One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Ah, he was trying to be the stern, stoic type, huh. Alex looked him over once, and decided that the guy was just... not a match for it. Like at all. Colorful cloth even with the black that he wore, that really strange looking sword... knife... what the hell was that thing? He'd seen a lot of strange weapons but never anything like that as he eyed it. ... He kinda wanted one, if he was being honest. But he brought his attention back up to Noel's face. The babyface. That was really what went poorly with the stoic type. The guy was prettier than most girls he knew. He shook his head. "No, but it's a crapshoot otherwise. You don't know who has it, the adventurer doesn't know where or who to go to. I provide a middle man that organizes everything. A bureaucrat with competitive prices, even with monster hunting. Maximum kill for minimum bill." ... That was a good tagline. He should steal it before Caius thought of it.
"Huh, Noel." Alex spoke the name aloud, seeing how it felt on his tongue. Eh, it felt fine. Now at least he had a name to the boy. Still, parents must have had their hopes pinned on a daughter, he figured. Or maybe they thought he was a daughter and just never figured it out. Honestly, Alex noticed, looking at Noel, that's just not fair. Either he was young or he had aged absurdly well. Alex took a moment to raise a finger, tugging at the lines near his eyes before sighing in subtle envy. "But if you're a hunter? You're heavensent as far as I'm concerned. I've been doing most of the hunting jobs around here, and it'll be nice to take a breather for a bit." Alex still had to make money. He wasn't some immortal who could feed off aether alone like an Ascian.
Placing his hands on his hips, he looked around. "But to start, you're in the town square, as you've probably guessed. This is where people do a lot of their business. Believe it or not, this place was only repaired recently. A few months ago, two assholes and a guy I know got into a fight and wrecked the place. And my shop." His brow furrowed as he looked at the wreckage of his abode, an eye sore amongst the lovely town. His eyes trailed once again back to Noel. "... Unrelated, you wouldn't happen to know a guy with spiky blonde hair and a huge sword, would you? He and I need to have a little dialogue." He hadn't forgotten, he wouldn't forget. Oh, he would make that blonde homewrecker pay. In gil and in beatings.
He chuckled a little at Noctis backtracking, letting out a simple "Smooth." As the prince got in the car. Right, there was absolutely no sign of recognition in Noctis's eyes. At this point, this late in the game, that didn't even surprise him anymore. He'd expected it, but really, really hoped against hope that this would be a rare exception but it was not meant to be. It was a shame, too, as it would have made dealing with Prompto easier when he could have had Noct himself verifying it. Maybe. This of course assumed that the idea that Alex having been telling the truth the entire time wouldn't have just upset Prompto even more, which Alex considered a distinct possibility. Closing his eyes for a moment, Alex simply nodded. "Yeah that's about what I was expecting." Maybe not those exact words, but confusion and getting details wrong. It was becoming the norm here.
Until he blinked for a moment and looked at Noct. "Wait, you guys have Voidsent, too?" Alex knew the word daemon. Another word for voidsent, beings from the thirteenth shard that often found their way to the Source one way or another. Too often it was some idiot with a harebrained scheme to control the power of daemons for himself that brought them over, and more often than not, it fell to Alex to fix the problem when it got out of hand. Thoughts of Diabolos and Scathach and the Cloud of Darkness came to him. He really hoped they didn't show up here. They were exasperating. But knowing that Noct's world had them did help. He shook his head, dismissing them as he moved on to what else Noctis said; "Gralea, right. Uhm, so you're not in your world anymore. You just had the fortune of being dropped in the one place most like it, in a completely different world. You're on Zephon."
What the fuck was a Gralea? Prompto admittedly hadn't helped much. Not that Alex made an admirable effort. Oh, sure, a couple times to reach out and get to know him, but whenever they talked, it went wrong, and eventually Prompto just sulked in his room and Alex, unsure of what to do, just left him there. The whole situation had been... regrettable. For him. Namely he regretted how a lot of it went down. But, well, he'd confirmed that this wasn't Eos, and that Alex probably wasn't from his world. Which left the obvious question. "As for how I know you, Which he considered the obvious question. "Do you want the truth or do you want me to make up something believable? Because when I tried the truth last time, it didn't go well. People don't usually like it when you recognize them and they don't recognize you." He scratched a finger at his temple as he looked away. Well, he didn't recognize Prompto and vice versa, but him knowing Noctis just... set Prompto on fire, and it was so ridiculous.
Meanwhile the man continued on his phone outside. Alex couldn't hear him, but he did gesture towards the two of them, bending down to look at the back of his car. He started to become increasingly irate as he pointed a finger downward where he was standing. Was he expecting his mum to show up or something?

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Oh, he had good instincts. Knew enough about being looked at that, even in a decently busy square, he knew to turn and find out who it was. Alex approved. That was a good sign. Then at least if he was new to all this he... probably wouldn't get himself killed quickly. Maybe he'd have someone on board who could stay out of trouble and not get shot at by guards and require Alex to step in and--ah, but that was another bitter affair that may have been best left untouched. "Yup. Gotta get things fixed somehow. Things are just a bit of a mess." He confessed, stretching a bit in the Spring air. A mess was understating it. It hadn't gotten that much worse, but it hadn't gotten that much better, either. He really needed a stroke of good fortune or something, and well, with Alex, that was just something that was never going to happen, not with him.
Slipping around the young man with... they kind of had similar hair now that he thought about it. His was blonde to the other guy's brown, though. Regardless, he reached over, taking a piece of paper for himself as he read the description. "I run an Adventurer's Guild here in town. It helps pay the bills." Really, when he stopped to think about it, the fact that the Rising Stones still got any jobs at all was kind of a miracle in and of itself. Most people would have taken the place for abandoned. But perhaps some had pity in this town, and he still got jobs because of it. Maybe they were just hoping he'd fix the damn place and it wouldn't be as much of an eyesore on the town. Everyone else had gotten back up and running, and he was the only one lagging behind.
His amber eyes scanned the paper over. Just a simple hunt and punt, got it. Find the monster, kill it, come back and get the gil. He could do that. But that could be later, as he looked back up to stare at the newcomer. "But if you're new here, guess that makes me your tour guide." Which, well, if they were going to be doing things within the vicinity of each other, well, "Oh, right, names." He remarked as he crumpled the paper into his pocket. He'd kind of forgotten. "Alexander Sorel, Adventurer." Definitely going to leave the Warrior of Light bit out of that. That was a dusty road he had no intention of going down, and Caius was free to walk it all he liked with Cassandra following him down it. Once was enough.
Sonora had materials, and materials was what he needed. Specifically, he needed things like lumber to rebuild the Rising Stones. What with Prompto having gone and left, it was back to just him cleaning the place. Because like hell Matoya was going to do it. He found himself flying swiftly through the freezing air on Ragnabawk's back. He envied the bird, and his warm, uniquely scented plumage. Of course, things hadn't been looking too good. What with the front that was coming in behind him. He might be able to get to Sonora in time, but it would be a close one. Even then, he wasn't sure he'd be welcome. Ever since he'd saved Prompto, he wasn't sure how much Sonora remembered of him. Maybe while he was there he'd pay Aerith a visit, too, update her on how the Sephiroth thing had gone. He wasn't dead, so that was a good thing, right?
Wondered how she was doing.
It seemed he wasn't the only one wondering, as a yellow vehicle drove up beside and below him, the window rolling down. A man leaned out, beckoning Alexander to get inside the car, stating that it was going to be getting real bad. In fact, it was such a priority that he get in and be safe, that the man was offering Alexander a discount for it, too! "That actually sounds like a really good--Wait, did you say discount?" Alex caught on at the last second, his eyes narrowing in outrage. Who made a big deal about how your life was in danger, and then still charged for the life saving? What kind of prick did that? Adventurers, obviously, but he didn't need to say it out loud.
The driver shrugged. "Yeah? Gotta make money, buddy."
Alex's temper flared. "I'm not your buddy, guy."
"I'm not your guy, friend."
There was a long pause before Alex gave up. "... Fine." He remarked, landing and sending Ragnabawk on his way, getting into the back of the car. He took a moment to admire the seating; real leather, cozying up and silently looking out the window as the car sped towards Sonora at a leisurely pace. Of course, it all got interrupted as suddenly a loud thud was heard, and a familiar face, looking like a serial killer, landed on the hood, looking at the two of them upside down. Alex blinked for a moment, recognizing the features of the man, taking a moment to process it before he said the name. "Noctis?" The driver, who up until now had been raging and cursing at the disruptive youth, wheeled around.
"You know this guy?!"
And Alex nodded. "Yeah, I do, actually."
There was another pause as the driver looked back at Noctis, and then to Alex. Rolling down his window, he leaned out again, motioning to the passenger's side. "Right, um. Get in. I'm just gonna. Make a call to mum. Let her know I'll be late. Why don't you two catch up?" Pulling out a strange black rectangle, to Alex anyway, he stepped out of the car, making sure to roll the window back up. He was apparently giving the two of them some privacy, that was nice.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
He'd grown rather fond of his red sweater. Especially with it being a pleasant cool; nothing too hot, nothing too cold, and the striking colors helped him stand out. He'd been coming here more and more to get some work. He needed the gil, naturally. Ever since he'd passed up what was surely a sizable bounty for Sephiroth, curse his conscience, he'd had to grind at it harder. To be honest, ever since the Rising Stones had been wrecked, more business had been returning to the Notice Board. Which was bad. He needed to get it repaired and get it back up and running. More work meant more gil which meant he could repair the place faster and get back on his feet. Especially seeing as there was a wing of the Dragonblades here. Well, they were more fledgling here, but he still knew he was under the gun for time.
He wasn't always the only person at the Notice Board going for work, too. Adventurers, both new and seasoned would often check for jobs as well. Which meant that he usually had to get up pretty early to get the best of it. Today was not one of those early days, and it showed. Namely, there was already someone there, looking at jobs. Loose cloth clothing, with sashes and bands. A unique toy on him. Seriously, what the hell was that? He'd never seen anything like it before. It also meant that this guy either had some kind of heirloom from his ma or pa, or maybe he was one of the more seasoned adventurers? Bless and splash his luck, eh? Maybe he could figure something out, maybe get in on the job. Maybe if he was really lucky, he'd have a new recruit he could throw out there to help him get some gil.
Which was why Noel quickly found himself with Alex nearby behind him. His face was straight as a board for a moment, unmoving, before his eyes glanced downwards at the young man and he smiled. Be nice, and all that. "I don't think I've seen you before." He remarked, pointing a singular finger, "So IIIIIII, am guessing you're new here." Granted, so was he. He'd only been here a year. Compared to some of the other outworlders, he was a baby. But well, as long as he was here, he might as well enjoy it, right? After all, if the Source was going to be destroyed, it probably already was! Ah, not, really the best thing to think about, as the concern at that thought knotted in his chest before he banished it away.
Alex looked at Prompto, completely and utterly bewildered by the sudden outburst by the younger gentleman. That... that was a violent reaction to what Alex had considered to be an extremely simple question. Sure, one could argue that he was ignorant of its meaning, but that was also the other part; there was no genuine intention of offense, Noctis never bothered to explain the politics and symbolism of that sort of thing. Maybe he was pressed for time, considered it unimportant to an offworlder, or maybe he just wasn't one for that sort of thing to begin with. Still, Alex could only look on as Prompto huffed and puffed, finally ending his outburst. "Wow. Okay." Alex blinked. Once, twice, before his gaze narrowed, squinting at Prompto.
He was gonna push back. He looked at Matoya for a moment, "I'll get that tea in a moment," And he would. But the reality was he'd just been called a liar, and he really didn't appreciate that. Sure he lied at times. He was lying to Prompto right now about being some adventurer, though was that a lie? He was just that in this world, but that didn't mean Prompto could just call him out like that. Uncalled for. He held up his hands in a defensive manner. "To start, Noctis never made me a Crownsguard. I'm not that special. Out of need, he made me a Kingsglaive. Because he was about to get shitslammed by a god from your world that was 'testing him.'" While also making it a point to use air quotes for those last two words. "Seriously, are all tests from your gods brutal murder attempts?"
And then, placing a hand on his hip and pointing at the young gunslinger, he continued on. "Also, the way you reacted, well, I'm wondering right now if Noct's fiancée is back on the market. Have you seen her in that white dress, Prompto?" He threw up his hands as he stormed off to get that tea, quickly hurrying some orders to the poroggos to come with him. Had Prompto seen her though? Well, probably. He was actually from that world. Alex had only caught a glimpse of the woman for the few seconds before Noctis got yanked back to his world, but still. But there was that underlying remark there that Alex hadn't actually remarked out loud. That being said, for the moment, he left Prompto and Matoya alone as he got to work on that tea, the sound of pouring water, and some mumbled cursing about "Should've brought my godsdamned kettle." The Kettle Nexus would have saved the day.
And then he finally spoke up, meaning to be heard this time, as he shouted from the back "Hips to die for, Prompto!"
And of course, when you're leaning against the wall trying to get some sun, there are people that notice you and wonder what you're up to. On the flipside, if they're muttering to themselves, you can generally pick up what it is they're hearing. Someone remarking about how they're getting younger. Wait, does this place have anti-aging properties? Though the question might have been whether it had aging properties after all. At first he would've dismissed it as someone being pulled from an earlier time, but, well, the way it was worded, he was wondering if they came here older and were getting younger. That'd be nice... to an extent. His hands reached up, tugging a bit at his eyes. He'd quite like to get rid of some of the wrinkles that had appeared. Though admittedly that'd been more a result of stress than anything. Biologically he was... about twenty-six, if he had it right.
An eye opened, beholding a younger girl with strawberry hair. Huh, that hair color. Admittedly it was a rare one. Even in his world, where vibrant shades of green were entirely possible, as Seyka could attest, he'd only known of one person that had that color naturally. He thought. Despite his many run ins with Lightning when she'd been stuck in his world, he'd never really the chance to ask. The process usually had been their paths crossing as one or the other was in the middle of an ongoing shitstorm, fighting it out together, and then going their separate ways. By the time they actually had an opportunity to sit down, she was being whisked away by some other force to go fight her own battles, remarking that she probably wouldn't have remembered any of it. A pity, she had really enjoyed their world. Maybe if she ever showed up here, he could find some way to jog those memories.
She was staring at him. Maybe she needed something done? That was how it was a lot of the time. You looked like an adventurer, people would normally be willing to pay you for something like that. It was... nice, here. Here, he was just another one trying to get by. No world to save, no heroics required. Just another face in the crowd for a job. He blinked a couple times, a couple out of sync before fully coming to. "Yes?" He asked politely. Unless she just wanted to watch him for some reason. ... He didn't look that weird, did he? No, of course not. Did he?
The Adventurer looked at Prompto and eased away at the remark of maybe being a little more... informative. Was he being that obtuse? He blinked a couple of times, choosing to keep his silence lest he make it worse. It was only when Matoya really made him look good that he finally spoke up again. He confirmed Prompto's remarks as Alex cleared his throat awkwardly. Yeah, he had asked for help for Prompto. It's just... you know, Cassandra would have probably had a very diplomatic and pleasing response. Then again, Prompto probably would have found Cassandra rather pleasant to begin with. Most everyone did, really. There was a very good reason she had been the party face back in their world. "Well, yeah, why wouldn't I help?" He looked away, scratching his neck. Instead, he simply stayed quiet again as he let Matoya explain the Eye, she was the expert, after all.
At least until she brought up the Echo, then his brows perked. Wait, no, that wasn't how the Echo worked. Gift from the Mother--Right, she hadn't been to the First. She hadn't seen Elidibus' tomfoolery. Jeez that had been a disaster, but illuminating nonetheless. He just... really hoped the Emissary didn't show up here. A Primal formed from thoughts and prayers of heroes across the Rift? He'd be unstoppable here. "Oh yeah, that's right, you weren't there for... hrm." In fairness, it was the dominant theory for a reason; it was the only one that made sense with what information was available at the time. "So uh, in some adventures, I found out some things about the Echo you might want to hear later." He gave a thumbs up. She liked new knowledge, right? If nothing else, it might keep her interested for a moment. Something to talk about later.
Maybe though, change the subject, and shut up, as he stepped away quietly when Prompto brought the guns out. Still, shutting up, or changing the subject, was something that was likely a better idea. Instead, taking the moment to bring up something more related. Brushing his hands against his pants as he inhaled, he thought of something else. "Right, out of curiosity, when Noctis came to our world for a bit," He pointed at Matoya and himself to emphasize the 'our world', "He shared this kind of power with me, albeit only very briefly. Would I have these traces, too? Or too brief?" Other than that, let Prompto uh, work his magic, he guessed? Although it'd be nice to be able to give Prompto some confirmation of what he'd said in the past.
With the last of the cats stuffed away for the moment, Alex took a moment to look at himself. He had been quite grateful that he'd actually been wearing his armor for all of this. Otherwise he imagined he'd probably have plenty of scratch marks all over him. Something he'd... quite like to avoid. Those always stung when you cleaned them. Still, his eyes narrowed at just the sheer amount of cat hair that now adorned him. He really, really hoped that if Prompto was gonna make it a habit of taking care of these cats, that he'd at least make sure to keep them groomed so they didn't shed everywhere. He'd go change first, then come out. Yeah, that made sense, as he made his way to his room, at least for a little bit. The cats were taken care of, and Alex, well, he wasn't entirely hiding per se. Just... staying out of Matoya's way while he got into something a bit more comfortable; the red sweather, the suspenders, ah it was always just something comfortable. Plus who knows, it brought him good luck the last time he wore it, maybe it would this time as well. Go out after this, get some espresso, maybe he'd run into the blonde homewrecker.
Patting his chest, he smiles when he was dragged away from his bliss by the sound of an old witch. He turned his head to the source. Matoya couldn't do anything like this? What in the world could stymie the masterful mage so? Well, that was an easy answer to be honest, if it was her temper, at least. But he didn't pick up her fury. Was he misreading it? There was a pause as he thought it over before coming to a conclusion and calling out "He's giving you that look, isn't he? That's just how he usually is!" Yep, lost puppy, that was pretty much Prompto's default expression. He'd gotten used to it before with Ryne, but having two youngsters that just looked like that all the time was, well, difficult. At least the two of them hadn't really met yet, and neither of them had gotten the idea to combine their dastardly powers to get all the gil they could out of Alexander, and for that, he was grateful.
Grumbling slightly to himself when she just went and marked up her prices, witch, he made himself presentable at least. He stepped out back into the group, his vanishing act at an end. Crossing his arms, he huffed slightly. "Joke's on you, I'd just do it if you asked." While, yes, getting something out of it was always appreciated, if Matoya ever really needed something, he wouldn't argue or haggle, he'd just go get the damn thing. He looked around, what was it she needed? A table? Well, that was easy enough, probably a place to set the Eye down and all that. Alex rushed out front momentarily, grabbing the edges of a table and dragging it on over, the wood scraping against the floor. Thank the Twelve it wasn't that large of a table, at least. It'd take him a few more moments, but he'd follow it up with a couple chairs. Prompto and Matoya were free to sit, he didn't mind standing.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Alex chewed on the nut, "You've never met the moogles of my world. All they do is play pranks on each other to get out of work." Lazy fuzzballs. He wasn't apologizing for shit as the world began to turn. He should've known better. He really should've known better. As soon as the ground started swimming, there was a slight mental cursing. He really hoped when he came to, he wasn't in something compromising. The largest chocobo squawked its approval. Wait, he could understand it? He looked at his now empty hand where the nut had once been. Did it bring back the Echo or something? Couldn't have. There was no brain splitting migraine that accompanied it. Though that was only for flashbacks, wasn't it? For the memories? Wait, was his thought process diminishing as well? Di-mi-ni-shing. There was a lot of Is in that word, now that he thought about it. It also sounded really similar. Who even came up with the idea of how words were formed? Did everyone just sort of agree on it, or?
Wait, what were they doing again? Oh, right, being led off by chocobos to go meet this Fat Chocobo that so desperately wanted to meet Ragnabawk. "Hey," Alex heard a voice, bringing some clarity back to him. Following it to its source, he saw Ragnabawk staring at him. Huh, that was odd. But it got even odder when the beak opened, and actual words started coming out. Well, it'd been a while since he got that. "Can you just... not use your Blue Magic for once? Please? These guys are cool and I don't want you embarrassing me." Alex stared at his feathery friend for a moment, not really shocked at Ragnabawk talking in and of itself. After all, if he'd gotten the Echo back, then this shouldn't be too much of a surprise, but...
"Wha--You embarrass me, too! You keep trying to eat Seyka's hair whenever we see her!"
Ragnabawk preened. "She should have thought about that before being born with green hair. If I see flowing green, I'm going to eat it. Which, speaking of greens, can you talk to Prompto when we get back? I appreciate the gesture but the greens he gets me are kind of... low budget for me, if you get my meaning."
Low budget?! When did he get so spoiled?! Was Bartz hearing this shlock, too?! Not that it mattered, as Bartz was dancing, as was everyone else. Was it all in his head or? Another dizzy feeling as he shook his head. Oh it was getting worse. What was this about a pas-dee-doo? Bartz was looking at him expectantly. "Hold up," He held up a hand, "I don't--I don't have, like, a clue, what you just said." He knew it was a dance but, well, dancing wasn't completely his strong suit. He could do it. Kind of. But... Was he supposed to be dancing right now or?
He swayed a little. Why did everything look so much more vibrant.
"Sundrop or Moonlift will just scare them..." No, those were war dances. Meant for intimidation. And then it hit him. Of course. There were Moogles here! The answer was right in front of him all along! No wait, this was an oppportunity. Another dance under his belt. He was no Dancer, of course, but adding another one to the repertoire was always good--what about the Mambo? No, he should make sure what he was supposed to be doing, first. Hesitantly, he reached out a hand. "Do I just follow along or do my own thing orrrrr?" Just relax, give in to the swirling pool that was the world. It would all be over soon.
