I'm gonna keep on keeping on the only way I know how
Prompto gave his name. It was a simple name, he thought, the kind that you don’t think too much about. Apparently he’d been wrong about that because as soon as he’d said it, the man was squinting at him. After a moment’s thought, the man asked the question that turned his whole world on its head.
”You, uh. You know a Noctis by any chance?”
”You know Noct?” Prompto didn’t even wait to hear the rest. He couldn’t. The words burst out of him the second he heard that name. That glorious, wonderful name! Noctis was here! Was this where he had gone when he’d disappeared into after the crystal? Was this where Ardyn had sent him?
Was this where Ardyn had sent them all?
That wasn’t a good thought, but Prompto didn’t even care. If Noctis was here then Prompto could find him. He could save him and then they could…
Well, he didn’t know what they could do from there, but it didn’t matter. They could be together. That was all Prompto cared about.
”I’ve been looking everywhere for him! I thought-!” Prompto swallowed and rubbed at his eye. ”Where is he? Can you take me to him?”
The ground rumbled and then roared as hard stone burst from the escalators in a kind of uneven wall. Prompto yelped, throwing up his hands on instinct. Right. They were in a fight. Get out first. Find Noct second.
Ask questions about how his new friend could do any of this never.
”Alex. Okay.” Prompto tried for a smile. ”Adventurer. That’s cool.”
Deep breaths. Noctis needs you.
Didn’t matter that Alex was shooting jagged stone from nowhere, shattering the window like it was nothing. Didn’t matter that Prompto had to shield his eyes from the glass dust and his stomach was turning as he caught onto what Alex was about to do. Didn’t matter that they were three stories above hard concrete. Nope didn’t matter at all. He’d get rid of his guns with a flick of his wrist, put his hands to the side, and edge towards the gaping hole that had once been a window even though he really, really didn’t want to.
He looked down and felt his head spin. ”Heheh. Isn’t there another way? I don’t know about-”
Alex grappling shot himself out the window. Then the rope bound itself around Prompto’s chest. Prompto barely had a second for the horrible realization to hit before he was yanked out with the force of a train and all he could do was scream. And he did. A lot. He heard his own wailing echo over the rooftops as he wished he had his arms free but couldn’t do a single thing and he closed his eyes, forcing back the bile that wanted out of his throat and wouldn’t take no for an answer.
Alex let out a soft laugh of amusement. Granted, it might make things more difficult with all the racket, but Rescuing someone never got old if only because they almost always screamed like that. It was over in a flash, went off without a hitch, mostly. Prompto didn't exactly land on his feet but Alex was pretty sure that nothing had been broken, at least. The Warrior of Light was only barely able to suppress the smirk when he let Prompto know "You can open your eyes now." The tethers vanished as memories came back to him from his adventuring days. He really had to start doing that again with other people. He'd forgotten how enjoyable the reactions were. But that only bought them time. They still had to find a way out of the city, and a place to lay low long enough for the heat to fall off. Could they simply make the jump or was he going to have to keep Rescuing Prompto as they went?
He crossed his arms. Right, he had questions he needed to answer. And questions that needed answering. But poor kid was obviously so excited, which told Alex that he did indeed have the right Prompto, at least. That meant that now he needed to find... Gladiolus and Ignis, was it? "So, to answer your questions. I do. He's a friend of mine - for my part. He got stranded in my world for a bit before heading back to his fiancee. At least I think it was her." A blonde woman in a long, flowing white dress. Truth was he was kind of envious of Noctis for a moment. That woman had been beautiful beyond beautiful. But he coughed before he sheepishly admitted. "He uh, he doesn't remember me, but that's something I've been noticing a lot since coming here. Before you worry, I'm not you, so I'd be surprised if he forgot you and the others." Scratching his cheek.
And then came the part where he needed to let Prompto down. Yeah, he wondered how well this was going to go over as he internally cringed. The poor kid just seemed so excited. Kinda like a puppy when the owner comes home. "As for the where, that gets a bit tricky. Last I saw him, he was in Torensten. We were talking about going after this guy named Ardyn, who apparently is also here. Then it's almost as if he changed his mind and ran off to do other things. I haven't seen him since. If my time with him in my world is anything to go by, I'm going to guess he's fishing and camping." That change had been so sudden, too, it was weird. Caius was off doing his own thing, making his own name. Good luck, man, you're gonna need it. You have no idea what's waiting for you.
Punching the palm of his hand with a fist though, Alex did perk up. Maybe this was a good opportunity. "But I am starting up an Adventuring Guild in Provo. If I know him like I think I do, he'll probably show up at some point looking for work. Would also give you a chance to get some cash." Sales pitch, go! Plus, aside from giving Prompto stability, it did have some boons for Alex, as well. Namely, use Prompto as bait to get Noctis to sign on, and then they'd really be talking. They should probably get moving soon, got places to go, enemies to flee, that sort of thing. But, there were other matters. Could be dealt with on the way.
"Now, Prompto, do you know anything about Ardyn? If you do, tell me everything. He wasn't the only one taking this threat seriously, was he?!
I'm gonna keep on keeping on the only way I know how
-for Noctis!
Prompto gasped as he hit the roof tiling, knowing enough to roll on impact as he tumbled to a stop flat on his back where he groaned, breathing hard. He was bruised. Definitely bruised. And scraped, he thought, across his cheek. The shingles were like sandpaper under him, and for a moment, he let himself just lay there, watching the stars until they stopped spinning. Then he closed his eyes, swallowed, and tried to force himself upright.
”Piece of cake.” Prompto smiled unsteadily as he got to his feet, swaying slightly. The man, Alex, was watching him with his arms crossed, playing it totally cool and like they hadn’t just hurdled over certain doom. Prompto guessed he was like Noctis in that way. He could fight in the air, and he was way, way used to it.
Speaking of Noctis.
”A friend?” Prompto tilted his head, eyebrows furrowed. ”So did you meet here or…?” It sounded like he did, but also like he didn’t. ”Your...world. And back to Luna?” Now that didn’t make sense at all, and it didn’t make sense in a way that twisted around in his stomach. Luna was dead. Noctis knew that. So why…?
”No offense, but I’m around Noct like. All the time. And I’ve never seen you before.” Prompto crossed his arms and sighed. ”But if you say it’s Noct then it’s Noct. And I’ve got to find him.”
He wasn’t worried about that whole ’not remembering’ thing. It was Noctis. Of course he’d remember him! They were best bros, after all, and nothing would change that. Not crystals or worlds or…
Ardyn.
”Wait. Wait, wait, wait. Ardyn’s here?” Prompto stared at him, momentarily struck out of his thoughts. ”No. No way. He’s supposed to be back-!” Back where they were all supposed to be. His throat tightened. ”No way. Nuh-uh. This isn’t happening!” Prompto took a few steps back, rubbed at the side of his head, and tried to keep his breaths steady. Ardyn could be anywhere. In fact, he could have been watching them right now. That sounded like him. Prompto swallowed and looked at Alex with a renewed urgency.
”We have to find Noct. Now. He’s not safe, and I-!”Have to protect him. Prompto bit his tongue. ”I’ll tell you all about it. Really. Everything you want to know. But first we need to get out of here. He could be anywhere. He could be watching, and if he finds Noct, he’ll-!”
He couldn’t finish. Instead, he cut off into a kind of whimpering groan. ”Come on. Please. We need to go like. Right now.”
Ah, so the Ardyn button was a thing. Alex didn't say a word, he just let Prompto go on and on. Rather, as Prompto continues to go on and on, he could only think one thing to himself. Huh. It started as a small observation, really, watching him just fly into a sheer panic was rather telling. It reminded him of himself, shackled by sheer paranoia at the destructive power of Zenos and Emet-Selch. Well, more Zenos than Emet-Selch if he was being honest. While Emet-Selch was the more powerful of the two, he tended not to get involved unless something motivated him to begin with. While he most definitely did not want the Ascian around here, without the world being sundered or the people here fragmented, he doubted the Architect would really be that much of a threat. At least, he hoped that much though. Zenos on the other hand, Zenos went on rampages for the hell of it. And for a world filled with heroes and villains, the madman would be right at home here, and would do as he pleased. Zenos would be dangerous.
So this is what I'm like when Zenos or Emet-Selch get involved.
No shit.
Alex resisted the urge to react to his own thoughts, lest he give Prompto the wrong impression. Thank you, Fray. He thought sarcastically.
Finally, Alex held up a hand. "You, Ignis, and Gladiolus weren't there. It was just Noctis. In my world about two years or so before I came here." That represented one issue with him; the only other person who could confirm it didn't remember. Yes, he knew it. He knew it beyond a shadow of a doubt. But getting others to believe it was the problem. "And Noctis didn't seem that concerned about it. Hell, I offered to go with him and hunt Ardyn down but he just ran off to do his own thing. So breathe. He'll turn up." Ardyn, so far as Alexander knew, was a major threat. And that put Ardyn on a list, well, an extremely short list here on this world. Ardyn had the dubious honor of being quite possibly one of the only people here that would get Alex to drop the adventurer act and show what he could actually do as a Warrior of Light. Though to be fair, thanks to Caius, Kuja had also been added to that list as well, fun.
"But you are right, we gotta go. Can you jump from rooftop to rooftop well enough or do you need me to pull you along?" He could do it. Prompto was a small guy, and he was used to hefting around much larger objects. Really, either was good with him. The reaction to getting Rescued was great. Although now that he thought about it, probably having someone screaming the entire time broadcasting where you are wasn't the best of ideas, now was it? But he'd hold him to that. Ardyn was someone worth keeping tabs on. He just really hoped Prompto at least trusted him in the meantime. Because the more he thought on it, the more crazy he probably sounded.
I'm gonna keep on keeping on the only way I know how
What Alex was saying didn’t make sense. His world? Two years ago? Even with everything Prompto had been through in the last few weeks (and he’d been through a lot), that was still too much. It sounded kind of like something out of a cartoon. Or like one of those really weird video games. Still, none of that mattered. Not right now. Not when Noctis was in danger and Ardyn could be around any corner.
What mattered was that they got moving.
”Woh! Hey! No more pulling!” Prompto took a step back, waving his hands back and forth over each other in a universal gesture of ’no way.’”I can jump. Jumping’s no problem. S’long as it’s not like. A really, really big gap.” Then he’d have to be pulled again. Nope, nope, nope. He didn’t think his stomach could take it.
”So we’re going out the city, right? There’s a real big wall though. Not sure how we’ll get through it. But then, you’ve got all kinds of crazy powers, don’t you? Was that magic? It was way cool.”
There he went blabbering again. He knew nobody wanted to hear it, but he couldn’t stop. He was a jumble of nerves, and those nerves were a force of pure energy which fueled his mouth like a steam train.
”Back where I’m from, only the kings of Lucis have magic. Like Noct, you know? Or, uh. Anyone he gives it to, I guess. Not me though. I’ve got guns. Big tech guy, me.” He gave a strained laugh and ruffled his hair, rubbing at the side of his head. ”Anyway, guess you’ve got a plan, right? I’ll follow along. I’m good at that.”
Why was he still talking?
”So uh. Lead the way!” He straightened in a kind of mock salute. ”My life. Is in your hands.”
Okay, a small chuckle escaped him at Prompto's insistence that he not do that again. "Suit yourself." Granted, it was for the best. Having him screaming the whole time really wouldn't help. "That's where Ragnabawk comes in. I can shield him from gunfire, but he needs to be there for me to shield him. I just don't want him getting shot on the way in." He took a moment to watch the sky. There was nothing there, which was good. "Take a look up, notice how they're not bringing anything in the air? We're not that much of a threat. And if they reported the hostage situation, they'll be clearing that building out first." This was why Alex didn't want to go in killing people. Aside from the moral issue of it, it helped at least temper the response. They'd play with kid gloves hopefully as long as he did the same.
Right, time to go. "Come on, then. With me." And that's when he's off, hopping across rooftops as he lands, rolls and rises with a practiced ease. It comes naturally to him, as if he's just born to it. Well, it's not. It's the result of bored days and nights doing this exact thing across other people's houses. It's the result of constant effort at that Twelve forsaken Leap of Faith game back at the Gold Saucer. It's the result of the grueling climb of the Kugane Tower. It's the result of the excruciating pain of the Moonfire Faire. Well, training in some agile jobs helped, yes, but mostly practice! Breathe. In, out. There's some shouting, but it becomes less and less. There's still a hunt going, if the occasional glance down reveals guards frantically searching, but they're out of the immediate heat. Perhaps they didn't expect the grappling? If he had to guess they probably swarmed the alley ways first, half expecting them to have jumped.
Keep Prompto with him. He'd just pick up the conversation from earlier! That uh, seemed like a good idea. "If it helps you any, where I'm from, you'd be considered a Machinist." He remarked. Guns, drills, flame throwers, turrets, robots, satellite lasers, that sort of thing. "You said only people like Noct have magic, though? Where I come from, someone having zero magical aptitude is very much an oddity." His mind drifted to the Coco brothers, their family of Thaumaturges, and the one little brother who couldn't perform any form of magic. Kid was so desperate that he went and got himself possessed by a daemon just so he could do it. He was glad that ended better than it could have.
But it just reminded him of one truth of this world. "In comparison, this world is... fragile. Nothing to really cushion it from a mage going all-out." Normally there was a lifestream to soak up any damage done to the land, that didn't exist here. Any aether Alex took from the world would take longer to be replenished, if it even would be. Moments like that, he was thankful he was a Red Mage, focusing mostly on using his own aether stores. There was another jump as he landed on the roof across. His shoes slid across the tiles for a moment as he fell into a roll before rising again. Maybe something about Prompto's world would cheer him up? "... So uh, the Regalia. Is that sort of thing common in your world?" He brushed himself off. He looked out, the wall was still a ways away, but if they kept moving... "I'd never driven anything that advanced in my world. I'm kind of bummed the one Cid made me didn't come here." He was bummed that he lost a lot of things.
... Maybe Prompto could help him remake the Kettle Nexus.
Prompto is not about stalkers. Been there. Done that.
I'm gonna keep on keeping on the only way I know how
There were only a few things that Prompto knew about Alex. He knew he had a chocobo, that he had some crazy magic, and that he liked to help strangers with guns on the street. Prompto also knew that he was a pro at jumping between rooftops. Or he did now.
”H-hey! Wait up!”
Prompto took a breath, readied himself, and charged towards the gap between buildings with his fits tightly clenched. For a weightless moment, he hurtled over empty space, then the ground hit and he stumbled to a stop, arms waving out at his sides. It wasn’t that he was bad at this. In fact, he thought he was pretty good. You couldn’t hang out with Noctis for so long and still have a real fear of heights. Still, he had to be careful. This was dangerous, and the dizzying fall below him wouldn’t let him forget it.
He was starting to wonder if Alex didn’t have a little royal blood in him after all. Or maybe where he was from didn’t have roads? All they did was jump between rooftops all day. Some people fell and died, but that was a sacrifice they had to make. For all the roof jumping.
Man, his mind all over the place, wasn’t it?
Alex was talking to him. Prompto didn’t have enough extra breath to say much back. Just a lot of 'oh's and 'hm's and all other kinds of noises that sounded like he was listening when he was really just trying not to splatter on the pavement. He heard something about mechanics and magic and how really magic was pretty common wherever Alex was from. Weird stuff, that, but it wasn’t something Prompto wanted to think about just yet.
Prompto winced as his shoulder hit the hard roof tile, and he rolled clumsily back to his feet. If Alex had felt the same, rolling like that, he didn’t show it.
”So uh…” Alex stood around like it was the most natural thing in the world. ”The Regalia. Is that sort of thing common in your world?”
Prompto’s mouth fell open and he stared at him in disbelief. ”You know our car?” Okay, this had definitely passed the line from “weird” to “creepy.” He remembered with a shudder how Ardyn had been that second time they’d met. It was outside of Lestallum over by the binoculars, and Ardyn had been waiting for them, ready to spout some creepy rhyme about Noctis on his knees. Then he’d offered them a ride.
’Oh, but Ignis always drives!’
Creepy. Way creepy. Prompto should’ve listened to those vibes.
”Okay, man, so I wasn’t gonna say it, but this is all a lot.” Prompto brushed himself off nervously. Snow scattered from his coat like dust. ”Like. You saying you know us. And you’ve met Noctis. Look, I saw Noctis like a week before I got here and…” And the last he’d seen of him was his back as he sprinted to an elevator to get ahead of them. Prompto had done his best to take out the daemons quickly -- to be reunited with Noctis again. He’d been too late. Damn it.
”I’m gonna trust you. Cause you saved me. But I don’t like when it sounds like someone’s been watching us. Kinda a sore spot, you know?” Maybe he didn’t. Didn’t matter. ”So maybe just lay off all that? I don’t know you, and you don’t know me. And you don’t know Noct. Not my Noct.” Prompto felt his stomach clench. ”There’s no way.”
If Alex was offended, he didn't show it. He just let Prompto speak his piece. Okay, an objection. He'd dealt with those before. A lot. Really it was par for the course when you were an adventurer. So, he did what he always did; try to see it from Prompto's point of view. Aaaaand it started making sense. He, well he didn't know much about Prompto himself, but with what had transpired in his world. Well, it was lopsided. Prompto knew Alex existed, and that was about it. Alex knew a lot more about the group as a whole. He could see how that'd be... bothersome. Right, yeah, he was pushing too much, he could see that. "Yeah, okay, fair. Sorry I made you feel uncomfortable. It sounds like I'm trudging up some bad memories." He concluded, crisis--well, if one even existed, averted. He gave a light shrug with a smile. "But if you do decide to stick around, could you please let me know if there's an issue sooner? I can't address it if I don't know about it and I'd rather resolve it than let it fester." Considering the whole 'wasn't gonna say it' bit, he had concerns.
Not his Noct, he puts it. Not his Noct. Those words hit a chord. Oh, not in the "oh I'll show you" manner. More on the nature of this world in itself. It hit him in that moment that despite his time here, he knew precious little about this world and its inhabitants. Or even how it worked. There was no lifestream, that was about it. "But, you've got a point, he probably isn't the one I know. Would explain why he doesn't remember me. I'd always thought it was something with this world like amnesia. I've met a couple others from my world in my time here; I'm a stranger to all of them." Amnesia had been his first thought. Well, duh. It was just like after Carteneau, he'd figured. Everyone had forgotten he had ever existed, but they remembered in the end. Give it time, they'll come around, they did last time, after all. Something to hold on to, at least.
Crossing his arms and rubbing his chin with the back of one finger, he continued for a moment. He spoke again, this time more softly, as if he was more speaking to himself than anything. "Maybe I was just never their... Mm." And he had to make peace with that, if such was the case. There was no cavalry coming. One couldn't remember what one had never experienced. There was nothing he could do but begin again, and Carteneau had given him plenty of experience in that regard. So at least there wasn't complete despair. That was a plus! Although wordlessly, he did take a moment to run a thumb over the palm of his hand, staring at it rather intently for a moment before pressing that thumb into his hand for a couple moments. It seemed as if he was using a surprising amount of force, but he stopped and he seemed satisfied.
Besides, if the voices were any indication, the guards were getting closer to their location. Though at this point it seemed to be less a pursuit and more a search. As long as they didn't do anything to alert them, then they'd be fine. He hoped. "Sorry, I'm rambling. We should keep moving." And with that, he started moving again, at least for a couple steps before he stopped. "Ah, if you get banged up, let me know. I can heal you." Probably uh, probably should've said that earlier.
I'm gonna keep on keeping on the only way I know how
Alex thought about that. He was quiet while he thought, and Prompto shifted uncomfortably. Had he said too much? He didn’t think he’d been that forceful, but then again, he’d kind of accused him of stalking them. Kind of. He didn’t know what he’d accused him of, but it hadn’t sounded good. Still, he just couldn’t focus when he heard talk like that. It didn’t sit right with him.
It had been the right thing to do. Probably. He hoped.
After a moment, Alex came to his conclusion and apologized. That was good. Prompto was about to tell him it was all cool, really, when Alex continued. ’Let him know when there’s an issue sooner?’ Prompto’s mouth opened and then closed.
”I...But...Huh?”
Sooner? Like how much sooner? It had only been a few minutes! He thought. And they’d spent most of that time running. Prompto had been a little too busy being pulled out windows and leaping over the heads of soldiers to stop for a chat. How was that ’letting it fester?’
Prompto didn’t have time to bring it up before Alex was thinking out loud. Noctis didn’t remember him. Right. Prompto hadn’t really thought about what he’d meant by ’his Noctis’ but he guessed it had meant something. Particularly for someone whose friends couldn’t remember him.
Ouch. That was rough.
”Hey, I don’t know about that.” Prompto leaned back on his heel, rubbing at his neck awkwardly. ”Maybe somebody remembers you! You’ve just gotta keep looking, right?”
Weird. All of it was real weird.
And awkward. There was some more silence after that. Prompto’d always hated silence.
When Alex finally spoke, it was all back to business. Prompto swallowed and nodded. ”Yeah. Let’s go.” They’d barely made it a few steps before Alex stopped again, dropping another bombshell that turned Prompto’s world upside down. ”You can, uh. Heal?”
Nope. Nope, nope. Not questioning it. This was all too much already.
”Er. Yeah sure, man. Doing good now though!” He laughed nervously and shot Alex a pair of finger guns. Smooth, Prompto.”So uh. Let’s keep going, yeah? We can talk after all the...dramatic escape stuff.”
Shhhh, don't bring that--actually do bring that up with Alex, Prompto. Wrongfoot him, it's always fun to do that one. He's thinking a mile a minute and maybe he could do with some calling out. Or not, well, that can be dealt with later. Fortunately it's not too much longer before they're staring at the wall. Right, getting out will be an issue. Well, not really, as Alex reaches into his jacket and pulls out a whistle. It's a quick sound, high pitched and shrill. A moment passes, and then another. It's quiet, and Alex crosses his arms. "So, the weather..." He looks up. "At least it's not raining, right?" He'll be here, he just takes his time. Probably. As long as the featherface didn't flock off somewhere.
But it's a bit more waiting, before finally the chocobo appears, fluttering over the top of the wall. He looks like he's struggling, and, well, Prompto had it right, the wings are stubby, but he's managing it. Alex has always been proud of the black plumage. That was not easy to get, after all. But the bird lands, making a soft chirping noise as it nuzzles Alex. "I know, I know. Got a package for you, big guy." At least before he looks back at Prompto. "This is Ragnabawk." Getting another kweh from the large black chicken. Really, he should've used a more majestic name, but too little, too late. Far, far too late.
But things did take one small turn, as Alex motioned for Prompto to get up on the chocobo. "Wait outside the city. If I'm not back by tomorrow or it looks like you're in danger, you're free to take off without me. Provo, the Rising Stones specifically." Yeah he was ditching him now that he was safe. Well, for a little, tiny bit. "I uh, I need to get my shit back." He'd left his stuff behind to get in, and well, some of that wasn't cheap or easy to replace. He doubted there'd be that much of a fuss, he hoped. He hadn't--Had they identified him? Oh, he hoped not. Then again, his description of "blonde guy in a jacket" was vague enough that maybe he could slip through, there was some hope, there. If not, then uh, well, he could probably figure something out.
Of course, the bird objected, giving Alex a swift peck, "Hey, hey! I didn't call you for nothing, I'll be back! Geez..." Ragnabawk was... aggressive. "If you can, make sure to feed him, he gets a bit pushy." As he backed off. "Right, so, uh, couple hours. See ya then." Smooth, Alex. Smooth. He'd at least save the whole Shadowbringer part for another time. Probably didn't want to do anything else just yet. So he just gave him an awkward peace sign and uh, ran off. Awesome.
