The further north the more dangerous it would get Aphmau had heard, but she did have a lovely day fishing with Caius a while back. She heard of the Dusk Grotto on an island, but to get there she would need her own ship and with at times things popping into Zephon, perhaps she could find herself a ship as well. Ovjang really liked the idea at least. The three were moving around the coastline, seeing the reddish sand felt a bit bizarre. The puppeteer still was enjoying the adventure a little, her two automatons had two completely opposite look upon this situation.
Ovjang was looking forward to this, but Mnejing didn’t like it at all. If it was up to him, however, they would probably settle somewhere and avoid all danger until they got more used to this world. "Most ghost ships get attacked by pirates," the automaton said as he followed at the back, "so any that even get grounded to shore would likely be set upon by any kinds of villains immediately." He had been voicing his concerns for a while now. "Shush, you really don’t have any feeling for adventure, do you?" Ovjang returned as she skipped forward happily over the sand.
The water flowed over the sand and passed their feet. Between the two automatons was the puppetmaster, Aphmau pondered somewhat quietly along while the two automatons were discussing this situation. A fellow she had encountered mentioned two ships having actually grounded somewhere on shore to the north, so she was hoping to take a peek into them, but a mention of some kind of monster on one had the man flee at the time. Perhaps it was still there, would be even more interesting if it was a ship from home, but she doubted that immensely.
Having traveled for quite a while, far away from the safe haven of the Hero’s Haven, the trio would get sight of the two ships. They were still there, bit close to the forest to both Mnejing’s and Aphmau’s liking as they were close to what was named the ‘Domain of the Lamia’ as she had heard rumors of that area. "Our price in sight," Ovjang chimed as she continued along the coast, Aphmau shook her head, "from this distance its already clear that they’re not from Aht Urhgan," she said before Ovjang rebuffed with a "does it really matter?" the automaton was looking forward to a little adventure.
Mnejing silently followed along as Aphmau moved after Ovjang towards the ships while they looked across the forest in search of any monsters or otherwise. Perhaps there were already pirates here, or perhaps either the witches or creatures that lived here.
Aera had been walking long enough that the beautiful white grains of sand beneath her feet had transitioned to a dark red color. Things had been so serene just a few miles back but now there was a different vibe. An energy in the air, something darker. But that was her purpose for being out here, to help cull the monster threat that lurked along the coast.
While she wasn't affiliated with the other "hero" companies of the area, the locals hadn't objected to hiring a lone mercenary sort, though it had taken some convincing on her part. Aera didn't look to be the "fighting" type and she knew that. Thankfully her Trident was a potent show-and-tell.
Dressed in her usual holy white garb, she was approaching what looked like a couple ships, floating by their lonesome amid a backdrop of tropical trees and shrubbery. As she got closer, she noticed another figure moving toward them. Another woman? And two...servants? Mechanical contraptions of some sort, she was certain.
Was it someone on vacation who'd gotten lost? Or maybe another mercenary? Or an explorer? There was an ill stir among the trees and so Aera picked up her pace. She'd be well seen by the stranger as she pressed forward, closing the distance with rushed steps as she called out to the other.
Walking in a calm manner forward Aphmau did not take any notice of anything out of the ordinary thus far, she felt something was there, but that was merely a feeling. Though, still she was displeased with how close the forest was and the chances of lamia. Though, having heard of something on the ship, she was certain they would encounter something along the way. But with her focus on the ship, she was more surprised when a voice reached her from a different direction. Though she did not exactly jump, she was a little startled while looking for the source.
Someone was stepping in a rush towards her, though in a hurry this lady in dress did not seem to be the type to her to be out here in the first appearance. Mnejing was closely watching her while having turned her way, still standing straightened without taking any form or stance. “Ah, hello!” Aphmau called back while holding up a hand in a short waving motion, greeting her calmly, “oh, no no no, not lost. I'm something of a mercenary,” she continued with a small smile. She hoped this lady wasn't here to stab her or something. She definitely didn't have the look, but since she was asking her if she was lost, she assumed the lady herself knew where she was.
“We're out here to investigate these ships,” Aphmau said while turning towards the two ships and pointing at them. As she had turned towards the ships, her eyes blinked and slowly went down towards her other automaton. A red little form was slowly starting to move somewhat far away and Aphmau made note that this was Ovjang. “A-ah! Ovjang!” she called before running after the red automaton. The automaton had continued skipping forward while Aphmau and Mnejing had stopped.
Mnejing slowly looked sideways towards Aphmau running and Ovjang in the distance, “I'm afraid that further greetings will have to wait,” Mnejing said as he refocused on Aera, “would you mind following us for a moment otherwise I suggest waiting here for us?” he continued in a serious tone. The white and gold automaton didn't move after Aphmau and Ovjang at present, but remained still and watching what Aera would do. “I'll be following Lady Aphmau, so if you feel inclined to come, do know our info told us there was some manner of creature on one of the ships,” he continued and then started to move after his two companions.
Well, the other woman was civil, at the least. The stranger greeted her in kind and explained she, too, was a mercenary, or "something of one," which was good enough in explaining why she was out here alone. Alone save for the mechanical devices accompanying her.
Aera glanced at the ships when the other woman brought attention to them. It seemed one of the metal contraptions had continued on without the other two, as it was far ahead in the direction of the ships. The woman hurried off to catch up, and the remaining metal one addressed Aera directly.
Huh. She hadn't expected it to speak. But it was friendly enough. And it even put a name to the stranger's face. Lady Aphmau. And there was evidently some kind of creature on one of the ships?
"Where there is one, there are often many," Aera said, more thinking aloud than anything else. "I will join your Lady's investigation." She followed the mechanical-something as it went to re-join its companions.
"What is your name, then?" she asked. "Are you related somehow to the other metalwork that the Lady has set after?" She realized after her own questions that she hadn't given her own name. She'd been so preoccupied with assessing the situation that she'd forgotten.
"Ah, my name is Aera, by the way. I am somewhat of a mercenary. Not quite the cape-and-bladework sort, but I take on my share of quests."
Mnejing nodded when Aera spoke her thoughts, continuing his way after his two companions that had moved on ahead. He could see in the distance that Ovjang did come slowly to a halt after it noted Aphmau rushing after her. "I would be Mnejing," he replied on the question, "Ovjang and I are the personal automatons of the Court Puppetmaster of Aht Urhgan, Lady Aphmau," he pointed towards the red automaton in the distance when voicing him and Ovjang, then motioned to Aphmau with the name. "So you could essentially say we are related, yes," he nodded.
The explanation on being a mercenary brought Mnejing's attention back to how they were currently more mercenaries as well, "at present we function as mercenaries as well like Lady Aphmau said. While I would have liked to say we have come for this reason to these ships, our initial hopes were to find a functional ship for our own," he explained in a calm manner, "Ovjang is not a very good influence, I would say." He considered telling how they were on a pirate ship before they ended up in this world, but refrained from doing so.
Looking ahead, it seemed the other two waited for them to catch up on them, though Ovjang was motioning a bit from side to side as if impatient. "So as you can tell, Lady Aphmau is a puppetmaster, so not the cape-and-bladework sort either," he said with Aphmau smiling a bit nervously, uncertain what all was said. "Well, there are a lot of different ways," she gave with a shrug, "are you here for similar reasons?" she asked and started to move on as well. Now the group was together again.
"I wonder what sort of things we will find on board the ship," the red automaton said as she skipped forward, it sounded very cheerfily as it continued, "is the new miss," "her name's Aera," Mnejing interjected, "any good with dangerous foes and monsters?" the red automaton asked in a cheerful voice, "I do wonder if we can find some pirates." Mnejing shook his head at this. Aphmau clapped her hands, "well, we're here to investigate, not start a fight if we can help it, so keep it in, please."
The mechanical ones had names, quite the exotic sort too. Aera commited them to memory, making special note of the Lady's title. A court puppetmaster? She had never heard of Aht Urhgan, though, and so she didn't have proper context to discern if the other woman was royalty or other bearing. Hopefully addressing her as "Lady" would be sufficient...
If the automaton spoke truly, then their group was looking for a functional vessel for their own. Could they not simply purchase one? "I see," Aera acknowledged, her voice soft and thoughtful. She could not judge their circumstances.
With the Lady's question, Aera perked up. "Ah, well, there were a few locals south of here that requested I look into a monster sighting. Given that your sources told you similar regarding the ships, it seems we share a goal."
There was no predicting what could be hiding in areas like these, and so perhaps their combined might was a fated arrangement. Aera, at least, was not choosy in her company so long as she could accomplish her mission and keep others safe.
One of the mechanical assistants asked if she would fare well against monsters, and despite the Lady's request they not stir trouble, Aera felt compelled to reassure the automaton that she would not be a liability on their quest. "I can hold my own," she said simply.
Though it was also true that within this world she had observed several creatures whose claws she'd only barely missed. Hopefully the rumored ilk upon the ships was not anything beyond their ability...
"Have you any details on the creature?" Aera asked. "My client mentioned one who favors the water, a long tail and fangs. Though I could only venture a guess as to size and number." Sometimes the reports of the townsfolk varied enough that even the supposed details became unreliable.
