[attr="class","rem4"]Notes: first mission' in the new world! Yay?
She’d picked up a notice about fending off something called a ‘Chocobo Eater’, rumored to be the enemy of the giant, fluffy, bipedal birds the world over. While she hadn’t encountered any in the Dominion, there were equally nasty creatures that made a good snack out of the fluffy birds. She had Machina to thank for introducing her to the large, fluffy birds—but seeing as he wasn’t around here, she would have to do this alone.
Although she’d been looked at with some suspicion when it came to her taking this particular notice (was it because she was a girl? Who knew) she’d been informed that there was one other who would be going on the quest with her.
“If encountered, deal with accordingly. Save the chocobos, if any are left,” she muttered to herself; having written the details down on a piece of paper. Having gotten so used to receiving orders via their high-tech devices back on Orience, accepting ‘mission’ details in a much more old-fashioned manner threw her off for a good bit. Maybe this was how they did it in Lorica, before it had been flattened by the Militesi Empire? Or maybe this was how they did things in the Kingdom of Concordia? Who knew.
Either way, she’d managed to harvest enough phantoma—so she had enough of a reserve to be able to cast some support magic on her companion just in case they got into a troublesome situation.
Where were they, anyway?
She stood at the edge of the Reikin Woods, as it did say to meet up there.
Caius was not in the best state, to say the least. Recent events had completely broken his walls down and destroyed him at his core. A burden he tried to bear alone but knew deep down he wouldn't be able to. Luckily, Celes had been there to pick him when when he was down, and in the process the Dragonblades had been formed. But he was still going through a bit of a rough patch, and he knew that. No one had that level of damage done and just... Got over it. So it might take some work. Still, he'd slowly been opening up here and there. Sort of. But for now, it was time to get back to work.
Though he was told late that he would have a hanger on that had also taken this job. No matter, he supposed. Either way, it seemed some kind of “Eater” was making a Monday snack out of chocobos. He hadn’t ever seen many of them but they were endearing; the ones he had seen and so Caius had decided to ensure that this Eater thing was eradicated.
Upon arrival to the Reikin Woods, Caius would look around until he spotted a woman that matched the description given.
“Are you Rem?” He inquired. “Caius. It's best we get going if we're going to eat the Eater.”
He just wanted to get to work and not think about anything else for now.
[attr="class","rem4"]Notes:face it. roast me all you want, man. Go. I give you full permission!
She didn’t have to stand alone too long, enjoying the view—despite the fact that she would be facing an Eater in a few moments. Or at least what looked like an Eater, if it came from Orience.
There were species she’d managed to recognize, but at the same there were other monsters out there that looked like they were obviously from another time, from another part of reality.
Looking up at the sound of an obviously masculine voice, she was a little sad that it wasn’t Machina, or Ace—but it was someone who looked rather capable and could hold their own in a fight. At least, she was certain of that.
“Yes, that would be me,” she nodded quietly, looking up from her private musing. “I… I know that charging in as a White Mage, alone, without any backup is a bad idea, but… thank you for helping me,” she added a few moments later. After checking that her daggers were secured in their holsters, she then turned to look into the deeper part of the woods.
Right then and there a sudden flight of what she knew were birds shook the canopy—and then, a faint rumbling noise.
“I guess… that’s where we should go?” she supplied, hoping to be helpful. Why, oh why did she choose to specialize in white magic mostly was starting to bite her rather hard in the ass now. Why didn’t she try to be like Queen, who was a Spellblade? Or like Cinque, who knew enough to be a Red Mage (but still had a skew towards Black Magic)? Why, why did it have to be white?
…maybe it was because of the obvious choice that she came from Class Seventh.
Either way…
“Shall we?”
It wasn’t until she began walking that she’d forgotten to ask her companion his name…
She seemed rather disappointed for one reason or another, but it was no matter. Caius was what she got. If she didn't like it, then she could let him finish the job on his own and she could go find a knight in shining armuor somewhere else. Caius was on a job. And he would see the job through with or without her.
Either way, he shrugged his shoulders when she thanked him for his help. "Don't thank me yet" He responded calmly as he began to get moving. The sooner they finished this job, the better - as the less chocobos that this thing will have eaten by then. This was Rem either way, meaning they could get moving. So Caius would get moving. As the two moved through the thickets, he was making mental notes of where the voices were coming from. "Kwehs" and "Boks" and other noises were a sound indicator of where the things they were meant to be protecting were. Eventually, the two would walk into a clearing where a group of chocobo were grazing. Eating grass and looking for other food, and seeming to be enjoying the scenery undisturbed. Caius took a moment to appreciate the view of the chocobos. It hadn't been something he had seen, them out in the wild, since he was a child. He took a deep breath, scratching his head as he tried to push aside the thoughts of nostalgia but there they were.
"I haven't seen them out in the wild in clearings like this since I was a child" He admittedly calmly, bringing voice to his thoughts. He looked around then. If there were chocobos here... Then odds were that this "Eater" of Chocobos wasn't all that far behind. Meaning Caius and Rem would have to be on their guard.
Several minutes of quiet walking ensued—while she didn’t want to walk too far ahead, she at least made sure to match the pace that the other had established, and it didn’t take too long before they’d ended up at a clearing, where a family of Chocobos were grazing, pecking at the greens and eating them without a care in the world.
There were even tiny little Chicobos milling around them, waddling around on unsteady legs and sticking close to their parents. It wasn’t until she thought she felt the ground trembling that she looked in the distance.
Another cacophony of birds took off, disturbed from wherever they were sleeping.
“They don’t have them in Chocobo farms, where you come from?” she asked him quietly, watching the view uninterrupted for a few more moments, before another flock of birds were sent flying by that rumbling she could now visibly pick up on.
Even the herd of grazing bipedal avians stopped and looked in a certain direction. The little ones were more terrified, squawking up a storm as they scrambled to get to their parents’ safe touch.
This time the tremble was more pronounced, and she turned to look in his direction.
“Did you—did you feel that?” she asked him a few moments later, reaching for her daggers and mentally preparing herself to cast all the White Magic spells she knew on her partner. While she was one not to risk a Dia or two, well, she’d be more of backup in this instance…
"We used to" Caius answered. "Chocobo farms with big open fields to race on and decently sized pens to graze in. They were well taken care of, well fed, loved... People came in all the time to interact with the chocobos and pet them and race with them, and feed them different kinds of greens. It's one of the few childhood memories I still have" He admitted quietly. Caius was still working on opening up to people, but it was still something that he was hesitant to do. To give anything to anyone about him that they could use to their advantage. Though he supposed his childhood memory about chocobos wasn't all that harmful either.
"The Darkness took all of that away. There aren't chocobos in my world anymore, period."
The baby chocobos made his heart skip a beat. He'd never seen a chocochick before. As much as he wanted to pretend he was some sort of silent assassin, Caius had a soft spot for small animals. There was no way he was able to deny that. He didn't like to let it show, but as of late... That'd been harder and harder, and he wasn't able to stop his features from softening slightly.
Damnit Celes.
Caius took a deep breath as he watched the birds flee, being able to sense the tremors from the moment they had begun. He had already begun making a plan, since if the thing was as big as the tremors were indicating, he would be able to riddle them with bullets before they reached them... It would be a good place to test out the new weapons he had made. Caius would hold out his hands and a short sword would appear in them, with two sides. Pulling at them, they would transform into a set of gun-daggers, as a small, battle-junkying, adrenaline-infused smile would finally cross the mercenary's face.
A single, loud, ear-shattering roar announced the arrival of the Chocobo Eater—and to Rem, it looked absolutely nothing like the Eaters she’d seen on Orience!
“By the Vermillion Bird…” she mumbled to herself, backing away slightly as the large, bipedal creature emerged, jaws snapping hungrily and roaring again, hoping to stun-lock some of the Chocobos that hadn’t managed to flee yet. Flailing its overlarge arms, it then hissed, snapping and swinging the arms around—before making a beeline right for her companion!
“Stay still, now,” she muttered, concentrating as she then cast out Protect on her companion first, feeling the hum of the spell snap into place. That was followed up with Invisible, which she threw over them both—hoping that the Eater didn’t know any magic spells and continue to flail around like some mindless machine—and for the last part, added a quickly-recited Haste spell on him.
“Please be careful if it starts using magic attacks!” she called out, hoping he didn’t mind the Invisible status—which made them both seemingly ‘vanish’ from the sight of the Eater, who was now stomping forward and swinging its fists around in an attempt to grab a Chocobo for a snack.
The best thing she could do at this point was to keep an eye on how long the spells would hold, refreshing them if necessary. Should the Eater come too close, she’d be able to hit it with a Slow spell or two, seeing as how large and lumbering it was.
It was ugly as all sin. Not that most monsters weren't, but... This thing was just especially ugly. But perhaps he hadn't been expecting it to cease chasing chocobos and instead go for him. He had been preparing for it to dart after the chocobos, with so much stock in the "Chocobo Eater" going for food, he hadn't thought that it would view him as a threat immediately and attack before he had even made himself clear as a threat. But it appeared the monster was more intelligent than he had originally thought.
Rem would cast a Protect spell on Caius, one that Caius recognized from the battle at the haunted mansion. He also noted she'd casted a spell as to where he could no longer see the rest of his body. She said not to mind it. Perhaps he should have panicked a little. Most men would at the thought, considering he was about to enter combat. There would be no ability to rely on hand-eye coordination in this instance... Caius would need to completely rely on muscle memory here. Which was fine with him. His instincts had been honed to where this shouldn't be a problem. Cracking his neck, his lips twitched into a grin as he would then feel his movements begin to hasten. Another spell, no doubt. The girl would warn him that the monster - indicating she had seen it before - had magic attacks at it's disposal. Caius would nod his head - not that it did any good - and would charge the thing. Now that they were out of sight, it seemed that it had decided to go for the chocobos after all. Caius wasn't going to allow that as he would immediately hold up both blades, loading them using a bit of his own energy and promptly opening fire.
Caius opened full silos on the "Eater", raining it with rapid fire bullets from both gunblades in succession over and over and over again, trying to lure it back their way.
Okay, to be fair, the Eater was pissed that the human it was supposed to eat had suddenly vanished—before being suddenly pelted from so many directions by what appeared to be a bunch of floating weapons!
Letting out a surprised roar, the Eater then took a deep breath and began to swing its fists around wildly, in an attempt to catch where the hell the source of all the attacks were coming from.
Seeing that it didn’t hit anything, the Eater than decided to spit out a Blizzard spell, hoping that the point of impact would at least hit something—seeing as there were weapons obviously flailing around but where were the, well, ‘people’ who were wielding them?
Another Blizzard spell was spat out for good measure, this time aimed at where the scattered ‘gunfire’ was coming from.
Over where Rem stood, watching the battle from some distance behind Caius, she winced—as she recognized the spell, but it didn’t exactly fit the three different ways that her fellow Class Zero members would fire off their spells—while she did drabble in the field of the elemental magicks her focus was mostly on the healing and defensive ones, which explained why she came from Class Seventh first and foremost.
But enough of that.
“Oh, no,” she mumbled, biting her lip as the Blizzard spell had spread out from the point of first and second impact. If her companion was fast enough he’d be able to dodge it with the help of Haste, but if it was making its spell spread out its area of effect, then...
To say that the Eater didn't seem pleased with this new development was an understatement, and Caius was quite glad it couldn't see them in order to bear the brunt of that wrath. Caius would back up a bit so as to avoid the swinging fists - and when it didn't hit anything the creature would suddenly shoot a Blizzard spell instead. And then another for good measure. Realizing it was guessing where they were based off their weapons not being invisible, Caius would quickly one of his daggers, warping forward and narrowly avoiding the spell as he would hit the ground hard from the force of how quickly he'd needed to act. "Ow..." He muttered with a light groan as he would quickly make his way to his feet.
But the spell was spreading out, and that wasn't something that Caius had exactly expected. Taking off at a run, Haste helped but he had to get faster. But one problem was clear. The spreading of the spell was going to be a danger to the chocobos.
"Rem, we need to scare off the chocobos! Now!" Caius called out to her, as he would quickly identify where they were. "If you can keep it busy, I can probably use magic to send them packing! But I need that thing away from me and away from the birds until I can do so!"
With that, he would take off at a run toward the chocobos, first launching Fira toward the creature from where he started the sprint to get it off his trail before he started running. With that, he would take off toward the chocobos, hoping to try and frighten them into running... The problem was, they were invisible. And that meant that Caius couldn't physically do so. He would need to use magic.
