If she noticed that he didn’t understand much of what she said, she did not show it. It didn’t really matter. She found that her chest felt lighter after speaking on it. And where Zidane’s woman was blinded by her Gaian values, Cecil did not seem to push any such values on her. He simply heard and acknowledged. It was certainly strange and she watched his gesture as he touched his chest near his heart. She mimicked him and touched a hand to her own chest.
[break][break] So protecting these things was a reason to live? It felt too simple. She hesitated as she tried to process this information. It was not so different from her previous role, really. Only, it was for her own motives. Why did she feel so empty at that thought? Who knew freedom would be so overwhelming? She did not really respond to what Cecil said, only absorbed it.
[break][break] To think they were all born to help each other… She had simply assumed one helped one’s kind, while taking the resources of the others. The strong survived while the weak faded away. But, Cecil’s actions seemed to tell her otherwise. Did his creator simply make him to assist anyone? Or was this own choice? “...” Her eyes followed him as he stood up and extended a hand to her.
[break][break] She curiously stared at his hand. Quina had made a similar gesture and she had discovered a hand was expected in response. She took his hand with uncertainty as she stood up. “I can get down, however…” Her tail fell low as she eyed the edge of the roof. She had climbed up to get away from all of them. Her hands clasped behind her back. The wind blew hard, yet she seemed unbending under it.
[break][break] The city had been overwhelming and compacted with the reminders of her ruined home and accusations against it, she simply had wanted a quick escape. Her hands clasped behind her back. “Won’t they bother me?” She was not eager to be harassed by the people below. “If we stay long enough, then they will leave.”
Please, please talk about Terra. Cecil might be the only one who would understand
I will turn darkness into hallowed light
”I can get down. However…” It was then that Cecil noticed movement behind her. It was a strange feature -- unusual in nearly every way. It was long and winding and covered in fur, snaking down around her ankles.
Did this girl have a tail?
He tried to blink back his surprise. He had seen stranger things, had he not? He’d met dwarves, and were they not more unusual of feature? His mind drifted to Fusoya and the way he seemed to almost lose form on unconsciousness.
No, this meant nothing at all. He would pretend not to have noticed.
The girl clasped her hands behind her back. ”Won’t they bother me?” she asked. She sounded hollow and not particularly concerned, but she was reluctant. ”If we stay long enough then they will leave.”
Cecil shook his head. ”They will only worry more,” he said. He smiled gently. ”But we can stay until you’re ready.” He carefully tread down to the roof’s edge, peering over the side with his feet grounded for balance. It was a perilous fall.
”I have her unharmed!” he called down. ”There’s no need to worry!”
There were voices that failed to reach him over the wind. Cecil sighed and backed away from the fall. It would have to be good enough.
”I won’t leave you,” Cecil said as he returned. He wondered if he should sit again after they’d gone through the trouble of standing. It was no easy task in his armor, but he would follow her lead. ”But why don’t you tell me why you want to stay? The people down there won’t hurt you.”

@cecil She's going to need a big nap after all this.
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class, bulk] There was a flash of something on his face. Had he lost his footing? He did seem ill prepared for balance up on the roof in the equipment he wore. Was it surprising to him that she could get down? Had the wind blown a little too hard for him? She was unsure what seemed to catch him off guard, but he quickly recovered himself. [break][break] Instead, he gave in to her needs, instead of his own. To her, that action was baffling. Certainly, it was far more dangerous for him to be up here than her. She simply watched him as he seemed to be just as worried about the people below as he was with her. Did they really need to know their business? And she still could not fathom why they were worried for her, though she tried to keep Cecil’s recent words in mind. ‘We’re all born to help each other.’ Was that really true? It conflicted with what she was told she was born for, but she could now walk a different path. [break][break] She felt a little bit of exasperation at him saying he would stay. The people here liked to linger. Part of her simply wanted Kuja to swoop with the beautiful silver dragon. Then, she would just curl up for a nap on its back, safe between its wings. [break][break] It probably would not be difficult to escape the situation. If she was currently adept at anything, it was running away. But, would he give chase? He was not as dexterous or agile as her, and thus he could hurt himself. A small part of her did not wish that on him. It would be better to answer his questions. Her eyes drifted from him to back down at the tiles. Her reason was stated simply, not realizing how rude it sounded. “The people are exhausting.” How Zidane and Kuja handled this was beyond her. “I wanted a reprieve and seeing the heavens gives me peace.” Her gaze turned up to the sky. The stars now speckled the sky with their jewel-like shimmer. On Terra, she only saw projections and imitations. There was no true sky in the core of the planet. She remembered hoping that once the projections showed the assimilation completed, there would be repose to the souls of Terra as much as it would be for her brothers. [break][break] ‘Heaven grant the wandering souls eternal repose.’ [break][break] She shook her head, her soft blond locks scattering in the wind. Her teal turned up to peer at him again as he approached with his less reassured footing. “This is my first day in a living city.” Ah. It seemed she would keep talking. If he understood, would he let her go? [break][break] “My home, Terra, sought to save itself when it’s life crystal waned. The people were unable to find a newborn planet, and tried to assimilate to a less suitable one, Gaia, in an emergency.” She shook her head, once more. There was a far away gaze. She did not like recounting the tragedy. “It failed. To recover, the Terran people discarded their bodies and let their souls sleep, leaving themselves in the hands of my Master Garland.” It felt so odd to tell an outsider. “He fulfilled his purpose by disrupting the Gaian soul cycle and merging Terran souls into it.” A long, tedious, and delicate process that was. “As the time grew closer to success, he created my predecessors to expedite the process. In time, I was created to guide one home and replace them should they prove non-compliant to Garland.” Or stopped functioning. [break][break] Her eyes never left his. Was it more than he asked for? “I was left keeper of the village full of genome vessels who eagerly waited for a soul.” How badly she had wanted to give them life. “The arrival of both my predecessors proved catastrophic for Terra. It seemed one sided with the Gaians and the oldest…" She still did not know his reason. Maybe she never would. Even if she knew, would it fix the damage done? "My master fell and my ‘brother’ saved me from dying with Terra.” Zidane seemed stuck on this concept of 'little sister'. [break][break] She felt she had not enough breath in her lungs now. She took a deep breath through her nose. Even talking this much was wearing on her. “My predecessor gave me the ability to live beyond my design and yet…” She shook her head. “It is so exhausting. I do not understand this living planet’s expressions, customs, or motives. Nor my place within it.” To be freed from servitude, only to be set into a world unknown to her. It was a lot to take in and she simply wanted to go back to Headstone Forest to sleep with the spirits there. That felt far more familiar than this place. She felt the wetness shimmer in her eyes again, and fought them this time. Why waste her own water? She found holding her breath helped a little.
-cackling- YES. Talk about your parallels. One of my favorite topics ever.
I will turn darkness into hallowed light
”The people are exhausting,” the girl said honestly. ”I wanted a reprieve and seeing the heavens gives me peace.”
Cecil looked up to the sky. The heavens gave her peace? It was not yet night. The stars were not yet visible nor was the strange, single moon, but he thought he understood. Had he not spent night after endless night entranced by that unfathomable space? He hadn’t known it at the time -- his lineage, his birth place, his blood -- but he had always felt a strange draw beyond the world on which he stood.
He hadn’t had the time to ponder it after learning his place in it. The red moon had been foreign to him and now it was gone.
”I understand,” he said. He too found solace in the quiet and lonely parts of the night.
She did not sit again, but Cecil found his balance and managed well enough. He listened. It seemed she had something to say.
And Cecil had something to hear.
His heart twisted at her tale so strangely like his own. He did not understand all of the words (Gaia? Terra? Assimilate?) but there was no denying the pieces. It was exactly as Fusoya had explained.
An old, dying planet seeking the lifeblood of another. Its people choosing a sleep like death, their souls waiting for their time to awaken. An impatient caretaker sending emissaries of his destruction to the living planet’s surface.
He listened, and he thought.
His brow furrowed. He felt his eyes turn troubled. What did this mean? He did not have the means to comprehend it.
Fusoya. Golbez. Would they know the answers? For not the first time, Cecil felt small in their footsteps.
”I understand,” he said again then looked out to the horizon. The ships drifted in their harbor. The water shimmered with the deep rose-violet of the coming twilight. This was not his world, but what right did he have to the world of his birth? Enough to protect. Enough to care for. That was all.
”I too was born of a dying planet,” he said. He touched his chest, lowering his head as he closed his eyes in thought. ”Your words ring true to me. My people have slept for some time, awaiting their awakening in the end of their sister world. There was one who sought destruction. And my brother…”
He felt chilled. His brother had ended lives, devastated nations, and brought harm to those he cared for. He had also turned to face Zemus once the dark mage’s spell had been broken.
“He spared me his burden,” Cecil said and was surprised by the truth of his words. ”I have seen a sleeping planet. I can imagine what it would mean to live in its silence. I understand.”
Cecil paused and then smiled. There was no use telling his story -- not unless she asked to hear it. ”What can I do to help?”
Teal eyes widened and lips slightly parted, a little surprised at his words. He understood not once, but thrice. The shift in her felt odd. That cold nervous emptiness seemed to give way to a warmer curiosity. She pressed her balled hands into her chest as he spoke, her eyes burrowing deeply into him. Her eyes followed his gaze out to the darkening horizon and sea.
[break][break] Another dying planet. He was not of Terra, that much she was sure. His soul did not form a tangible bond to her own. But there was still a familiarity in his tone and mannerisms. For a long moment, there was only silence. The wind felt nice and goosebumps pricked her skin from the chill. There was something renewing in it.
[break][break] His brother spared him the burden. Is that what Kuja and Zidane did for her?
[break][break] She paused in that thought. Had Terra and its duties been a burden? She had not thought so before. But, if she went back to it now after meeting and seeing people on a living planet...would it feel so? Her eyes lowered back to the unevenly, structured roof. It would never be like high-rise plumes she was so used to climbing.
[break][break] And now he asked her how he could help. She was not really sure. The silence extended. Then.
[break][break] “What became of your planet? ...And your brother?” What did Cecil think of his brother? She mulled over his admission of being born of the dying planet and yet only seeing it. So, was his life similar to that of Zidane’s? Would understanding Cecil help her understand his perspective.
[break][break] His discomfort did not leave her notice, but she did not understand why he endured it. “Sit.” She simply stated. Did he need her permission, like Garnet seemed to? But that did not seem to satisfy Garnet when she did. “Or is there another place?” Like down on the ground. Was his poor balance why he was so eager to touch the ground again? No. He had come for her, because he thought her balance poorly too because of the ‘concerned’ people below.
”What became of your planet? ...And your brother?”
Something had shifted between them. He had her interested in a way that he hadn’t before, and he saw something else. It was a look that he had felt in his own eyes as he gazed upon the stars -- upon the moons -- in a kind of a slow wonder. It was the feeling of knowledge, of secrets, or answers that one didn’t quite understand. He thought that they had that in common.
This girl knew the ways of a dying world. He pitied her as he pitied himself.
Cecil shook his head. ”It sleeps still,” he answered. He let her second question slip into silence. ‘And your brother?’ He didn’t know. In fact, he didn’t know the first either. Had Zeromus torn the world asunder? His hand itched towards his sword. Again, he felt the fear of that looming, dark force as it towered over him and made him feel small.
’Brother!’
”Sit.” The girl was commanding him now. Had she seen the fear in his eyes? ”Or is there another place?”
Cecil slowed his heart. He was needed here and now. He couldn’t let the visions of that day overtake him.
”The height’s a little overwhelming,” he said with an apologetic smile. It was both truth and something like a lie. He wanted them to return to stable ground. ”We could speak elsewhere. I’d like to hear your story.”
And she wanted to tell it. He knew because he felt a strange call to tell his own.
Cecil was careful to keep himself balanced as he took slow, shuffling steps towards the edge of the roof. In normal circumstances, he thought that such care wouldn’t be necessary, but his armor was not made for agility in mind. It weighed him down and hindered his movements as he crept towards where he thought the window had been, arms hovering to either side like a tightrope walker. He reached the end, crouched carefully down, and took the edge in his hands.
This part, he could do well enough.
He had the strength to support himself with his upper body as he shifted slowly down, twisting around until he hung from the roof as though by a pull-up bar. He tried to ignore the sense of vertigo in his throat as he searched for the open window, and there it was, maybe half a foot to his right. He sidled over, one hand over the other, until he made it.
Would he die if he fell from this height? He tried not to consider the possibility.
Cecil swung his legs back then swung them forward, repeating the motion until he was certain of his own moment, and then he released. As expected, he vaulted through the window and landed solidly on the second floor landing. His armor clinked on landing, and he took that as a sign of safety. He let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.
Kain would have laughed at him.
With that done, Cecil leaned out the window and held his arms open. ”I’ll help you!” he called. ”I can pull you inside!”

[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class, bulk] His mood shifted and he seemed to not be fully there for a few moments. He looked to the sky. Could he even see something beyond that darkness that lies between the stars? Home, maybe? Was it also a place to which one offered themselves? And it seemed clear that whatever happened to it, it may still very well be in its deep sleep. There was still hope for it, unlike Terra. [break][break] He eagerly took to her suggestion of leaving this place. She suddenly felt conflicted again. It meant she had to go down near all those...others. Her face was still messy with tears, though her eyes weren’t red and puffy. She scrubbed at her face with closed palms as he tip-toed his way to the ledge. Though Mikoto thought she told him all. He wanted more details? She thought back to the chief of the Black Mages. He had pushed her to tell too. It had led to insights on their creator...her predecessor. [break][break] She simply watched - with blank, half opened eyes and resting genome face - his terrible display of agility which he compensated for with strength. Perhaps no one ever taught him to climb. It was less about strength and more about keeping close to the wall and using your legs for support. She padded gently to the ledge, taking her bag in hand. She leaned down to look past him. The people had at least thinned out. Had they finally gotten bored? Or had they heard him? Some still had their eyes burrowing up here and she found herself hesitating to come down again. [break][break] Cecil called to her from the safety of the window. The draw was enough to finally get her started over the ledge. She put an arm through the loop in her bag and slung it over her shoulder as before. Instead of flipping as he did, she simply inched backwards off the ledge. Letting her toes find a better hold in the very small ledges of the brick. Once they were sturdy and the furthest she could get them, she lowered one hand to help her fingertips wedge into another brick edge. [break][break] Then slowly she made her way to the window. She had thought little of the consequences as she trusted her own abilities. Nor did she think about the indecency of coming down in a dress. She simply focused on the task. Her tail abnormally wrapped around the edge of the window frame for support as she placed her feet on the bottom pane and met his open arms to be pulled inside. [break][break] Her eyes scoured the room for a moment. She partially expected to be met by more people. But it seemed empty except for those two. She turned to look expectantly at him. “Where?” Where did he want to go? Would they stay here in the room? [break][break] “By the water, they were firing at the sky.” She wanted to see why. The raining sparks had been pretty see, but its meaning was beyond her. And perhaps it was a suggestion of a new place to chat.
Okay but Cecil might be the most pure-hearted being in existence
I will turn darkness into hallowed light
Cecil struggled not to call out to her as she eased her way down the side of the building. He struggled because he knew that no urges for caution would accomplish more than a simple, silent focus. For her part, she seemed to not share his anxiety at the precarious height. As she sidled close to the wall, she seemed as at ease as though she had merely been walking down the street. Knowing her, perhaps more so.
He grasped her as soon as she was in range, hefting her easily inside. Once her feet had touched solid ground, he let his muffled concern melt into relief. ”You must not have needed my help after all,” he said though it didn’t make him feel foolish. He’d had no way of knowing that she was as natural around heights as a dragoon. He would have done the same all over again.
She turned to look at him. ”Where?” she asked in that simple way of hers. He thought over her suggestion. ’Firing into the sky?’
His immediate instincts told him to keep her far away. They spoke of battles and airships and cannon fire. Still, those were instincts best stashed away. This kingdom was, as best to his knowledge, not at war.
”Why don’t we see?” he said instead. Her curiosity was obvious, and he had to admit that his own was piqued as well. It was something to do. For both of them.
He led the way down the stairs then back out onto the street. There were only a few onlookers now, and they nodded at him as he approached, calling him a hero and saying that they were relieved that it was over and done with. A few scolded Mikoto for putting herself in danger. Cecil shook his head. ”She was never really in danger. Were you, Mikoto?” He gave her a knowing smile.
He wondered how many people had doubted her abilities in her life. He would no longer be one of them.
They continued on, and Cecil kept his eyes on the path and the routes that he didn’t particularly know. This city was complex and expansive -- far greater than any known to his own blue world. It was intimidating, and for not the first time, Cecil felt small. He would never let it show, however. Not in front of his new companion.
”Have you seen ships before?” Cecil asked if only to keep her mind away from the crowds and the noise. ”This must be overwhelming.”
He thought about what she had told him. He thought of a Lunarian child raised in that quiet, desolate place bathed in moonlight. He thought of all the friends they would never meet and all of the friendships they would never know. Was that the world into which his father had been born? He would never know the answer.
It was not a far walk from the harbor nor was it a difficult place to find. The smell of the sea hung thick and heavy here. It smelled of salt and mud and high winds. Cargo ships were moored at the docks, towering over the sailors attending to them. They creaked as they swayed with the pulsing waves.
”How about here?” Cecil gestured towards a bench overlooking the water. She’d seemed curious, and perhaps a little scared. He hoped that he could encourage her should he stay by her side.
”You seemed curious. About my story,” Cecil said as he sat. He placed his hands on his knees and his gleaming white armor. ”Maybe I could help you understand.”

Big Thinks @cecil
[attr=class,paccent]
[attr=class, bulk] There was an aura of relief that melted his stiff muscles. Had she really worried him enough for him to go beyond his comfort zone? No other had really been worried about her well being before, other than Zidane. Or maybe Kuja, in passing at the Headstone Forest. And even then, she was baffled by his logic. Or his lack of thought on the matter, when he couldn’t answer her questions. [break][break] Her gazed simply buried into him as he stated she didn’t need his help. But something seemed inaccurate about that statement. She shook her head slowly, and softly. Her eyes dropped again. “I do need your help.” Would she have met him otherwise? She would have missed out on his insight. [break][break] It seemed her suggestion gave him pause. Did she say something bothersome? Though, in another heartbeat, he agreed to show her why they fired in the sky. Her tail curled contentedly behind her as she turned to follow him. Though, she wondered why these Zephonian’s dealt with stairs. Did they not have platforms that shifted at one’s control? She missed such conveniences. They were in a distant past now. She supposed they preferred to tire themselves out before they got to their destinations. [break][break] As they exited the building, she noticed the few people staring at them. Her teeth grit, her muscles stiffen, and her tail fluff. Despite this reaction, she found herself edging behind the paladin to keep out of their path. As they proceeded to scold her, she turned her back to them to not even look at them. Why were they so mad? It was not like she did anything to bother them or earn their hostility. Even though Cecil put himself in the most harms way, he still defended her. She gave him a side glance and an almost pout with a tinge of blood circulation on her face. [break][break] As they finally continued on their way, she was a little more hyper vigilante after being fussed at. Would there be another who approached? She found herself eying the shadows cautiously. Then, his question came. She paused from edging around a corner to look back up at him. Had it been so obvious this city was a bit much for her? “I’ve seen airships and battleships.” Both of Gaian and Terran quality. “Are the vessels on the water called ships too?” [break][break] The sky was darkening rapidly now. The dark water extended into infinity. It’s shape only noticeable by the soft lights from the nearby building and boats. Could Mikoto simply enter the water and find the oblivion peaceful? Just like the space and endlessly possibilities that lie between the stars? But her pondering was broken as she found herself led to a bench. She took a seat, her legs swaying softly as she did so. It seemed she was smaller than the average person here. [break][break] On the other end of the shore, she could see people gathering. Crowds filled with soft sounds filling the air in almost calculated beauty. It was hard to tell what was going on over there, but she was more than happy to stay far away for the moment. [break][break] She looked up at Cecil, the moonlight making him even more beautiful as it sparkled on his armor and hair. “Yes.” She did want him to help her understand. “Please tell me.” She folded her hands in her lap and looked down at the ground. [break][break] She was born to understand her predecessors, wasn’t she? To aid them, then replace them if they no longer functioned. But she could do neither if she didn’t get to know them. She had so many questions, but first, she wanted to hear his story. She opened her mouth to ask all of them at once, but she shook her head and closed her mouth again. “You said you were born of a dying planet, but that you have only seen it. That means you did not live there.” Perhaps it was just a gentle push for him to start at the beginning.
The girl hopped onto the bench, her legs milling below her slightly above the ground. He saw her tail snake beneath her into a hook on the bench’s underside. He still found it strange and almost disarming, but he wouldn’t mention it if she didn’t have the need. Maybe those of her planet were differently built than was usual, and Cecil couldn’t say that Lunarians weren’t strange themselves.
Her eyes had drifted to him. Did she have her own questions about his colorless complexion? His fair hair? The cool blue of his eyes? His own oddities were not above attention.
”Yes,” she said after a long moment. ”Please tell me.” She looked at her hands, folded neatly in her lap. She seemed sheepish in a way though her expression was seemingly unchanged. Cecil wondered if he would learn to read those expressions by the time their conversation had come to an end.
He smiled. He didn’t mind speaking of it -- at least he thought. Not if it might help her find some understanding in this strange and isolating world.
”It’s not fair to say that I was born of it,” Cecil said. ”My father was of an ancient race, but he died when I was still unborn. I had only a brother left. He…” The words trailed into a muddy place, hesitant and uncertain. ”He was influenced by the keeper of that other world. He let hate guide him and left me in the wilds. I was found by the king of Baron and raised as a knight.”
He didn’t know if that story was enough. He found that he didn’t wish to tell it again.
”In time, the keeper of that planet found a hold on my brother. He led him to conquer the other kingdoms, leading them to ruin. I fought against him, unknowing of the truth. In time, my friends and I came to that place. The moon.” He could still hear Fusoya’s voice, grated with age. He had not wanted to hear the truths he told. He had disbelieved at first, and yet, he found that it wouldn’t last. He had known in his own way. A part of him had already known.
”We fought to stop my brother. To stop Zemus.” He found his eyes losing focus. They had fought, and yet Zeromus’ darkness had overwhelmed them. Even now, he had visions -- so bright and clear! -- of that sterile place, collapsed and gasping and reaching towards the brother he’d never known. At the last moment, the moment which would spell death, he had succumbed to unconsciousness and awoken here.
Zemus. What had he done?
Cecil shook his head. Those thoughts were not for her to hear, and he would do what he could to guide her. ”It’s not your story, I know,” he said. He smiled at her weakly. ”Do you think that it was callous towards the other planet? To deprive it of its chance at life?” Cecil looked up to the sky. If she was of such a silent place, would she have opposed him? She must have. ”Maybe one day they will have their time to awaken.”
