The villagers from another settlement were certainly not kidding when the foot of Mount Hotan was a ghost town. Not only were these empty, abandoned houses & buildings around were devoid of any life, but there were the spectres. These spectres were not easily defeated, and even Aymeric admittedly had trouble taking down the shadowy beings who came to attack. Its no wonder they say it is truly a town of ghosts, no wonder the foot of the mountain was to be feared, and not approached casually. [break][break] Even if one were not engaging to combat against the Lord Commander, they all danced around, making sudden movements upon the corner of his eye. They made strange sounds, make a presence as if they are just right behind. They were pulling all sorts of tricks to disorient the elezen who ventured alone. [break][break] Realizing he made a wrong choice to venture such place alone, Aymeric noted how foolish it was for him to think he can explore alone like the Warrior of Light....He is no Warrior of Light, he doesn't have the fortitude the hero would have. Well, even heroes need their own companions do they not? He should have seeked a few comrades before visiting such a dangerous place. Just before the azure-clad elezen was about to turn away and back to safety, in the distance, he saw another person in the distance. [break][break] Was he an actual being? Or was he a spectre? He was certainly different, though. His hair and skin, all eerily white. It didn't help that his armor was that of a whitish color too. Cautiously, the Lord Commander made the approach to the other, who turned out to be, admittedly, a beautiful man with an ethereal complexion.[break] "Ah, um. I assume you are wandering here on your own? I noticed tis quite dangerous here, with these rather powerful spectres dancing their dance of delusions,"
Cecil closed his eyes to the suffocating silence. There was nothing but the howl of the wind and the rattle of forsaken places. He did not know what had befallen this village. Was it war? Famine? Or merely the march of time? He knew only that what had once been was no more. He felt its memory linger in the cold.
Where was he? That was a question he could not answer. How had he reached this place and why? Cecil’s eyes trailed to the star-pricked sky. It was dark -- that sky -- lit by only the light of a single moon. He knew now the truth of the other. The Lunarians. His heritage.
All of it gone like a fleeting dream. Cecil shivered.
Something passed beside him. Cecil straightened and turned, staring at the empty space. There was nothing but snow and mouldering wood. The town square was deserted as were the grim shacks set around it. He was alone, and yet…
He felt it again along with the echo of laughter. He turned on his heel, gripping tightly at his sword. ”What?” Nothing. That chill rolled in his heart. ”Show yourself!”
For a long time, there was nothing. Only the wind and his stifled breath. Then he heard it -- laughter, shifting snow, and-
He raised his shield just in time to block the blow. It staggered him, and he slid back on the ice, jaw braced. A figure stood before him now -- skeletal in the moonlight. Cecil stared, his eyes widening. It was a human form shriveled gray and gleaming with an eerie shadow. It watched him with hollowed eyes that glinted with malice. All around, he felt them converge from their ruined homes.
He closed his eyes. ”The people of the village.” A heavy weight fell upon his heart. Even now…
He unsheathed his sword and brandished at his side, imbuing it with his own holy light. He looked upon them with renewed determination. ”I will put you at peace!”
He did not know whether they understood his words or his intent. He knew only that their will was unchanged. He saw them approach, saw them raise their taloned hands against him, and then-
Footsteps. Cecil froze and so did the wraiths. He looked up the mountain to see the shadow of a man. This one was alive, and Cecil felt a swell of relief followed by fear. To come now could mean death. He opened his mouth to cry out a warning only for the wraiths to freeze in place and then dissipate as though made of nothing but mist. Cecil blinked at the space they left behind. He supposed they had been as taken as much by surprise as he had.
"Ah, um. I assume you are wandering here on your own? I noticed tis quite dangerous here, with these rather powerful spectres dancing their dance of delusions."
Cecil laughed weakly. Yes, he could certainly say that.
”I was only passing through,” he answered. ”It seems the dead have found no rest.” Again, he felt that same wave of sadness. If he could continue on unbothered, would it be for the best? The thought left him uneasy.
”I see that you are as alone as I.” Cecil lowered his sword and turned to face him. ”What do you say to traveling together?”

From the way the other offered to work together, the Elezen was getting the sense that the man before him was not one of the restless spectres plaguing the now abandoned village. Aymeric was nonetheless pleased to see at least another soul striving around, and find some safety within numbers. The white-haired male made a good suggestion as this was not a safe area afterall with these vengeful spectres who seem to bear some sort of resentment towards the living. [break][break] In fact, said man seemed to be a man lost, wandering in a place where he seemingly unluckily landed upon. What a terrible predicament. Aymeric mused, as he realized how people seem to land in random places at random times, being selected by something or someone randomly, then arriving at a random place. It was an uncontrollable fate. Yet, the Elezen wondered if it is a test made by the gods to see if the ones they chose are truly worthy to wander around upon these lands? Cruel indeed, but the lands here aren't necessarily kind outside of the city, and each soul must find a way or another that they are worthy to survive in the harsh world. Any world is harsh, but everyone learns how to endure where they live on in any way do they not? [break][break] "I will be happy to make your acquaintance sir. I do not think one would wander in a place filled with restless, vengeful spirits," The Lord Commander had a smile curved upon his lips, giving a firm nod in agreement to work alongside this mysterious, pale man. His thoughts seem pure, noting how the so-called monsters, the spectres are restless and are unable to find the peace Aymeric himself believes they desperately need.[break] "You may call me Aymeric. And you are...?" A hand stretched out to the pale man.
The stranger was dressed as a noble, clad in silks and gold. His pointed ears were adorned with jewelry. His cloak was lined in silker. Yet still, he wore the armor of a knight with his greaves and the pauldrons that dwarfed his shoulders. Cecil’s eyes pricked with curiosity. It seemed a strange thing for a man of such wealth to don the armor of combat, but he didn’t care to judge. If anything, it only strengthened his respect.
”Cecil.” Cecil smiled at him faintly before sheathing his sword. The cold wind pricked at the back of his neck. Worse still was the overwhelming sense of darkness. ”I’m not yet acquainted with these roads. The villagers offered me direction, but…” He looked out at the broken ruins of the town. What had once been stone houses now stood as dusted shells of their former selves. There were no fires, no well-trodden paths, no bushels of grain or the smell of roasting meat. This place was drained of life. What remained were only shadows.
”Do you know what happened here?” Cecil frowned. ”What became of the people? They seem under a curse.” Down the path was a faded coat abandoned and half-buried in snow. Beside it was an iron-wrought spear. They had not surrendered easily.
The snow crunched behind them -- not a specter’s step, but something mortal. Cecil whipped around, hand at his sword before he saw it -- the slender form of a deer. It stood at a distance, watching with rounded eyes. It blinked slowly. Cecil laughed weakly. ”I’m jumping at shadows.” He relaxed his stance and turned to the noble again. ”We should keep moving,” he said. ”Would you join me? We’ll be safer together.”
