"Still busy savin' the world, then?"

Mid leapt off the back of the chocobo carriage, flicking a coin at the driver. "Cheers, mate," she nodded, as she began to make her way into the town. "Keep the change and wotnot," she added. She wasn't really used to having a disposable income of her own, but it couldn't hurt to pay it forward a little, right? Besides, if she parted with a few more gil than she had rattling around in her purse, she might resist some of the temptations.
Provo, she had been told, was a market town. If she needed something, this was where she could get it. Usually, she'd have just asked Clive, but he seemed like he had enough on his mind, and besides, she was curious. Back in Kanver, in her world, she had contacts. Enough to build and crew an entire ship. She knew how to network and recruit people and more importantly, she knew what was available. But here? All bets were off. From what she had heard, all of Zephron operated on a scale of extreme inequality. In many ways, it confirmed what Mid had always feared. Sonora had technology that even Mid could only dream of. Things that were beyond even the technology of the Fallen. And what did they do with it?
They ruled. Sure, they seemed to keep to themselves, but they had created a nightmare city of advanced technology, a place no outsider was ever welcome. They had proven what Mid always feared. That with great power, came great corruption. You invent something too powerful, and the first thing that happens is the powerful will nick it and use it for their own ends.
But that also meant something Mid hadn't truly seen coming on her end. It meant the gloves were off. She had always been so frightened of creating some new horror to unleash upon the world, something that the Guilds or armies would take and use to reign terror, but here, it was too late. That cat was already out of the bag. And it had claws. She wasn't at the cutting edge anymore, threatening to break the world with an invention it wasn't ready for. Now she was playing catch up. And if the Dragonblades truly wanted to help people, she had to get them on an even footing.
And that meant working like she'd never worked before.
Besides, there was no way she was going to have the name of Telamon known as anything but cutting edge. Her Dad had invented things her world couldn't have imagined, and she'd done the same. She wasn't about to sit back and spend her time tinkering with model airships when the sky was already full of working models. She'd invent her own airship. And it wouldn't just be any airship. It would be the best airship Zephron had ever seen.
And she'd make sure it was only used for good.
But, to build that, she had to figure out the resources of this new world. And she'd need to see them herself. No point in sending Clive. He wouldn't know what he was looking for So she'd come to Provo herself. But before she did that, she had a letter to deliver to a clinic. She could hardly say no, although she had to admit, she did wonder if this was how Clive felt whenever she asked him to do something for her while he was somewhere...
Nah! When SHE asked, it was for a really good cause! Besides, she could deliver a letter. No problem.
She managed to find the clinic without too much difficulty, and let herself in. "'Ere, anybody about?"she called out. "Got a special delivery 'ere, all the way from Torensten,"she waved the letter about, before catching the back of a figure. "Ay, you there, can I leave this with you? I mean, you don't look like much of a 'Yuna'. Actually, with that hair cut, you look more like-" she paused as she moved around, catching view of his face.
And then she recognised him.
"Dion!?" She gasped, pausing for a moment, and then throwing her arms around him. She held him tightly for a moment, and then released him. "Everyone's been tellin' me you were dead!" she said, looking at him through a mixture of misty eyes and beaming smile. "I were dead worried!" she added."Me! A Telamon! Worried! 'bout a Prince of Sanbreque! You got any idea what that'd do to me street cred if it got out?" she teased, playful grin on her face.
"Come on then, out with it. 'Ow'd you survive? 'cause, I'm workin' on a couple of theories, an' if you're alive, we might be able to bring everybody back," she grinned. "Well, all the ones that matter. Some are definitely stayin' in their graves, if you take me meaning,"she added, meaning of course, Kupka and Benedikta and Barnabas...

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"
Engineering Prodigy
Mid couldn't help but sigh as she took off after Celes, trying to keep talking along the way. By the time they reached Clive, she had fallen behind a little, and was panting a bit as she came alongside Celes. She was an engineer; not a soldier, after all, and while she was well known for her whirlwind energy, endurance wasn't exactly one of her strongest points. She stopped, panting a little, and looked at the pair of them. "Would you two 'ang about an' slow down a bit? Some of us are wearin' leather trousers 'ere!" Mid's skin tight leather trousers looked great, and were sturdy enough to withstand plenty of dropped tools or spilled oil, but they were definitely not made for running. Especially when combined with her thigh high leather boots, which also weren't exactly extremely flexible. Or at least, that was her excuse for falling behind.
She took a deep breath, and reached up to brush a strand of hair out of her face. Luckily, her extremely long ponytail held most of it, but that much hair pulled back also did not help with the running. "Okay, look, not take sides or nowt, but you kinda DID say you were gonna put Torgul down," Mid pointed out to Celes. Yes she was now ranting about how nobody was going to hurt Clive's dog, which was definitely not what she had said before. "And YOU jus' got outta jail," she said turning on Clive. "Can you go FIVE MINUTES wit'out givin' Celes a reason to arrest you again? Or is that askin' too much?" she said, just to balance out her criticisms.
"Maybe you shoulda given 'im the pamphlet," Mid pointed out to Celes, since she was now dumping information onto Clive that he really had no way of knowing. She supposed that Celes seemed pretty stressed and exhausted, but she seemed to be assuming that Clive knew all the details of his incarceration and what came next without actually having it explained to him. She guessed that was where the pamphlets came in handy.
She DID however note her comment on monsters could come through too, and presumably had. And she saw the recognition in Clive's eyes too. But unlike Clive, she just took that as confirmation as to her theory. Clearly, whatever took them to this world wasn't locked by the traditional flow of time. As evidenced by Clive mentioning the difference of a week or so for her and him. Which if it was independent of time, it could take anyone from any point in their timeline. And, yes, Clive was panicking that that meant some of their enemies could be returned to life and come through to Zephron. But Mid was instead taking it as evidence that her theory was accurate, and she could learn a way to control it, and return Joshua, and even her father, to life.
Mid sighed, looking between them both. She didn't love that Celes brought her into it and told Clive to apologise to her, like she was some wayward child. She tried to figure out how to mediate between them. Her father would have been good at that. Okay, sure, he'd have probably just hit them both upside the head and told them to 'stop buggerin' about', but it'd have worked. That was a little outside Mid's area of expertise. Mighty tempting though. It was probably kinda hard to reach Clive's head though...
"Alright, listen you two, far be it for me to try tellin' either of you nowt, but 'ow 'bout this?" she suggested. "Torgal in't jus' a dog. 'E's an frost wolf. Smart. Sentient. Keepin' 'im locked up in't fair. I mean, what did 'e do but run after his friend? Then the guard lot tried to stick a sword in 'im 'cause they saw a big monster. In't 'is fault. But I get it. Clive in't exactly endearin' 'imself to the authorities, or to you. So 'ow's this? Release Torgal to me. I'll look after 'im. Me and 'im go way back anyways, and Clive can visit 'im whenever he wants then. An' if 'e does act up, I can guarantee you I can make somethin' that can keep an ice wolf locked up way more effectively than anythin' they got in this place," Mid added. "Once Clive proves 'e can be trusted, provided he does that an' don't piss everyone off on the continent, which I 'int sayin' ain't a possibility, by the way, 'e can have Torgal back. In the meantime, 'e knows Torgal is looked after and 'e can visit any time 'e wants," she suggested.
"Besides, I always wanted a dog. Dad always said no, ever since the 'ole incident with the engines I attached to 'is chocobo's legs to make it run faster, but I were only eleven, an' it seemed like a good idea at the time!" Mid explained. "And he i'nt wrong, plenty of people who weren't too friendly, if you take me drift, back in our world. 'course, most are dead now, but that don't mean nowt 'ere, does it, so best be prepared," she explained. And then she paused. "Least 'til I get this all worked out, an' then can put a stop to the ones we don't want, an' bring through the ones we do," she added cheerfully, still fairly certain that there had to be an explanation for what was happening, and that she would soon be able to unravel it. If her father could unravel the mystery of the crystals with no help, she was sure she could crack this! Finally, a chance to live up to the Telamon name, and prove that she could solve her own mystery, and help the world just like her Dad had, instead of just inventing tiny gadgets and thinking that would do.

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"

Mid just gave Clive her usual smirk when he mentioned that they had, in fact, been paid for various services in the Hideaway, and had practically run on donations. "Yeah, an' Celes 'ere takes donations an' payment too. Dragonblades ain't a charity, it's a business. You two are more alike than you realise,"Mid explained, before pausing. "Though, 'ey, did you know, Celes actually pays me. Dead serious. I invent stuff, I get paid. Never 'ad that before,"she said, her tone teasing, since Clive knew she had never asked for money. What would she have done with it anyway? She had her tuition sponsored, until she walked away, and after that, she had everything she needed in the Hideaway.
"You know it were your brother, right?" Mid asked, her tone half playful, but aware that Joshua wasn't around. "What asked Dion to come wiv us. I swear, you lot need to talk to each other more often," she said, and then she paused. Realising that both Joshua and Dion were dead, and that was insensitive. She paused. "....Sorry. It'll be alright, though. Like I told you. We're gonna get 'em both back. An' everyone else we lost too. If we can figure this out, sky's the limit, really. Could bring back me Dad! Might 'ave a bit of 'splainin' to do when we do, of course, but it's gotta be worth it,"Mid's eyes were lighting up with the possibilities again.
When he mentioned another God, Mid just smirked. "'o said it were a God?"she asked. "Could be anythin'. Could be magic. Or jus' science. The Fallen used to have all kinds of stuff we din't understand. 'O's to say it in't like that?"she suggested.
Mid couldn't help but wince as Celes began to explain about the other intruder, immediately realising who it was, and watching as Clive rushed off like, well, a little boy eager to reunite with his puppy. Which, she supposed was accurate. "Oh boy, you've done it now," she said to Celes with a sigh. "That'd be Torgul. Clive's dog. Two of 'em are inseparable. 'E might 'ave you all convinced with this broodin' dark stuff, but 'e's just a big puppy dog really,"Mid explained. And then she paused. "Well, I mean, I suppose Torgul is meant to be the puppy, but it din't 'xactly work out that way,"she grinned. "Anyway, point is, 'e's been mates with that dog since before I was born. You gonna put it down? It'll make what 'e tried to do to the crystal look like 'e was jus' playin' with a wooden sword," Mid warned. "Best let Torgul go. 'e won't do any 'arm. Best behaved dog this side o' Ash. Or that side o' Ash. Which I realise would mean more if you 'ad any idea where Ash was," Mid added after a moment.

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"

"Yeah, well weird that," Mid replied, grinning. "I mean, who would run a group that operates on its own and don't follow any of the governments around, while doin' their own thing and takin' nowt in return. Probably the same kinda person who'd end up recruitin' the literal prince of one of those kingdoms he was meant to be fightin' 'gainst. Can't imagine a fella like that, can you, Clive?" she asked, sarcasm dripping off of every word as she made her point clear.
He tried to defend his thought process in attacking the crystal, and she just gave Clive a sceptical look. "Right. You did, didja?" she asked sceptically. "Showed up in a whole new world, not a clue 'ow you got there, an' first thing you thought ta do was try an' kill God. Alone. Again?" she repeated. She sighed. The sort of sigh a little sister might give her older brother when she realised she had to be the responsible one. "Are we gonna hafta tie you down to stop you from makin' stupid decisions? 'cause, I'm pretty sure me Dad considered back in the day, and 'alf the Hideaway now, for that matter..." she said.
She heard Clive's sigh, and how he seemed to think she was being stupid. She sometimes got that reaction when she had a particularly 'out there' idea about something. But she usually proved them wrong in the end. "'ey! Don't give me that look!" she protested. "End of the day, it's simple science, in't it? I mean, think about it, right? We know people been turnin' up here from other worlds, includin' ours. We know the people who DO turn up don't come from the same point in time. Why some people remember stuff an' some don't, and 'ow some people who were dead ain't dead any more, right?" she explained. "That's 'appenin'. That's a fact," she nodded. "So somethin', or someone's, gotta be makin' it happen. It can't jus' be 'appenin' all natural like. So, all we gotta do is figure it out. Find out what the heck is happenin', an 'ow we can use it to our advantage. There's gotta be a way. I ain't sayin' it's gonna be easy. Who knows 'ow it's happenin'? But there's gotta be somethin' causing it. And it ain't like we ever took the easy path. You jus' got back from flyin' to a floatin' island to twat God in the face. If you can do that, we can do a little thing like figure this mystery out,"Mid explained enthusiastically.
"Anyway, c'mon, let's get you outta that jail cell an' back to the Rest. You can see where we're based. An' I can get you gatherin' up some bits for me. It's gonna take both of us if I'm gonna figure out this 'ole mystery, you realise?" she said, gesturing for him to come to the door and waving for the nearby guard to release him.

"Well, if were on that thing when it blew up, make sense you'd only wake up later. Must be nursin' the hangover from Hell," Mid replied when Clive stated about the oddity in time difference. However, the truth was that she was already considering the other possibilities. Absent mindedly, her hand made its way into her satchel, removing the crumpled pamphlet Celes had given her. "Nah, I'm only jokin'. Celes gave met his little booklet. Says that loads of people show up 'ere, without proper memories, an' at different times. Like I said, well weird," she explained with a shrug. Would it require further investigation? Absolutely. Was now the time for it? Probably not.
"Well, that in't what I 'eard," she shot back when he promised to never leave again. "I 'eard the first thing you did after survivin' a miracle explosion was run off on your own skivvy an' try to blow up the first crystal you saw. You better not be goin' doin' that again! We're a team, Clive!" Mid insisted. "An' clearly you need some supervision from someone who knows what's what," she added, obviously referring to herself. Now that the others weren't around to help.
However, Mid's smile faded a little when Clive began to say he had to tell her what had happened. She could tell that it was bad news. But she listened closely regardless. Bad news might be one thing, but somehow, she had still not been expecting 'the evil god I was fighting had multiple clones hiding inside each crystal'. She supposed that explained some things. After all, the strange crystal in Joshua's chest was supposed to be containing Ultima, and yet, he seemed to walk free too. There being more than one of him made a surprising amount of logical sense. In fact, she was almost annoyed that she hadn't thought of it.
She didn't dwell on it for long though, as Clive confirmed the worse. Joshua, and Dion, were dead. She was aware that she moved her hand to cover her mouth, and turned away from Clive for a moment so that he wouldn't see her emotional reaction. She had known it was a possibility. Of course she had. When they had left the Hideaway for the last time, it had truly felt like the last time. Something had told her they weren't coming back. But still, she had hoped. She had really hoped.
Maybe if she hadn't messed up the Enterprise. Got the airship working instead of losing her nerve. They wouldn't of had to fly up there. Maybe they'd have had a chance. If she had just figured out the problem. But just like when the Mythril engine had stumped her, and she'd needed old work of her Dad's to solve it, she hadn't been able to do it on her own. She was meant to be a genius, but she'd been so useless.
She realised she had scrunched up the pamphlet in her hands in her reaction, and then slowly she looked down at it. Suddenly, she span around, her face lighting up. "Wait! Clive! That's it!" she said excitedly. "The pamphlet! It says people come 'ere from all over their timelines. So people long dead show up an' sometimes people can show up you've not met yet but they know you n' stuff," she explained. "If we can figure out 'ow it's workin', we can pull Joshua an' Dion 'ere from any time we choose. Before Origin! And then Bob's your Uncle, Fanny's your Aunt, we're back in business!" she beamed. "We jus' gotta figure out 'ow this 'ole place is workin'. Which might be easier said than done, but if anyone can do it, it's the two of us, right?" Her tone was almost manic with unhinged optimism, because frankly, it was her only choice. That or face the fact yet more people had died in senseless fighting.

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"

It didn't take a genius, which Mid was, of course, to realise that Celes might not have been hanging on her every word on the trip to the jail. But that didn't matter. It was good enough having her there to sound out her ideas. Her mind was alive with thoughts of airships and cogs and gears and ballasts and how to make the damn thing fly that yes, she had missed trivial details like nearly being run over by a chocobo carriage twice, but that hardly mattered, did it?
In fact, she had been so absorbed in her theorising that the excitement of why they were at the jail had almost entirely been forgotten, but now they were there, and she was back in the moment, she couldn't help but wear a big smirk on her face as she followed Celes through the building, letting her fill out the few forms that she needed to.
And then, there he was. Clive Rosfield. Looking almost exactly as he did the last time she had seen him. Staying in a jail might have been rough, but Clive had made 'looking rough' an art form since before she had met him. She wasn't convinced the man had ever seen a comb or a hair brush in his life. Which, yes, might have sounded like a 'girly' thought and the type of thing Mid usually avoided, particularly saying out loud, but her hair took a lot of care. And it NEEDED it because the last thing she wanted was to get her hair caught in something she was working on at the length it was. Of course, she could just get it cut, but that wasn't going to happen.
Her instinct was to run and hug him. Because she had truly thought he was dead and she wouldn't ever see him again. But she didn't. Mostly because there was still a jail cell in the way, but also because she didn't really want to show THAT much genuine emotion. Not in front of Celes who still barely knew her. Or Clive himself, really, for that reason. So instead, she cocked her hips to the side, one hand resting on them, elbow out, but anybody who knew her would notice her smile was just a tiny bit more genuine and a tiny bit less wry than usual. "Awright, Clive," she said with a nod and a smirk. "Keepin' well, are you? Sounds like you only been 'ere five minutes an' you're already banged up. That's gotta be a record, even fer you," she said with teasing sarcasm.
"'bout a week, I reckon," she answered Clive's question about how long. "As fer the 'ows and the whys? 'aven't the foggiest. One second we're all waitin' fer you, Joshua, and Dion to come back, an' then Origin starts explodin', then I were 'ere. 'ad this theory it had somethin' to do with Ultima's big spell. You said 'e wanted to create a new world, right? Well, looks like 'e may have succeeded. Only, what I don't get, is why we're the only ones 'ere from Valisthea. Take Celes 'ere, for example," she nodded in the direction of Celes. "She's not from this world, but she ain't from ours either. It's well weird," she said with a simple nod.
"Still, won't do nowt worryin' 'bout it now, will it? Let's get you outta 'ere first, then we can start to figure it out," Mid explained. "Honest to Greagor? If the others made it through, an' are just spread out 'ere somewhere, not sure we wanna go back. I mean, no blight 'ere that I can see. No Akashic. An' what we think of as Bearers? Not only they treated equal 'ere, but there's no crystal's curse neither. You can use magic 'til the chocobos come 'ome, and there's no ill effects," Mid went on.
"Also, they got flyin' airships, which I'm tryin' not to be too jealous of. 'course, my design I were workin' on was better, but what they got, it's not 'alf bad. You're gonna 'ave to see it for yourself," Mid went on. And then she paused for a moment, finally stopping talking.
For a moment, her eyes sought the concrete ground where her feet were planted, and her usual confidence seemed to falter. "'Ere, I ain't one for soppy shit, so, I'm jus' gonna say this and be done with it," she said quickly. "...I'm glad you ain't dead. I... were dead worried for a moment," she explained. "Be jus' like you, it would. Runnin' off an dyin' an' an' leavin' me-" she hesitated. Just like him. By which she meant, just like her newest father figure (not that she'd tell Clive that). She lost her birth Dad. She lost Cid. And now it felt like she had lost Clive too. Except she hadn't. He was alright. "-I mean, us, all alone again," she said quickly to correct. "The Hideaway I mean. I mean, you can't leave Gav to run the place, right?" she quickly stammered out, to cover for any trace of actual admittance of feeling.

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"

Mid was a little disappointed that Clive wasn't becoming an official Dragonblade member, but, truthfully, she wasn't sure she really saw the difference. Either way, it sounded like Clive would be working with them. Sure, so this way, he needed a little more supervision. But that was probably for the best. It was a whole new world, and Celes hadn't mentioned Torgul, so they couldn't rely on his dog to pull him out of any mess he got into. Clive might like to run off on his own, but Mid always felt better when there was somebody watching him.
"So, what you're sayin' is, I can ask 'im to get me all the awkward stuff I wouldn't normally ask for, an' not have to feel guilty 'bout it 'cause it's meant to be a punishment?" Mid asked with her usual enthusiasm.
It seemed either way that Celes wanted to go, and Mid was ready. "Alright, no time like the present. Let's get goin'!" she said excitedly, following Celes out of the room. "Wait, did you say 'air tram'?" she asked after a moment as she followed her.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
The duo were approaching the jail, not that Mid seemed to notice, as she hadn't stopped talking since they left the air tram. "...not my fault I din't think about buoyancy. See, to achieve that kind of lift, you need a gas that's lighter than air. A lot lighter than air. We're talkin' at least 0.064 lb/ft cubed of lifting power, an' you can't jus' find that anywhere, right? We din't 'ave that in my world. The thing is, it's gotta operate with a positive buoyancy for you to get lift, but even if you 'ad the right gas, you can't jus' 'av your super light gas and, bang, there's your airship, right? 'cause, 'ow else would you get down? You'd jus' be stuck floatin' around up there like a big balloon. So, instead, you gotta 'ave a way of controllin' air pressure. The pilot would 'ave to increase the air pressure to the blimp so that it matches the gas, makin' it a neutral level of buoyancy so you stop from goin' up. An' to get down, you'd 'ave to make it negative. So I reckon, way it's workin', it's probably usin' fore and aft ballonets, right? So you can move the gas from one t'other an' doin' so makes the air pressure greater than what's in the blimp. 'course, even once you got that, you still need an engine powerful enough to drive the thing. Which is where you could use my mythril engine design. Reckon it's similar to what that air taxi thing 'ad anyway. Should give enough of a kick to get the thing movin'. 'course, then you gotta factor in the weight. Definitely need a closer look at the materials they used. Mythril is pretty light, but still a lotta metal, an' you gotta factor in for the size o' the blimp. Make it too big, an' you got yourself a great big vulnerable area, right? I mean, what if it bursts? So, I was thinkin', it must work in compartments, so even if one bursts, the res' stay full o' gas, like the emergency compartments on a ship. Only, if you 'ave more compartments, you gotta have a more complicated method of movin' the gas between the the ballonets, as you'd 'ave to 'ave one for each compartment, surely, an-"
"Oh, 'ey, we're 'ere," she remarked, realising that they'd arrived at the jail. "Hafta finish me thoughts on the whole thing later," she admitted. "Wonder if they'll lemme get a closer look at it on the way back?" she asked wistfully. "Kinda feels like cheatin', ta be honest, but, it's like me Dad always said. Never look a gift chocobo in the mouth..." she went on. "S'long as that gift chocobo was usin' it's own ingenuity, o' course, and not stolen magic..." she added.
She paused, hands on hips, taking in the jail. "So, this the jail, eh?" she said. "You jus' walk in an' ask 'em to let 'im go? Wow. City must think highly of you. Definitely used to do more beggin' and scrapin' on my end," she admitted.

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"
Engineering Prodigy
Despite Celes's reassurances that she hadn't hurt Clive, Mid would have been a fool to not notice the creeping dread on her face when she mentioned about putting the information on crystals in her pamphlet. Obviously, she feared a repeat. Mid realised that she hadn't really told Celes much about Valisthea. It hadn't seemed necessary. Except, now, it did. Maybe. Maybe Clive had filled her in. Either way, it couldn't hurt to add a little context, right. "Look, it's not 'is fault, right? Not really. Back on me own world, we 'ad these things. Called 'em Mothercrystals. They'd been 'round as long as any human could remember, an' they gave us access to crystals, that let us perform all kinds of magic. Magic that were pretty important to most people's lives, right? Except, we also had this blight. Everything was dyin'. The land, the plants, the animals. Just like life was bein' sucked outta the earth itself. Anyway, it was me Dad who figured it out. The Mothercrystals were suckin' up all the ether from the land. The more magic we got from 'em, the more our world were dyin'. So it was 'is plan to destroy 'em. 'E knew people would 'ate us for it, takin' away all their modern conveniences and that, but it were the only way to save our world," she explained. "Guessin' Clive gettin' here, without that 'andy pamphlet of yours or anybody to make sure his head was on straight, saw the crystal, an' thought it were more of the same. He probably thought he was 'elping. And since everybody tries to talk 'im out of it anyway, an' we're pretty used to people thinkin' we're doin' a bad thing smashin' 'em, I'm guessin' he weren't exactly gonna be easy to convince it weren't the case 'ere," Mid finished.
"Well, uh, I'm sorry 'e tried to hurt you 'n all. Like I said, 'e probably is pretty confused right now," Mid tried to explain to Celes. "Glad to 'ear you din't 'urt him none either, though,. Don't tell 'im I said nowt, but I'm kinda attached to that big idiot," she smiled slightly.
"Prison?" Mid repeated when Celes dropped her bombshell. And then Mid did something Celes probably didn't expect.
She smiled. And she laughed.
"Is that all? I thought it were somethin' serious, your face an' all," Mid smiled. "I 'ad a gil for every time Clive got thrown in jail, I'd 'ave.... well, about five gil. Which ain't much, I know, but, it's more than you 'spect," she remarked with a smirk. "One a' the first times me Dad met Clive, 'pparently, 'e was naked an' in a jail cell. Din't never tell me that whole tale properly, mind. Only 'eard bits an' pieces. A story starts wit' your Dad meetin' 'is best pal naked in a jail cell an' you don't tend to wanna hear the rest," Mid smirked playfully.
"So, what you're sayin' is Clive is joinin' the band?" Mid asked, trying not to sound as excited as she was. "That'll be great, that will be. Need someone like Clive to get me some proper bits n' bobs. What that Caius has got on 'is workbench ain't 'alf bad, but I ain't exactly gonna be buildin' us a workin' airship with it any time soon," she explained.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," Mid confirmed excitedly. "I can't wait to see 'is face when he sees me bailin' 'im out of jail," she grinned, getting ready to follow Celes immediately.

Okay, so judging by Celes's reaction, one important thing Mid had to learn about the Dragonblades was that she was no longer the precocious daughter of the former boss who had practically been raised by the people there, and therefore had a lot of leeway about what she could get away with. Apparently, less so here. She gave her best unphased smile to try and look like she wasn't too concerned. "'ey, well, on the bright side, I was gonna test it on, whatshername, y'know, who don't know how to button up shorts, but thought a dummy was safer. Turns out, that was a good call," she added, not actually having revealed what she had been trying to build or test. Which given it was not a weapon, nor was it supposed to have any fire involved, was probably for the best. "And it weren't meant to catch fire!" she added quickly, in case Celes thought she had been exceptionally reckless. Although on second thoughts, Mid wasn't sure if that was better or worse.
She noticed that Celes took in her handywork, but she didn't think much of it. At least everything in her room was fairly standard, by Mid's standards. Besides, what had she expected from an engineer?
However, as Celes began to describe the scenario she had faced the night before, Mid's expression began to slowly shift. Where Celes looked exhausted, tired and angry, Mid's expression became something of an excited smile, as she realised, even before she said the name exactly who Celes was describing. "Clive! Clive's 'ere!?" she asked, her tone excited, an actual smile on her face. "I'll say, that definitely sounds like 'im!" she enthused, before pausing. "'Ere, maybe you should add not to try an' smash your crystal to your pamphlet thingie, might come in 'andy if anyone else from my world shows up," she added after a moment.
"Wait. 'e fought you? You din't hurt him, did you? 'e's jus' confused, is all," Mid said quickly. "Honestly, we all thought he were dead. I can't believe he's alive! This is great news!" she beamed again, almost for a moment giving Celes an overjoyed hug, before thinking better of it. She didn't really like to show that much emotion, after all.
After a moment, though, she realised that her face was damp, and that she was actually crying. She sniffed, and quickly wiped a tear away, and turned away from Celes to try and look non-chalant. "Sorry, jus', means a lot to me, that big idiot," she explained after a moment. "After me Dad... died, well, it were Clive that carried on his legacy. An' he did a good job of it too. Losin' 'im', it were a bit like losin' me Dad all over again," she tried to tell Celes. And then she quickly wiped her tears away with her arm and turned back to face her.
"So, where is 'e then?" she asked, wondering a little why Celes was calling if Clive wasn't there. She was hoping that Celes hadn't badly hurt him. Or worse. Celes seemed like the type to handle herself, but she couldn't see her being able to take Clive in a fight. On the bright side, she doubted he had turned into Ifrit. She suspected she'd have heard about that, even there, if that had happened...

"Still busy savin' the world, then?"

The knock at the door was both a surprise, and yet somehow, not unexpected. Mid had assumed that it would be coming, and she was already confident that she could explain away the incident. Someone must have ratted her out. Probably one of the people in the training yard. It hadn't been her fault. And besides, it was only one target and it wasn't like they were using it. Maybe Celes counted them every night. She seemed like the type.
Mid opened the door, peering out with just her face, keeping her room mostly obscured for the moment. "Okay, I know what you're gonna say, an' I jus' want it on the record, I din't know that lubricant was that flammable. Ain't like that in my world. An,' okay, so I kinda set fire to that target dummy an' blew it to kingdom come, an' I understand 'ow that kinda looks bad, but that's what the dummy was for, right? I'll get it right next time. Got a whole bunch of new ideas," Mid assured Celes. "An' on the bright side, that fire suppressant gizmo I knocked up worked a right treat, since we din't all burn down or nowt," she added cheerfully.
And then she paused. And realised that wasn't why Celes was there.
"Uh, nevermind," she said quickly, as the door to her room swung open, revealing...
...actually, a surprisingly tidy room. At least at first glance. A slightly closer glance would reveal a rack of shelving holding various pieces and even the odd text book that Mid had already discovered. What was interesting was that the room hadn't come with said shelves. She had clearly hastily constructed them. On a small writing desk was a half built model of a ship, surrounded by tiny gears and cogs. A work in progress, yes, but Mid wasn't going to have some other engineers knowing how to build airships and leaving her to discover it, so she knew she had work to do.
"Uh, can I 'elp with anythin'?" she asked. Honestly, it was quite nice to see Celes. The two had gotten off on a friendly foot, and despite her age, she had always felt involved back in the Hideaway's running of things. So it was a nice idea to be equally involved with the Dragonblades, even if she knew she was the new girl...
