When Zack saw the situation with Aerith begin to unfold, he had a feeling that the hulking armored man was up to something: no way someone with that kind of build would simply wait to let a magic caster get a spell off unless they had some kind of plan. When he saw the man quite literally charge through a thundaga, even Zack was a little bit shocked (no pun intended). That guy must have had some serious superhuman durability and stamina to take that kind of hit. When he saw the man literally attempt to grab Aerith in his arms, the 1st class soldier's eyes widened in shock and slight horror: that kind of attack could seriously damage any normal person if this "Viy" had that kind of strength.
Zack wasn't about to let that happen to Aerith.
Having found a respite now that his opponent was still recovering from being tossed into one of the church walls, Zack broke into a sprint down the center asile of the church, moving twoard the now somewhat destroyed flower patch. He wasn't going to make it, but he had to close the distance.
Then, Rather suddenly, as Aerith fell backward her opponent quite suddenly shrunk. after a split second, he was only about a foot in size, standing on the ground before Aerith.
"huh?" the tiny Viy squeaked, clearly somewhat caught off guard by the attack, as now he found himself looking like a very large action figure. When the fire two hit, however, the tiny man was knocked off his feet, the fire-based damage that was inflicted being averagely potent...but again, the tiny warrior stood up. Whoever the hell this guy was, he seemed to have some crazy levels of durability, either due to the suit or due to some other insane factor of his ability.
"NO ESCAPE!" the tiny man attempted to roar, but it came out as more of some high-pitched squeal due to his size. Still, he charged forward once again, but this time, he himself began to do something that was not expected:
Viy began to cast a spell.
"SILEN-huh?" He began, attempting to cast the spell designed to suppress mages. Unfortunately, his vision was blocked by the movement of a large, black leather-like object that moved toward him with incredible speed. Viy didn't recognize what it was until it had hit him and sent him flying through the air like a football and its owner decided to be kind enough to give him an explaination with an exclaimation.
"BOOT TO THE FACE!"
The mini-Viy was sent sailing through the air, letting out an angry yell that sounded more like a tiny squeal due to his voice having been so miniaturized. His destination was an unfortunate window that he simply sailed through like a small cannonball. A split second later, it seemed that the battle had at least hit some kind of lull.
"You alright?" Zack inquired as he looked around to try and get a visual on the other opponent. Unfortunately, by the time he did it was already too late: Geis had moved up to the rafters of the church high above, and in this case he had already let loose his spell: Stop. The spell was targeting Aerith, as a massive clock was summoned above her position. If the clock reached Zero above her in about two seconds, then Zack knew what would happen, Unfortunately even he wasn't fast enough to react: by the time he saw the spell, it was already one second away from its countdown.
"Aerith!" Zack exclaimed, as it was the only thing he could do in the split second he had to react.
Aerith saw that her mini spell had worked as she stuck her staff in the ground to keep herself from falling backwards. Honestly, she would have picked him up and cooed for a moment over the mini-Viy, if he wasn’t some weirdo with insane durability that was trying to capture her that is. A Bolt:3 and Fire:2 spell didn’t put him out of the fight, and even in the smaller form he was ranting and raving. Her eyes began to widen as he yelled the spell for silence; only to be punted into the air clear across quite a way and through a window.
The sound of shattering glass made her cringe, and she added that to the list of things that would need to be fixed once this was all over.
She looked to Zack, silent gratitude clear in her eyes, and a tired, amused smile on her lips. Straightening her back, the woman would take in a deep breath, realizing she had stopped breathing there for a moment in her effort to subdue the large foe. “No need to worry,” Aerith answered while removing the end of her staff from the earth. She looked around, taking an account of the area, and saw Zack looking up towards the ceiling.
The spell had a certain feeling to it when it hit her, the countdown rapidly approaching. Two seconds.
Her head whipped up and she saw the smaller man, Geis, up in the rafters above. How he’d managed to recover from what Zack had put him through moments earlier, Aerith didn’t know. But like Viy, he seemed to be durable, if not as large as the other.
Zack yelled her name, and there was an echo that buzzed in her ears like the sound of steal clashing. It made her cold from her toes to her fingertips;
Aerith..!!
But it was a comforting cold. Something she was used to, like a cold rain. Her mouth stayed closed in the line that had formed moments earlier, not needing to utter the words to the feeling that was welling up deep inside her. It was a reflex; a reaction to oncoming despair and the need to overcome.
A green wind blew, whipping up the flowers as the clock above her started to turn to the final digit, zero. Healing Wind; Aerith’s ‘Limit Break’ as some called it. It filled the air with the sweet scent that hung around the church, and the clock above her disappeared as the overload of healing magic dissipated the status effect.
She was gasping for breath afterwards, having not used it since she came to this new land. It rejuvenated her, but at the same time she felt drained from the mental exhaustion.
Aerith was forced to use her staff for support again, stubborn to not fall when the battle was still going on. Just need to catch my breath, she thought to herself as she sucked it into her lungs, tasting the remnants of the spell on her tongue.
A part of her was shocked that it could pull off such a feat, and another was telling that she was used to it. She did this all the time. She hoped that the SOLDIER would understand that she wasn’t under any immediate threat anymore after that display, and not fuss over her like her mother would whenever she came home and told her she had to run and escape the Turks once again.

Notes: Ba-bang! That took me longer to write than I thought it would.
It was an impressive display that Zack hadn't seen before: while he had gotten the hint that Aerith could use magic, the magic she used to counter the incoming stop spell was...serene, almost. There was a peaceful tranquility that seemed to ease Zack's wounds. Normally heal spells could quite powerful, but this seemed not as much about the strength as it was the intention behind it.
The intention behind it, and the serenity it brung to Zack's ailing mind...that was something special. It helped remind Zack about why Aerith was such a special woman, a special person: the comfort she brought to others. It's what got him through much of his darkest days.
Like the day he had to take the life of his mentor.
Meanwhile, Geis had been caught completely off guard by the action: What should have been an easy stop spell had been completely negated by a magic he had never even seen before. Was this why people wanted this woman so badly? This magic? It was tough to say. But as strange as that magic was, Geis was not down for the count. Leaping down from the rafters in a manner akin to a ninja, Geis saw an opening. If that woman was exhausted enough, he could probably get close and stun her while she was recovering.
Unfortunately, he overestimated his own speed and underestimated the speed of the woman's seeming bodyguard. Zack saw every step of the man's blurringly fast speed. So easily, in fact, that by the time the man got within ten feet of the woman, the back of the massive buster sword smashed into his torso, sending him hurtling out the hole where the front door used to be. Watching and waiting for a few moments to see if any more attackers would decided to drop in, Zack stood at the ready for a few moments before finally placiing the buster sword back into the harness on his back.
"Well, that seems to be taken care of...with some minor damage. Aerith, are you oka-GAAAH!"
Literally as Zack was about to turn around and use helping her walk as an excuse to get to hold a his pretty (possibly ex) girlfriend, he turned around and was rather startled to see an old pastor. It wasn't that the man was scary, but the sheer surprise of seeing him standing up near the altar calmly lighting some candles had caught the 1st class SOLDIER off guard.
"Whoa, how'd you get down here so fast pops?" Zack asked, perhaps in a tone that might have indicated less respect for the father of the church than may have been intended. Thankfully the man seemed to take the statement in the spirit for which it was given (even if Zack did kind of put his foot in his mouth).
"Child, I've been here for several minutes. None of you seemed to notice me in the chaos though...Understandable, since those two ruffians seemed content to kidnap one of my flock. I appreciate your assistance in showing them the door. Or in perhaps one case, the stain glass window." The man said. As he did, Zack became noticeably panicked. He saw what Zack had done.
"Oh crap, uh, Father I'm so sorry about the window, I know how valuable those things can be-"
"Oh nonsense. That one was a fake: we already had someone get tossed through that same window last year, so I put in a fake one. I think it might have even been one of those same ruffians that bothered you...Minus the fancy armor. As for the door, I know where those miscreants tend to hang out, so I'll happily stop by and ask them to pay for the damages."
"Are you sure, father? those guys looked kind of dangerous. I wouldn't want you to get-"
"Oh, don't worry about me. The "word" of god can be very pursuasive to those of little faith who wrong his home." The man responded. While Zack didn't detect anything hostile about the man's intent, he did get a little chill down his spine. Especially when he noticed the letters W, O, R and D tattooed onto both of the man's knuckles. Zack almost wanted to ask about it, but thought that perhaps it might be best to let it go. Moving over to Aerith, Zack rather smoothly attempted to wrap his arm around her wait to help hold her up (as well as get a chance to get to hold her again. Maybe it wasn't the best time to be clever, but Zack rarely had a good sense of timing).
"...I can carry you if you'd like." Zack offered to Aerith, a slightly mischevious grin crossing his features.
Aerith lifted her head up as she heard the resounding crack of the buster sword connecting with Geis’s stomach. Her head turned to look out the door, waiting with bated breath to see if anymore would pop up out of the woodworks. When they didn’t, she let out a relieved sigh. Glad that’s over with…
She moved her grip up on the staff and started to straighten herself up, her attention turning to the puppy. Her eyes widened at his sudden outburst near the end of what he was saying (Honestly, she was FINE.), she straightened up and lifted her staff from the ground. When her gaze settled on the priest, she looked back over her shoulder at Zack and then back at the pastor before she began to smile a hopefully not that nervous, please don’t be angry smile in the priests direction.
“Za-ack,” Aerith said in a warning sort of way as he started to address the pastor, her staff jabbing the ground again as she leaned her weight against it. The sudden appearance of him had surprised her too, and she was waiting for the ‘pay for the damages’ talk. It didn’t come, and her eyes widened comically for a moment before her face broke out into a sunny smile. Quite tempted she was to slap her palm against her face when she heard the ‘crap’, she just shook her head a few times and remained silent as she listened to the frantic-on-Zack’s-part exchange.
Aerith was so glad that he didn’t seem to mind the damage that they had caused, or been a part of. That didn’t mean she wasn’t going to help clean up, though. She was ‘one of the flock’ after all, and she’d have to do some serious work on the flowers to get them back to the condition they were before the fight.
Surprised to find that the Pastor had tattoos, even more so with what it contained, Aerith couldn’t help the laughter that started to come up again. It was all just so strange, standing her in a church of all things. Honestly, not a moment was boring with Zack around. With anyone else, it’d be abnormal, but all the funny, crazy things that happened around the Soldier weren’t. It was like he was a magnet for them, like she was trouble.
With an arm making its way across her waist while she was thinking about flowers and priests with tattoos, Aerith had almost jammed her elbow into his ribs (It would have done her more damage if she had), but stopped when she felt that it wasn’t all that endangering of a hold. Her head tilted up a bit to look at Zack, and she rolled her eyes at him and moved her weight off of the staff. “I don’t need to be carried.” But she didn’t object to being held.
For a moment that is. “That was an unwelcome surprise that I wasn’t ready for, is all.” Aerith said as she seemed to skip a few paces forward, her feet avoiding the areas where some of the flowers had been spared. “Normally thugs aren’t as well-equipped as they were.” She continued as her knees bent and her grip on the staff loosened, letting it fall to the ground so she could start checking the delicate plants.
Being around Zack was the same as it was, before he left. Almost. They’d have to talk about that though, but not after a fight like that. Aerith just wanted some calm right at that moment, and that was in the form of her being finger deep in dirt and doing what she did best, before healing, and that was being the Flower Girl. “It’s nice to see you again, Zack.” She said over her shoulder, her voice conveying the gentleness, the not-angry-with-him, the acceptance (But questioning), wrapping it up in a bundle of Aerith-ness.

Notes: *throws pillow against wall* Aerith is too nice for her own good dang it
Zack realized after the fact how bad his little attempt at being playful with Aerith was. One that she made her displeasure very apparent with after the fact. Zack did one of the things that he was known for by some: acting somewhat like a scolded puppy as he scratched the back of his head, seeming to take the scolding seriously as he looked over the damage.
"...Sorry. Got carried away, its been awhile and, well, its really good to see you again. Started to think I never would see anyone I knew again after I woke up here." Zack apologized. He knew it seemed like he was changing emotions a bit here: not long ago he was having flashback nightmares about his own death after being launched from an airship and crashing through a church roof. Now he was trying to get close to Aerith again. It was quite a switch, as he was well aware of at this point. It was also somewhat intentional.
His own death was quite an obvious difficult spot for Zack. Something he had far more time to reflect on than he thought. While the details between it and waking up in a new world were hazy, he could remember the feelings associated with it: That initial relief of being guided back to the lifestream after such a harrowing journey, both deep into the planet as part of one of his greatest missions, and facing down an entire battalion of infantry that ultimately led to his death. The 1st class SOLDIER imagined it was a difficult thing for anyone to deal with, yet still had a lot of things that he needed answers for. Like what had happened after his death.
And what his "Secret Mission" into the deepest known cave in the planet had been.
Zack quietly sat down onto one of the pews, looking over the damage to the church with a bit of guilt as he contemplated quite a bit. Wasn't Cloud supposed to be the quiet one who thought about things too much? (even though technically he spent most of their journey together in a semi-comatose haze). Still, even someone as sociable as Zack needed to reflect every once in awhile. Taking his mind off the difficult thoughts that had been plaguing him, and trying to ignore a strange aching in his chest that came upon thinking about his death, Zack turned to being mindful of the current situation.
"Those thugs...The Pastor said he knew them. That mean's they've been around here before: clearly they didn't have the same destructive capacity without that equipment. While they weren't 1st class material, they were a threat." Zack mused to himself and Aerith. "They definately survived the fight, that much I can tell, but I'll have to track em down and figure out why they were after you. I do also want to figure out who gave them that gear: That stuff is no joke." the 1st class soldier continued. Yeah, he was stating the obvious, but it was also important to note that if he thought it was dangerous than chances are that gear was dangerous.
"I'n the morning I'll go and track them down, meanwhile-" Zack began, stopping midsentence when he realized exactly the folly he was about to make. he was about to say you stay here with the pastor and be safe, and you can work on the flowers, but realized absolutely foolhardy such a statement would have been. Nope, not a good idea. If Aerith had been mad at him before (which he bet she was) than she would have been even MORE livid if he said something like that. After a moment of pondering and a nervous chuckle, he added an appropriate ending to his statement.
"Yooooooou can decide if you want to come along or not?" he finished sheepishly
Aerith glanced over her shoulder as she listened to him speak, a small pang of guilt streaking through her. He looked like she’d kicked him or something, but she remained where she in the dirt. Lifting up a few flowers, she began to attach the ends, working more of them into a flower crown in her lap. “I think, you’re the first person I’ve met that I remember.” She searched around in the destroyed flowers, managing to find one that wasn’t terrible but still not going to grow back right. “I’ve met others that have arrived here, though. Like us, here from wherever they came from.”
She turned the circle of flowers around, looking over the links in the chain to make sure they wouldn’t instantly fall apart. “I landed in the mushroom forest, its far south-east.” Landed, as in through the sky quite a ways and into a big mushroom.
“They have really pretty plants there. I’d like to show you them some time." her teeth bit into her lip for a moment as she stood up and walked over to Zack, where he sat on the pew. She set the flowers down on his head, and stepped back to admire her work. Aerith smiled, and swayed as she swung around to sit down on the pew.
She understood what he was saying, what with the armor and the possibility of them coming back for her, for whatever reason they wanted her. Her back pressed against the wood and she lifted a hand to feel the pink ribbon in her hair, feeling reassured that it was still there and hadn’t fallen out in the scuffle. “A real big threat.” She agreed, giving him another sideways look; a stubborn already-decided look.
Honestly, she’d go by herself if he dared say she stay here. “I’m going, we need to give them the what-for in return for all the damage they’ve done.” Plus she wanted to know why they were after her. Maybe it would give her some answers, along the way. Maybe it’d tell her what she needed to clear all the dust out of her head and help her understand.
“If you’re going in the morning, then we can meet up here again?” She asked, her heels landing on the ground as she put her hands on her knees and leaned forward. “It shouldn’t be that hard to find them.” They wanted to catch her, after all. If she stayed with Zack, then they should eventually come and they’d meet up again. Easy-peasy. “Or to take them down again, if we work together.”
Zack listened to Aerith intently, his listening skill being unusually good for someone who had as big a mouth as he had. She seemed pretty chipper about being here, but something definately seemed off: was she hiding something? it was impossible to tell, and Zack dare not call her out on it. Still, when she mentioned the Mushroom forest and wanting to show him the big plants there, a roguish smile crept across his face, one of those telltale signs that he was cooking up an idea. When Aerith was finished stating her
"Maybe rent some kinda RV or something to take out there: spend a week or two just exploring. Who knows what cool stuff we could find there. I myself woke up in the dark woods. Bit of a story to that, but worked my way here pretty quick. As for the two dingbats, sounds like a plan: We'll meet up here tomorrow and ask about where we can find the guys. Although, before that, I would like to take you to breakfast. I do owe it to you at least for dropping in on all your flowers. I'd say I'd owe you more than just that, but we can call it a start. I'll meet you here tomorrow first though." Zack explained. He was quite sure it would be a good way to start the day too.
And there was one other thing he would like to address. As he quietly began to move for the hole in the church that was formerly the door, he did stop, not turning to face Aerith as he spoke again. What he said this time was a little bit more important, yet also perhaps a bit of a touchy subject for both Aerith and himself.
"I know I have no right to ask you to breakfast, especially when I have a lot of explaining to do. If your ready, I suppose I can explain things tomorrow before we go. Its a long story though. I'll tell you if you want to hear it, though I can understand if you don't. I made...A lot of mistakes. Ones I can't take back." Zack explained. His voice had an unusual softness to it, opposite of his normally boisterous and uplifting tone, there was a hint of both compassion and guilt in his voice. Admitting he had made mistakes was hard for Zack. He had made so many in his life, and many others had paid terrible prices for them. Maybe if he had made different decisions and trained to be stronger SOLDIER, a lot of bad things wouldn't have happened. That was a responsibility he knew he was willing to carry. He had to carry.
And he would keep carrying even if he had to give his life again to do so.
Zack quietly made his way to the church door, his mind on exactly how he would have to explain things. For now he just needed some sleep. A lot of things had happened that he needed to process.
((OOC: okay, we can stop here or keep going depending on what you want to do! but this can be a good ending point if you want ^^))
