You’re terribly late. You were supposed to have met the caravan an hour and a half ago, but here you are now just showing up. Thankfully for you, word of your adventure has been swirling through Torensten. A cheeky woman of her early twenties waits near where the original caravan must have departed. She says she knows where you’re trying to go, and she’ll take you there for a price. You agree and climb in the back of her wagon, your seating bales of hay and the distinct smell of manure. She gathers a few more people and off you go. The sun has almost set as you leave Torensten. Shadows loom and watch your progression from the broken ruins and abandoned farms with only the woman’s lantern your oasis in the dark.
You try to push them from your mind. It’s the story, you tell yourself as you shiver. The reason you are abandoning your warm bed for a night of mystery and sleuthing. The rumors always start up around this time year: the anniversary of the incident at the Linister Manor. Fifteen years ago, a party was held for the Lady Linister’s birthday. Depending on who tells the story, all of Torensten had tried to get to the party as the Linister’s were known for the extravaganza of any event they held. Only about 50 people were granted invitations, and in their elegant attire left Torensten to the Linister’s estate early that evening. None returned. After a few days, the city of Torensten sent their police force to investigate, but when they arrived they only found traces of a party but not a soul. No trace of where they went.
Some say they all left. That the Linisters had taken them all into the surrounding forest where a monster got them. Others think something more sinister happened, that there was coverup the government wouldn’t talk about since the Linister’s had been such beneficiaries of the city. Some speculated a cult meeting gone wrong. Some that a murderer was invited among their midst and did a fine job of it. The city tried to keep it hush hush but people made their way out there every year to figure out themselves what happened, but nothing ever came from it. With the increasing dangers of the wild, the city council has decided to hire a group to investigate things once and for all with a promise that answers would be rewarded with a deed to the manor and all this could be finished with once and for all.
You won’t arrive at the manor for at least another hour. The growls of the monsters that roam the night cascade towards the little wagon. If only the wagon would go faster.
It’s night when you arrive. “Alright, out with ya,” the woman yells keeping a safe distance from the manor. “Good luck, now if you’re scared, I could be persuaded to take you back…..for a fee.” For those that stay you notice the front doors have been used but are locked tight. There’s no way you could force the door, it’s towering frame like a maw of a beast. Looking up all the windows are out of reach. If you were to look around back, there’s a single window just above a locked door just out of reach that stands open as if it knows where you want to be. Do you accept its invitation?
"Where's the big guy when you need him?" Prompto grumbled, albeit in a joking manner, in a desperate attempt to distract himself from the impending doom that was about to befall them; he was absolutely one-hundred percent sure of it. The story that was told to them had left nothing but a vestige of fear implanted in them. He had tried to get some shut-eye but the mere thought that they were walking into a ghost manor prevented him from doing so.
However, Prompto knew that there was no one else to blame for the predicament looming around the corner. The story's got him in shivers but Prompto is more convinced that he needs to go through such obstacles in order to find his friends and reunite with them. How could a whole bunch of people just disappear into thin air, without nothing left behind? Maybe if there was a strand of hair that coincidentally dropped just as they got sucked into wherever they were, this place wouldn't be the way it was right now.
At the four of them stood at the door, he knew one thing for sure: there was no turning back now.
Prompto took a moment to study the cyclopean structure before him. All the windows were far too high for them to climb up but something tells the blonde-haired gunner that there is a way to get in, even if the whole place seemed unwelcoming. He took another look around, jogging lightly in order to get rid of his nerves, and when he turned a corner to head to the back of the manor, he sees it. With a single wave and hushed yell, he beckons the rest to come over to where he stood.
"Looks like we can go through here. It's our only way in," he said, his words shaky. "It isn't very high up too." TAGGED // Terra BranfordCaius DragelionCeles Chere NOTES // There you go.

Use your own eyes and see for yourself whose side I'm on!
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Celes grit her teeth as the wagon gave a particularly rough jerk. Their route wasn’t exactly comfortable and it wasn’t exactly dignified. Celes sat with her knees drawn up to her chest crammed between two bales of a hay and sitting in something vaguely damp that stained her cape a dusty brown color. She kept her eyes straight ahead, jaw clenching harder with every jostle, rut, and tremor that the wagon gave.
Why, oh why had they been late?
Celes blamed Caius. Of course she’d come along when she’d heard that Terra was going on a dangerous mission, and she owed Caius a favor as well. Celes glanced at Terra every now and then but then looked away just as quickly. She’d always been a little awkward with Terra. They were both products of the empire, afterall, and not particularly like-minded ones at that. Terra had a certain energy to her that Celes had always lacked. She was kind-hearted and gentle and never had to work hard for affection. Celes on the other hand…
“Son of a-!” Celes nearly bit her own tongue in half as the wagon gave a particularly violent jerk and she was sent barreling shoulder first into one of the bales of hay. She winced as the straw scratched at her neck and cheek then pushed herself away, letting out a short breath before working to pick the miserable things out of her hair. She locked eyes with Caius the whole time.
He was the one who’d heard about this job. He was the one who’d taken an interest, and she could only assume that he was the reason they turned up over an hour late. Of course, Celes could only blame herself for going along with it or for being here at all so she knew better than to complain, but still…
The wagon slowed as they neared their destination -- a particularly ominous section of wood that seemed just as likely to disorient its victims as it was to devour them with monsters. Before them was an overgrown garden full of winding vines, nettles, and dead grass. Beyond that, a house loomed before the rising moon. The manor might have once been beautiful if not for the sagging siding, the filthy windows, and the distinct grayness of it all now that the paint had faded off. As it stood, the whole property screamed “danger,” “bad idea,” and “condemned.”
”Alright, out with ya!” The sudden shout almost made Celes jump as her fingers curled around the hilt of her sword. She let out a breath when she realized it was only their driver who was apparently quite done being helpful. ”Good luck! Now if you’re scared, I could be persuaded to take you back…..for a fee.”
”That won’t be necessary.” Celes couldn’t help the sour note as she rose unsteadily to her feet. The night wind bit at her exposed skin. Her armor was practical for battle with her thick pauldrons and steadying bracers, but it did little to protect against the elements and Celes couldn’t help a shiver. ”We didn’t come all this way for nothing.” She shot Caius a challenging look as though daring him to prove her wrong before stepping carefully out the wagon. The heels of her boots sunk into the damp earth.
The blonde boy was bounding ahead of them before she could steady herself. He was the only other one that had come so late, and they’d apparently both been after the same thing. He seemed like a well-meaning, if flighty kind and Celes didn’t particularly dislike him even for all of his nervous fidgeting. While Celes took in the front of the house (locked, naturally, though she wondered if she could break through it if she tried) she heard him call out to them from the back.
”Looks like we can go through here. It's our only way in. It isn't very high up too."
Celes blinked and followed him to see for herself. Sure enough, above a crumbling porch and over another sealed door was a small, square window that was already open. Celes stared at it for a moment before giving it an odd look.
”Did someone break it?” She gestured towards it sharply. ”Why would anyone have opened a window that tall? They’d need a ladder just to try!”
She let out a short breath. ”But I guess that’s not really the point.” Celes looked from the blonde boy (did his name start with a P?) to Caius and Terra. ”We’d be best off sending the lightest person to drop in from above to unlock the door. A float spell will help, but we’ll still need a boost. At the very least, one person will have to stay out here.”
The blonde boy seemed to be about her own height, and while Celes guessed that he weighed a tad more than she did, her heels and armor likely put her at a slight edge in both. Terra was far shorter than any of them and lightly built at that. Meanwhile, Caius towered over them all by a longshot. Celes nodded thoughtfully.
”Terra’s the obvious choice to send in first. Then…you.” She gestured at the blonde boy a little sheepishly. ”Sorry. I don’t remember your name. Then me. Then Caius...Well, you’re obviously the best to help us up.”
Celes turned to face them all decisively. ”Any objections?”

Caius had heard of some sort of job, regarding a suspicious house. It seemed, so too did Celes. The revelation that Celes and Not-Rydia knew one another was an interesting one, but Caius was cool with it. Terra had asked to go on this job as well, and that might explain why Celes had volunteered. Not that she had much choice. It was either go, or he left her behind until he came back. It was non-negotiable. Caius had taken a job and he would finish the job, with or without her company. And she could blame him for this all she wanted. She had chosen to come instead of staying in town.
As the wagon jerked roughly, Caius didn't budge. He'd remained stone-faced with his eyes closed, allowing his instincts to tell him all that he needed. That, and his senses, his smells, his feelings and touch. Sight would only provide a visage that would drive him to anxiety, he realized quickly. So Caius remained calm on the wagon ride there, not moving except to re-position himself here and there during some of the rougher bumps. He'd already fallen on top of Celes once, and the woman had not reacted well. Caius did not understand the nature of her response, but his hunter's instincts at least told him that allowing it to happen again would not be safe for him. As hardened as the Glaive was, he was still a bit slow in regards to learning social graces and customs. He'd missed too much. Been isolated too much.
As far as being late was concerned... Celes and Terra were to blame for that. It took them far too long to get ready, while Caius was the kind to show up early if he could. But he made concessions for his companions. Something he was not used to. It almost made him regret everything, the way he could almost feel Celes staring at him now. He finally opened his eyes, one lazy, low-lidded eye peeking out toward the other blonde. With that, he closed his eyes again and allowed himself to focus more on steeling himself for the job ahead.
Eventually, they arrived. A newcomer had come along with them, one he didn't recognize. And yet he felt like he'd seen him before, somewhere. In some way. Regardless, his thoughts were on the mission. This investigation of the manor and it's prior killings. The reward was interesting. A home to call his home... He'd never had a house to call his own before. But with so many people being picked up for this, how would they handle the deed? He didn't know how they expected to. Odds were, this was going to be a free job. Perhaps he could sell his side of the deed... He did need to cover the costs for this trip, after all.
The lot would be showed to the mansion, and then the host of this whole escapade would call out...
“Good luck, now if you’re scared, I could be persuaded to take you back…..for a fee.”
Prompto and Celes didn't say much. Celes said it was necessary and continued to stare at him like he had ten heads. Caius though, would open his eyes and sit up in the wagon.
And then he turned toward the woman as his gunblade materialized in his hand.
"You sound like you are under the impression that there is something in that manor that could place my companions at great risk, and decided to send us despite that. Something I do not appreciate" Caius spoke. His voice was calm. Too calm. But the way he looked into her eyes was another matter entirely. His eyes, as brown as they were, might as well have been an icy blue with how cold they were. His expression was sharp, and frigid and despite his calm exterior his expression was terrifying.
"It also sounds as though you are attempting to profit off the potential harm, or emotional scarring that befalls my companions" Caius would add as he would load the chamber on the gunblade, his own energy taking form as a bullet to load the round.
"Understand that if you attempt to place the girls, or even the spiky kid at risk for your own personal profit..." Caius trailed off as he would point the end of the blade, doubling as the barrel of the gun, at their head. His voice, as calm as it was, held a world of malice in it.
"... I will not hesitate to kill you."
And then he smiled. A jolly smile. And his tone shifted entirely as he lowered the gun.
"But I'm sure that won't be a problem!" Caius chirped cheerfully, the former Glaive pulling a complete 180. "We'll be back soon! Keep the horses ready just in case!" Caius would cheer as he hopped off the wagon to join his comrades. Caius was generally a very laid-back man, but something about putting people that he admittedly cared about at risk... It brought out a side of him that he had not seen in a long time.
Once they had found a way in, it seemed Celes and Prompto had begun working on a plan. Caius remained quiet for the time being, though shook his head when asked about any objections. "No" He responded calmly. "Proceed."
Things were already going wonderfully for Terra! On the way to the meeting sight she HAD to stop and inspect a few shiny rocks.....they looked like magicite, and she had to know if they were so she could keep them safe! It wasn't her fault they just turned out to be pieces of broken stained glass......or blue quartz.....or Mythril.....Those were beyond Terra's control right? And even further from her control, THE PLACE WAS BEYOND CREEPY! Everything looked so dark and foreboding that it almost made Terra want to back out just seeing the area they were supposed to meet their carriage. At least the driver had a friendly enough face! S-sure she had some blemishes on her face but she looked friendly enough and what was the saying....cute faces never lead you astray?
Terra boarded the carriage with Caius, and Celes, the latter of whom she had found knew Caius too, it was like fate wanted them all to come to this mansion! As the carriage ferried them from their starting point, Terra found the ride to be on the rough side, being jostled around using the Hay bales to keep herself somewhat rooted in place during the ride. Terra eyed their fourth passenger, something about him.....reminded her of a Chocobo! Was it the way he kept his hair? It looked like the crest feathers of a Chocobo, this guy whom she had nicknamed Chocobo guy seemed to be just as nervous and spooked as Terra herself.
By Terra's reckoning only minutes after night fell enveloping the area the carriage came to a stop, the driver urging them off her offer to allow them to leave if they got too scared for a small fee very tempting in the young Esper's mind. Was it too late to turn back? there was no shame in running away from a spooky mansion that.....had over fifty people disappear in a single night right? with a shaky breath and an audible gulp Terra stepped off of the Wagon only to hear Caius talking. Threatening the driver.
"You sound like you are under the impression that there is something in that manor that could place my companions at great risk, and decided to send us despite that. Something I do not appreciate" Terra sighed, from what she had figured out of Caius so far....he was protective of his friends, and hated putting them in harms way for any reason. "It also sounds as though you are attempting to profit off the potential harm, or emotional scarring that befalls my companions" Terra listened as Caius continued, Terra trying to will him to be quiet before he scared her off, she was their only reliable way to get ALL of them back to the relative safety of town! Granted Terra could lead them back to town herself...she would just have to go Esper and lead them from the sky.....but after the last time she went Esper being attacked and accused of being some monster called a Fal'cie by some pink haired girl named Serah, she was not keen on showing her Esper form.
Terra let out a squeak as she noticed Celes and Chocobo guy go to investigate the house chasing after them leaving Caius alone at the wagon to finish his threat alone. "H-hey Celes, Caius is threatening that poor girl, shouldn't we stop him before we worry about this.....really....really creepy h-house...?" Terra says seeming to get even more nervous the closer she got to the house, something about if setting every hair on her body on end wanting her to flee and run as far away as she could. Terra listened as the two talked, Celes....as always had a plan! Terra was not excited for this plan, she would be the one that has to go first into this creepy mansion. At least from appearances....Celes would be joining her inside she did NOT want to go inside alone.....or would it be Chocobo guy...? Terra sighed resigning herself to her fate praying it wouldn't lead to her doom. "O-okay.....I'll go in first....B-but one of you has to come with me! E-either you Celes or you Chocobo guy!" Terra said pointing between the two.
Terra enters first. Very visible is the door which Terra has fallen in front of, a big latch allowing for her to invite others in should she unlock it. The stench of the rotten meat and fruit would cause anyone to gag in the kitchen. The pots and pans that litter the few ovens and stoves are covered in dust across the kitchen length. There should be flies and maggots infesting the whole of it but there's a distinct lack of insects. The door that would enter into the dining room is broken and splintered and if pushed would not yield as though something on the other side were wedging it shut. On the counter should someone look, is a list of order for a group if individuals including their dietary restrictions divided by page on each participant. A note scrawled on each page about how much the chef would wish them to ---. Terra would hear a slow creak from a door she hasn't noticed yet. It's wooden and shows a set of stairs leading down into the darkness. A noise comes from below, it could be a sigh, a laugh, or just the air from something moving in this vacant space for so long.
"Firstly, it's Prompto and NOT Chocobo guy," Prompto announced to everyone else, realising he had forgotten to introduce himself earlier. All these people were familiar with each other but he wasn't, having just dropped into this world not too long ago. He still needed to find Noctis and the others and help them out but a part of him thought that he had been segregated from the rest for a simple reason: he just wasn't meant to be with them.
After all, he was just a mere pleb, only unharmed mostly due to the fact that he was friends with Noctis — they were afraid to offend royalty.
Now that they were close to a light source, Prompto kept his eye on the other man's clothes. They were familiar, like he had seen those uniquely designed garments before then it all came to him at one shot: it was the uniform of the Kingsglaive, the ones who fought alongside the Crownsguard but a good majority of them had stayed behind in Insomnia to protect the city — but when the four of them found out about that, it apparently was too late.
"Hey Caius, were... are you a part of the Kingslaive?" he asked, swallowing a gulp. If there was the chance that someone was alive, he could be trusted to bring him to Noctis — if he knew where they were. What were the chances of them surviving Insomnia if they had fought in the battle against The Empire?
The blonde-haired girl seemed a little bit intimidating. Not anywhere near Aranea's level but there was a difference: Aranea had been warmer towards him, due to the fact that they had met before, whereas he definitely hadn't run into this girl before — Celes, that what the green-haired girl called her – or even known her before his memories got messed up.
"I'll go with you. Let's just get this done and over with," he shuddered, prepping his own arms to toss the girl through the window if he had to. "This place is giving me the creeps!"
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Both Terra and the blonde boy (Prompto! That was his name!) were absolutely terrified. Celes let out a breath and glanced at Caius before looking back at them again. It seemed she’d be taking charge of this little expedition.
”We’ll send Terra first. She can handle herself.” She looked at Terra directly. ”If you can’t find an obvious way to open the door, let us know and we’ll send Prompto. If there’s not a key in the room, I’ll come after you too. There can’t be anything inside that you haven’t dealt with before.”
She glanced at Prompto and then at the house before giving him an almost nervous smile. ”Though I’ll give you that. It is creepy.” She suppressed a shudder before shaking her head. She wasn’t sure if it was the atmosphere of this place or just a chain reaction from the two beside her, but Celes couldn’t help a shiver just looking at the manor. It felt like she was being watched.
”Here. I’ll help.” Celes threaded her hands together and started a short magical chant before touching at Terra’s shoulder. The float spell left her lips and enveloped Terra until the girl was nearly weightless and hovering above the ground. ”Do you think you can handle the rest, Caius? I’ll give you a hand if you need it.”

Caius felt guilty. He could admit that, though never aloud. What if they'd just been joking? But this whole thing just seemed way too suspicious. But the second that Caius had stepped off the wagon, the driver had decided to "yeet" right out of there. Caius would stare back at where the horse-drawn cart had once been and how quickly they'd done so made things start to make sense.
"Annnnd it's pretty clear they intended to leave us here to begin with" Caius remarked, shaking his head in disdain. "Never had any intention of staying here any longer than they had to. Can't say I blame them, but I'm unfortunately not surprised either. Many folks in this land I've learned are just out for they and themselves."
They didn't even hesitate to leave, that told him that. Not that they hadn't been fishy to begin with. This whole thing was. So Caius would just let it go as he would join the girls and Chocobo Guy.
Celes would send Terra first, so while Celes was casting the spell, Chocobo Guy would happen to ask Caius if he was a Glaive. Curious, he would look back toward him, looking him up and down a moment before nodding his head.
"I was a member of the Kingsglaive at the time I was sent here, yes" Caius would admit. "But I have searched for over a year to find my way back, and have not done so. I've resigned to the fact that I need to make a new life here. You'd best do the same, wherever you might have come from."
Celes had cast the spell, and had asked Caius to help. Well, there was only one thing left to do.
"I got it" Caius responded as he would walk over and pick up Terra. "Hope you're ready, Not-Rydia."
And with that, Caius tossed Terra up toward the window. And with that, a happy bout of Terra Tossing was had.
The door opens but without protest. Affixed to be self closing, it creaks and cracks as though it would much rather stay shut than allow passage into the manor. Its dark with the only light coming through the dirty browned window affixed above the door and one above the sink. Nothing has changed since Terra dropped in. The air remains stagnant and thick like one was walking through a patch of fog. Everything remain dusty, unused, in disrepair. Once everyone is through the door its own weight shuts it behind them leaving them to their own devices. The door to the basement slightly ajar now bangs open reverberating against the wall with a loud and violent smack. The same strange sound from when Terra entered emits from the only passage out of the room down the narrow splintered stairs into the dark.
