With little in the way of information on how to get herself (not to mention the other trapped denizens of this world) back to their homes, Freya had decided to at least make herself useful, taking on odd jobs involving the dispatching of monsters and other threats to the people traversing the trade routes of this place. Quite often, these jobs were posted in the taverns dotted around the land, but this had become a particular favorite haunt of the Burmecian. The port district just outside the city of Torensten had an air to it that somewhat reminded her of Lindblum, though much closer tot he sea than the public districts of the mountain top city. With the Mist being so dangerous to both mind and body (without even mentioning the monsters), no one traveled by sea and she had seen decidedly few seafaring vessels. The smell of the ocean air was pleasant to her, though right now the smell of alcohol was quite a bit stronger.
Today, she had attempted to take on yet another monster hunting assignment, but it seemed that this job would take a bit more settling than usual. Seemingly, the monsters had gathered to a point that their being there was being described as an infestation. Though confident in her abilities, she was no fool, and so when she had been informed that another would be taking the job, she had no problem in meeting with them to discuss the best way to tackle the situation. They shouldn't be long now, and it wasn't as if she would take much spotting for the human mercenary. She had yet to come across anyone even vaguely resembling her, so as she nursed the pale ale that lay already half drank in front of her, she sighed as she continued to wait. Though her hat obscured her face somewhat, she was well aware of those around her and would know when the stranger arrived. As he would know her by the tail and her muzzle, again something most of the people of this land seemed to lack.
While Caius didn't live here, he had a home out in the countryside after all, Torensten had become a home of sorts to him. It was where he was based for his endeavours and it was where the Dragonblades were currently holed up and trained. So when reports of there being an infestation of dangerous monsters nearby began to crop up and a job was placed on the board to deal with them, Caius did not hesitate. Caius was used to hunting monsters, so this wouldn't be too much of a problem for him and Vordun, he figured. Though he supposed he should have expected to find out when he took the job that later, another had taken it as well. He had been asked to meet with them by the one who had put the job out, and they were lucky that he hadn't left yet or he would have left on his own to deal with it.
Either way, the woman that he was meeting was described as having a non-humanoid face, and a tail. A tail, huh? It definitely wasn't Zidane in that case. While his old friend had a monkey tail, his face was as human as anyone else's. And he couldn't think of anyone else he knew that would fit that description. He had been told they would be heading to the docks to wait, so at the least, he was able to narrow down their location.
With the sea in front of an array of tables, it was a nice place to be. It didn't take long for Caius to see someone with a tail sitting at a table, with a hat covering most of their face. Though he could see a long nose protruding out, which likely meant that they were the one who fit the description. Caius did not make his presence known at first. Instead, he eyed the half-finished drink she was nursing and what kind it was. With that, Caius turned and walked away. When he returned, he held two ales in his hands. One for him, and one for a show of good faith.
Caius gingerly sat down on the chair opposing hers, before resting the two ale on the table. After a few seconds, he slid the second to her, figuring the least he could do if they were to work together was top her off since they would be taking some time to discuss strategy.
"You wouldn't happen to be the one handling the infestation job, would you?" He inquired then, in a calm tone as brown eyes scanned over her a moment. He knew it most likely was, but the least he could do was ask just in case.
As she continued her silent contemplation, she noticed the blonde human male take the seat opposite hers, sliding a new drink her way. Was this the one she had been waiting for or this world's version of Zidane? Then again, he wouldn't be quite so subtle, mouthing off loudly about how beautiful his intended target was and how he wanted to take her somewhere nice. Zidane...she's noticed a change in him before they had parted. Perhaps he had fallen fro Princess Garnet? As in actual infatuation and not just his latest crush? Now would not be the time to dwell too much on her past acquaintances, instead focusing more on the task at hand.
The man, whom she had noticed watching her and had been keeping an eye on in return since he had entered, spoke, inquiring as to whether she was the other he had been tasked to find, just as she had. If given a description, then it would be difficult to mistake her for anyone else she had so much as seen in this world. This man certainly fit the description that she had been given, although many humans looked more or less the same to her eyes.
"Yes, I am Freya", she introduced herself, reaching for the full glass in order to take advantage of the offer. She would not turn down a good will gesture, though she would remain on her guard. For now, he seemed calm, but would he be willing to talk things through and see reason? Time would tell.
"I assume then, that you are the other handling the infestation crisis?", she spoke calmly in return.
"May I then also assume you also know of where it is we are to go and what we will be up against?" She of course knew what they would be expected to deal with, she had read the request carefully, after all, but she just wanted to ensure they were on the same page, so to speak.
His suspicions were confirmed, then. The mercenary gingerly nodded his head in turn to confirm that he was here about the monsters as he then took a swig of his own drink. A show of good faith and figuring a good first impression would be practically beneficial to their working together, were the motivations to his method. Cut and dry. Once she had introduced herself, and had given her a moment to try her new drink in earnest, he gently placed his mug on the table and held out a hand to shake.
"Caius."
With introductions out of the way, it was time to get down to business. Freya wanted to reaffirm what they were up against, likely wanting to confirm her own information. He understood that, and he nodded his head once more.
"By my information, we are dealing with an infestation of creatures on the outskirts of town. So it shouldn't be all that hard to find" Caius remarked, taking another swig to wet his lips before continuing. "I have asked my companion to scout the area. It is my hope that he will recognize the large amount of creatures focused in one area around the outskirts of Torensten and can report back on their whereabouts. Once he has a bead on them, we can head out and take care of it."
He could tell by her expression that her guard was up. Good. She should be. Caius did make sure to accommodate for this though.
"I will be heading to the edge of town shortly, in order to wait for him and receive the report of our target's whereabouts. I have full confidence in his ability to find them and ease our time spent looking as much as possible. You may join me when I head to the meeting place if you like and we may leave immediately, or I can look for you afterwords. Your call."
The male introduced himself, to which Freya nodded and listened to what else he had to say. Good, so he knew and understood what they had been tasked with. Not only that, but it seemed as though he was already on the case, and acquaintance of his scouting ahead as they spoke. Good thinking, but Freya herself had yet to make any such beneficial relationships. Perhaps now then would be a good time to do so, assuming of course that the two could work well together as allies and not get in one anothers way.
"A good call, provided he is wise enough to take care of himself and be able to report back", she remarked in reference to his asking of his companion to take a look at the situation while they spoke. It would buy them more time to get to know each other a little, see if they could indeed work with one another. It would be dangerous otherwise, to be unprepared and unaware if they would have each others backs.
"I would recommend though, that we finish our drinks and join your companion in the field post haste!", she suggested. From what she had heard, the threat wasn't likely to get any worse in the time it would take for them to do so, although the sooner they took care of it and nipped the problem in the bud, the safer the travelers and townsfolk would be. Yes, perhaps it would be irresponsible to put it off too much longer, but she felt it was important to get a read on her would be comrade.
As if to answer, the man, Caius, informed her that he would be making his way to the edge of town shortly, inviting her to join him. He offered to look for her later, if need be, but it was not in her nature to be idle while leaving the work to others.
"Then when the times comes, I will join you.", she agreed. "By then, I would imagine we had idled long enough!"
Caius couldn't help but laugh at that. He had tried to maintain a professional, stoic demeanour. But her responses made him laugh. But it was a jolly, amused laugh. He liked her! She was straight to the point and was eager to get to the action. He could attest to and even respect that. And Caius himself was eager to get out there and get out to the field post-haste. He was of the same mind that while the infestation didn't sound like it would get terribly worse for a bit... It always could. And while it remained, travellers and caravans remained in danger. Caius would rather deal with that before it became a serious problem.
"I can drink to that" Caius remarked as he raised his glass before taking another swig. But it would be a little longer he supposed before Vordun would be ready. While he didn't know for sure when Vordun would find the infestation and return, he had sent Vordun out far too recently to be able to say that he would be back immediately. But he didn't want to underestimate Vordun either. It wouldn't be hard for Vordun to find them, the way that he was travelling. That was what Caius was counting on. When they finished their drinks would be plenty of time, and if Vordun did take a bit... Well, there was always time to talk to his new companion, he supposed.
"He'll know. He's smart" Caius spoke up then, addressing Freya's remarks about whether his companion would know what they were looking for or not. "He's smarter than I've ever given him credit for, that's for sure. He may be as stubborn as a bull, but I'm sure at the very least, he can spot an anomaly in the area when he sees one."
A curious question had struck him, and seeing as they were still polishing their drinks, he thought to ask it.
"If I might... I've never seen anyone quite like you before" He pointed out with a curious eye. "I've met races with less human-like visages before, but this is the first I've met someone of your species. Where are you from?" He inquired. "Information on any racial traits or abilities if any would be useful too actually, on the subject. Anything that might prove useful to us out in the field that I wouldn't know offhand" He added, his expression indicating that the idea had just struck him.
That was just him though. Caius could try all he wanted to be social, but as soon as something that could prove useful on the field came up, well... He couldn't help but ask. He constantly found himself laser focused on the task at hand.
As Caius began to laugh out loud, Freya couldn't help but wonder just what he had found so amusing. She cocked her head as he did so, seemingly agreeing with her. At least he was in good spirits, she observed, and so rather than question she decided to take another swig of her own drink. Perhaps later, she would ask, but right now she was far more concerned with making his acquaintance and getting this job done.
Reassuring her that his companion was smart enough to not get into unnecessary trouble, Freya could only hope that he was correct. She would not allow herself to be responsible if he got his butt kicked because he couldn't follow instructions, she supposed, but if her partner on this job trusted him, then perhaps she had good reason too also.
"Let us hope so, for your friends sake", she nodded as he continued. Stubborn as a bull hmm? Reminded her of Steiner, though she couldn't see him sneaking around looking for monsters for someone else to deal with. Not that he would be able to, with that heavy armour of his. Steiner...she wondered how he fared in the battle she had left behind. did he still stand? Did general Beatrix? These were not thoughts for the present time, she chastised herself.
"You seem to have great confidence in this man and his abilities. Have you been acquainted long?" she asked, attempting to make light conversation. That is, until the inevitable question came regarding her people and homeland. Yes, she had yet to see any of her fellow kind here, neither Burmecian or Cleyran. Not that there were too many of them left, she surmised, and although the fate of her home still weighed heavily on her heart, she would continue, perhaps even return one day to help rebuild.
"I am from Burmecia, a once proud realm now standing in ruin", she spoke calmly, taking another swig of her drink as she did so. "Someday, I hope to return and aid in it's reconstruction.", she added, knowing in her heart that there were enough of her people still out there to rebuild. Perhaps there were those who did not flee to Cleyra before it's own destruction, or had escaped in time.
"As for 'racial traits', I cannot be certain as to how much my people would differ from humans, save our outward appearance", she spoke while placing a hand to her chin thoughtfully. "I would presume that our sense are that little bit keener, although I have yet to see a human able to jump to quite the same height, though that may be my training as a Dragon Knight", she added.
Caius chuckled lightly when she brought up that he had great confidence in his friend, and her references to him after that. Oh, she had no idea. "We've known each other for our whole lives, pretty much" Caius responded, deciding to humor her question. With his companion, it was true in a literal sense. For Caius... Well, his life didn't really start until they came along, did it? So that statement rang as true as any in this case.
"But he'll get the job done. I know he will. He hasn't let me down before" He pointed out, taking a long swig at that. "His name is Vordun, by the way. You'll meet him soon. He's reliable, I have full confidence that he'll do just fine. His tracking skills are second to none. He'll find them a lot easier than even I could have, and I'd like to think I'm pretty decent at it" He remarked with a small laugh.
She was from a place called Burmecia? He'd never heard of it, and it wasn't on any known maps he'd seen within this world... Most likely, she was an off-worlder. He'd heard nothing of a Burmecia, never meet any Burmecians before her, and hadn't seen any records of them either... It was pretty clear to him. Her description of her capabilities too, was a dead giveaway.
"Dragoon" He spoke up. "That's what they call them in my world, I mean. Warriors that typically wield spears and can jump incredible heights for devastating attacks. The only known surviving one I had ever heard of from my world though, was a human. Her name was Aranea, tough lady she is. Bit of a hardass though. Used to be a commander for an army or something like that, but was mostly known for being one tough mercenary."
He tapped his glass a few times. "Well, I suppose that says you're formidable at least. We shouldn't have much trouble. Shall we get ready to get going then? He should be back soon" He inquired as he would finish off his mug in one last great glug.
"Then it seems we have little to fear!", Freya added as Caius continued vouching for his friend. It seemed as though they were indeed close, perhaps as much as she had once been to Fratley. Their relationship hadn't just been romantic, after all. Though far stronger than she could ever hope to be, he had always treated her as though they had been equals. They had shared many a time as friends and comrades, before things had become more serious between them. He had left to hone his skills further, and his absence had been conspicuous. There was a saying that absence made the heart grow fonder, and she had found it especially so. Fratley though...he had forgotten her entirely, a revelation that broke her heart into even smaller pieces than it had been upon seeing the destruction wrought upon her homeland. She too had left to search for him when he had not returned. If not, then it was likely that she would have died there, defending her people. A part of her wondered if that fate would have been more becoming, although it did meant that she was in a position to avenge her people.
"It must be wonderful to have someone worthy of bestowing such confidence in", she added thoughtfully. "I have those I could call comrades, though I know them little on a personal level", she explained. Zidane had been an acquaintance, and one not easily forgotten, though he had recently proved himself a friend too, rushing to her aid at the knew that Burmecia had been under attack. The young mage, Vivi, had also accompanied them, though she had feared for his future on the path to self discovery. She had barely known Captain Steiner of Alexandria, but he seemed to be a stalwart warrior. General Beatrix too, though she had been blinded by loyalty and had committed terrible crimes in the name of her queen and kingdom. Would she ever forgive her? She doubted it, but before her departure, they had at least been allies.
Realising that her mind was wandering, she returned her attention back to her newest comrade, as he spoke of Dragoon and how similar these people were in nature to the Dragon Knights of Burmecia. He spoke of a woman who apparently possessed prowess that she suspected would rival the general that had been on her mind moments ago.
"Yes, we are also known as Dragoon, though Dragon Knight is the more common reference", she explained. At least he knew of her skill set, whatever name they went with, and he assumed that she was formidable, at least.
"What of your skills?" She asked, wanting at least some idea of what to expect from him on the field.
