[attr="class","vvoverlap"]Too much hope is the opposite of despair.
[attr="class","vvbody"]“It’s not too bad,” Vincent said in response to Celes’ comment about how Toresnten must be strange for him. “I never really bothered to understand all the technology and modernity of Midgar so Sonora was a little confusing, to be honest. Torensten is simpler.” Technology, unsurprisingly, had increased quite a bit during his long sleep in Shinra mansion. He’d always felt a bit like a doddering old man when he tried to figure out stuff like cell phones. Yuffie had never failed to point out his inadequacies in that department. [break][break] Vincent wasn’t surprised to learn that Celes wasn’t from Zephon either. Most of the more interesting people he’d met came from other lands, after all. As she spoke, Vincent tried to force himself to relax a little bit. He was sitting too stiffly, too much like this was a formal business meeting. Old habits died hard he supposed as he leaned back in his chair and sipped the cold tea. He huffed again in almost-laughter at her wry smile and comment about Zephon doing strange things to your head. “I’ve definitely noticed.”[break][break] “I don’t think I miss my homeworld either,” he admitted with a slight frown. It felt almost cruel to say it aloud, to imply that he didn’t yearn to return to his friends and life there. But Gaia held too much darkness and emotional baggage, the bits he could remember made him unwilling to return to that life. He was perfectly fine starting a new life here and remaking himself yet again. Besides, if the rumors were to be believed at least some of the old crew from Gaia were here. He just hadn’t seen them yet. [break][break] “Not at all,” he said in response to her sheepish question. No, it hadn’t been too much. He was starting to get a better feel for her as a person. And he was starting to feel a little more comfortable, a little less rigid. “I get it. A lot of people I’ve met had stronger ties to their homeworlds and people they wanted to get back to. But I’m really not concerned about it either. Sometimes a new start is good even if it didn’t happen the way you expected.” [break][break] Vincent had spent years trying to hide from a past he’d rather forget. He’d made peace with it finally, after years of denial and heartbreak. But the lingering sense of dread and loss had still hung over him. Here in Zephon it had lessened and nearly disappeared. Maybe it was because he didn’t remember everything, and when he thought too hard about Lucrecia or Hojo his mind stabbed with pain and forced his thoughts elsewhere. Or maybe it was just because he had a chance to live a new life here, away from the shadows of his past. [break][break] “Are all the Dragonblades like us? From other worlds?”

Talking about work. Celes can do that.
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
”I don’t think I miss my homeworld either.”
Celes blinked at him, shocked. Nearly everyone she’d spoken to had been one one singular mission -- to return home. Some of them had urgent business to complete. Others had lost friends, and still more were merely homesick. Only she and Caius had taken to this new world completely and whole-heartedly, and she’d come to accept that whenever she spoke her true feelings, she would be met with a mixture of confusion and scorn.
Not with Vincent, however. It seemed he had his own demons waiting for him.
”Right,” Celes said. ”There wasn’t much waiting for me. Or, well, I suppose it still is.” She gave something between a groan and a sigh. ”But I don’t really care about it. It feels like a long time ago now. And I have a life here.”
More of a life than she’d ever had before. In Vector, her life had never really been her own. Afterwards, she’d been quickly robbed of any decent life at all. She’d been ready to throw herself at a mad god just so she’d die fighting. It was sad now that she really thought about it.
”They’re not all like us,” Celes said. ”Actually, most of them aren’t. We run a mercenary group, and that attracts all kinds. Especially around here. We have a reputation for taking impossible jobs. Any man with a sword and something to prove wants to align themselves with us.”
Which might explain the glut of idiot men trying to challenge her for dominance. Well, it was best they learned some modesty anyway.
”But there are enough like us to get that reputation in the first place. There’s me, Caius, and Yuna primarily. She’s a white mage. Then there’s my friend Sabin and a bunch of people who work with us but don’t stay here. I don’t even know how many. Caius is the one always inviting people back.” She smiled wryly. That was Caius -- always going on missions. Always encountering all kinds of strange characters that he would, without fail, ask to join them. It was a little annoying, but honestly Celes was mostly impressed. She could never have done something like that. She was too…
Awkward? That felt like the right word.
”I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but people like us tend to be stronger than anyone here. That’s why we want to let people know we exist. We can help them when no one else can.”
[attr="class","vvoverlap"]Too much hope is the opposite of despair.
[attr="class","vvbody"]Celes looked surprised when Vincent calmly stated he didn’t miss his homeworld. He supposed it was odd, wasn’t it? Especially for someone like him who had mostly come to peace with the demons in his past. But Zephon offered so much more possibility and he was intrigued to see where it went. Especially now that he was joining the Dragonblades. What the woman said made sense to him too, about not caring what was waiting for her back home. It didn’t matter as much, not as compared with the new life they had in Zephon. Anyway, what use was there bemoaning a life they were unlikely to ever return to?[break][break] “Ah. That makes sense, given the… demonstration in the training yard,” he said with an amused edge to his voice. The man challenging her out there when he’d arrived certainly hadn’t seemed like anything special, just an idiot with too much to prove. He wondered vaguely how many similar arrogant and idiotic men she’d put in there place. [break][break] The name Yuna didn’t ring any bells for Vincent, but he filed it away alongside the knowledge that she was a white mage. Though the terms white and black mage meant nothing to someone from Gaia where materia of all types could be swapped at will, he’d since learned that other worlds specialized their magical powers much more. Yuna the white mage would specialize in healing, he surmised. [break][break] “Yeah, I’ve definitely noticed. Zephon natives seem…” He struggled for a word. It seemed discourteous to say helpless or weak. “Less trained and less magically adept,” he amended. [break][break] He set his now empty glass on the desk. It only had a few tiny pieces of ice remaining, the scorching heat had made quick work of them. “Should I report to headquarters to find job listings at first? And are rewards split amongst the guild members?” Back to business now. He liked Celes just fine, but Vincent wanted to make sure he had all the pertinent details. Idle chatter couldn’t get in the way of him being confident of what to do next. “I hope to find a permanent residence here soon, so hopefully the townspeople will soon learn that I am available for their jobs too.”

[attr="class","vvinfo"]The awkward will be coming to an end soon I think! / Celes Chere

Almost done, I think?
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Vincent had noticed. It was funny just how different Celes was to most of the locals. There was a sharp gap between her skills and most people back home, of course, but she knew all kinds who had rivaled her even without military training. An inventor king. A gambling airship captain. A little girl though she supposed that had mainly been due to magicite. Magicite had done a lot to boost the power of everyday people. It was sad, really. She wondered what the espers must have thought from within their rocky tombs.
Or within her blood.
Vincent lowered his glass. He’d finished tea -- as poor as it had been -- and Celes quickly sipped her own to catch up. The tea was still cold, but it was quickly warming in the tropical heat. Celes wasn’t made for this kind of weather. Not with her magic.
”Should I report to headquarters to find job listings at first?” Vincent asked. ”And are rewards split amongst guild members?”
Celes could have sighed in relief. Work talk. She could do that.
”If you want,” she said. ”But that’s kind of the point. A lot of people find mercenary work around here. I guess if you drop a bunch of fighters in a strange world with nothing else to do, we’re going to...well. Fight.” She smirked dryly. ”So Caius and I decided to make a place where people would know to look for us. It makes things easier.”
Celes took a too large gulp of her tea and nearly spat it out, struggling to keep it in her throat as she swallowed. Her throat ached once she was done, and she put it down as well. That was enough of that.
”We’ll usually be swamped with jobs though I can’t promise that it’ll all be exciting. We get some that I’d only trust with Outlanders -- er, that’s people like you and me -- but there aren’t too many like that on a good day. I’ll let you know.”
She looked at him. ”We don’t split reward money. This is just a place to get jobs, and we don’t all do it equally. We’ll take ten percent of what you earn to keep this place running, but…” She gestured around. ”I don’t know. I think it’s worth it.
”If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, I could give you a few tips. I’ve got an apartment not far from here. Caius lives outside the city. He doesn’t have much choice with that dragon of his.”
A dragon that she had never particularly approved of. She still didn’t, she supposed, though even she had to admit that it had turned out to be useful. And Caius adored the thing. Whatever made him happy.
”Let me know when you’re available. I have a few jobs piling up that I don’t trust anyone with. It sounds like you might need to rest for a minute before you head out again.”
[attr="class","vvoverlap"]Too much hope is the opposite of despair.
[attr="class","vvbody"]Vincent listened intently as their conversation switched back to mercenary talk. He noticed that Celes seemed much more comfortable and in her element when she talked about the guild. The stiffness of earlier seemed to evaporate as she discussed the types of jobs and how the reward money was split. Talking about more personal matters had seemed hard for her, but Vincent completely understood. He certainly preferred to discuss business and keep everyone at an arm’s length away as well. [break][break] He nodded along with her words, taking stock of how the guild worked. He’d never really worked in an established mercenary organization before. Vincent had always been the traveling mercenary, so this would be new for him. [break][break] “It does sound worth it,” he agreed regarding the guild taking ten percent of earnings for operating costs. Vincent was not really concerned about the monetary rewards anyway. Not so long as he made enough to live. “Tips for housing would be appreciated. An apartment nearby would be beneficial. I’ve been staying at inns and hotels since arriving in Zephon, but having an actual place of my own would be preferable.” Especially at this point when he thought he’d established something of a home base in Torensten. [break][break] He was slightly intrigued to hear of Caius’ dragon. He certainly hadn’t had such a beast with him in Sonora, but then it wouldn’t have exactly fit on the twisting metal streets there. He made a mental note to try to meet the creature sometime. [break][break] “Yes, I’ll take a couple of days to get acclimated,” he said in agreement. “Just to find somewhere to stay and learn the layout of the city and surrounding land. Should I just return here once I’m settled?” [break][break] He stood as their conversation reached its natural end. He wasn’t the type to linger and share any more words than necessary. So he grabbed his tattered cloak from the wall and steeled himself to walk back into the oppressive heat and sun “I probably also need some new clothes before starting any jobs,” he added with a glimmer of amusement in his voice. Layered black leather and thick cloth was not the proper wardrobe for the tropical climate of Torensten.

[attr="class","vvinfo"]No drama here! Just awkward. / Celes Chere
Use your own eyes, and see for yourself which side I'm on.
Vincent would join. It wasn’t unexpected, but it was nice to hear anyway. She’d never had a single person turn down their terms, and why would they? Their guild wasn’t out to make money. If it was, Celes could have afforded a better apartment. Instead, it existed only to benefit everyone who came. Caius would have it no other way.
”Sure,” Celes said. She stood. ”My place isn’t anything much, but you don’t seem like the kind of guy who’d want that anyway. There are some cheap apartments nearby. I’ll show you which ones are…” She hesitated. ”Well. The ones that don’t mind people like us.”
She smiled wryly. It was ironic that so many people would give her a terrible side eye when she was the one saving them half the time. It was terrible all around, really, and she knew it bothered most people more than it bothered her. She was used to that kind of look. Being a conquering general didn’t tend to win her any popularity contests.
”I’ll see you soon then,” Celes nodded at him. ”Whenever you’re ready. There’s always someone here. Me, Caius, then I have a few other men I trust to hold down the fort when we’re both away. There’s also Yuna, but she’s usually in Provo anymore. I’m sure you’ll meet her.”
She tried to imagine the two of them talking. Friendly, pure-hearted Yuna with this too-serious man who seemed like he would have been aloof if he’d cared enough to try. He wasn’t trying to prove anything, Celes would give him that. In that outfit, she’d somehow expected him to be a try-hard.
He said that he wanted some new clothes for the weather. Celes laughed. ”I think that’s a good idea.” She was already sweating again. The tropical heat wasn’t always this terrible, but it was today and she could only imagine what it must have been like for him in full leather clothing and that cape he’d come in with. ”There are some shopping plazas on the east side of town. I’m sure you can find someone to go with you if you want.”
Not her. That sounded awful.
”Well. Good luck.” She felt suddenly awkward again. She wasn’t great at saying goodbye. Or much anything else, really. ”It was nice to meet you.” Was it? Well, she figured they’d have a better conversation next time at least. ”I guess I'll see you around. Vincent.”
