As consciousness returned, the sounds of birds chirping met the ears of the brunette. She simply listened for a moment as her mind woke up, a slight smile on her lips. She sighed, feeling pretty rested, her nose inhaling the sweet smell of flowers. That was a bit odd, she didn't remember having flowers in her room. Ooohh, maybe Squall had brought her some. Wait, no. That was unlikely. Not unless he could sneak them through the garden without getting caught. The image of Squall hiding behind corners looking right and left while hiding a bouquet under his jacket made her smile wider. Well, she figured she should probably get up and stretched. Her outstretched arms met with the feeling of soft floral against her skin. Huh?
Rinoa opened her eyes and looked around her. Laying down all she could see was sky and flowers to her sides. How did she get outside? The girl sat up to get a better view of her surroundings. She was in a field of flowers. By Edea's house? No... looking around, the building was not nearby. Rinoa had traveled all over the world on her adventure and she didn't really recognize this place. Was this the real world, or was it just fantasy? Rinoa felt a sinking feeling in her heart. How did she get here? Last she remembered she went to sleep in the room she had been given after spending some time with Squall. And no she was in a familiar, yet different flower field? Where was Squall? And the Garden? And her friends? There didn't seem to be anyone around. Rinoa began to feel a sense of dread. Was she alone now? As if to answer her question, there was a scuffle behind her and a small bark. She turned and found something familiar.
"Angelo!" she said, throwing her arms around the dog. Angelo barked again, happily. Rinoa let out a sigh of relief. At least she wasn't completely alone. Now if she could just find Squall. Feeling a little more relieved, Rinoa got to her feet to get a better look around. She noted she was fully dressed, which had not been the case when she had gone to bed. Everything from her boots to her arm warmers. Even her Pinwheel was on her arm. That was good, that meant she could defend herself if she was attacked by monsters. Angelo barked again and pointed her in a direction. Off in the distance... were those some kind of buildings? It looked kinda like a farm. Okay, maybe this was an area they had missed during their travels. They hadn't gone to any farms after all. Rinoa started walking in that direction.
"Okay, girl. I suppose that's as good a place as any to start." she said to her dog. Checking her Pinwheel to make sure it was active, she headed off for the building in the distance.
Not far away from where the young woman and her dog were awakening, a very strange individual was slowly approaching. Having only awakened in this strange new world a few hours ago themselves, Quina hadn't accomplished much other than wander aimlessly in a vain attempt to figure out where s/he was. The only thing that was becoming clear is that s/he wasn't on Gaia. Unless this was a strange, newly discovered part of Gaia. Somehow, not even Quina was naive enough to fully believe that. Of course, this just raised all kinds of questions.
Regardless, Quina hadn't made much headway into figuring out where s/he was or how she got here. They could remember traveling with their friends, but exactly what they were doing and where they were going was fuzzy at best. And it was in that moment what it finally registered; this whole time that s/he'd been here, his/her friends were nowhere to be seen. Although, despite wondering where they had gone off to, Quina wasn't too worried. This would hardly be the first time s/he's been separated from them, and fate always seemed to find ways to bring them back together.
So for now, Quina just wandered around, looking for any potential signs of life. It was then that s/he spotted them; Rinoa and her dog. Initially pleased simply to find some signs of life. But then s/he spotted the dog. It immediately occurred to Quina that s/he hadn't had anything to eat since they arrived here; an extremely rare occasion when food wasn't the main thing on his/her mind, as they were more occupied with trying to figure out where they were. And thus far, s/he hadn't run into any monsters to snack on, something else Quina was only just now realizing.
It actually seemed strange to think that s/he'd been wandering around for this long and hadn't been attacked by a monster or two. Of course, this may simply be a peaceful area. It was beyond unfathomable for there to actually be a world without monsters in it at all, so, now that s/he was thinking about it, Quina was leaning towards the latter; this just being a relatively safe area where a lot of monsters didn't gather. If s/he was being perfectly honest, it was actually a little unsettling. At least the random monster attacks made traveling more exciting. Plus s/he never had to worry about going hungry.
Either way, both the girl and her dog were an extremely welcome sight. The dog especially. Thus, Quina happily bounced toward them, as cheerful as could be. Once s/he had their attention (which likely wouldn't be difficult, given how bizarre Quina looked), s/he presented Rinoa with an extremely blunt question.
"That thing look tasty! I can eat?" Needless to say, subtlety was not one of Quina's strong suits.
Caius had kept himself busy as of late. Not only was he reporting to the Dragonblades, but constantly checking in with the Chosen King Noctis as well, in regards to his activities and if any of them had seen their mutual acquaintance. They had pinpointed that he'd last been to Provo, due to the plague that had spread there, one that definitely resembled the Starscourge. Something that gave Caius bad memories. If he could, he would avoid Provo best he could, but he also knew that he couldn't just ignore this forever. Eventually, he would have to step into the city if he was to report to the King. He was hesitant, but... It needed to be done, and it needed to happen sooner or later.
Caius and Vordun had landed at some point to give Vordun some time to rest his wings. They were still learning how to ride together, and Caius wanted to be sure that Vordun learned at his own pace. He didn't expect them to mesh perfectly on the matter of riding for some time, and he knew that while Vordun had mastered flying on his own, working together in that aspect would be awhile. He was in no rush. It would come, with time. But there was no merit in trying to push him too hard unnecessarily. Caius wasn't on a job right now, he was just heading to Provo in order to check in, since... Well... As stated, it needed to happen. They had found themselves in an open field and Caius figured they could walk briskly here. Catch their breath and see the sights from the ground for a little while. He would probably let Vordun go hunt while he was in Provo, but he wasn't ready to leave the dragon's side yet either, so he didn't care if they took their time. The update could wait.
It was there he heard voices. First someone calling out, and the barking of a dog which drew his attention to a young woman. And boy, did that woman look familiar. Wasn't that the village girl that had nearly been skewered by Tonberries? No... No, he didn't think that was. While similar, and his head got foggy thinking about it... Something told him they were not the same.
But then something else entirely began moving toward her. While he didn't quite break into a run just yet, Caius began to quicken his step toward them in hopes of getting into earshot, as well as seeing if the girl would be able to defend herself if it attacked. It looked like a monster, though it wasn't one Caius had seen before. But the encounter with the spectre in the temple had taught Caius to be cautious and not shoot first before asking questions. With Vordun moving softly near him, they would eventually move into earshot...
... In time to hear the monster ask the woman if they could eat her dog. Something that made him quirk a row. He stopped, and Vordun stopped behind him. He didn't make a move just yet. Just decided to let this play out.
Wherever she was, Rinoa had to admit she wasn't minding it at the moment. If she couldn't figure out her location and where Squall and the others were she would definitely start to panic, but that was for later. Right now, she had to admit the place was rather pretty. She enjoyed a nice view, one she could just relax and stare at. Never grow bored, just... serene. Hmm, maybe she had teleported herself because she craved a little relaxation. Rinoa didn't really fully understand how her sorceress powers worked so it was possible, wasn't it? She subconsciously wanted to go somewhere pretty and suddenly she was there? Well, she had experienced weirder things in her young life. And if that was the case, at least she should be able to easily get back. In theory.
Her pleasant walk with her dog was suddenly interrupted as something headed toward them in a rather excited manner. Rinoa blinked at the creature bounding for them. Was it a monster? It didn't look like one she had seen before, and it didn't look quite like any monster at all. But it wasn't exactly human either, was it? Rinoa stopped and placed her right hand on her left arm, just above her Pinwheel. Ready just in case. Angelo read the movement easily and circled back, now standing just by her left leg and watching carefully in case a fight broke out and she had to protect Rinoa. The creature stopped before them and, surprisingly enough, spoke. Rinoa just blanked for a moment. Whether she was more surprised that it was speaking or that it was asking if it could eat Angelo had surprised her more was unknown. But she definitely didn't know how to take that at first.
"Um... Dogs are friends, not food." she finally replied. It wanted to eat Angelo, which seemed monster like, but monsters didn't usually ask first. Angelo let out a warning bark to the creature, "Yeah, if you try to bite her, she'll bite you back." Rinoa warned. This thing was still an oddity and Rinoa was remaining cautious. But she was also curious because it spoke. Hey, maybe it was a GF? Wouldn't that be funny, if not a little odd. Probably knew the devour ability, if that was the case.
Quina didn't look at all intimidated by the dog's barking; monsters always tried to chase him/her away in a similar fashion pretty much all the time, and it's never been all that effective before. That said, s/he was visibly disappointed by what Rinoa said, letting out a mildly annoyed sigh but appearing to get over it relatively quickly. "Oh...well if it friend, then I no eat. But I still hungry though. Haven't had anything to eat since wake up in strange place. No find any monsters either."
Initially deciding to give it a rest so Rinoa would be able to get a word in, Quina was quick to add one last thing "Oh right! I called Quina; member of Qu Tribe. Was traveling with friends but somehow end up here. Strange world...definitely not world I from. No smell right." The clearer it become that this wasn't Gaia, the more worried Quina started to become. Were Qu's Marshes in this strange world? Or anything similar to them? Did Qus even live here? Did frogs exist in this strange world? For once, Quina was starting to feel anxious, though it didn't show.
However, something else caught his/her attention. Not far away, Quina noticed a man...and a dragon of some kind. The dog was one thing, but surely, this dragon wasn't this man's "friend", right? Quick to run up to Caius, and doing so suddenly, thus undoubtedly leaving Rinoa very confused, Quina calls out to him. "I hungry! Is that dragon friend? Or I can eat?" Once again, Quina had the subtlety of a rampaging Behemoth, though at least s/he was polite enough to ask before devouring everyone's pets/partners.
The young lady refused the request of the monster to eat her dog, and the dog began barking at them in turn. To Caius' relative surprise, the creature backed down, he could hear an introduction in their rather loud voice... And then Caius suddenly realized that the creature was barreling toward he and Vordun full speed. Caius didn't draw his blade just yet, he waited to see what the creature would do first. But the creature would call to him, proclaiming they were hungry and that they wanted to eat Vordun. Even asking his permission.
Caius stared at them a moment, blinking a few times at the audacity of how quick they moved from one person to another asking for creature food handouts. Caius took a deep breath to compose himself before looking to the large creature beside him.
"I dunno Vordun, can they?"
Seeming to understand the question being asked, the dragon would open his jaws...
The loud and ferocious roar that sounded right in front of Quina's face could have probably rocketed the average man back, and even Caius' coat began to flap in the wind just from being nearby. As the roar ended, Caius casually padded his jacket down.
"That sounds like a no to me" Caius admitted, shrugging casually. "But we were about to stop for dinner. Why don't you and the girl join us?" He offered with a gentle smile. The creature didn't seem dangerous, just... Hungry. He poked his head out around Quina and waved Rinoa over casually.
"I do see a source for firewood nearby, so I can probably have a fire going relatively quick. If you're interested in joining us, you're free to help us set up if you want. Have you ever tried cup noodles?" He asked then, keeping his voice loud enough for the girl to hear so she knew what he was talking about.
"I'm glad that's cleared up." Rinoa replied with a little smile. So this creature wasn't a monster? Well, that was a relief, as was it agreeing not to try to eat Angelo. Rinoa let out a little sigh. It was certainly something different as far as she knew though. She'd never even hear of a creature like this. The closest would be the Shumi, but they were still quite different. It was amazing the wonders you could run into while wandering around. Then it's next words caused some confusion. Not it's world? Was it an alien? Rinoa remembered encountering an alien once. It stole relics, then fought them in it's little ship. After crashing it asked for Elixirs. The thing was so cute Rinoa just had to. It gave them a card of itself in return, which was a little weird. But it's name was Pupu and it was adorable, so it didn't matter. This guy was less adorable, but still an alien, perhaps?
"I'm Rinoa, and this is Angelo." she replied. Then it suddenly ran off yelling and startled Rinoa a bit. She looked around where it was heading and saw a man in standing there that she had missed before because, well she had been a bit distracted by something wanting to eat the only friend she had left at the moment. She walked over after it, shaking her head as it now asked the man to eat the dragon looking thing that was with him. Persistent, wasn't he? She? ...whichever. Unfortunately, Rinoa had no food to share. At least, except dog biscuits she had in her pocket. But those were for Angelo when she was helpful. The man asked the dragon if it was alright, and then the dragon let out a huge roar. Rinoa covered her ears and Angelo's ears went flat on her head. Yeesh, that thing had some lungs on it. Then the man offered them some food.
"Sure!" Rinoa replied with a grin, bouncing on the spot slightly. She wasn't dog or dragon eating hungry, but she could certainly go for some food, "I have. I used to live off of food like that, so it's fine with me." she said. Cheap food was a must when you lived on the run as part of a resistance group. And she was certainly not picky at the offer of free food. Though she'd let Angelo give it a sniff before she actually ate it, just in case. He seemed nice enough though, and more importantly, he seemed to know where he was.
"Could you answer a question first though? This might sound weird, but... where are we, exactly?" Rinoa asked.
Admittedly, the dragon's loud roar was enough to give Quina a pause, even if only briefly. Otherwise, s/he gave the same disappointed-but-understanding response to not getting to eat Vordun as s/he did at not getting to eat Angelo. S/he might be compulsive and have next to no impulse control when it came to food, but not even Quina would be so heartless as to take a beloved friend/ally away from someone, no matter how delicious said friend/ally looked. Usually, s/he was able to find more than enough of some other food to completely forget about it.
Though in this instance,it was proving to be easier said than done. Though s/he was still choosing to believe that this must just be an unusually peaceful area where they don't gather, it was both baffling and a little annoying that Quina hadn't run into any just yet. And s/he absolutely refused to believe that this was a world that didn't have them; especially now that she'd seen both Angelo (who technically wasn't a monster in Rinoa's world but it's not like Quina had any way of knowing that), and Vordun.
That aside, Quina perked up at the offer of food by the blonde man. He was going to offer them food? Yes, please! Though, while she was more than willing to help him set up camp, s/he was visibly confused when he revealed just what he was offering. More so when Rinoa confirmed she'd had it as well. "Cup...noodle? I never heard of that before. Is it yummy?" Of course, one look at Quina probably made it very abundant that s/he wasn't from a world that was anything like theirs; it certainly wasn't advanced enough for something like instant noodles to be a thing.
Then, when Rinoa asked the question, Quina nodded in agreement. "Me too! I also have no idea where I am. Everything about this place feel strange, like it completely different world. Wouldn't be first time, except no idea how I got here in first place."
"Tell you what" He spoke up with a small smile. "Once we get the fire going and the noodles are on, we'll have time to discuss it while they cook. That cool?"
After some time, a fire had been made and Caius had hung several cups of cup noodles on them, prepared with what he still had of Behemoth meat from their last kill some time ago. Behemoth meat was, as he had always been told, the ultimate ingredient for the best cup noodles. Once they were situated, Caius sat down and leaned back against Vordun, who had curled up behind him.
"So this might come as a shock to you lot, but our tonguy friend here isn't exactly off the mark" He admitted, motioning to Quina to indicate he was looking for a name. "You quite literally are in another world."
Letting that sink in for a moment, Caius gave them that bit of time he knew people usually needed before he continued.
"I don't know how this world, Zephon, was created. I know that time here appears to be... Strange. I had originally thought I'd been here for several years, but by the time I went to Sonora, which is more technologically advanced, and saw dates for myself... It turns out I've only been here for about a year. And it was about a year ago, apparently, that people from other worlds started being plucked out of nowhere and brought here, myself included. And people have continued to be dropped here. And will likely continue to be for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, there is no known way to get back. Not that it hasn't probably happened, people I've gotten to know here have just... Disappeared as quickly as they were brought here. The weirdest thing is while I have a vague notion of their existence and meeting them, the ones that disappeared I have a very hard time recalling the specifics when it comes to them. What I do know is that aside from this phenomenon... There is no way back. I've been here since the first wave of people started blipping in. I had to start my life over again, more or less. Not that it's been all bad. People from my world have even shown up, including the liege that I once served... Though strangely, they don't recognize me."
Rinoa was surprised that the strange one also had no idea where s/he was. How many people (or creatures?) were being teleported about to random areas? Or maybe this area was specifically some kind of focal point for being being teleported? Weird stuff. Regardless, the man asked if they could settle in before answering her question, which suggested a bigger answer than Rinoa had anticipated. At least he gave the impression that he knew something about why they were here suddenly, which was nice. Now she was definitely curious.
"Sure, works for me." Rinoa replied with a shrug. She let the man go about his work and waited. sitting on the ground with her duster as a blanket. Angelo had found a stick somewhere and Rinoa was tossing it around for her to fetch as a means to pass the time while he focused and she figured prepare whatever it was he was going to say to them. Once everything was going, the man sat back against his dragon friend and began. What he said, however, was definitely a far bigger answer than she was a few miles from Timber or something. She was in a completely different world? People were vanishing from their own worlds and being dropped into this one? This went far beyond crazy Sorceress stuff. This man had been displaced from his world and he didn't seem like a Sorcerer, nor did the other one. So why her then? And now she was stuck here with no way back to her friends? To Squall?. Rinoa pulled her legs against herself buried her face between her knees.
She was alone. And even if her friends happened to be pulled here too, they might not even remember her. Rinoa wasn't sure which might be worse. If she ran into Squall and he didn't know who she was... But she also might never see him again. She unfolded herself again and reached for her necklace. Squall's ring was still right there on the chain. Zell hadn't gotten around to making hers yet. She gripped it in her hand against her heart, hoping she would be able to see him again. Angelo sensed her sadness and nuzzled at her arm with a little whine in an attempt to comfort. Rinoa was grateful she still had her faithful dog, at the very least and gave the animal a small smile and a scratch behind her ears.
