Sleipnir laughed, softly at first and then louder. He laughed at the absurdity. He laughed at the creature’s audacity. Most of all, he laughed from sheer relief because while the corpse may have implied his master’s demise, Sleipnir understood quite the opposite.
This was no grand and cosmic anomaly, an egi spawned from aether alone. His liege was here. With that one truth, the rest slotted easily into place.
An egi could not exist without his master.
And so it followed that Barnabas Tharmr, Dominant of Odin, still lived for it he did not, then Sleipnir himself would have faced the same nonexistence.
Sleipnir unfolded himself, standing and straightening until he faced the impertinent creature as an equal once more. His eyes gleamed with an unbidden mirth.
”You would toy such with one who had fallen so low?” There was no hint of an accusation to his words, as light and lilting as always. Would Sleipnir not have done the same had their roles reversed? He had quite the history, in fact, with answering the desperate with riddles.
”But one matter remains, and in this, I must insist upon a straight answer. Where did you last lay eyes upon my liege? Tell me this, and I shall be on my way.”
