If his companions were in any position to be helped then it would do them no good to sit around worrying. And if they weren’t in any such position…

The thought twisted terribly in his stomach, but he tried to push it back. Yuffie made for a good distraction.
”Do you know of anyone who has turned into a tree?” he asked. ”I’ve heard of many evil magicks, but not that one.”
Once, he would have thought it a silly question. Since then, he had seen all manner of horrors. He had no doubts that some fiend or villainous dark elf might take pleasure in transfiguring the slothful on old secluded roads. Or perhaps it was merely another of her many strange expressions. Either way, it would keep his thoughts from wandering elsewhere.
”I wouldn’t mind a bed, I suppose, though I don’t necessarily need one. A tent would do just as well.” Verik quickened his pace to keep up with the determined trodding of the bird. The beast was independent, it seemed, and not particularly well tamed. ”Have you been to town? If this is the past then it must truly be a marvel.” He’d grown up on old tales of the world at its prime -- of magnificent cities bathed in magic and technology and the light of the crystal. He’d met the ancient Lufenians who had once mastered the skies themselves. He’d often thought he’d have liked to seen those days when the kingdoms did not struggle so terribly with drought and famine and gale winds. He’d never imagined that such a day might come to pass.
”And you hail from another future, perhaps one even farther than mine. I never thought I’d become so entrenched in the cogs of time. It boggles the mind.”
