was definitely wrong. "You are.. convincing, for sure, but this is very unlikely. I can assure you I haven't been in bed with someone in... Well, eons." Replied the ancient. "And.." he hesitated for a moment. He had a feeling it would not end well.. but he had to try. "And... I am in love with someone." "With her, of course!" "No, I-" but before he could finish his sentence the man hit him with a punch right on his cheek. He had seen his intention, so at least he managed to reduce the strength of the blow by moving his head slightly, but it still hurt. "Please, listen. I am in love with-" This time he actually managed to break free from his grasp before the second punch could hit.
"Heavens, I am in love with a man!" He blurted out in the end, rubbing his sore cheek. "And I have been for the last few millenia! Well, more, probably. You have nothing to fear from me, you only have the wrong person." It was rare for him to lose his smile, but this misunderstanding in particular got under his skin very quickly. And the surprised expression on the man's face quickly faded into an amused grin. "Oh? Listen to this pink-haired freak! That's even worse." He was soon followed by his friends with one comment or the other about his sexuality, or even his gender. Apparently, his delicate features were reason for mockery. Something on the lines of "a woman with a man's voice or a man with a woman's face" or hints about what would happen after "bending over".
Hythlodaeus took one deep breath, then turned around. He wanted to walk away together with the woman, but he was pulled backwards by the braided hair and slammed onto a wall. As that same man focused on him, the other three men walked in between the woman and the other two. "Well, guess we can have fun with her instead. She's here anyway.." said one of them. But no, he truly had more than enough of the whole lot of them. He sighed. He really did not want to resort to violence. But. He would not let that person end up in harm's way because of him. "No you won't-" he muttered, but before he could do anything he felt The man pull on his hair again. "Think about yourself."

He had once again ended up in trouble. He had no idea what he had done wrong, but apparently these people held a grudge - and a big one. "One, two, three, four, isn't this a little unfair?" he asked, chuckling nervously. They surrounded him at first, asked him to surrender his belongings.. but he had close to nothing except for his lute! He did give them the few coins he had gained by singing, but it was clearly not enough for them, they thought it a joke. Probably because of his clothes? They were undoubtedly well kept, but.. that was done with magic, needle and thread. Certainly not with coin.
And so he was forced to escape, or try to.
He did not remember if he had any power that could help him out of the situation, but at least he could try. So he attempted to strum a melody on his lute to calm them down or at least confuse them, but as soon as he struck the first chord one of his assailants took the instrument from his hands and threw it on the ground. "My lute!" he almost shouted, attempting to catch it, but the man pushed him backwards onto a wall instead. "I would worry about myself if I were you."
He was not a magician. He was not a warrior. He was only a bard, and an archer, and an office worker. He tried to focus, to check in the aether currents whether he could find an escape route. Then he suddenly remembered. He could teleport. Considering he was not sure to have an anchor point for somewhere far away, he had to teleport somewhere nearby, and hope that it would be enough to confuse the assailants. So he focused, and teleported right behind them, and next to his now half broken lute. He picked it up and started running, hanging it on his shoulders, then he summoned his bow and aimed towards them. His aim was not to harm them, but to slow them down and grant to himself a swift escape, so he went for a repelling shot, infusing his aether in the arrow. As it hit the floor just one step in front of his assailants, it emitted a shockwave that moved the men a few yalms backwards, startling them.
Then he started running again. Too bad he was not a very quick runner either - he could walk for miles and miles without being tired, but running? He could only run from Hades, and only because his friend let him. He was not too surprised when one of them grabbed him by a wrist and pulled him backwards. As he tried to break free, he looked around. Perhaps there was a kind soul around who could give him a hand?

Hythlodaeus
About Hythlodaeus
He's an ancient and a bard, first and foremost. He's friendly and easygoing "by default", gentle and kind, but also terribly smug and cheeky - and he would almost never refuse to pull a prank on someone. He loves to tease, and does so often.
He has very low self-esteem and often drinks to forget this. Although his Soulsight and ability with the bow are remarkable, he still considers himself almost entirely useless. His purpose in life is to help and support Azem and Emet-Selch.
He enjoys reading and most importantly he absolutely loves to play his lyre and to sing, to write and play music.
Plot ideas
★ The Wandering Ministrel ★ Well, title says it all. He's a bard, and as such he wanders and plays his music all around the world. If you ever need a background to your adventures, a moment of respite or something on those lines, he's the ancient man you ought to call.
★ A helping hand ★ He might have a little bit of a problem with aether manipulation, BUT he would jump in someone's aid without a second thought if he deemed it necessary. It is also true that, while being an ancient, he's not actually too good at fighting and thus might be in big trouble if his pranks or sarcasm get on someone's nerves. He also has a habit of drinking too much when he feels lonely, useless, or otherwise upset.
★ A link of souls ★ Considering he can see people's souls and their color, and distinguish one from the other even at a distance, he would recognize at the very least as familiar someone who he has met at least once in his life. You've witnessed his performance? Been a long lost friend? A shard of someone he once knew? He will know. Or at least have a faint reminiscence.
