Jessie was still staring at the purple man/octopus beast and trying to comprehend what was happening when Terra flew into action. At first it seemed like she might attack him out of nowhere so Jessie took a step back instinctively. Her hand reached for her gun. What did Terra know about this creature? She’d have to help her new friend after all! [break][break]
But just as suddenly as the green-haired girl panicked, she seemed to relax and apologize. Jessie, however, kept a wary hand on her belt. How many purple octopuses had Terra met? Was this a common species from where she was from? Really, was that so surprising with all the strange folk Jessie had met both in Gaia and in Zephon? She was still confused and wary, but as Terra greeted the strange newcomer, she decided to relax as well. [break][break]
Terra gave her a look that bordered on a grin. Jessie wasn’t entirely sure what she was trying to convey but she took her new friend’s lead and gave a little wave to their companion. Maybe octopus men had different naming conventions too. “Hey, uh-Justa, I’m Jessie.” Then Terra took charge. It was impressive to watch the sweet woman turn into a leader, promising to keep Jessie safe. She smiled a little and nodded. “I’ll stay close and watch your back. We got this!” [break][break]
Justa the octopus started telling a story about orphans who needed the relics. Jessie raised an eyebrow but nodded. “Sure, I’m mostly here for the adventure and the mystery. If you really need some of the relics, we’ll help you get them.” She turned back to Terra, ready to enter the foreboding tomb! But, the green-haired girl seemed unable to move. The mud had here well and truly stuck. Jessie was glad for her flat-soled boots. But then, she couldn’t fly. [break][break]
She smiled warmly and reached out to help Terra, but before she could, a purple tentacle snaked out and worked to pull her out. It seemed innocent enough… Jessie helped Justa unstick Terra from the mud. But what was that noise he was making? It sounded almost like a giggle. This was going to be an interesting adventure, to say the least. [break][break]
It didn’t take long before the three of them found their way through the gates into the forgotten city of the damned. Forlorn howls drifted across the humid wind. And all around them, the undead shambled and moaned. Jessie aimed for their heads with both her gun and her lightning materia, but despite however many they took out, still more filled their place. Thankfully, they were not too powerful on their own. Only in their great numbers did these undead pose an issue for the three adventurers. [break][break]
Jessie fought back a heave of nausea as they neared the temple. The smell of death was all around them here in Metaia, but here, close to the temple, it was even worse. Cloying and thick, it clung to them like a disease. She swallowed hard and looked at the locked iron gates that barred their way. More undead shambled beyond, dark and formless in the shadows. Jessie stepped to the side, finding a secluded section of fencing mostly obscured by fallen pillars. She crouched behind it and motioned for her companions to do the same, though she had doubts that Justa found fit very well. “What should we do?” she whispered. “There’s so many that way...but I don’t see another choice?”
