One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
This place was still a disaster, he had to be up front about that. Prompto did the best he could, but at some point you really needed a professional to keep the place clean. Well, less keep it clean and more clean it up after Sephiroth and whatever the hell those two other clowns had managed to accomplish. Gods, the place was wrecked, there was a crater outside, and rumors of freakshows going on. Not that he had any real right to talk about freakshows, considering not only the type of company that he was, but the kind of company that he tended to keep. Cassandra tried to make a play at being normal but, well, even she had her quirks. In truth though, part of him missed the others as well. That full group of adventurers. The Scions, too. He wondered what they were up to, at this point in time.
Once again he found himself trying to remove some of the debris in the building. Brushing away glass shards, trying to clean up after the elements that managed to find their way through a leaky roof. Removing splinters and shattered timber from the establishment. Calculating total damage to figure out what would need to be repaired and how much gil. He mentally kicked himself for spending it all on his wardrobe, but he'd much rather not have to wear his armor all the time, even if he wore it now. He figured it would work out. Once he managed to turn in Sephiroth, that other silver haired samurai he was with in Sonora, and the blonde man that blew up a chunk of Provo, he was pretty sure that he would have the money to repair everything and live comfortable for a while!
A man could dream.
Unfortunately, dreams come to an end, especially when you've got someone at the door. "Yeah, yeah one moment." He remarked, as he carefully stepped over a fallen beam. He stopped to take a look at the whole through the roof. Right, the sun was out, still day. He'd been having trouble keeping track of that lately, so engrossed was he in trying to get moving forward. The beam itself also presented a problem. Had to find a way to get that out, get a new one made and installed. Gods this was going to be a nightmare to get done. He paused for a moment, swirling his fingers over his temples as he went to open the door.
Since old Matoya had rudely been moved to Zephon, she had managed to move her bones across the world - be it with a hint of magic and a bit of luck. She had to. She needed to see how different this world was for herself. She needed to feel its magic humming in the air and beneath her feet. She did not like a fish out of its watery environment, nor living in ignorance. So, she did not stay put. Besides, how else would she find a place to carve herself a corner of this world to be left in peace?
She enjoyed the sights of the Kahiko Valley and how it piqued her curiosity on this lost civilization. What had caused its downfall and where did its residents go? She took a breath and thought about it. The ghosts of Headstone Forest tried to bother the crone, but she told them to bugger off with a sharp eye and a wave of her stick. But it was there she found two toads to awaken and become Poroggo - her toady servants.
Finally, she came to Provo and some bold adventurer took the name Rising Stones. It made her wonder who could come up with such a name other than a Scion. She hummed thoughtfully to herself as the Poroggo followed by her side. Both carried a large stick for a staff. The sight gathered stares, as she approached this ‘Rising Stones’. A soft frown one her lips and her gaze hidden under her hood.
She wrapped her staff on the door. She was greeted with a “Yeah, yeah one moment.” The indignity! No one made Matoya wait. They lacked respect and Matoya certainly would not tolerate that. The Poroggo seemed to sense her intensifying anger like an aura of miasma. They raised their staffs and beat open the weakened door with balls of water. The doors flew open, and she caught Alex making a certain hand gesture at his temples.
“Still have not learned manners, I see.” Her words were icy. There was almost a cluck of indignity from her tongue as she cooly walked. She looked at the mess of a building. “Making me wait and then not bothering to pick up the mess.” She hummed judgmentally, not exactly pleased that this was what the new ‘Rising Stones’ looked like. “Too busy with your wardrobe than whatever elbow grease this needs. Are you trying to attract the derelicts to this hovel?” She stood there staff down and arm behind her hunched back.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
As Alex went to open the doors, they went flying off the hinges. It wasn't pretty as they flew past him, slamming into the counter. The angle at which they collided causing them to flip over, bringing their bottoms crashing down hard in the shelves behind the counter, snapping them in two, splinters of wood flying everywhere. This then also had the reaction of the bottles of alcohol beginning to slide down, slipping out in the middle as they crashed to the wooden floor, the sounds of breaking glass repeating one after the other as their contents oozed onto the now stained floor. "The door--The door was one of--" He squeaked. One of the only things that hadn't been utterly trashed by Sephiroth's fight with that blonde prick. There was a slight choking noise from him as he looked over his shoulder at the damage done. He began to shake, Matoya's scolding hitting him, but getting momentarily buried under a building fury. That'd come later.
Extenuating circumstances often bring up different kinds of reactions. In a normal interaction, Alex would have been perfectly content to remain quiet and let the Scions tactfully, and respectfully handle Matoya. Shoot, under normal circumstances, he'd probably be a lot more accomodating of the old witch himself. Master Matoya and all that. However, between his shop being wrecked, Cassandra bailing on him to go work for a rival company, and having to bottle everything up and behave himself around Ryne so she didn't get sad like she was wont to do, it was only a matter of time before something, anything, pushed him over the edge. There was a slight sound of building rage. A warning of the storm that was about to make landfall. Really, it probably wasn't a good idea. The last thing Matoya of all people needed, was a surefire way to press someone's buttons, assuming she didn't turn him into a frog or something.
And then his voice came out as a roar. "Did you ever think about speaking up?! 'Hey it's granny, open up, nyeh!' would have worked just as well! Between you, and Sephiroth, and that blonde prick, does my place just look like a bullseye?! Why don't we just throw a Flare at it, really finish it off!" He hunched over, entreating dark forces as he raised up his arms, giving his best Matoya impression. Of course, the obvious question eventually came in the midst of some colorful ranting as Alex boiled over at long last. It was probably good for him on some level. Maybe not physically depending on how things rolled, but the guy was probably long overdue for letting out some pent up rage! "How'd you even--" He stopped himself, rubbing his temples again. He already knew she didn't have a place to stay. That much was obvious. She wouldn't be here, wrecking his shop, if she did.
He exhaled, inhaled, and exhaled again, trying to get the raging dragon back under control. "Sorry, it's been... a really, really long couple weeks." He sighed. Her scolding starting to finally get to him in some way, namely that he remembered her words, more than anything. "Still haven't learned, you say, though, that's good. So, it sounds like you remember me, then. This world does things to you. Makes you forget." He exhaled again, feeling himself starting to come down from that rush of anger. "Well, I'm guessing you're a recent arrival, seeing as you're here. I'm gonna guess you've got questions." Even still, he was happy to see her, even if she blasted him with magic or something.
Alex seemed to fret and squeak like a frightened mouse who’s den had been distrubed. Pathetic really. Matoya watched him cooly as he seemed to sift through his emotions. It was almost as if he was running through the stages of grief in but a moment’s time. Matoya found herself silently waiting for the torrent of tongue lashing she would receive. And receive she did. She did nothing until he was done with his tirade. “Are you done acting like a child throwing a tantrum?” Icy words from the master that would not bother to give him the satisfaction of being upset. She only gave him that vague disappointed look, much like a parent would to a child. [break][break] In a way, it felt even worse. There was silence between them as if the room dropped several degrees. She tilted her head down to look at her frogs. “Go make yourself useful.” She ordered them, and they started to move, unsure what useful was. Matoya gave a sigh. “Clean up the mess you two made.” Her voice was full of irritation. The two Poroggo hopped to it, not bothering to third guess her orders. [break][break] She lowered her head and her arm rested against her aching back. “There are a few questions that I don’t already have the answer to.” She already knew about the amnesia and the mysterious circumstances of people popping up in this world. She had traveled all the way from Aljana, and if she had not picked up anything since then, she had no reason to be a master scholar. [break][break]
Also, there was the underlying suggestion in his words that made it sound like she needed help. Something that made her bristle. “Make no mistake. It is not I that needs help.” Matoya never needed any crucial assistance and she was not in the habit of asking for it either. Her eyes took in the condition of his place. “I am merely here to sate my curiosity on why this place had the same name as the one on Hydaelyn. I see why now. You couldn’t let go of it.” A soft, almost smile, touched her lips. “And if that’s the case, you best take care of it.” She harrumphed for a moment, shaking her head. “Tis you that needs aid, judging by your outburst and the place’s condition. But if you prefer to keep a sharp tongue with me...” She half turned to leave and, if she did, her assistance would go with her. She would not tolerate being insulted and talked to. She would rather the place fall down around him. Though, he seemed to calmer now than when he first entered.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Fortunately, or unfortunately. Alex has little shame. Thus, the withering look of a disappointed parent who considered their child a complete and utter failure didn't really affect him like it would have most people. Plus, it was something that he was used to, something he'd experienced before. Look who's laughing now, though! Still, he rolled with it, letting go over his back like water from a nice, hot shower. Man he could really use one right now. He grinned slightly, lifting a single finger as he placed a hand on his hip. "I'm done for now. Trust me, when you live a life where everyone depends on you to be the adult in the room and keep the monsters out of the world's closet, you take any chance you get to act like a brat." If ever there was anything that he appreciated about hanging around Hildibrand, it was that he could actually relax for a few minutes.
But eh, no one ever wanted to hear him whine, so he wouldn't.
He twisted a little from side to side at the act of kindness. At least she was sending her familiars to do some of the helping. There was a soft muttering of gratitude as the frogs got to work. "Thank you." It's quiet, but her hearing's still sharp... he thinks. So he's sure she heard it. Although he shot her a rather deadpan look at how she bristled. Really, what was it with people from Sharlayan? Was it all just some sort of cloak and dagger shit? Couldn't be, right? Alphinaud was way too naive. "I don't even know what I said to get that reaction. I think you're reading into things that aren't there." He remarked with a minor sigh as he shrugged. "I swear, between you and the Scions, was Sharlayan just a land of cloaks, daggers, and doublespeak? I have questions about that place. None of them involve a mystical sense of curiosity and wonder."
Like how Thancred even got in. Wasn't that a magical nation? The only magic he ever saw Thancred use were glamours to make himself look younger. Really, seeing him emerge from the forest was a shock, but with him unable to use his aether anymore, he figured it was just how Thancred Waters actually looked without a glamour.
'Course this was backfiring, she was starting to leave. And he didn't want that. Aside from the fact that she was useful, she was also another link to home and a friend, so he waved her back over, shoulders slumping. She really knew how to drive a hard bargain. And he knew that she would actually leave if he let her. "But you're right. I do want some link to home. I haven't found a way back, yet." There were unspoken words, of course. Unspoken feelings. Did he even want to leave? Did he want to return to a world where he "kept the monsters out of the world's closet" as he had put it? "And of course, if you're willing to give it, then I'll gladly take your aid." In truth, he didn't think he did. He rather liked it here.
Wrecked shop aside.
Alex looked around at all the damage. Now he could add "needs new doors" on top of everything else. Where was Ryne going to sleep without having to worry about things like drafts now? ["Aside from helping to clean this place up after it got wrecked, I'm looking for people. So, that Crystal Ball of yours would be handy." He was pretty sure it had a different name, but at least describing the object would help narrow it down. Which... "Actually, even better, think you could show me how to make one?" And that got him excited. Sure, he was sure Matoya would help him regardless of how much she huffed and puffed, but hey, if it meant he'd bother her less, then what could it hurt, right?
Matoya rolled her eyes at him. Matoya knew all about needing to be the problem solver in the room. That is the only reason people sought her out anymore. And she was pretty sure he was a brat all the time. No real adult in THAT spine. But he could live in whatever belief about himself he wanted. She got what she wanted and her curiosity had been quenched. [break][break] Thaliak grant her patience right now, lest she piss in his river. [break][break] Then she heard him utter a thank you. She was tempted to mess with him and claim her hearing was no good. Make him say it agian. But he kept pressing on with annoyance. It seemed she pressed some sort of button with him. “You aren’t wrong. The Sharlayan government were a bunch of spineless cloaks that wanted to censor knowledge to their benefit. They took no action against the outside world and ran when their knowledge amounted to nothing.” Cowards and sods. She spit on them. That is why the Circle of Knowing was enacted in complete rebellion to the government and to use knowledge to save Eorzea. [break][break] But she’d rather not waste more of her breath. [break][break] She stopped in her tracks and looked over her shoulder. She gave a soft sigh at his comment of not finding a way back. In truth, Matoya felt there may be no way back until the higher powers that brought them here deemed fit. Which, honestly, could be never. She minds as well get comfortable in the meantime. “Very well.” She croaked, turning to face him again. [break][break] “Crystal eye.” She corrected, a bit annoyed. She raised a brow at him, leaning against her staff. “Who do you seek?” She didn’t tell him yes or no. What he was looking for would determine whether she allowed him its use. “And no. I cannot just show you how to make one.” Her head shook at the thought. “To find a crystal this large without imperfection is truly rare. And who is to say their properties are the same. I would have to examine each one myself.” Sounded like a lot of time wasted on both ends. [break][break] “What I can do is provide servants and brooms to assist in the repairs. If you get me the supplies, that is.” She watched him cooly for a moment before looking at the mess of the place again. “Of course, in exchange, I would like someone to come with me to secure a grotto of my own.” Far away from people. “I have my eye on the Fractured Plains.” It seemed an ideal place for her to get comfortable.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
Alex corrected himself after her further bristling. This lady is such a grouch. Surely she'd make for excellent company for Prompto. "Crystal Eye." He said. Honestly, there was the temptation to have Prompto handle her for her request but, well, he wasn't that sadistic. Prompto would be roasted alive. It wasn't lost on the Warrior of Light just how much of an awkward duck he was. In all honesty, he knew of others like that. He wasn't, mind you. He was more of a dumbass when he was younger. Bristling at the absolute slightest provocation instead of bottling it all up like a reasonable adult. But it was still sad that she wouldn't help him get his own Crystal Eye. Why give a man a fish when you could teach him to fish? But, well, between her offers, there was her side of the bargain. Of course, that was just how Matoya operated, but really? Another dingy cave?
"First things first." He remarked. "For your offer, you can consider it done, but..." THere was an agreement in there. He'd do it if she really wanted another cave, it was just... "Are you sure you want another cave? You can stay here, you know. Or if you really want to be alone, we can build you a cozy cabin or something." He'd always wondered why she lived in one. Was it really out of pure preference? He'd always thought it was to hide or something. Did she really prefer caves? It'd be more expensive, technically. The man did have botany experience, he could help get the materials together. Granted, getting a carpenter might be an issue... and a decorator, but he was still willing to try.
He rubbed the back of his neck, looking around. "Admittedly it's sorely lacking the comforts of home right now, but, you're always welcome here. You know that, right?" It was an honest invitation. Considering this was a completely different world, she was free to stay if she really wanted. Not that the offer didn't exist in their world, but still. She might have to deal with some other company for a bit. Ryne and Prompto could be a handful, but, well, they could probably use someone to give them some grief. He figured though that out of the two, Ryne would adapt to Matoya faster.
Matoya laid out her terms to him. Though she made conditions, she always thought they were fair and never beyond one’s capability. Truly, if someone wanted something badly enough, they would show their commitment by accepting her terms. Otherwise, the crone felt they were undeserving of her help, as if they were seeking an easy solution to their problem. [break][break] Alexander did not deny her request. He simply questioned her reward. She shook her head. He meant her well, but she had no desire for such a mundane housing. She had grown fond of her isolation and living within the earth made her much more attuned to the magic of it. Plus, the more out of the ordinary she lived, the less she’d be bothered. “I know my preferences and my work requires certain conditions.” She said with, perhaps, a hint of a smile. “Your consideration has been noted.” [break][break] “I know that I am welcome here,” she admitted. Even if she and the warrior of light butted heads, they knew they could rely on the other. And asking him for an escort to the cave also discretely demonstrated a trust for him to know where she was. Something she did not grant everyone. Finding her was half the trial. Also, she was too proud to live on the kindness of others. She would make her own way. “I will stay here until this place is in working order again. So spare me your thoughts on my well being,” she conceded this much. Perhaps, during her stay, she could find a library to pick up the lore of this new world. [break][break]
She cleared her throat again staring up at him. “Are you going to tell me who you're seeking with the crystal eye? Or what?” She didn’t have all day. There was work to be done. Brooms, toads, and quite a bit of cleaning were in order.

One Brings Shadow, One Brings Light
to this riddle, all souls are tied
He couldn't help but give an amused snort accompanied by a half smile. "Ah, so that's where Y'shtola gets it from." Sometimes he wondered if Y'shtola went out of her way to kill any kind of bonding moments. Maybe it was just something she got from the master, then? "Still, I'll endeavor to make sure you're comfortable while you stay. Out of the cities, Torensten's the most magic oriented, but you've never really come across as one for rules and systems." Matoya at the university? Oh that'd be rich.
Still, she pressed him for who he was looking for, and he'd oblige. The first two were obvious, raising two fingers. "The first two are friends of a friend. Ignis Scientia and Gladiolus Amicitia. I said I'd help find them so, yeah." He was kind of roped into that. But now that he thought about it, were they even in this world? He supposed he'd be finding out. If he could track them down, though, well, they'd make fine additions to his little adventurer's guild. He already had Prompto and he was fairly confident he could bribe Noctis, so swaying the others might make it easier. Plus, thanks to Prompto, he knew what they looked like and could recognize them if needed. Probably.
He raised a third finger. Really this was the last one that he could think of. Yeah finding what Noct was up to now would be nice, but he had--Oh, oh right. "The third is that Sephiroth guy I mentioned. Aside from the fact that he's partly responsible for," He gestured vaguely to the area around them. The wrecked shop and all that. He was sure Matoya would get it. "Someone matching his description was also involved in a rampage in a city called Sonora, and he tried to destroy his own world. From what I understand, he failed in the latter by a thread." At least that was how Aerith had painted it. It had taken all of her friends to stop him, as she told that story. There were questions. Why just her friends, where was she during all this? And for someone who insisted that she had no real ties, why was that so... blatantly false?
Still, someone who almost blew up his own world was dangerous. "Naturally, I'd really like to see to that sort of person sooner rather than later." He crossed his arms, losing himself in thought for a moment. It was so much like Dalamud. Thoughts of finding Ardyn were there, too. But Ardyn had gone completely silent. In fact, he only knew the man existed from what others had told him. There'd been no real reports, nothing. It was as if he vanished into thin air. For now, he'd move on. If Ardyn started moving again, Matoya could find him. Probably. But there were others he could think of. Mostly. He doubted he could be found, but "And while I'd love to find the guy who attacked him and was chiefly the cause of,"
Again, he gestured vaguely around them before shrugging and shaking his head. "I'm not sure if 'blonde prick who wrecked my shop and attacked Sephiroth' would work for your Crystal Eye." Oh it was narrow, but he doubted it'd work without names. The idea of looking for the Ascians was something to consider, but... part of him wasn't sure he wanted to know, and even then, he figured listing off all their names would test Matoya's patience more than he already might.
Y’shtola was indeed selfless. She had even gotten herself into some forbidden magic to save her comrades. The silly girl didn’t know when to call it quits. She was indeed as stubborn as her old teacher. “I am surprised she sat still long enough to even learn that from me.” Her words were a scoff, but there was a tone of endearment in her eyes. She waved her staff dismissively. “Some rules are meant to hinder learning. Sometimes they need to be broke.” Learning in a university setting she could handle, it was whether or not the students and professors there could tolerate butting heads with her. And she loved to butt heads.
[break][break] The first two seemed simple enough. To find lost friends for someone, it seemed to be a common endeavor here on Zephon. Though she frowned at the third, she eyed the disaster he waved his hands around here. If this is all this Sephiroth did then he was lucky considering the extent of damage the man did in the past. “I understand your request.” Yet, there was hesitation in her voice. And then he listed a fourth and her lips furrowed into her sunken cheeks.
[break][break] What did he think the eye was? A light box where you can just turn it on and go? A toy? Honestly, he had no respect for relics.
[break][break] “But the Crystal Eye is a crystal of light. It’s power is dangerous to use on a constant basis. In addition, you must know the person well enough to peer through the aether to find them and not be lost to its flow. I do not know these people, but if you wish to try with your Echo, then I have no qualm in lending it.” A fair warning. Its usage was not to be taken lightly, even if the Baldesion student, Krile, made it look so easy. “But it sounds like you are looking for more trouble than what it's worth.”
[break][break] She shook her head. “Well, if you still want a go, where do I safely place the crystal?”
