[attr="class","nabody"]As Yeul attempted to claw out more of the cold crystals from the ground, Caius had taken it upon himself to address the mercenaries. She listened to him question whether any had ever fought such a beast before, to which she looked up from her work to see their responses.
It was alarming how much their facial expressions gave them away. From a sudden, forced swallow to the wandering of eyes, Yeul could notice it in each of the men she studied. Expressions fueled by the unbridled swells of emotion – Yeul could not relate.
She had dislodged enough ice to deliver to the next merc by the time Caius had finished his lecture. He’s fought a dragon once before? She thought to herself as she handed the nearest man his share of ice, her eyes following Caius, Did my Caius fight a dragon? If he did, would he even need help?
As she returned to the increasing clusters, more mercenaries followed behind her. The Seeress got to her knees to struggle the ice off the frozen ground, those who followed her did as well, minus the struggle part. Soon, hisses of steam filled the swamp’s air. Unfortunately, it appeared the dragon was still content enough to stay asleep.
Yeul hummed a quiet “Hmm…” as she studied their attempts. They all appeared to be spread out enough, but their ice melted much quicker than Caius could produce it. “Perhaps we should be a little more forward…”
When the next clutch was ready, Yeul scooped it up with quite a bit of effort. The conglomeration was the heaviest she’d reaped so far, and her back bent painfully as she slowly walked to the front of the dragon. It continued to snore on, though the Seeress did note how its muscles on its iced side seemed to be involuntarily twitching.
Unable to lift the ice above her waist, Yeul had to settle with simple pushing the it up against the dragon’s nose. A low but audible growl sounded from the back of the giant lizard’s throat, and Yeul could feel both hope and dread enter her chest.
“Ah, Caius,” Yeul called out to her blonde acquaintance from her spot beside the dragon’s maw, “About what I wanted to question you about earlier…Apologies if it is a strange inquiry, but do you remember a beautiful field of endless flowers from your past? Well, specifically, from your past world, if you had one.”
It was very clear to Caius that none of these mercenaries had fought a dragon and lived. And seeing as none of them were dead, it was safe to assume that none of them had fought a dragon. Well, that certainly settled that. Now that their "help" was back in line, the group got back to work. But even then, they didn't appear to really be making much of a dent in this dragon's resolve to sleep in this exact spot.
"Might need to be. Pushing too hard though risks infuriating the beast. And I have no desire to strike it down, self defense or not" Caius answered honestly. This creature was being quite the bother. They didn't want to kill it, but if they managed to piss it off, then odds were they would have no choice. Caius wasn't a fan of the idea, he'd already killed one dragon he didn't want to. He didn't want to do it again if he didn't have to.
Caius found himself worried when Yeul brought the ice to the dragon's snout, but she seemed to be able to handle herself. Yeul would catch him off guard though, when she asked a question pertaining to a large field of flowers.
Caius stared at her a moment, blinking a few times in surprise and in confusion. "I do not" He would admit, admittedly a bit upset at the prospect he might have disappointed her somehow. "Most of what I remember about my world is a near-complete wasteland. I hadn't seen a field of flowers for years and years by the time I came here, but I don't recall ever being in one that could be described as endless" Caius added. "Why do you ask?"

[attr="class","nabody"]Her eyes gave away her disappointment.
They wavered their gaze from the mercenary’s as she blinked repeatedly. Yeul knew she should’ve expected as much, but still, the hope had been tangible.
“That Guardian I mentioned before,” she said, attempting to quell the heavy burden in her stomach by focusing on the other men’s’ efforts, “he has…disappeared on me. One moment by my side, the next lost-wandered astray after he told me to stay put within a crowd. I was injured, I couldn’t follow him. I trusted him to return, however…”
She let her sentence hang. This Caius could figure it out. Yes, Yeul thought, the muscles in her hands tightening momentarily, “This” Caius is not mine.
And with that, her stoic nature returned. “Forgive me for asking something so abruptly strange.” She apologized as she pressed the ice against the muzzle of the dragon. The Seeress watched as particles of ice drifted into its nostrils. “My memory has been unreliable for the past few weeks. It was just wishful thinking, really.”
A sudden tremor rattled through the ground, running right through the girl. She stumbled, falling onto the ice. A growl, deep, impressive and intense, resonated through her small body. As Yeul attempted to steady herself against the shifting dirt, she felt an unknown force grab hold of her heart. With internal dread, she looked up to be met with a single red eye.
Carefully, Yeul began to back up. She managed to avert her gaze from the giant’s, not wanting to accidentally challenge it. She slowly made her way back beside Caius as the dragon began to rise. It cast a great shadow over the surrounding area.
“Caius.” Yeul stated, calmly and quietly, “My Guardian was a traveling swordsman of commendable prowess. I can remember his armor-framed body in a field of flowers.”
The dragon cocked its head towards the merc and the girl. Its sizable eyes stared them down, and puffs of thick, onyx smoke rose from its nose. It opened its mouth, showing off its dirtied teeth and curled tongue.
“His name was also Caius.” Yeul told him, her voice unwavering in the presence of danger.
Caius couldn’t help but frown to match the disappointed expression of Yeul. Whatever he had said, he had disappointed and upset her. That wasn’t what he had wanted, far from what he had wanted. But he kept quiet and reserved, unsure of what to do or what to say. He had hurt her in some way, the mercenary could easily tell. But he didn’t know how to fix it. He didn’t know if he even could fix it. Whatever he had done, he had done her harm. And it wasn’t something that Caius was very happy about. What had he said that had done such harm? He wished he could take the words back, but he didn’t think there was a way to anymore. The damage had been done. He normally didn't feel things like this and he found himself confused for a bit, not knowing what to do with these feelings and emotions. Things he had tried to lock away, things he had tried to leave behind.
But there was nothing he could do. It seemed this guardian of hers had disappeared and she was clearly trying hard to find him without success. Though how she could have mistaken him for possibly being him, he wasn't sure. Though he had heard of people appearing in this world with amnesia... And her remarks about unreliable memory backed that up. They wouldn't have long to talk about it though, as the dragon would wake and rise, staring them down. It didn't seem all that happy to be roused from it's sleep, and honestly Caius couldn't blame it. Peering back toward the other mercenaries a moment to ensure they wouldn't do anything stupid, Caius considered his options a moment.
"I figured" He remarked calmly when Yeul would confirm his suspicions that her guardian was also named Caius. He found himself wanting to walk over and give her a hug, for one reason or another. Something else unusual for him. But for now, they had a dragon to deal with.
Caius would take a deep breath as he would pull something out of his pack. It was a scale-covered, sapphire colored egg, which made it very clear what was inside. Caius would walk over, and in a brazen move, press the egg to the noggin of the dragon should it be leaned down enough to do so. With that, he spoke calmly, but incredibly softly.
"I am taking care of it" He spoke to it in almost a whisper. "Please do not harm it."
He didn't know where this idea had come from, but perhaps this was Yeul's influence. She had implied it could be a gentle, intelligent creature that didn't deserve to be hurt by the brutes nearby. Caius hoped that perhaps that intelligence would show, if he showed himself that he meant them no harm and had every reason to not want to do so. He figured they'd recognize the scent of the egg, and hoped it might keep the creature calm. He didn't know if it could understand his speech, but at the least, his tone might convey his intentions.

[attr="class","nabody"]“I figured.” Caius replied, swift to change his focus on the giant before them.
Yeul watched as he reached into a pack at his side to bring forth what the Seeress first presumed a magical stone. However, she quickly came to realize that the grooves covering it were scales, not runes. Not a stone, an egg.
“Are you to feed it?” She inquired, though by the time her words had left her lips, Caius was already on his way towards the dragon. The Seeress stood in place, watching him from the not-so-safe distance.
The dragon, inquisitive, leaned down to meet the human. Caius towered over Yeul’s small frame, but up against a dragon? He appeared as small as her.
Yeul kept her arms at her sides, though her fists unconsciously clenched in silent anxiousness. She focused on Caius and the sleepy dragon, though she noticed movements from her peripheral. It seemed the mercenaries were all obviously uncomfortable as well. One, a skinny, bearded man gripping his ice chunk tight, lashed out toward the dragon’s scales to press the magically-conjured crystals against it.
“Stop.”
Yeul’s voice was as stoic and calm as previously, but she spoke as if she commanded hardened soldiers on a battlefield. She clicked her ‘t’ with force, and the ‘p’ had an edge to it even she had never roused before.
The mercenary was also taken aback. He stared at the short little girl, caked in mud and still dripping with sweat. Her hair, usually straight and refined, was frizzed and appeared darker in the heat of the swamp. When Yeul’s eyes locked with his, he saw what she could not.
Her green eyes, illuminated a lighter shade thanks to the surrounding ice, had a commanding presence to them. It wasn’t a presence seen in war-generals or revenge-driven berserkers though. No, far from it. Her command came from a place of love, of sustainability. She feared not these men of muscles and swords. No, the young Seeress of Paddra was not intimidated.
Growing up with an immortal, goddess-blessed Guardian tended to have that affect.
Of course, Yeul knew not of that. Her locked or lost memories withheld such information. Her assertiveness towards the rough-and-tumble was just a part of her, similar to her intense love for the beings that bloomed.
With that matter settled, Yeul watched as the dragon’s nostrils flared as it inhaled the scent of not just the egg, but Caius. Its breath was so strong, Yeul’s skirt and hair tugged away from her body and the nearby trees swayed forward.
Careful now, Caius. Yeul thought. You may not be the man I’m searching for, but you’re a good man. Pray the monster isn’t hungry.
Apparently, even the divine resided within the marshes of the world, for the dragon did not make a meal of Caius. Instead, it gently nudged the egg, almost ignoring the kind mercenary entirely.
Now, there’s the process of moving the beast. Yeul mused, sizing up the immense scale of the winged creature and their surroundings. If Caius can keep it calm, the mercs and their ice could encourage it to move down to the coast…
Caius duly noted that the mercenaries were at it again. Had they attempted to attack the dragon a second time, he would have killed them himself. They had intentionally sabotaged the mission repeatedly, and if he didn't kill them until the remainder ceased their attack, the dragon would kill all of them. That was all there was to it.
But no, he wasn't meant to feed it. Instead, the dragon would grow interested in the egg. It's hot breath threatened to blow him away, but he planted his feet and would weather the storm. If there was a way to get the dragon to move without harming it, then he would take it. He had already killed one of its kind and hadn't done so without regrets. He did not wish to do so again, especially when this particular one wasn't harming anybody. Just was in the way and needed to be moved. And who knows? It was potentially in charge of another clutch of eggs, just like the one that Caius was holding. And Caius wasn't eager in making another clutch of hatchlings without their parent again, no thank you.
Yeul would give the orders as to how to attempt to move the beast next. Nodding his head, Caius would slowly back up, just a little, attempting to direct the dragon to move toward him. He didn't know how much good the ice could do, but at the least he could try to direct it just a little toward where they needed it to go. He doubted he'd make much ground with how slow he was going so as to keep the dragon calm, but every little bit helped.
"I've been thinking of some names" Caius would continue to speak to the dragon, keeping his voice calm and gentle to continue to indicate his intentions and keep the dragon calm, even if he had no clue if it could understand him or even was listening to him. "I'm not sure if it will be a boy dragon or a girl dragon though. So I'm not sure where to start. I've been scouting out some good hunting places though. I don't know a whole lot about dragon care, I don't think anybody does. But I've been preparing best I can. I'm trying to stockpile meat as best I can for when the little guy hatches. I imagine I'm going to need it."
