It's not every day you stumble upon a huge, gorgeously hollowed cave system beneath the desert's surface. Rays of the sun shine through a few cracks to give enough light to let the deep pond of water sparkle and the rims around it that aren't weathered rock to grow tufts of green grass. Its beauty and miracle of location aren't the only wondrous things about the water. Drink from it, rest your tired soul in the Oasis, and in your dream you might recover a memory once lost..
Terra had heard rumors of an Oasis in the desert, one that some said had mysterious powers, one rumor said that drinking the waters would make one immortal, another said it would grant you a prowess with magic to rival the gods....The people who spread these rumors were merchants or travelers who had partaken in too much wine and ale. The more tales and rumors she heard the less and less Terra felt the Oasis existed.....until she heard a story that spoke to her, a story of an old man who went venturing into the dessert to find the Oasis his memory starting to fail. The story told of the old man finding the Oasis in the desert, he partook of it's cool soothing water and he miraculously recalled a memory of his past long forgotten! Something many thought was an impossibility, the only thing odd about this story....was that the old man couldn't recall how he had gotten to the Oasis, the only thing he would say when questioned is that the Oasis would only bring misfortune to those who drink it's water's before he would hobble away on a peg leg.
Something had driven Terra to set off into the desert alone, she carried only the provisions she felt she would need; two canteens and what she felt was a weeks worth of dried bread and meat. She set off into the dessert taking on her Esper form her magical presence washing out over the surrounding area, the sheer amount of magic she emitted with her transformation would send chills down the spines of anyone close by, the wave of magic could be felt from a great distance though the further away the more faint it would seem. With ease Terra's altered form would take easily to the skies the young woman heading towards the center of the dessert hoping to Find the fabled Oasis, if it truly could restore memory then perhaps she could finally remember everything she had forgotten, it could even reveal why she had been brought to this world!
Terra in her search spent four days and three nights searching for the fabled oasis, the sky was starting to show it's first tinges of orange as another morning came to a close. Terra Had just resolved herself to calling it a day and landing for the night to rest, It was a fools errand to travel in a strange land with dusk rapidly approaching....That was when Terra felt a strange stirring inside of her, her eyes drifted to her left and it felt to the young girl that she couldn't take her eyes off of that one direction, like something was drawing her it WANTED her to come. Terra looked towards the sun once more deeming she had enough daylight to fly for a little longer, this pulling sensation was the only one she had gotten since coming to this land of dunes and monsters it was her best lead yet and she felt she had to follow it.
Terra bolted in the direction she felt the pulling sensation from, she started to sense an ancient magic, a primal force. "I should be getting close.....Though the light is fading fast I don't want to stop for the night yet but i may have no other choice or I risk death by a creature of the night." Terra mused to herself as suddenly something inside of her told her that she had arrived at whatever was pulling her, drawing her to this one location. Terra looked down towards the ground startled to see an opening in the earth, the sensation seemed to be pulling towards the hole as if it was the next leg of her journey. Feeling she had no other choice Terra flew down into the hole coming to rest on solid earth once more disengaging her Esper form wobbling lightly as the strain of flying for so long hit her, bringing her last canteen of water to her lips she took a shallow drink of the water having learned to ration herself from....who...? Someone important....blond hair came to mind but no face came with it. "Well....I'm here now......what now....?" Terra questioned to no one in particular as she put her canteen back into it's place at her waist.

Peace is but a shadow of death, desperate to forget its painful past.
The desert heat swaddled him like a blanket made of feather down. Outside, the sun was scorching -- deadly even -- but in the shade of his oasis, the heat was a comforting weight. It played well with the cool blue reflected from the water and the sway of lush grass sprouting from its edges. If he closed his eyes, this place brimmed with nature in all of its sharpest extremes. It was nothing like home.
Kuja let out an indulgent sigh and let his hand rest on an open page of his notebook. He’d needed a moment to think, or rather, to open his mind from the narrow constraints of research. He didn’t know how long he’d confined himself to the depths of this place. Days maybe. A week at most living off of dried rations so he wouldn’t break his concentration by lighting a stove. The tunnels beneath the oasis were useful in their complexity and isolation, but the air quickly grew stale underground and the flickering of candlelight was maddening after days. It made his mind wander again back to those ashen halls where time stood still and death was a religion. Once his breath grew sallow and his fingernails bit sharp into the palms of his hands, he’d emerge again to his oasis to admire the heat and let his wrists trail across the water.
That was where he found himself now, lazily sprawled across the grass with his notes in one hand and a pen in the other. His work was too important to break from for even a moment, but a change of pace would keep him sane enough to focus. He knew that he was close. He’d already managed artificial life once before, after all. He just needed to account for new technology and the ever-mystifying properties of that forest’s “haunted” fog. It wouldn’t be long now. A few months at most, and then he’d hold the fate of nations in his hands.
Kuja didn’t know what it was that told him that he wasn’t alone. Perhaps it was the subtle sound of shifting air. Perhaps it was the bristling of his tail at foreign magic. Regardless, he knew it a second before he saw it -- a flash of lavender light and a humanoid form at the skylight of his oasis. For a moment, Kuja could only stare at it (’Where had it come from? How did it surpass his security? Was it flying?’) before his mind caught up and he was on his feet in an instant, hand outstretched and spells sparking on his fingertips. The walls around the oasis were nearly thirty feet high and blended in perfectly with the surrounding antlion tunnels. What was this thing and how had it known where to look?
None of that mattered. Not now when he could be facing down a friend, foe, or mindless monster. Still, that light echoed in the back of his eyes with the shadows of something familiar. His eyes narrowed into the sunlight as he sought to decipher it. Whatever it was, he wasn’t about to lower his guard.
”Can I help you?” His voice came shrewd and cool as he stared down the unknowable beast before him. Magic exuded from it in waves. ”I wasn’t expecting visitors, I’m afraid.”
Terra pursed her lips as she took a quick glance around the area that she had descended into, the lavander light and form dissipating in sight revealing a normal looking girl, by her appearance alone she could not be much older than atleast eighteen years, curious eyes took in everything of note she saw....Furniture.....a chair.....a wood burning stove? Terra frowned, was she intruding in someone's home? She had no idea that anyone could live out in the middle of the dessert let alone avoid detection. Terra let out a sharp huff as she felt the same magic that had pulled her to this place....though it was more intense then it had been only mere moments ago, the feeling of the ancient magic calling her had distracted her from the other presence in the room....another gifted mage like herself.
Terra let out a startled yelp once she heard a voice speak to her, Terra felt as if she would die of fright, that her heart would beat it's way out of her chest with how fast it took to beating after her scare. Terra stiffly turned towards the source of the voice, Terra pursed her lips once more taking in the mans.....odd attire and seemingly calm facade, though she had a feeling that he was just as shaken as she was.
"M-my apologies! I d-didn't mean to intrude i promise! I was looking for an oasis and i felt an intense magic coming form this place! I didn't know anyone lived here, I-if my presence is unwelcome I-i'll leave!" Terra said her voice in a near panic having noticed that by all rights she was trespassing in someone's home, an unwelcome guest. Terra tried to disarm the man with a nervous smile, her intentions were good, she truly hadn't meant to bother anyone or scare them out of their skin. "P-please there's no reason for us to get violent, I-i'll explain everything i know to you if you lower your hand and dispel your spells, I-i won't attack you. O-on my honor!" Terra would squeak out holding her arms outwards to show that she had no intentions of trying to harm the man, that she was a woman of her word, she wanted only a chance to explain herself and a chance to learn if it was his magic that called to her or if it was something else.
Terra took a tentative step forward lowering herself to sit on her knees, though in that single step forward the magic surrounding the pair would hum to life seeming to be....reacting to something causing Terra to visibly shudder. "P-please sit down M-my name is Terra." Terra would start by introducing herself her fear and nervousness clear in her voice as she tried to use words to disarm her opponent in a similar way to....Who...? Grey hair......scarred face.....the name was on the tip of her tongue yet just out of reach, this caused Terra some mental frustration as yet another memory slipped from her grasp just as easily as it had come.
Terra would take a shaky breath in an attempt to calm herself only partially succeeding in doing so. "S-so as i was...saying i was looking for an Oasis, t-the stories say that an old man drank of it's waters and recalled several memories of his life even as his mind failed him. A-and when i set out on my own to find t-the fabled oasis, I searched for several days before i found this place!" Terra would say sheepishly feeling a small amount of shame to admit that she had been drawn here so easily. "I-if you could share any i-information about the fabled Oasis i would really appreciate it!" Terra would say bowing her head respectfully hoping it would not be the one action to set the man off and cause him to attack her, Terra was in no way defenseless being a gifted mage in her own right but she felt a strong desire to solve this with words and not spells fists or blades.
It became quickly apparent that if nothing else, the thing before him was not a mindless beast. No, in fact, as the violet light faded like an afterglow from the creature’s skin, he saw it transform back towards its true nature -- a rather delicate looking girl. Kuja frowned at the waning magic before him. A trance. It could be nothing else.
The girl was like a stained glass window that shimmered in the sunlight but shattered under the slightest force of will. For a moment, he could only stare in awe of her. She wore a series of flower-adorned silks in red, white, and lavender. Scarves and bangles wrapped around her hips and tussled about her hair, pulled back in careless ringlets. She carried herself with a submissive stance, tottering in golden heels, and despite the sword at her side, she projected vulnerability above all else.
In a glance, she wasn’t so different from Kuja, really. They both carried with them a sense of hidden power that sparked at the edges of raised fingertips. They both adorned themselves in gold, violet, and glittering rouges. People thought him fragile. They thought him weak because lesser minds couldn’t associate beauty with strength. But Kuja’s eyes alone were different. His were sharp and focused. Hers -- oblivious and glassy. Kuja knew a victim when he saw one, looks be damned, but beauty was something to be admired -- and hers was as delicate as rose petals.
She pursed her lips nervously as she turned to face him, eyes darting towards her surroundings before meeting his again. ”M-my apologies! I d-didn't mean to intrude I promise!” she said in little more than a squeak. ”I was looking for an oasis, and I felt an intense magic coming from this place! I didn't know anyone lived here. I-if my presence is unwelcome I-I'll leave!"
It was the stutter that gave him pause. He couldn’t imagine feeling such panic over intruding on another’s space that he’d lose words over it. He supposed it was a fear of conflict over anything else, or perhaps a fear of overstepping her bounds. Either way, Kuja could give it nothing but disdain.
She begged him not to turn the situation violent. She opened her arms to display just how nonthreatening she was. And all the while, Kuja could only watch her -- half scathing and half taken aback by the spontaneity of it all. And he’d just wanted a break to read up on his notes…
For a moment, it seemed that she was actually kneeling before him to beg his forgiveness, but after a brief pause, she clarified, ”P-please sit down. M-my name is Terra.”
Terra.
Kuja’s eyes narrowed at that familiar name. Was this some kind of cosmic joke? No. He didn’t believe in such things. It was coincidence, pure and simple, but it was a dangerous one that left a sour taste in his mouth. Of all the names she could have spouted for him, why did it have to be that one?
And why did he feel as though he’d thought all this before? The sense of deja vu was nauseating.
Kuja didn’t sit. He didn’t kneel. He didn’t so much as change his stance. He did shake the magic from his fingertips, however, and cross his arms loosely over his chest. She hadn’t finished speaking.
The girl took a breath to calm herself. It didn’t work. ”S-so as I was saying, I was looking for an Oasis. T-the stories say that an old man drank of it's waters and recalled several memories of his life even as his mind failed him. A-and when I set out on my own to find t-the fabled oasis, I searched for several days before I found this place!" She looked at him as though she expected an answer, but he could only raise an eyebrow as she continued. ”I-if you could share any i-information about the fabled Oasis, I would really appreciate it!” she blurted out before bowing her head submissively. Kuja breathed slowly. Such displays of weakness always sent the magic in his fingertips sparking for blood. But no. That wouldn’t do. He’d already been far too unapproachable as it was.
This girl had power. As dim-witted as she might appear, there was use in that. Kuja threw his hair over his shoulder, eyes pensive, as he considered the ceiling.
”The oasis…?” he repeated slowly. ”I’ve certainly noticed some magical properties, but hardly anything worthy of note. I believe you’ve been mislead.” An easy feat, he imagined. He doubted it would take much more than a few hopeful words to lead this girl astray.
”As for myself, you may call me Kuja.” He offered her a sly smile and slid into a bow he’d perfected in the high courts of Alexandria. The queen had always relished in his grace. ”I’ve stationed myself here to research the planet’s more peculiar qualities. I sense that you’re not native to this place either, and from your pursuits into lost memories, I can assume you suffer amnesia. You’re not the first I’ve found who can claim the same, though I must say, you are the first to drop in on me from above.” He laughed softly behind the back of his hand before gesturing up to the cave’s skylight. ”These walls tower thirty feet high. But I suppose your magic cast you over the edge. What a peculiar magic it is too. Was that a trance?” He tilted his head in interest. ”I’ve hardly seen anything like it.”
Terra's lips pursed in thought as the man revealed his name, why did it sound so familiar.....even his face looked familiar...Was he a friend? Had she had a friend named Kuja?
Had she really been mislead? That nice elderly man wouldn't mislead her would he? He had been well known around town and seemed trustworthy enough. Terra shook the doubts from her mind, Very few things ever DREW her somewhere like this, the last time......when was the last time....? smoke....snow and ice....wooden bridges she could see the location but it's name escaped her, she was sure of it what she was looking for HAD to be here!
Terra couldn't believe how much about her Kuja already knew, she did have amnesia, It was also true she was not a natural denizen of this world! The one thing that confused her was when Kuja asked about a 'trance' was that some sort of meditation technique? could it help restore memory? could it help her understand how and why she had been brought here? "A....trance? What's that? I don't think it's a trance? Isn;t that where you are completely unaware of what you are doing? Because i am....mostly in control and aware of what i do." Terra would say seeming rather confused before looking up towards the roof of the cavern, it was pretty high up.....could this man not fly? That was a shame, flying was fun like when she was on that......what was it....? propellers.....silver hair.....fancy coat....yet another thing to escape the young girls grasp this day. "So you aren't from here either? I sense.....a strange magic inside of you. And your face looks familiar....I think i had a friend named Kuja....who looked like you!" Terra says her eyes brightening as she seemed to come to the conclusion that they had to have been friends at some point! Sh knew his name and his face looked so familiar it was the only logical choice!
"You say you are researching? Have you figured out why we were brought to this land? i don't remember a thing....But it would be really nice if you knew something!" Terra would say almost bursting with excitement that someone might know why people from other worlds were being brought ti this one, it was already strange enough when she had run into Cloud, a moody but good hearted guy in Terra's eyes. Terra could barely contain her excitement as she awaited any response.....any confirmation from Kuja that he could give her the answers she wanted, though ever present in her mind was the pull to find this source of magic.....which Terra concluded was NOT from Kuja, it was from something else in the room entirely. bubt what it was....Terra only had one guess as she glanced over towards the water in the oasis, it was the only thing that made sense to her, ice could be magic.....fire could be magic why not water?

Peace is but a shadow of death, desperate to forget its painful past.
The girl’s lips tightened at his name, and for the first time since he’d awoken here, Kuja felt a twinge of unease at his own identity. This world was so divorced from the one he’d known that it had been easy to forget that he was widely slandered as a war criminal on Gaian soil. Could it be that this girl had heard rumors of his name?
But no. As quickly as her unease had begun, it vanished into a fog of her own oblivious excitement. Kuja watched her more carefully than before in case she showed any further signs of dissent.
If there had been any, she was either very forgetful or a very good actress. No, she was more interested in trances and their meaning. She blathered on about how she was in control of herself and ‘wasn’t that where you didn’t know what you were doing?’ It was painful to listen to, but Kuja kept his expression as neutral as possible even as his fingers itched to strangle her.
Thankfully, the topic shifted quickly. ”So you aren't from here either?” she asked without any particular lead-in. ”I sense.....a strange magic inside of you. And your face looks familiar…” It was her turn to examine him a little too closely. Kuja flipped his hair behind one shoulder as he tried to swallow his discomfort. Somehow he found it unlikely that she’d seen anyone who looked remotely like him before.
”I think I had a friend named Kuja,” she said slowly before suddenly perking up. ”Who looked like you!"
”Pardon?” Kuja blinked at her without comprehension. A friend? Did she think they’d been friends? But she’d hardly touched on the abrupt and rather impossible subject before her mouth was racing off to something else entirely.
”You say you are researching? Have you figured out why we were brought to this land? I don't remember a thing, but it would be really nice if you knew something!”
Kuja stared at her. For what felt like ages, he stared without fully comprehending the flaming wreck of words that had spewed from her mouth like the clanking gasps of an airship. She’d known him. His name, his face, his magic. That’s why she’d tensed at his introduction, and that’s what she claimed now. Either she was insane or…
Or this was someone else he’d forgotten. His jaw clenched at the thought of it. How many more was he to meet from that impossible time of gods and endless battle? With every one, the concept still made as little sense as it had from the beginning, and with every one, he couldn’t deny the same maddening sense of deja vu. Kuja didn’t know this girl, but he’d remembered her name, hadn’t he? Terra. That name had been forced from his unwilling tongue before now, and he knew he’d had no choice but to swallow his own distaste more than once.
Terra. Nothing good ever came from that word.
”You say you knew me?” The words came slow. Careful. ”Terra. Yes. I think we’ve met before. Though how and when, I can’t say.” She’d claimed they’d been friends, but that was likely just the perception of a gullible pawn not yet thrown to the fire. Kuja knew himself well enough to guess that now was not the first time he would have tried to manipulate her with helpful charm. This could still work in his favor.
”I’ve learned quite a bit about the nature of this world in the time I’ve been studying it. If I were to tell you all of its secrets, I think we’d be standing here until nightfall.” He laughed a little, a light laugh like the chiming of bells. ”But if you claim that we were once friends, then I suppose I could take the time. It’s not often that familiar faces fly in from the ceiling, after all.” He offered her a mysterious smile before shaking his head again. ”Will this oasis do? I’m afraid I can’t offer you the accommodations befitting such a lovely woman. I’ve been forced to start from nothing as I’m sure you understand.”
He crossed his arms and looked up to consider the sky. The sun had long since passed the cave’s skylights, but he could still feel the pounding of its heat even now. ”That has been the way of it for all of us. Dozens merely snatched by some cosmic force and tossed haphazardly into a world none of us know. I haven’t met a soul who remembers how he got here, and very few come through with their life’s memory fully intact. I’d say that the vast majority bear some kind of incredible skill with magic or a blade, but beyond that, there have been few similarities between us.”
”Are you familiar at all with dimensional theory?” He glanced at the girl before shaking his head. ”I don’t expect you to be, but I think that this is more a matter of dimensions than simply worlds or planets. Of course, there’s nothing to say it couldn’t be both, but that’s a separate matter altogether.”
He turned to face her, head angled slightly as though in question. ”I believe this world to be somewhere in the middle. That there’s some force here pulling together those who’ve been lost in some way between spaces. Or that’s the short of it at least.”
He smiled at her. ”Did any of that make sense to you?”
